Emerging Community-Based Blue Economy Industry Sectors in Bintan: Examples From Kampong Teripang

This study examines the emergence of community-based blue economy industry sectors in Bintan, Indonesia, focusing on Kampong Teripang as a case study. Using a qualitative approach involving interviews, observations, and a literature review, this research explores the ways in which Kampong Teripang has empowered local communities. The findings reveal that Kampong Teripang has successfully mobilized local residents as sea cucumber collectors and workers within the village, while also implementing sea cucumber aquaculture. The establishment of Kampong Teripang in Bintan has not only generated significant economic value for entrepreneurs but has also contributed to improving the livelihoods of the surrounding community. This research highlights the potential of community-based initiatives to drive sustainable economic growth and social development in coastal areas.

Caracterización de las comunidades ícticas de charcos intermareales en la isla de Tenerife

The island of Tenerife has experienced significant population growth and urban development in coastal areas, resulting in a negative impact on the ichthyic communities associated with its intertidal pools, which act as a refuge and nursery for a large number of species, many of them of fishing interest. In order to characterize these populations and know their conservation status, sampling was carried out using baited remote underwater video (BRUV) in four areas in Tenerife located on the north coast, Punta del Hidalgo and Finca El Apio, and on the south, Las Galletas and Punta Rasca. A total of 13 fish species were found throughout the sampling, 7 of them of fishing interest in the Canary Islands. According to the results obtained, a significant variation can be seen between the communities of the sampled localities. Specifically, it was observed that Punta del Hidalgo has the highest fish abundance and richness of species. On the other hand, it was found that the locality of Las Galletas differs significantly from the rest, presenting a low abundance of species, especially those of fishing interest.

The aim of the article is to study the conceptual foundations and global significance of the blue economy and provide recommendations for ensuring the economic development of the coastal areas of Ukraine in the context of the sustainable blue economy of the EU. The article examines the conceptual foundations of the blue economy and analyzes the global significance of its sustainable development in international declarations and legal documents. The main problems on which international attention in this area is focused are identified as follows: the complexity of approaches and methods for assessing the economic, social and environmental impacts of the blue economy on the development of coastal areas; defining a clear standard of regional and local governance necessary for the blue growth of territories; different degrees of institutional involvement of countries in the blue economy. With this in mind, the article proposes approaches to stimulating a sustainable blue economy in coastal areas. The article examines the regulatory framework of Ukraine and academic developments on the formation of the foundations of the domestic blue economy in recent years. It is emphasized that initiatives for a sustainable blue economy in Ukraine have appeared, first of all, at the local level, the stakeholders of which are local governments, technological business communities, representatives of academia and higher education, innovation clusters and civil society organizations. The sustainable blue economy reflects the process of coastal and maritime governance through debatable and substantive regionalization, in which new partnerships between public and private sector actors build networks, boundaries, and management methods. Of course, today we are talking about the unoccupied sea and coastal spaces of Ukraine, so we have outlined the challenges that our country faces in this area in the current conditions. In the context of the European integration movement, taking into account the legal conditions of martial law and post-war expectations, we see the vectors of modernization of the economic development of the coastal areas of Ukraine as follows: the development of a transparent framework policy for the development of a sustainable blue economy in Ukraine; institutional and innovative approach to coastal developmental management; economic development and security; local approach; stimulating the innovation ecosystem; inclusive blue economy; digital technologies in support of coastal development initiatives; ensuring the protection and restoration of the coastal and maritime environment; use of the cultural and historical heritage of coastal regions; proper democratic governance.

Aral Sea: Environmental disaster and its consequences

The article examines the history of the Aral Sea and the environmental disaster of the twentieth century associated with the disappearance of the world's fourth sea body of water. A comprehensive author’s research at the interdisciplinary level showed the role and place of the Aral Sea from the moment of its formation in the surrounding space, its influence on the socio-economic development of coastal areas. The purpose of the undertaken research was to determine the cause-and-effect relationships that determined the large-scale man-made environmental disaster that occurred on the border line of the two states of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The authors tried to show how the disappearance of the sea affected the ecological state of the environment, namely the Kyzyl-Orda region, where the remains of the Aral Sea are located. The article provides statistical indicators on the topic of the research, their comparative analysis and the dynamics of the state of the environmental situation in the Aral Sea region. The authors introduce a visual representation of the changes in the Aral Sea throughout modern and recent times. In conclusion, the authors demonstrate the existence of measures taken by the state in an attempt to restore the Small Aral Sea by constructing a hydraulic structure.

