Representation of Religiously Marked Allusion as a Literary Concept in the English Literary Text

The article examines the literary concept, its characteristics and the embodiment of the peculiar features of literary concepts in religiously marked allusions in the literary text. In particular, the author clarifies the theoretical foundations of the literary concept, which is of huge importance in cognitive linguistics, text linguistics and literary studies and is at target of many scientific researches. The aim of the research is to justify that literary concept as a complex mental unit embraces a set of specificities all of which are transmitted to the semantic construct of religiously marked allusion - the verbal explication of literary concept in the literary text. The topicality and novelty of the research lies in the fact that the author scrutinizes the notion of concept from the perspectives of cognitive and literary approaches, generalizing all of the peculiarities of literary concept based on the review of the prior linguistic investigations. In addition, the author studies religiously marked allusions as the linguistic units that externalize literary concepts in the literary text, and assures that these linguistic units manifest all of the features inherent in the literary concept. To reach the research aim, the representation of literary concepts via religiously marked allusions is investigated on the basis of the analysis of a literary text. In the process of analysis, the researcher widely uses the method of conceptual analysis. According to the results of the analysis, religiously marked allusions representing literary concepts explicate the author’s individual conceptual world picture and his/her modality in the literary text.

Empathy and Semiotic Narrative Practices concerning Art: A Cognitive Semiotic Approach to Aesthetic Experience and Emotion

This paper proposes a cognitive-semiotic approach to aesthetics to understand aesthetic emotion and its relation to the process of producing and valorizing art. The core argument presented is that the emotional aspects of aesthetic experience are integral to the processes of evaluation and meaning-making and that this interplay significantly influences individuals’ engagement with art, highlighting the importance of these dimensions in the overall experience. Therefore, the initial step in my approach is to illustrate that the process of meaning-making is significantly influenced by our active participation, as well as our interpretation and understanding of our own emotions and those of others. I intend to demonstrate that throughout this process, empathy is a vital component of the reciprocal interaction between the viewer and the artwork. In this regard, I will explore various concepts related to empathy, focusing on aesthetic empathy. Additionally, I will emphasize the correlation between aesthetic experiences and everyday life, explaining how a work of art can effectively mirror the core of daily life through a semiotic narrative practice. I believe that by exploring these narratives more thoroughly, we can achieve a deeper, empathetic understanding of both the artist and the artwork and that this understanding can lead to explicit and implicit responses to the artwork, ultimately shaping our overall attitude toward it. Hence, I will conclude that our aesthetic experiences provide us with opportunities to actively explore aspects of our narrative selves, which might help us understand how these experiences significantly change our relationship with ourselves and the social context we are a part of.

Cognitive interviewing for assessing the content validity of older-person specific outcome measures for quality assessment and economic evaluation: a scoping review.

Older people (aged ≥ 65years) are significant users of health and social care systems. However, many outcome measures for quality assessment and economic evaluation lack content validation for this population. Cognitive interviews are a key approach for generating content validity evidence. This systematic scoping review aimed to synthesise evidence on cognitive interviewing practices with older adults, including those with cognitive impairment and dementia, to determine the content validity of outcome measures used with these populations in health and social care settings. A search was conducted across five databases, and results were uploaded to Covidence review management software. Two researchers performed screening and data extraction using a custom template. The initial search identified 8814 articles. After removing duplicates and conducting title and abstract screening, 105 articles remained. Full-text screening excluded 86 references, resulting in 19 included articles. Studies utilised various cognitive interviewing approaches, predominantly concurrent think-aloud combined with verbal probing. Inductive analysis based on Tourangeau's four-stage response model was commonly used for analysing verbal protocol data. Only one in four included studies indicated any allowances to alleviate cognitive burden for older participants. There was limited involvement of older people with cognitive impairment and dementia, but studies including these populations reported several modifications enhancing meaningful inclusion.

THE NOTION OF SIZE FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL, COGNITIVE, AND LINGUISTIC POINTS OF VIEW

The author summarizes various aspects of size in languages with different structures, highlighting the understanding of size by psychologists and linguists. A cognitive approach to the notion of size shows its connection with information processing channels, namely the channel of vision. The variety of ways of naming the size depends on the type of medicinal plant (herbaceous or shrub) and the layer of the vocabulary – literary vs. common. The results of the research can be useful for lexicologists, specialists in cognitive linguistics, and culture studies.

