Formation of Radial Patterns via Mixed Attractive and Repulsive Interactions for Schrödinger Systems

This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of least energy vector solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger systems with mixed couplings of attractive and repulsive forces. We focus here on the radially symmetric case while the general studies were already conducted in our earlier work [J. Byeon, Y. Sato, and Z.-Q. Wang, J. Math. Pures Appl. (9), 106 (2016), pp. 477--511], [J. Byeon, Y. Sato, and Z.-Q. Wang, J. Fixed Point Theory Appl., 19 (2017), pp. 559--583]. Though there is still the general phenomenon of component-wise pattern formation with co-existence of partial synchronization and segregation for positive least energy vector solutions as in [J. Byeon, Y. Sato, and Z.-Q. Wang, J. Math. Pures Appl. (9), 106 (2016), pp. 477--511], [J. Byeon, Y. Sato, and Z.-Q. Wang, J. Fixed Point Theory Appl., 19 (2017), pp. 559--583], in our case of radially symmetric domains, it turns out that the energy of synchronization part may be concentrated either on the center of the domain or on the boundary of the domain depending on the spatial dimension of the domain. This is a distinct new feature from [J. Byeon, Y. Sato, and Z.-Q. Wang, J. Math. Pures Appl. (9), 106 (2016), pp. 477--511], [J. Byeon, Y. Sato, and Z.-Q. Wang, J. Fixed Point Theory Appl., 19 (2017), pp. 559--583] due to the radially symmetric property. Our approach develops techniques of multiscale asymptotic estimates.

Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Cancer in Tuberculous Lymphadenopathy: An Unfortunate Dual Pathology

Papillary thyroid carcinoma usually spreads through lymphatic route, presents as regional lymphadenopathy similar to extra-pulmonary tuberculosis of the cervical regions. We report the case of a 77-year-old woman with synchronous coexistence of tuberculosis and metastatic carcinoma in dissected lymph nodes. Total thyroidectomy is the standard care of treatment with additional neck dissection in clinically positive neck nodes. In the endemic areas and previous history of tuberculosis contact, the possibility of synchronous co-occurrence of these two pathologies should be considered thus anti-tuberculous treatment can be initiated concurrently.

A Four-Dimensional Hyperchaotic Finance System and Its Control Problems

The construction and several control problems of a new hyperchaotic finance system are investigated in this paper. Firstly, a new four-dimensional hyperchaotic finance system is introduced, based on which a new hyperchaos is then generated by setting parameters. And the qualitative analysis is numerically studied to confirm the dynamical processes, for example, the bifurcation diagram, Poincaré sections, Lyapunov exponents, and phase portraits. Interestingly, the obtained results show that this new system can display complex characteristics: chaotic, hyperchaotic, and quasiperiodic phenomena occur alternately versus parameters. Secondly, three single input adaptive controllers are designed to realize the control problems of such system: stabilization, synchronization, and coexistence of antisynchronization and complete synchronization, respectively. It is noted that the designed controllers are simpler than the existing ones. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical results.

Coexistence of identical synchronization, antiphase synchronization and inverse full state hybrid projective synchronization in different dimensional fractional-order chaotic systems

The topic related to the coexistence of different synchronization types between fractional-order chaotic systems is almost unexplored in the literature. Referring to commensurate and incommensurate fractional systems, this paper presents a new approach to rigorously study the coexistence of some synchronization types between nonidentical systems characterized by different dimensions and different orders. In particular, the paper shows that identical synchronization (IS), antiphase synchronization (AS), and inverse full state hybrid projective synchronization (IFSHPS) coexist when synchronizing a three-dimensional master system with a fourth-dimensional slave system. The approach, which can be applied to a wide class of chaotic/hyperchaotic fractional-order systems in the master-slave configuration, is based on two new theorems involving the fractional Lyapunov method and stability theory of linear fractional systems. Two examples are provided to highlight the capability of the conceived method. In particular, referring to commensurate systems, the coexistence of IS, AS, and IFSHPS is successfully achieved between the chaotic three-dimensional Rössler system of order 2.7 and the hyperchaotic four-dimensional Chen system of order 3.84. Finally, referring to incommensurate systems, the coexistence of IS, AS, and IFSHPS is successfully achieved between the chaotic three-dimensional Lü system of order 2.955 and the hyperchaotic four-dimensional Lorenz system of order 3.86.