Analysis of coastline changes using Sentinel 2A imagery in the coastal area of West Pandeglang, Banten

Coastline changes on the west coast of the Pandeglang Regency are caused by hydrooceanographic parameters and human activities. These changes can be observed through remote sensing. This study aimed to identify and map these changes. The shoreline of the Sentinel 2A satellite image was extracted using the Tasseled Cap method. The shoreline was then calculated using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) method, and field data were collected using Ground Control Points (GCP). The analysis of shoreline changes indicated the dominance of abrasion over accretion. The most significant abrasion occurred in Sidamukti Village at a rate of 26.65 metres per year, while the largest accretion occurred in Sukajadi Village at a rate of 24.92 metres per year. A comparison of the categories of coastline changes can indicate areas that are susceptible to large waves. This information can be used to provide both experience and knowledge to the people of the Pandeglang Regency. The study of coastline changes is an important reference for the development of coastal areas, harbors, tourism, and cultivation.

Spatial and temporal study of estimating carbon stocks distribution of mangrove forest in coastal area of Teluknaga, Tangerang

Coastal mangrove forests play a crucial role in balancing carbon emissions in the atmosphere as they are a significant carbon store. Previous studies have shown that mangroves can absorb carbon four times more efficiently than terrestrial tropical forests. Unfortunately, the massive development and land use changes in Teluknaga District's coastal areas threaten these ecosystems' existence. To address this concern, efforts are being made to increase conservation, including estimating carbon stock. The aim of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution of biomass and carbon stock of mangrove forests in Teluknaga between 2016-2022 based on vegetation indices such as ARVI, EVI, and SAVI. Sentinel-2 was calculated into ARVI, EVI, and SAVI vegetation indices to model biomass. Statistical correlation analysis was also used to determine the best vegetation index to model biomass in the coastal area of Teluknaga District. This study found that the ARVI vegetation index had the best correlation (R = 0.60) for modeling biomass, with an RMSE value of 36.67 kg/pixel. Most mangrove forests in the coastal area of Teluknaga District showed an increase in biomass and carbon stock between 2016-2022, with significant growth in Muara and Lemo villages' mangrove forests, which is in line with an increase in the area and density of mangrove forests.

Community Activity in Environmental Management Mangrove Forest in Pariaman City

The potential and unique natural resources in the Pariaman Mangrove Forest have a very significant role in the economic, social, cultural, and environmental development of coastal communities. Environmental management of the Pariaman Mangrove Forest is one of the efforts to support the development of coastal areas optimally, wisely, and responsibly, of course by involving community participation and various related parties and while still paying attention to the environmental carrying capacity of the Pariaman Mangrove Forest. This research aims to provide an overview of community activity in managing the Mangrove Forest environment in Pariaman City. Enthusiasm, desires, and hopes as well as the social concern of the local community are forms of community participation in efforts to manage the Mangrove Forest environment. Community participation is a supporting factor in efforts to develop the coastal area of Pariaman City. The description of community participation in the environmental management of Mangrove Forests is shown by the high level of community desire to protect and preserve them as well as their hope for efforts to protect or improve Mangrove Forests. The form of community participation is voluntary or self-directed participation.

Historical urban planning analysis of the Kama and Toima riverside areas (on the example of the city of Elabuga in the 19TH -20TH century)

In cities on large rivers, increasing attention is being given to coastal areas as the basis for their sustainable development. At the same time, most of the development proposals are too radical and require significant financial investments that are not available in small cities. To make the right decisions, a historical urban-planning analysis is required to identify the reasons for the decline of coastal areas, and further arguments are needed in support of decisions for their transformation. This study is an attempt to verify the statement that the sustainable development of coastal areas should take into account the previous evolutionary trends, and their development needs to be monitored regularly in order to make timely adjustments to their functional zoning. Using the example of the old city of Elabuga located on two rivers, Kama and Toima, the main reasons influencing its zoning are highlighted. Depending on momentary interest in a particular function, it may either evolve and flourish or fall in decline, but is never completely driven out. Based on the analysis, a potential path for the development of coastal areas is identified by raising social interest and demand for historical functions through their renovation, additions, and improvement of accessibility.

Grid Impact of Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities-Based Community Microgrids

The overarching goal of this paper is to explore innovative ways to adapt existing urban infrastructure to achieve a greener and more resilient city, specifically on synergies between the power grid, the wastewater treatment system, and community development in low-lying coastal areas. This study addresses the technical feasibility, benefits, and barriers of using wastewater resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) as community-scale microgrids. These microgrids will act as central resilience and community development hubs, enabling the adoption of renewable energy and the provision of ongoing services under emergency conditions. Load flow modeling and analysis were carried out using real network data for a case study in New York City (NYC). The results validate the hypothesis that distributed energy resources (DERs) at WRRFs can play a role in improving grid operation and resiliency.