Believing in Mr. W.H.: Spontaneous and Intermental thought in "The Portrait of Mr. W.H."

abstract: Oscar Wilde's "The Portrait of Mr. W.H." is concerned with the question of what it means to believe. Certain aspects and characteristics of belief as depicted in this story rely on a cognitive approach to identify its phenomenological qualities and how it operates. Wilde depicts belief as belonging to a unique kind of creative thought that is non-conscious, irrational, and collective. While cognition is typically understood as controlled, purposeful, goal-directed, independent and private, this discussion introduces two cognitive categories, spontaneous thought and intermental thought, to conceptualize aspects of cognition that are outside conscious control, opaque or inaccessible, aimless, communal, and reliant upon others. These categories reveal the ways that Wilde puts pressure on conventional definitions of, and assumptions about, belief and art in "The Portrait of Mr. W.H."

Metaphorical conceptualization of AI in digital discourse

This study investigates the conceptual metaphors employed to characterize Artificial Intelligence (AI) within online public discourse. By using a cognitive semantic approach, this investigation aims to uncover how metaphors shape social perceptions of AI, revealing the cognitive mechanisms involved in making sense of this rapidly evolving technology. An adapted version of the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) has been combined with semantic frames to analyze the metaphorical mappings between the source and target frames, offering a more precise examination of the metaphors' conceptual structure. The analysis reveals a spectrum of metaphors portraying AI both as a beneficial partner and a potential threat, reflecting diverse attitudes and concerns about its integration into society. By focusing on the frame level, this study provides a fine-grained understanding of how different aspects of AI are construed through familiar conceptual frames. The findings contribute to the field of Cognitive Semantics and offer valuable insights for AI developers, educators, and communicators, emphasizing the importance of metaphors in framing society’s understanding of emerging technologies.

Cognitive Function Tests: Application of MMSE and MoCA in Various Clinical Settings- a Brief Overview

Introduction: Cognitive impairment can emerge as part of aging or from conditions affecting brain function, such as stroke, brain tumors, delirium, and neurodegenerative diseases. Effective cognitive assessment in clinical practice requires brief, reliable tests that evaluate specific cognitive domains. The MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination) and MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) are among the most frequently used tools for these evaluations, each offering unique insights. Purpose of Research: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of MMSE and MoCA in diagnosing cognitive impairment and determining their suitability in various clinical settings and patient profiles. Materials and Methods: The analysis includes 61 articles from databases such as PubMed and Scopus, identified using keywords: Neuropsychological Tests, Cognitive Function Tests, MMSE and MoCA. Basic Results: The results indicate that MMSE, while effective for initial dementia screening, is less sensitive to mild cognitive impairment and influenced by education and age. MoCA offers higher sensitivity for MCI and early Alzheimer's stages, making it valuable as a complementary tool to MMSE. Conclusions: Combining MMSE and MoCA assessments can enhance diagnostic accuracy across diverse clinical contexts. Each tool’s unique strengths contribute to a more comprehensive cognitive assessment approach, optimizing diagnostic strategies for specific patient needs.

A fuzzy cognitive map approach to selecting the best knowledge management strategy

Purpose Selecting an appropriate strategy can significantly influence an organization’s direction, but numerous interrelated factors make this decision complex and uncertain. Identifying these relationships and making informed decisions often involves navigating uncertainty. This paper aims to assist managers in leveraging the organization’s intellectual assets to select the most suitable knowledge management strategy. Design/methodology/approach This research proposes fuzzy cognitive maps to model and select the appropriate strategy. Given that knowledge is a company’s most valuable asset and its management is critical, the proposed method for selecting a knowledge management strategy was tested in one of Iran’s largest logistics companies. The factors influencing strategy adoption were treated as concepts in the fuzzy cognitive network, with evaluation criteria applied to three strategies: human-oriented, system-oriented and dynamic. Findings The model’s output identifies the most suitable strategy based on knowledge management principles and the specific characteristics of the target project within the organization. Compared to the most cited paper in this field, the proposed model shows a 0.15% improvement in sensitivity and a 0.22% improvement in separation degree. Originality/value This study proposes a novel method using fuzzy cognitive maps to assist organizations in selecting the best knowledge management strategy, even amidst multiple influencing factors and uncertain conditions.

