Zinc Bioinspired Catalytic System for the Valorization of CO2 Into Cyclic Carbonates

AbstractCyclic organic carbonates are defined as key compounds for a sustainable chemical economy. Their synthesis from CO2 under mild conditions is a useful way to valorise this greenhouse gas as carbon source. Even if a wide range of catalysts were described to promote the carbon dioxide cycloaddition into epoxides, only few ones concern enzymatic systems. The zinc–l‐histidine active site of carbonic anhydrase inspired the present work, pointing out that the imidazole moiety of the amino acid ligand has a crucial role. An extensive study was undertaken to establish the structure–activity relationship of imidazole derivatives, zinc salts, and their respective catalytic activity in the CO2 cycloaddition reaction. The effect of aromatic, alkyl, or iodine substituents and their position in N‐heterocycles were highlighted. A synergic effect was noted when combining imidazole compounds with zinc salts. The optimization of reaction conditions emphasised the in situ ZnI2–1‐methylimidazole catalytic system, which is selective toward cyclic styrene carbonates and efficient under solvent‐free mild conditions (50 °C, atmospheric CO2 pressure). Once reusing tests confirmed the catalytic system robustness, the reaction scope was enlarged to several epoxides resulting in 84%–99% yields of their corresponding cyclic carbonates.

Machine learning-assisted screening of efficient ionic liquids for catalyzing CO2 cycloaddition reaction

The catalysis of CO2 cycloaddition reactions by ionic liquids holds significant promise in addressing environmental and chemical synthesis challenges. However, the design of effective ionic liquid catalysts is hindered by the sheer diversity of cation-anion combinations, leading to challenges in targeted catalyst development. This study addresses these issues by utilizing experimental data collected from literature on reactions involving epoxy compounds as substrates, conducted without solvents or co-catalysts, to establish a database for machine learning (ML). Simple descriptors derived from the ion pair structures of ionic liquids are employed as inputs for five ML classification algorithms to predict the yield of CO2 cycloaddition reactions. Subsequently, the highly accurate ML models are applied to forecast the catalytic performance of 1344 ionic liquids under ambient conditions. This approach identifies 13 cation structures and 8 anion structures that exhibit superior catalytic properties. Further refinement through density functional theory (DFT) calculations selects ion pair structures capable of catalyzing CO2 cycloaddition reactions at ambient temperature and pressure, demonstrating the efficacy of this method in guiding the design and development of ionic liquid catalysts for CO2 conversion reactions involving epoxy compounds.

One-step condensation synthesis of di-tertiary ammonium salt protic ionic liquid for efficiently catalytic CO2 cycloaddition reaction under cocatalyst- and solvent-free conditions

A novel protic ionic liquid di-tertiary ammonium bromide ionic liquid (DTAB-IL) was synthesized by one-step condensation at 0 ℃ with 85 % yield. DTAB-IL also exhibited effective catalytic activity for CO2 cycloaddition without cocatalyst and solvent. The catalytic reaction conditions were optimized to 90 ℃, 4 h, 1 MPa, and the yield of propylene carbonate was obtained 96 % with high selectivity 99 %. Under the optimal conditions, DTAB-IL catalyst exhibited good recyclability and universality to various epoxides. Furthermore, temperature influence and kinetic investigation for propylene carbonate synthesis were studied. The activation energy for DTAB-IL catalyzing CO2 cycloaddition reaction was 43.93 kJ/mol, and the reaction was found to follow first-order for propylene oxide. Efficient cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxide was attributed to the activation of epoxide and CO2 by di-tertiary ammonium and epoxide ring-opening by bromide anion in DTAB-IL.