The role of community-based tourism for mangroves conservation in Banten, Indonesia

Mangroves provide multiple ecological functions such as connectors and balancers of land and sea ecosystems. The presence of mangroves in coastal areas is very important for reducing the impact of tsunamis and tidal flooding. The role of local communities in the form of community-based tourism models, in conserving mangrove forests has not been extensively studied. This study aims to fill the gap in evaluating local communities’ involvement, particularly under the tourism-based communities’ model, in conserving mangroves and, at the same time, gaining economic benefits. This study was conducted in the mangrove villages of “Patikang,” Citeureup Village, and Pandeglang Regency. This study applied mixed methods that combine both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Primary data were obtained directly from the local community through using questionnaires, interviews, and field observations. Secondary data collection was carried out through a literature review of mangrove conservation and community development in coastal areas. Our study found that local community-based tourism namely “Putri Gundul” played a very important role in increasing community awareness to conserve mangrove forests. The community has gained more knowledge on the biology of mangrove species and the ecology of mangroves for mangrove restoration. Furthermore, the involvement of local communities in mangrove conservation and restoration can increase the economy of communities by producing various products from mangroves.

Advancing Development: The Impact of Geoscience Education in Nigeria’s Rural Coastal Areas of the Niger Delta Region

The Niger Delta region of Nigeria is a significant ecological and environmental zone that is classified as a rural coastal area. The development of this region is critical to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth. One of the key factors that have been identified to have a significant impact on the development of this region is geosciences education. Geoscience education helps to develop a better understanding of the natural environment, including the processes that have shaped it and the various resources available to it. This abstract presents an analysis of the impact of geoscience education in the rural coastal areas of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. A review of existing literature on geosciences education and its impact on the development of rural coastal areas was conducted. The results show that geoscience education has significant potential in the development of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The research also indicates that geoscience education enhances awareness of the environmental challenges facing the region, engenders better adaptation to climate change, and underscores the importance of natural resources. Furthermore, geoscience education improves the competitiveness of the rural coastal area residents in the area of agriculture, fisheries, mining, and tourism. Therefore, it is recommended that geoscience education should be included in the curriculum of primary and secondary schools in the rural coastal areas of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. As well as providing more opportunities for tertiary education and training in relevant geoscience subjects. Furthermore, the importance of these subjects should be widely publicized among community leaders, stakeholders, and residents to ensure they understand the positive impact on education and their development.

Enhancing Sustainability and Resilience in Surabaya Coastal Residence Through Advance High Water Level Modelling

Coastal areas are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change particularly the sustainability and resilience of the coastal residences. Surabaya as a coastal city in Indonesia is not an exception in facing the significant challenges. By developing an advanced high water modelling, it could predict the impacts of high-water levels on coastal residences. The spatial and temporal patterns of flooding events are analysed, allowing for the identification of vulnerable areas. This study shows the coastal residence in Surabaya City and their potential to be affected by tidal flooding based on the high resolution satellite imagery and actual Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements. The result shows that an area with no barrier to separate the residential area with the sea has a bigger chance to be affected by tidal flooding. In this research, the study locations are divided into northern, middle, and southern locations. It shows that the southern location is the most vulnerable residence with possibility water intrusive as far as 10 meters far from High Water Level (HWL) reference. With an accurate position of the HWL coastline, the development of settlements and coastal areas is expected to be better and safer, especially from the tidal floods.

Development of maritime tourism port valorization sustainable Matahari Terbit Sanur Bali

Tourism is the fastest growing and emerging sector after the Covid-19 pandemic ended. However, there has been no maritime tourism port specifically built in Indonesia, even though Indonesia is known as an archipelagic country and the world's maritime axis. The development of coastal areas (especially the Sunrise Maritime Tourism Port in Sanur, Bali) is very important as a tourist attraction and as a model for other areas that have coastal areas. The concept of integrating maritime education, business centers, tourism with cultural performances and the use of environmentally friendly technology but still in the corridor of maintaining environmental, social and economic sustainability so as to create a superior port. This research uses qualitative research methods, PRISMA and PICOS data analysis techniques. Develop and integrate two theories; sustainable development goals with Systematization of the development to produce the concept of Sustainable Valorization Novelty.