Configuring Psalm 29 as a Poem: Cognitive Strategies and the Artful Reading Experience

The classic modern framework for biblical Hebrew poetry is based upon intertwined conceptions of parallelism and meter. This framework provides certain assumptions for how biblical lines work, as well as (often implicit) strategies for how biblical poems should be read as poems. These assumptions and strategies are apparent in modern analyses of Psalm 29, especially in the kinds of proposals consistently made for altering the Masoretic Text to make it more “regular”, even in the absence of textual evidence. My recent book on biblical poetry (Unparalleled Poetry: A Cognitive Approach to the Free-Rhythm Verse of the Hebrew Bible, 2023) has challenged these assumptions and strategies, proposing a new framework for biblical poetry that is theoretically grounded in cognitive research and based upon the textual data of the biblical poems. Preferring the term “conformation” to parallelism, I propose that the versification system of biblical poetry is constrained by Gestalt perceptual processing and that the listening or reading strategies demanded by this versification system require part–whole processing of lines into line groupings, line groupings into figures, and figures into the whole poem, as the poem aurally unfolds. In this article, I demonstrate that these part–whole strategies of reading biblical poems make sense of the textual shapes of Psalm 29 and lead to an artful experience of the poem.

Aspectual Pair Formation in Russian Verbs: A Cognitive Approach

Aspectual pair formation in Russian verbs represents a core grammatical feature that governs the temporal and contextual framing of actions. Traditional approaches to aspect focus on morphological mechanisms such as prefixation, suffixation, and suppletion, yet they often fail to address irregularities and semantic nuances. This study adopts a cognitive linguistic perspective, exploring how conceptual metaphors, image schemas, and mental mappings underpin aspectual distinctions. By analyzing patterns of pair formation, including both regular and irregular verbs, the research highlights the cognitive processes that align with bounded and unbounded conceptualizations of actions. The findings contribute to linguistic theory by integrating semantic and cognitive frameworks, while practical applications offer innovative strategies for teaching aspect to learners through mental imagery and contextualized learning. Challenges and unanswered questions, such as the treatment of suppletive forms and cross-linguistic comparisons, underscore the need for further interdisciplinary research to refine this approach.

The article focuses on investigating psychotherapeutic discourse in view of cognitive linguistic approach. The objective of the present research is to reveal and describe the metaphor scenarios that constitute the range of the conceptual metaphor with the target domain PSYCHOTHERAPY, objectifi ed in the psychotherapeutic discourse. The study is based on the novels When Nietzsche Wept (1992) and The Schopenhauer Cure (2005) by a contemporary American existential psychiatrist, professor of psychiatry Irvin Yalom, the author of psychotherapeutic fi ction and nonfi ction. The psychotherapeutic discourse under study is viewed as a specifi c type of discourse that combines the properties of scientifi c discourse of individual and group psychotherapy and fi ction. The methodology of the practical analysis is based on the Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Specifi cally, by applying the theory of metaphor scenarios, grounded by Andreas Musolff , we analyze metaphor scenarios that structure the particular source domains in their discourse manifestations. Within this approach, metaphor scenarios are viewed as discourse-mediated mininaratives, more specifi c than domains. The article discusses the following metaphor scenarios, objectifying the target domain (i.e., the process of group and individual psychotherapy) in the psychotherapeutic discourse by Irving Yalom: PSYCHOTHERAPY IS JOURNEY → PSYCHOTHERAPY IS MOUNTAIN TRIP BY THE TORRENT, PSYCHOTHERAPY IS SEA VOYAGE, PSYCHOTHERAPY IS FAMILY RELATIONS, PSYCHOTHERAPY IS HOUSECLEANING, PSYCHOTHERAPY IS CHIMNEY SWEEPING, PSYCHOTHERAPY IS CHESS GAME, PSYCHOTHERAPY IS GARDENING, PSYCHOTHERAPY IS DRESS REHEARSAL. The metaphoric scenarios, being discourse-based, highlight the relevant conceptual properties of the target domain in the novels, revealing focal points for conceptualizing group and individual therapy process. Towards a comprehensive understanding of science practices: a heuristic for increasing educator familiarity across a series of science education frameworks