CO2 Fixation via epoxide cycloaddition with a highly active and stable MOF-808/GO composite catalyst

The CO2 cycloaddition reaction effectively mitigates the greenhouse effect while producing high-value cyclic carbonates. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promise for CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides; however, the aggregation of MOFs due to high surface energy hinders mass transfer and catalytic performance. By pre-coordinating graphene oxide (GO) to regulate the dispersion of MOF-808, the resulting MOF-808/GO-100 composite catalyst exhibits twice the activity of pristine MOF-808, achieving 92.6% conversion of epichlorohydrin (ECH) with 98.2% selectivity to ECH carbonate without adding any co-catalysts. The incorporation of GO introduces numerous hydroxyl groups on the catalyst surface, serving as hydrogen bonding donors. The oxygen-containing groups on GO can compete with ligands for Zr coordination, generating defective Zr sites. The synergistic effect between defective Zr sites and hydrogen bonding donors collectively promotes epoxide opening. Notably, GO correspondingly enhances the dispersion of MOF-808 and induces mesopore formation through its stacking effect at the interface with MOF-808. Across various epoxide cycloaddition reactions, MOF-808/GO-100 consistently demonstrated optimal performance and maintained high stability over multiple reaction cycles.

A MOF@MOF S-scheme Heterojunction with Lewis Acid-Base Sites Synergistically Boosts Cocatalyst-Free CO2 Cycloaddition.

The photocatalytic cycloaddition reaction between CO2 and epoxide is one of the most promising green routes for CO2 utilization, for which high performance photocatalysts are intensely desired. Herein, we have constructed an S-scheme heterojunction of MIL-125@ZIF-67 modified by amino groups, which achieves a cyclic carbonate yield of as high as 99 % without employing any co-catalyst, outperforming the previously reported photocatalysts. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy reveal the important role of photogenerated electron migration from Lewis acid (Co) sites to the O atom of epoxide in triggering its ring-opening (the rate-determining step of CO2 cycloaddition reaction) under the assistance of photogenerated hole. Synergistically and concurrently, the Lewis base (amino groups) sites activate CO2 to CO2*, facilitating the following CO2 cycloaddition. Such a synergistic effect provides a most favorable approach to design efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts with dual/multiple-active sites for CO2 cycloaddition reaction.

Mixed-Linker Zr-Metal-Organic Framework with Improved Lewis Acidic Sites for CO2 Fixation Reaction Catalysis.

Applying the mixed-linker strategy in synthesizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has drawn considerable attention as a heterogeneous catalyst owing to their easy synthesis and different functional ligands in their frameworks. Following this strategy, we have developed a mixed linker Zr(IV)-based MOF, [Zr6O4(OH)4(FUM)n(PZDC-NO2)6-n] (PZDC-NO2 = 4-nitro-3,5-pyrazoledicarboxylic acid, FUM = fumaric acid) denoted as MOF-801(PZDC-NO2) synthesized via this strategy which possess an electron-withdrawing group (-NO2) on secondary linkers. The MOF-801(PZDC-NO2) has been fully characterized via various analyses, such as Fourier transform infrared, powder X-ray diffraction, 13C/1H nuclear magnetic resonance, XPS, TGA, and N2 adsorption/desorption, SEM, EDX, etc. By considering the concurrent existence of acid-base active sites and the synergistic role of these sites, this mixed-linker MOF was used as a catalyst for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides under mild without-solvent conditions. MOF-801(PZDC-NO2) displays significant catalytic performance by producing the highest catalytic conversion of epoxide to cyclic carbonate (93%) with a turnover number of 130.7 in 8 h reaction time and 100 °C temperature under low-pressure CO2 pressure. The mixed-linker Zr-MOF exhibits exceptional stability and reusability, maintaining its structure and functionality after consecutive cycles of utilization. Finally, the reaction mechanism was further investigated by density functional theory calculations. The total energy of the reactants, intermediates, and products involved in the process.

Synthesis and reactivity of Nb/graphene-MCM-48 and Al/graphene-MCM-48 IN CO2 chemical fixation

Mesoporous materials such as the Mobil Composition of Matter (MCM), play a crucial role in the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide (CO2). These materials exhibit a porous structure with intermediate-sized pores, providing a high surface area and a uniform pore distribution. The objective of this study is to synthesize the mesoporous material MCM-48 using the ionic solid chloride of 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium ([C16MI]Cl) as a directing agent and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as a silica precursor and apply this material as a catalyst in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 to propylene oxide to produce propylene carbonate. Compounds such as graphene, aluminum, and niobium are employed in different Si/compound molar ratios (1, 5, and 10) to enhance the material properties. The Nb/Graphene-MCM-48 material with a Si/Nb ratio of 10 demonstrated the best catalytic performance in the CO2 cycloaddition, achieving a yield of 85 % and a selectivity of 99 % for propylene carbonate. The results demonstrate that MCMs are highly efficient in the selective conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonate, offering promising applications for CO2 emission mitigation. This study advances decarbonization and sustainable development, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 15 (Life on Land) by promoting technologies that reduce environmental impact and support sustainable industrial practices.