The oldest turtle from Portugal corresponding to the only pre-Kimmeridgian plesiochelyid (basal Eucryptodira) recognized at the generic level

:A shell coming from an upper Oxfordian section of the Lusitanian Basin located in Alqueidão da Serra (Municipality of Porto de Mós, West Central Portugal) is here presented. It corresponds to the oldest remain of a turtle identified in Portugal. In fact, the record of Jurassic turtles identified in pre-Kimmeridgian levels of Europe is very scarce. The new specimen represents the second worldwide identification of a Plesiochelyid turtle (basal Eucryptodira) performed in pre-Kimmeridgian levels, being the only one recognized at generic level. Therefore, this specimen corresponds to the oldest identification of Craspedochelys, a genus well-represented in Kimmeridgian and Tithonian levels of several European countries. This finding contributes the first evidence on the synchronous coexistence of more than a member of Plesiochelyidae in pre-Kimmeridgian levels, which provides arguments to justify the relatively wide diversity known for this exclusively Jurassic clade during the Kimmeridgian and the Tithonian.

Mixed coherent states in coupled chaotic systems: Design of secure wireless communication

A general coupling design is proposed to realize a mixed coherent (MC) state: coexistence of complete synchronization, antisynchronization, and amplitude death in different pairs of similar state variables of the coupled chaotic system. The stability of coupled system is ensured by the Lyapunov function and a scaling of each variable is also separately taken care of. When heterogeneity as a parameter mismatch is introduced in the coupled system, the coupling function facilitates to retain its coherence and displays the global stability with renewed scaling factor. Robust synchronization features facilitated by a MC state enable to design a dual modulation scheme: binary phase shift key (BPSK) and parameter mismatch shift key (PMSK), for secure data transmission. Two classes of decoders (coherent and noncoherent) are discussed, the noncoherent decoder shows better performance over the coherent decoder, mostly a noncoherent demodulator is preferred in biological implant applications. Both the modulation schemes are demonstrated numerically by using the Lorenz oscillator and the BPSK scheme is demonstrated experimentally using radio signals.

Pattern formation via mixed interactions for coupled Schrödinger equations under Neumann boundary condition

This paper is a sequel to Byeon et al. (J Math Pures Appl 106(9):477–511, 2016) concerning the asymptotic behavior of positive least energy vector solutions to nonlinear Schrodinger systems with mixed couplings that arise from models in Bose–Einstein condensates and nonlinear optics. In [8] we treated homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. In the current paper we investigate the case of homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We show that due to mixed attractive and repulsive interactions the least energy solutions exhibit component-wise pattern formations, in particular, co-existence of partial synchronization and segregation. We employ multiple scalings to carry out a refined asymptotic analysis of convergence to a multiple scaled limiting system.

Control problems of Chen–Lee system by adaptive control method

This paper investigates the control problems of Chen–Lee system. Based on control theory of nonlinear systems, the adaptive controllers were proposed to achieve stabilization, synchronization, coexistence of synchronization and anti-synchronization, and projective synchronization of such system. It should be pointed out that the obtained controllers are not only simpler than the existing ones, but also are physical. It is also noted that the obtained methods can be extended to a general chaotic system. Numerical simulations are used to verify the validity and effectiveness of the obtained results.

A new approach to study the coexistence of some synchronization types between chaotic maps with different dimensions

When synchronizing chaotic systems, an interesting phenomenon that may occur is the coexistence of several synchronization types. Referring to discrete-time chaotic (hyperchaotic) systems, this paper presents a new approach to rigorously study the coexistence of some synchronization types between maps with different dimensions. By exploiting a Lyapunov-based approach, the paper first analyzes the coexistence of full state hybrid projective synchronization and generalized synchronization when the drive system is a three-dimensional map and the response system is a two-dimensional map. Successively, the coexistence of three different synchronization types is illustrated, i.e., inverse projective synchronization, inverse generalized synchronization and Q–S synchronization are proved to coexist between two-dimensional drive systems and three-dimensional response systems. Finally, by exploiting a pole placement technique, the coexistence of antiphase synchronization and dislocated full state hybrid projective synchronization is proved to be achieved between three-dimensional drive system maps and two-dimensional response system maps. Since synchronization is achieved in finite time, this last case represents an example of dead beat coexistence of some synchronization types in maps with different dimensions. Several numerical examples of coexistence of synchronization types are illustrated, with the aim to show the effectiveness of the novel approach developed herein.

Pattern formation via mixed attractive and repulsive interactions for nonlinear Schrödinger systems

The paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of positive least energy vector solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger systems with mixed couplings which arise from models in Bose–Einstein condensates and nonlinear optics. We show that due to mixed attractive and repulsive interactions the least energy solutions exhibit new interesting component-wise pattern formations, including co-existence of partial synchronization and segregation. The novelty of our approach is the successful use of multiple scaling to carry out a refined asymptotic analysis of convergence to a multiply scaled limiting system.