Scientific practices describe behaviors scientists engage in while investigating the natural world. Educators should be aware of different science practice frameworks to better understand their students' progression for learning science practices across the K-20 spectrum. For example, a high school AP instructor would benefit from understanding both the K-12 frameworks their students have already experienced and the future undergraduate frameworks their students are moving toward. We were interested in exploring educator familiarity with the scientific practices outlined in the Next Generation Science and Engineering Practices, the Advanced Placement Science Practices, and Vision & Change Core Competencies. In practice, all science educators are teaching the same set of core principles around which these different frameworks are built. Under this view, it is a missed opportunity to not consider or draw on different frameworks to expand one’s teaching practice. Using a cognitive constructionist approach, we describe the implementation of the “Science Practice Frameworks Concept Map Activity,” designed to (1) introduce educators to scientific practices contained within Science Practice Frameworks and (2) show educators that despite these science practices targeting different student populations they are, at their core, very similar and often overlap. We present data showing a positive shift in educator familiarity with Science Practice Frameworks and present examples of participant concept maps that help us begin to understand how educators perceive the frameworks and the relationships between them, ensuring that educators are better prepared to guide students through a comprehensive understanding of science practices.

Approximate planning in spatial search.

How people plan is an active area of research in cognitive science, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. However, tasks traditionally used to study planning in the laboratory tend to be constrained to artificial environments, such as Chess and bandit problems. To date there is still no agreed-on model of how people plan in realistic contexts, such as navigation and search, where values intuitively derive from interactions between perception and cognition. To address this gap and move towards a more naturalistic study of planning, we present a novel spatial Maze Search Task (MST) where the costs and rewards are physically situated as distances and locations. We used this task in two behavioral experiments to evaluate and contrast multiple distinct computational models of planning, including optimal expected utility planning, several one-step heuristics inspired by studies of information search, and a family of planners that deviate from optimal planning, in which action values are estimated by the interactions between perception and cognition. We found that people's deviations from optimal expected utility are best explained by planners with a limited horizon, however our results do not exclude the possibility that in human planning action values may be also affected by cognitive mechanisms of numerosity and probability perception. This result makes a novel theoretical contribution in showing that limited planning horizon generalizes to spatial planning, and demonstrates the value of our multi-model approach for understanding cognition.

Enhancing healthcare professionals' biopsychosocial perspective to chronic pain: assessing the impact of implementing an interdisciplinary training program.

Advancements in clinical science have shown the necessity for a paradigm shift away from a biomedical toward a biopsychosocial approach. Yet, the translation from clinical science into clinical practice is challenging. The aim of this study was to assess the short-term and mid-term changes in pain knowledge and attitudes and guideline-adherent recommendations of healthcare professionals (HCP) by means of an interdisciplinary training program (ITP) about chronic pain. Belgian HCPs, with a priority for medical doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, psychologists, and pharmacists in primary care, participated in the ITP, which contained 2 e-learning modules and two 7-hour workshops provided in small interdisciplinary groups in 5 cities. The objective of ITP was to improve HCP's competencies for integrating biopsychosocial chronic pain management with a cognitive behavioral approach into clinical practice. Primary outcomes were changes in knowledge and attitudes about pain and guideline-adherent recommendations for continuation of physical activity, sports, and work; avoiding bed rest; and not supporting opioid usage measured through 2 clinical vignettes. They were measured before, immediately after, and 6 months after the ITP. Changes were analyzed using (generalized) linear mixed models. A total of 405 HCPs participated. The knowledge and attitudes about pain scores improved at post-training (Δ = 9.04, 95% confidence interval 7.72-10.36) and at 6-month follow-up (Δ = 7.16, 95% confidence interval 5.73-8.59). After the training program, HCPs provided significantly more recommendations in accordance with clinical guidelines. Thus, an ITP can improve the biopsychosocial perspective of chronic pain management among HCPs in the short-term and mid-term.