Rational Assembly of Three-component Coordination Polymers as Heterogeneous Catalysts for CO2 Cycloaddition and Cyanosilylation Reactions.

Four new coordination polymers based on 5-(((1H-imidazol-2-yl)methyl)amino) isophthalic acid (H3L) and auxiliary ligands (1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2'-bipyridine, and 4,4'-bipyridine), namely, {[Zn(HL)(phen)(H2O)]·2H2O}n (CP 1), {[Ni(HL)(phen)(H2O)]}n (CP 2), {[Ni(HL)(2,2'-bpy)(H2O)]·2H2O}n (CP 3) and {[Cd(HL)(4,4'-bpy)0.5(H2O)]·2H2O}n (CP 4) were rationally assembled. Furthermore, these four CPs were screened as heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition and cyanosilylation reactions under mild conditions. The catalytic experiments showed that CP 1 had the better catalytic performance, excellent substrate tolerance and recyclability for the above two reactions. It is speculated that the excellent activity of CP 1 may be due to the open Lewis base site and the Lewis acidic characteristics of the zinc (II) center. After five cycles, the catalytic activities of CP 1 did not significantly decrease, and the structures remained unchanged. Therefore, the CP 1 was considered efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts for above the two reactions.

A Green Chemo-Enzymatic Approach for CO2 Capture and Transformation into Bis(cyclic carbonate) Esters in Solvent-Free Media.

A sustainable approach for CO2 capture and chemo-enzymatic transformation into bis(cyclic carbonate) esters from CO2, glycidol, and organic anhydrides under solvent-free conditions has been demonstrated. The chemo-enzymatic process is based on two consecutive catalytic steps, which can be executed through separated operations or within a one-pot combo system, taking advantage of the synergic effects that emerge from integrating ionic liquid (IL) technologies and biocatalysts. In a first step, lipase-catalyzed transesterification and esterification reactions of different diacyl donors (e.g., glutaric anhydride, succinic anhydride, dimethyl succinate, etc.) with glycidol in solvent-free under mild reaction conditions (70 °C, 6 h) produce the corresponding diglycidyl ester derivatives in up to 41% yield. By a second step, the synthesis of bis(cyclic carbonate) esters was carried out as a result of the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 (from an exhausted gas source, 15% CO2 purity) on these diglycidyl esters, catalyzed by the covalently attached 1-decyl-2-methylimidazolium IL (supported ionic liquid-like phase, SILLP), in solvent-free condition, leading up to 65% yield after 8 h at 45 °C and 1 MPa CO2 pressure. Both key elements of the reaction system (biocatalyst and SILLP) were successfully recovered and reused for at least 5 operational cycles. Finally, different metrics have been applied to assess the greenness of the solvent-free chemo-enzymatic synthesis of bis(cyclic carbonate) esters here reported.

The embedding of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene into hyper-crosslinked ionic polymers for efficient CO2 conversion at atmospheric pressure

The preparation of cyclic carbonates via CO2 cycloaddition reaction was crucial for the lithium industry. Herein, a series of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) based hyper-crosslinked ionic polymers with different ionic site densities were prepared by simultaneously Friedel-Crafts alkylation and quaternization reactions. The obtained P[DBU]DCX(1:1) with a high ionic site density (1.45 mmol g−1), prepared by the equimolar ratio of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene and α,α′-dichloro-p-xylene, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance with a chloropropylene carbonate (CPC) yield of 98.8 % and selectivity of 99.3 % at atmospheric pressure. Meanwhile, the conversion capacity was comparable with other catalysts. Moreover, the CO2 cycloaddition reaction over P[DBU]DCX(1:1) catalyst followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the activation energy (Ea) was obtained to be 28.7 kJ/mol by performing kinetic experiments at different temperatures. In addition, it also had a good reusability and universality for different epoxides. The synergistic effects of abundant quaternary nitrogen cations derived from DBU and chlorine anions on the activation of CO2 and epoxide were explored based on density functional theory calculation. This study offers a new approach for the design and application of hyper-crosslinked ionic polymers for efficient CO2 conversion at atmospheric pressure.