Coexistence of synchronization and anti-synchronization in chaotic systems

The coexistence of anti-synchronization and synchronization in chaotic systems is investigated. A novel algorithm is proposed to determine the variables of the master system that should anti-synchronize with corresponding variables of the slave system. Control strategies that guarantee the coexistence of synchronization and anti-synchronization in the unified chaotic system are presented; while numerical simulations are employed to validate and illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Synchronization transition with coexistence of attractors in coupled discontinuous system

The studies of extended dynamics systems are relevant to the understanding of spatiotemporal patterns observed in diverse fields. One of the well-established models for such complex systems is the coupled map lattices, and several features of pattern formation including synchronization, unsynchronization, traveling waves and clustering synchronization are found. Among the above-mentioned patterns, chaotic synchronization has been intensively investigated in recent years. It has been demonstrated that two or more chaotic systems can be synchronized by linking them with mutual coupling or a common signal or some signals. Over the last decade, a number of theoretical methods have been presented to deal with this problem, such as the methods of master stability functions and eigenvalue analysis. While much effort has been devoted to the networks with different topological structures in continuous systems. The coupled discontinuous maps have been investigated with increasing interest in recent years, they showed that the complete synchronization in coupled discontinuous systems is more complicated than in coupled continuous systems. However, a similar problem of synchronization transition in coupled discontinuous systems is much less known.The synchronization transition in coupled discontinuous map lattices is studied. The average order parameter and maximal Lyapunov exponent are calculated to diagnose the synchronization of coupled piecewise maps. The results indicate that there exist the periodic clusters and the synchronization state, and a new transition style from periodic cluster states to complete synchronization states is found. The periodic cluster states consist of two kinds of periodic orbits: symmetric periodic orbits and asymmetric periodic orbits.Based on the pattern analysis, the common features of the patterns are constructed by the two periodic attractors, and the periodic orbit is an unstable periodic orbit of the isolate map. The discontinuities in a system can divide the phase space into individual zones of different dynamical features. The interactions between the local nonlinearity and the spatial coupling confine orbit into certain spaces and form a dynamic balance between two periodic clusters. The system can reach complete synchronization states when the balance is off. It is shown that synchronization transition of the coupled discontinuous map can exhibit the different processes, which depends on coupling strength. Four transition modes are found in coupled discontinuous map: 1) the transition, from the coexistence of chaotic synchronization and chaotic un-synchronization states to the coexistence of chaotic synchronization, chaotic un-synchronization, symmetric periodic orbits and asymmetric periodic orbits; 2) the transition from the coexistence of chaotic synchronization, chaotic un-synchronization, symmetric periodic orbits and asymmetric periodic orbits to the coexistence of chaotic synchronization, symmetric periodic orbits and asymmetric periodic orbits; 3) the transition from the coexistence of chaotic synchronization, symmetric periodic orbits and asymmetric periodic orbits to the coexistence of chaotic synchronization and symmetric periodic orbits; 4) the transition from the coexistence of chaotic synchronization and symmetric periodic orbits to the chaotic synchronization. Because the local dynamics has discontinuous points, the coupled system shows a riddle basin characteristic in the phase space, and the synchronization transition of coupled piecewise maps looks more complex than continuous system.

Mixed Synchronization of Chaotic Financial Systems by Using Linear Feedback Control

This paper deals with the mixed synchronization (coexistence of synchronization and antisynchronization) of two chaotic financial systems. Two mixed synchronization criteria for two chaotic financial systems are derived with a single controller and without external controls, respectively. In addition, the control method and synchronization criteria are applied to study the mixed synchronization of a class of modified chaotic financial systems. Three examples are used to illustrate the effectiveness of our derived results.

Brazilian Portuguese noun phrases: An optimality theoretic perspective

In this paper we examine the nominal system in Brazilian Portuguese (BrP), a challenge to cross-linguistic studies which rely on the generalization that a language that has indefinites should not have bare nouns. BrP has bare singulars, bare plurals, singular and plural indefinites. We examine the behavior of these phrases, mostly in object position of episodic predicates, and propose that each has a different semantics. The nominal system of BrP can be successfully explained, we argue, within the bi-directional Optimality Theory (biOT) theoretical framework developed by Hendriks et al. (2010). This approach allows us to describe and explain patterns of competition, and accounts for language variation by constraint reranking. For BrP, we propose the synchronic coexistence of two grammars: bare plurals appear in the formal variety of BrP that maintains plural agreement, and bare singulars appear in informal spoken BrP, along with plural definites and indefinites that lack plural agreement on the noun. Under this analysis, BPs denote inclusive plurals, while BSs get a non-atomic semantics that covers both mass and plural interpretations.