POETICS OF MUSICAL BAROQUE: AESTHETICS, PERFORMING TRADITIONS, INTERPETATION

The purpose of the article is to identify performance strategies in contemporary musical culture that are related to the interpretation of ancient styles and genres as authentic examples of the cultural process in the age of globalization, based on the comprehension of the components of the poetics of the musical baroque. The research methodology is based on the cognitive, interpretive, historical and stylistic approaches necessary for a comprehensive study of this topic. The gender specification of performance is highlighted. The author analyses iconic works (Dardano's aria “Pena tiranna” from Act II of the opera “Amadis of Gaula”) and performances (the Sesto part from the opera “Julius Caesar” by G.F. Handel) in which the gender approach to the authentic “opera text” prevails; the role of the countertenor in contemporary art is characterized from the standpoint of historically informed performance. In connection with the great popularity and spread of the art of countertenors in the performance of ancient vocal music, the question of gender identification as a performance strategy has arisen, in the development of the concept of V.O. Gigolaeva. The conclusions outline the components of the performing poetics of the musical baroque era: the parity of vocal and instrumental thinking, sound imitation, improvisation on the contralto, and the performance of one's own cadences. The stylistic differences in the performance of Baroque music in terms of vibration, which is an inherent quality and characteristic of the voice, and methods of colourful sound formation that provide unlimited possibilities for performance are indicated.

Rethinking lexical semantic fields: relevance and local holism

Abstract This paper aims to single out some pathologies of current lexical semantics, which suffers from both the trauma of immanence and the opposite anxiety of rooting all knowledge in the pre-semiotic dimension, or entrusting sense-making entirely to context. To untangle these pitfalls, the dialogue with a phenomenological cognitive semiotics may prove fertile to focus on the lexicon as a type of storage and a type of memory; that is, a type of accumulated and sedimented knowledge based on the dynamical re-pertinentization of invariants. In particular, the perspective developed by Sonesson shows striking coincidences with De Mauro’s semiotic semantics, which already provides a solid foundation for rethinking the notion of lexical field drawing on an “authentic” Humboldtian and Saussurean heritage. Therefore, I will briefly review some principles of lexical structural semantics, with the aim of showing how these notions, once emancipated from the Saussurean vulgata, can not only be compatible with a cognitive phenomenological approach, but also facilitate the rehabilitation of a theoretical apparatus still valuable for both (lexical) semantics and semiotics. Although focused on lexical fields, some of the issues addressed can be extended to language and languages, as well as to other types of semiotic systems, to shed light on controversial themes such as the embodiment of signs and the autonomy of linguistics and semantics.

THE COGNITIVE ELECTRONIC WARFARE IN THE AGE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Collecting and acting on data has increased the military’s dependency on the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS). Electronic Warfare (EW) controls the Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS) in order to detect, analyze, and track potential threats. EW provides situational awareness for diplomatic insights, defensive measures and offensive options for each country. EW enables Joint Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (JEMSO). In the EM Operation Environment, the armed forces exploit, protect and attack. More advanced EW can identify, intercept and decode the adversaries’ Data. It can also project directed energy to disrupt enemy operations, reducing the impact of conflicts or preventing some armed conflicts before they begin.Applying cognitive systems to EW helps the army personnel identify patterns and improve the systems, as well as anticipating the COA. Cognitive Electronic Warfare systems interpret a large amount of data from a range of vast sources to provide hypotheses for action plans. Combining human strategies with computer input ensures the success of Cognitive EW approach. Leaving data collection and probability calculations to computers let humans time to think, to be creative and to use their intuiton in order to find the best solutions.

Graphemic Variation in Morphosyntactic Context: The Syllable u in Classic Maya Hieroglyphic Writing.

Throughout the long history of Classic Maya hieroglyphs, a logosyllabic writing system used from the late first millennium BCE through the mid-second millennium CE in southern Mesoamerica, the most commonly recorded phonetic value was the syllable u (/ʔu/). With over a dozen different u hieroglyphs, Classic Maya scribes had more options for recording /ʔu/ than any other syllable or logograph. Cognitive approaches to writing systems typically attribute graphemic variation (i.e., alternation between signs with equivalent linguistic value) to semantic differences like animacy or to non-linguistic factors like identity. Distribution of Classic Maya u hieroglyphs, however, suggests that morphosyntactic context influenced which grapheme scribes wrote and when. This case suggests that scribal knowledge of Classic Maya hieroglyphs included ideas about writing's relationship to language. It also highlights the cognitive relevance of morphosyntax for a writing system's users as they differentiate among graphic signs with identical linguistic denotation.