Mesostructured Bifunctional ZnBr2/g‐C3N4 Catalysts Towards Efficient Cocatalyst‐Free Cycloaddition of CO2 to Propylene Carbonate

AbstractCatalytic cycloaddition of CO2 with propylene oxide (PO) is a sustainable pathway for the synthesis of propylene carbonate (PC), and the design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts is a hot research topic in both C1 chemistry and functional materials. In this work, graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) materials were prepared using urea (U) and melamine (M) as precursors through one‐step thermal condensation and then applied as catalyst supports for ZnBr2. As heterogeneous catalysts, the synthesized composites (ZnBr2/g‐C3N4‐MU) exhibited higher activity in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 to PC than ZnBr2/g‐C3N4‐M and ZnBr2/g‐C3N4‐U. The preparation temperature of ZnBr2/g‐C3N4‐MU could affect the distributions of nitrogen species and acidic strength, which thus determined the final catalytic activity. More importantly, the loading of ZnBr2 not only introduced acidic sites but also enhanced the strength of alkaline sites of g‐C3N4‐MU, enabling ZnBr2/g‐C3N4‐MU materials as acid–base bifunctional catalysts in cycloaddition of CO2 with PO.

Triazine- and amino-functionalized poly(ionic liquid) heterogeneous catalyst for efficient CO2 conversion under mild conditions

The efficient conversion of atmospheric CO2 into high value-added chemicals remains a persistent challenge. In this study, a novel strategy for the fabrication of triazine- and amino-functionalized poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) was reported. By virtue of the rich nitrogen species, the newly-developed PILs possessed great potential in CO2 conversion to produce high-value chemicals. The systematic investigation illustrated that rich-nitrogen PILs could promote the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides through the intramolecular synergy of multiple active sites. Excellent conversion and selectivity were achieved under the mild conditions without any co-catalysts and solvents. In addition, PIL heterogeneous catalysts could be easily recovered and reused at least several times without obvious loss in activity. The density functional theory calculation demonstrated that the superior catalytic activity of rich nitrogen PILs was attributed to the synergistic effect of hydrogen bond donor and triazine ring in the catalytic process. Our finding thus presents a versatile platform for fabricating multi-functional heterogeneous catalysts for efficient CO2 conversion.

Influences of hydrogen-bond promoting hydroxyl group on photophysical and catalytic properties of lanthanide pyridine dicarboxylate frameworks

To study the influences of hydrogen bonding interactions on photophysical properties and catalytic activities with insignificant interference from structural disparity, two new isostructural [LnIII2(OH-pda)(ox)2(H2O)4]∙4H2O coordination polymers (LnIII = EuIII (I) and NdIII (IIa), OH–H2pda = 4-hydroxypyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, H2ox = oxalic acid) were synthesized and characterized. They are also isostructural to [NdIII2(pda)(ox)2(H2O)4]∙4H2O (IIb), H2pda = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid) containing pda2− instead of OH-pda2-. The identical framework structure of IIa and IIb with additional hydrogen bonding interactions in IIa due to –OH group of OH-pda2- has been presented. Based on IIa and IIb, the effects of the –OH group on photophysical properties and catalytic activities were then investigated without structural bias. With reference to the UV–vis absorption and phosphorescent emission spectroscopy, the singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) state energies of OH–H2pda (41,600 and 19,200 cm−1), H2pda (48,200 and 23,300 cm−1), OH-pda2- (IIa, 41,400 and 22,500 cm−1) and pda2− (IIb, 47,100 and 23,300 cm−1) were determined from which the influences of the –OH group have been revealed. Important roles of the –OH group as electron-donating group as well as hydrogen bond promoter have been proposed. Catalytic activities of IIa and IIb were comparatively examined using the solvent-free CO2 cycloaddition reaction at atmospheric pressure with epichlorohydrin in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide. The inferior performance of IIa (maximum yield of 62(±2)%) to IIb (maximum yield of 68(±2)%) was unexpectedly disclosed and the drawback of the substantial involvement of the catalytic sites in hydrogen bonding interactions has been demonstrated. Their reusability was additionally explored.