A new strategy for optimizing marine protection networks by considering functional connectivity: An example of Tachypleus tridentatus

The concept of creating a conservation network through the establishment of multiple protected areas to protect marine fauna is gaining momentum. To effectively establish a network that yields favorable outcomes, it is imperative to identify suitable areas that foster optimal connectivity. Given the swift development of coastal areas, it has become necessary to develop cost-effective measures that yield maximum conservation benefits. However, exploration of these ideas for application to marine conservation networks remains scarce. In this study, we used the horseshoe crab (Tachypleus tridentatus) in the Beibu Gulf as an example. The species and environmental data were collected through field sampling and remote sensing. The species distribution model, the least-cost path model, and circuit theory were employed to establish a marine conservation network. The functional connectivity metrics were employed to optimize both the interconnection and economic efficiency of the network. The results indicated a low presence of adult horseshoe crabs in the Beibu Gulf, with average densities of 1.47 and 1.43 ind./km2 among the 38 surveyed stations in 2018 and 2019, respectively. The species distribution model accurately predicted juvenile presence in mudflats and adult presence offshore, and it identified 43 potential areas that are suitable for the establishment of marine protected areas. The marine protected areas that ranked higher in importance contributed significantly to maintaining the integrity of regional connectivity. The network connectivity shows a law of diminishing returns as the number of marine protected areas increases. The framework developed in this study will provide decision support for building and optimizing marine conservation networks.

Delineating expert mangrove stakeholder perceptions and attitudes towards mangrove management in Sri Lanka using Q methodology

Effective decision-making is key to the successful conservation and management of natural resources. Mangrove ecosystems all over the world provide an array of ecosystem goods and services and are managed by a wide range of stakeholders representing various sectors. The position of mangroves in the land-sea interface and the rapid development of coastal areas in the Global South make mangrove conservation and management more challenging than the management of other coastal ecosystems. Sri Lankan mangroves are degrading due to numerous natural and anthropogenic causes in recent years. Mangrove degradation in Sri Lanka is further exacerbated by the economic crisis following the COVID-19 pandemic. The coastal communities near mangroves in Sri Lanka heavily depend on mangrove goods and services (more than before, due to a lack of livelihood alternatives), despite formal “no entry” rules by the government. This study’s objectives are to delineate the viewpoints of mangrove management experts to understand current mangrove management in Sri Lanka and to provide baseline data for effective decision-making. We used Q methodology, during which 71 mangrove experts representing 21 stakeholder groups were asked to individually rank statements regarding mangrove management. These rankings were subsequently clustered using Principal Component Analysis, allowing the identification of clusters of opinions regarding mangrove management. Stakeholder’s perceptions were clustered into three discourses: community-oriented management, government-oriented management, and management in synergy between government and communities for effective mangrove conservation. Our findings emphasize the multifaceted nature of mangrove management in Sri Lanka, revealing diverse perspectives among stakeholders. Our results further highlight the need for a collaborative approach to the co-management of mangroves in Sri Lanka. We recommend that mangroves be co-managed by the government and local communities ensuring environmental sustainability in Sri Lanka and beyond.

Multi-dimensional landscape ecological risk assessment and its drivers in coastal areas

The eastern coastal areas of Japan are threatened by multiple ecological risks due to frequent natural disasters, climate changes, human activities, etc. Identification spatio-temporal variations and driving mechanisms of landscape ecological risk could be used as significant basis for policymakers. In this study, taking the eastern coastal areas of Japan affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster as the study area, the “Nature-Landscape Pattern-Human Society” (NA-LP-HS) multi-dimensional ecological risk assessment framework was established to analyze the spatio-temporal patterns, and identity driving factors using spatial cluster analysis and spatial principal component analysis (SPCA) based on ArcGIS from 2009 to 2021. The findings revealed the distinct geographic patterns in landscape ecological risk, with a noticeable decline from the southwest to the northeast. During the period from 2009 to 2015, the driving factors leading to a sharp risk increase were natural disasters and vegetation coverage. These high-risk areas were concentrated in Sendai Bay and its surroundings. From 2015 to 2021, ecological instability was primarily attributed to a reduction in vegetation coverage, the occurrence of natural disasters, and heightened rainfall erosion. These high-risk areas were mainly clustered within the Tokyo-centered urban agglomeration. Spatial clustering of ecological risks was obvious across all time periods. The key factors contributing to the clustering of high ecological landscape risks focused on the “landscape pattern” criterion, specifically including vegetation coverage, land use land cover. This study demonstrated the ability of multi-dimensional ecological risk assessment to identify high-risk areas and driving factors, and these results could provide a visual analysis and decision-making basis for sustainable development of coastal areas.