Least Energy Solutions for Nonlinear Schrödinger Systems with Mixed Attractive and Repulsive Couplings

Abstract In this paper we study the ground state solutions for a nonlinear elliptic system of three equations which comes from models in Bose-Einstein condensates. Comparing with existing works in the literature which have been on purely attractive or purely repulsive cases, our investigation focuses on the effect of mixed interaction of attractive and repulsive couplings. We establish the existence of least energy positive solutions and study asymptotic profile of the ground state solutions, giving indication of co-existence of synchronization and segregation. In particular we show symmetry breaking for the ground state solutions.

Multiple positive solutions for Schrödinger systems with mixed couplings

We study the effects of mixed couplings for nonlinear Schrodinger systems. We show due to the mixed couplings there exist multiple vector positive solutions which exhibit interesting new patterns of co-existence of synchronization and segregation. For a 3-system we show the existence of multiple positive vector solutions with the first two components being synchronized and segregated from the third component. We investigate the asymptotic of these solutions with a large attractive coupling constant.

Synchronization and Antisynchronization for a Class of Chaotic Systems by a Simple Adaptive Controller

This paper investigates the synchronization and antisynchronization for a class of chaotic system. Firstly, a necessary and sufficient condition is proposed to synchronize and antisynchronization simultaneously for the chaotic systems. Secondly, two methods are obtained to realize coexistence of synchronization and antisynchronization in the chaotic systems, and the corresponding adaptive controllers are also given. Finally, two numerical examples with simulation verify the correctness and effectiveness of the obtained results.

Hysteretic transitions in the Kuramoto model with inertia.

We report finite-size numerical investigations and mean-field analysis of a Kuramoto model with inertia for fully coupled and diluted systems. In particular, we examine, for a gaussian distribution of the frequencies, the transition from incoherence to coherence for increasingly large system size and inertia. For sufficiently large inertia the transition is hysteretic, and within the hysteretic region clusters of locked oscillators of various sizes and different levels of synchronization coexist. A modification of the mean-field theory developed by Tanaka, Lichtenberg, and Oishi [Physica D 100, 279 (1997)] allows us to derive the synchronization curve associated to each of these clusters. We have also investigated numerically the limits of existence of the coherent and of the incoherent solutions. The minimal coupling required to observe the coherent state is largely independent of the system size, and it saturates to a constant value already for moderately large inertia values. The incoherent state is observable up to a critical coupling whose value saturates for large inertia and for finite system sizes, while in the thermodinamic limit this critical value diverges proportionally to the mass. By increasing the inertia the transition becomes more complex, and the synchronization occurs via the emergence of clusters of whirling oscillators. The presence of these groups of coherently drifting oscillators induces oscillations in the order parameter. We have shown that the transition remains hysteretic even for randomly diluted networks up to a level of connectivity corresponding to a few links per oscillator. Finally, an application to the Italian high-voltage power grid is reported, which reveals the emergence of quasiperiodic oscillations in the order parameter due to the simultaneous presence of many competing whirling clusters.

Adaptive Hybrid Synchronization of Lorenz-84 System with Uncertain Parameters

This paper presents the adaptive control and hybrid synchronization of Lorenz-84 chaotic system using a master-slave topology. The Lorenz-84 is an 11-term dissipative system that possessed four quadratic nonlinearities in its coupled algebraic structure which results to the evolution of a dense chaotic attractors in both 2-D and 3-D spaces. Firstly, an adaptive nonlinear feedback controller was designed to suppress the chaotic dynamics of the system. By using Lyapunov stability criterion, the asymptotic stability of the error states was guaranteed and the state dynamics were stabilized. Secondly, adaptive nonlinear feedback controllers were designed to guarantee the co-existence of synchronization and anti-synchronization of the system. By suitable selection of feedback coefficients and Lyapunov function candidate, the uncertain parameters of the slave system were estimated. Numerical simulations via MATLAB show the convergence of the uncertain parameters to their true values after a transient time while the two systems synchronized completely.

Hybrid Synchronization of Three Identical Coupled Chaotic Systems Using the Direct Design Method

This paper investigates the hybrid synchronization behavior (coexistence of anti-synchronization and complete synchronization) in three coupled chaotic systems with ring connections. We employ the direct design method to design the hybird synchronization controllers, which transform the error system into a nonlinear system with a special antisymmetric structure. A simple stability criterion is then derived for reaching hybrid synchronization. Finally, numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.