The efficient metal- and halogen-free polymer catalyst for the intensification on CO2 cycloaddition

An environmentally friendly polymer catalyst (PAS) was synthesized via inverse emulsion polymerization using acrylic acid (AA) and 1-vinyl imidazole (VI) as monomers. The excellent catalytic activity of PAS was attributed to the synergistic effects of the carboxyl groups (-COOH) as hydrogen bond donors and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHCs) as electron donor, as well as the swelling properties of the polymer, which can enrich the substrate into the polymer network, increasing the contact between the substrate and active sites. Characterization results from thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) showed that the excessive imidazole addition disrupted the polymer's chain-like structure, significantly reducing its swelling properties. And, the catalytic performance is influenced by both the amount of imidazole in PAS and the swelling properties of the polymer. Finally, the reaction mechanism of the CO2 cycloaddition reaction catalyzed by PAS was proposed and validated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Regulating the N-functional hydrogen bond donors over magnetic nanoparticles supported imidazole tribromide zinc ionic liquid for CO2 cycloaddition

The design of catalysts for the mile production of cyclic carbonates by CO2 cycloaddition is of value. Magnetic polymer nanoparticles-supported imidazole tribromide zinc ionic liquid catalysts, incorporating N-functional hydrogen bond donors (HBD), was successfully accomplished. The correlation between the N-functional HBD and catalytic activity was thoroughly investigated through experimental studies and DFT calculations. The catalyst featuring a secondary amine group (NHM) demonstrated remarkable catalytic performance in CO2 cycloaddition reactions. Under optimized conditions, including 0.12 mol% catalyst dose, 100 °C, and nPO:nCO2 = 1:1.2 for 3 h, a complete conversion was achieved. The exceptional performance of the catalyst was attributed to the multicenter synergistic effect, arising from the appropriate electronegativity, minimal spatial site resistance, a balanced distance between the NHM and imidazolium ion, and the presence of multiple active centers (NHM, Zn2+, and Br−). The integration of a magnetic component enabled swift separation and exceptional recovery stability over 8 consecutive cycles.

Construction on ionic organic polymers by multi-components reactions: Experimental and kinetics modeling of efficient CO2-fixation and high iodine vapor adsorption

A series of ionic polymers (DipyBrn, n = 2, 3, 4) have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions using diaminodibenzo-18-crown-6, 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and the corresponding bromomethyl monomer in one-pot through multi-components reactions. After comprehensive characterization of these ionic polymers by FT-IR, SEM, TGA, 13C CP MAS NMR, XPS, N2 adsorption isotherm, etc., the performance of CO2 fixation reaction and iodine vapor adsorption were deliberated in details. Notably, the DipyBr3 catalyst exhibited the best conversion yield of 97.6% for CO2 fixation at the controlled conditions, and the preliminary kinetic study indicated that the activation energy (Ea) for CO2 cycloaddition reaction catalyzed by DipyBr3 was determined as 70.66 kJ·mol−1. Furthermore, the study of iodine vapor capture showed that DipyBr4 has a high iodine absorption capacity (5171 mg·g−1).

The efficient and reusable imidazolium-organoboron catalysts for green CO2 insertion reactions in solvent-free under atmospheric and high-pressure conditions