Combining Landsat, VIIRS Night-time Light, and Sentinel-1 SAR for Spatial Flood Risk Assessment in Coastal Area: an Earth Engine Cloud Computing Process

The intensity of development in coastal areas stimulates various potential issues such as flood disasters. This study aims to demonstrate the importance of latest methods and geospatial data as inputs for coastal spatial planning policies in efforts to reduce flood disaster risks. Leveraging spatial analysis with cloud computing through Google Earth Engine (GEE), this research assesses flood risk components—hazards, vulnerability, and capacity. The method involves processing SAR Sentinel-1 data to map flood inundation as a representation of hazards, analyzing Landsat and WorldPop data to evaluate vulnerability, and assessing capacity by utilizing VIIRS nighttime light level imagery to determine economic activities. The chosen research study location is the coastal area of Pekalongan due to frequent flood disasters throughout the year. The results demonstrate that cloud computing is capable of assessing flood risks. The flood inundation model using SAR data covers an area of 2,780 hectares with an accuracy of 96.75%. The analysis also reveals the highest vulnerability level, reaching 15.7% (946.32 hectares) of the total area. The capacity analysis indicates a medium to high level of 15% (913.6 hectares). The assessment of flood risks in the coastal area is dominated by the medium to very high-risk class, covering 43% (2,631.84 hectares) of the area. In conclusion, integrating cloud-based flood risk modeling into spatial planning is crucial, considering disaster resilience for sustainable human habitats.

Kajian Pengembangan Pesisir Kota Surabaya dengan Metode SWOT

Surabaya is a coastal area projected to be a strategic area for the sustainable development of coastal areas according to the medium-term development plan for Surabaya 2016-2021. The strategic area of the coastal area functions as a supporter of economic growth and saving the environment to optimize the development of the coastal area, so a study is needed to determine the development of the area. This study was conducted to determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the coastal area of Surabaya. The researcher took a qualitative approach to the analysis and was the necessary case study. Analysis of this activity using the SWOT method. The SWOT analysis results from a comparison of internal and external factors; the analysis is carried out using the IFAS (Internal Factor Analysis Summary) matrix and the EFAS (External Factor Analysis Summary) matrix. Based on the SWOT analysis, it can be shown that the management of the Surabaya City coastal area is by the spatial plans that have been made. However, in reality, it must pay attention to communication and socialization with the community, which is considered not optimal, as well as periodic impact management and environmental maintenance to minimize coastal threats.

A stakeholder analysis for sustainable development of Maritime Village in Semarang coastal community, Indonesia

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the role of stakeholders and their interconnected relationships based on power and interests in realising sustainable development in coastal areas using the Maritime Village program in Tambaklorok, Semarang City, Indonesia as a case study.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGD) with stakeholders, observations, as well as online news, and official government reports, followed by taxonomic analysis.FindingsThe results showed the four categories of stakeholders, namely players, context setters, subjects, and crowd. The Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR), Regional Development Planning Agency (BAPPEDA) of Semarang City, Spatial Planning Agency (DISTARU) of Semarang City, and the Fisheries Office of Semarang City were found to be key players with a role in the success of the program. PT Pelindo (Indonesia Port Corporations) was identified as a context setter with low interests but high power, acting as an accelerator in the development program.Originality/valueThe originality of this study lied in its examination of the power and interests of stakeholders involved in government projects. It was recommended to strengthen coordination among the stakeholders to ensure the success of the program.

Analysis of the Realization of the Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget in Increasing the Development of Coastal Areas in the Kulon Progo Regency Area

Kulon Progo Regency has the potential to improve coastal areas, but because of the impact of evictions on airport construction it has an impact on the lives of pond farmers. The shift in land use causes a shift in people's lives and economic activities. This requires government support in implementing decentralization to improve the quality of coastal area communities and development that can benefit the community and increase regional income. Research Method The type of research used in the research is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The focus of this research is: regional financial planning and implementation, responsibility for responsibility and financial reports, asset management in planning, implementation and supervision of regional assets. Problems become obstacles in financial management and supporting factors. The government provides input to encourage people to take advantage of business opportunities in coastal areas. Government support is very necessary to support social and economic disparities. It is hoped that APBD assistance will be able to help, carry out programs that have been determined by the Forestry and Maritime Service government. The APBD distributed must remain targeted to develop sustainably so that the community can support the economy to meet their daily needs