Organoboron compounds that are available in industrial and scientific research were investigated as organocatalysts for the coupling reaction of CO2 into cyclic carbonates as fine chemicals in solvent-free and under sustainable green atmospheric and high-pressure conditions (1 atm and 1.6 MPa, 100 °C, 2 h). This work synthesized a series of imidazolium-organoboron catalysts (IBC1-IBC8) using the eco-friendly and metal-free methodology and characterized by various analysis techniques. These techniques were NMR (1H, 13C, and 11B), UV–Vis, FT-IR, Mass spectrometry, C/H/N analysis, and melting point measurement together with thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA-DTA), respectively. After that, the Lewis acidity of the synthesized imidazolium-organoboron catalysts, which is important for catalytic CO2 conversion studies, was investigated by the traditional Gutmann-Beckett test, and the Lewis acidity order of the target compounds was found at range 54.96–50.36 ppm. In the presence of 0.1 mol% imidazolium-organoboron catalyst (IBC8) and 0.2 mol% DMAP as co-catalyst, 4-chloromethyl-1,3-dioxalan-2-one was obtained as cyclic carbonate from epichlorohydrin in 44.9 % yield and 97.6 % selectivity (1 atm and 100 °C) and in an excellent 97 % yield with 98.9 % selectivity (1.6 MPa and 100 °C) in 2 h without any solvents. After the imidazolium-organoboron catalyst (IBC8) showed efficient catalytic conversion and high selectivity, the effect of different parameters, including the effect of substrate, Lewis acid-base, reaction time, reaction temperature, CO2 pressure, and catalyst amount, was studied for this catalyst. According to the obtained catalytic conversion results, it was also determined that the optimum Cat./ECH ratio for CO2 cycloaddition reactions is 1/1000.

Solvent-free CO2 cycloaddition by one- and two-dimensional sodium coordination polymers based on hydrazonic ligands

We successfully synthesized and characterized four new coordination polymers of sodium: sodium 4-hydroxy-3-{[2-(pyridine-4-carbonyl)hydrazinylidene]methyl}benzene-1-sulfonate (NaL4-Py), sodium 3-[(2-benzoylhydrazinylidene)methyl]-4-hydroxybenzene-1-sulfonate (NaLPh), sodium 3-[(2-acetylhydrazinylidene)methyl]-4-hydroxybenzene-1-sulfonate (NaLMe), and sodium 3-[(2-carbamoylhydrazinylidene)methyl]-4-hydroxybenzene-1-sulfonate (NaLNH2). These polymers were synthesized through a 1:1 condensation reaction of hydrazide derivatives with sodium salicylaldehyde-5-sulfonate monohydrate (NaSalSO3) and were thoroughly characterized using various analytical techniques. The compounds NaLMe and NaLPh, crystallized in the P 1‾ and P21/n space groups, respectively, forming one-dimensional polymers. On the other hand, NaLNH2 and NaL4-Py crystallized in the Cmca and P 1‾ space groups, respectively, forming two-dimensional coordination polymers. The coordination environment of the sodium cation differed among the compounds, with the imine nitrogen atom interfering in NaL4-Py and NaLPh. The sulfonate group exhibited various coordination modes, resulting in the different dimensionalities of the polymers. Compounds NaL4-Py and NaLPh acted as heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysts for the solvent-free cycloaddition reaction of epichlorohydrine and CO2 into valued cyclic carbonate. High selective conversion (68 %) of epichlorohydrin to cyclic carbonate was obtained at mild conditions, 60 °C and 1 bar CO2, after 24 h of reaction.

We synthesized a core-shell resin structure with abundant architecture and excellent thermal stability through polymerization. Imidazole ionic liquid with varying carbon chain lengths was immobilized on the surface, resulting in the preparation of metal-free, halogen-free core-shell catalysts with different carbon chain lengths via HCO3- exchange. Characterization using FT-IR, XPS, and various techniques revealed the exceptional performance of our synthetic catalyst in terms of its internal structure. After extensive experimentation, we discovered that the synthesized catalyst exhibits dual functionality for epoxidation and CO2 cycloaddition reactions without requiring solvents or co-catalysts. The epoxidation system demonstrated remarkable conversion rates and selectivity while also exhibiting strong recyclability in heterogeneous reactions, according to kinetic parameters, the reaction order of styrene, TBHP and catalyst during epoxidation is approximately 1, the reference factor for this reaction was calculated to be 6.7×109 (L2·mol−2·min−1), with an activation energy of 48.9 kJ/mol obtained from analyzing reaction rates at different temperatures. In the CO2 cycloaddition reaction, our catalyst exhibited an advantage in catalyzing ring-opening reactions, achieving a conversion rate of 95 % for styrene oxide within six hours along with over 99 % selectivity towards cyclic carbonate formation. It is suggested that the epoxide reaction is carried out in steps, and it is inferred that the catalyst PS-ImC4HCO3 and TBHP are produced into peroxy intermediate active species TBA and HCO4, and the reaction between HCO4- and styrene is the determination step of the total reaction.
