The adsorption of a copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone and allylamine at the silica-solution interface

The conformation of a copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone and allylamine adsorbed at the silica-solution interface has been studied by EPR spectroscopy. Spin labels attached at random along the polymer backbone have allowed the fractions of segments in trains and loops to be measured. The polymer changed from a relatively flattened conformation to a more looped one with increasing surface coverage; the effect on the conformation of changing solvent from pure water to 0–1 N NaCl or chloroform was small. The time for changes between the flattened and looped conformation was less than 2 min and bridging of the polymer molecules between silica particles was demonstrated.

Grafting to Vinylpyrrolidone Polymers and Copolymers by the Ceric lon Method

Abstract Polymers and copolymers of vinylpyrrolidone were investigated as grafting substrates for methyl methacrylate using the ceric ion method. Ceric ion readily initiates methyl methacrylate grafting to commercial poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) of 360,000 nominal molecular weight. The resulting graft copolymer was surprisingly found to be an ABA triblock system with PVP in the center block. This conclusion is supported by three key pieces of evidence: first, selective degradation of the PVP/MMA graft copolymer showed two PMMA grafts per PVP chain: second, blocking of what are apparently hydroxylic or glycolic PVP end groups by reaction with phenyl isocyanate rendered the PVP unreactive to ceric ion grafting; third, if the PVP is prepared by methods which preclude formation of hydroxylic end groups, the PVP is unreactive to ceric ion grafting. Properties of vinylpyrrolidone‐methyl methacrylate statistical copolymer in mixed solvents

AbstractIntrinsic viscosities of fractions of the statistical copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone and methyl methacrylate (composition 42:58 mole percent) have been measured in the cross‐selective solvents, benzene and methanol, in mixtures of these solvents, as well as in chloroform, a solvent for both polymer components, and in mixtures of chloroform with methanol. The dependence of the intrinsic viscosity on the composition of the mixed solvent exhibits a maximum reflecting the destruction of secondary structures that exist in the selective solvents. The temperature dependence of the intrinsic viscosity, which has a maximum around 50‐60°C, has been studied in chlorobenzene between 10° and 100°C. The Mark‐Houwink‐Kuhn constants K and a, which do not change significantly with solvent composition, have been calculated. The values of the parameters Kθ and σ, which depend on solvent composition similarly to the intrinsic viscosity, have also been determined. The results indicate marked changes of macromolecular conformation from the hypercoiled structure in a selective solvent to the random coil in mixed and nonselective solvents.

The copolymerization constants were calculated for vinyl pyrrolidone and allylidene diacetate, and the specific activity and polarity for allylidene diacetate.

Organic reactions on high polymers

AbstractWhen organic high polymer reactions are compared to similar reactions carried out on low molecular weight compunds, some special characteristics become evident, which are directly related with the polymeric structure of the substances.These characteristics may be pointed out either from comparative kinetic measurements, either from the structural organic analysis of the reaction products.From kinetic point of view, a distinction must be made between mono‐and bifunctional reactions. For monofunctional reactions, the similarity of reaction kinetics between a polymeric molecule and its low molecular weight homologous compound is only disturbed if the electrical potential of the mecromolecule increases in the course of the reaction, or (and) if the shape of the molecule changes. Examples are given in the cases of vinyl pyrrolidone copolymers, polymethacrylamide and related polymers.As soon as the reaction becomes itself multifunctional, the differences are very important; intramolecular functional interaction very often become prevalent, and they are necessarily related with the internal structure and tacticity of the polymer molecule. Examples are given on copolymers of (meth)acrylic acid with methyl methacrylate and with acrylamide of different compositions, which confirm and complete some previous data of MORAWETZ. By the use of partially hydrolyzed polymethacrylic esters, the influence of the isotacticity, the syndiotacticity and atacticity has been demonstrated directly.From the organic and structural point of view the functionality of the reaction is also very important; the course of the reaction differ only from that of the low molecular compounds when the reaction is multifunctional. Sometimes interfunctional condensation occurs during the synthesis of the polymer, e.g. in the cases of polymethacrylamide, polyalpha‐chloroacrylic acid or during further transformation reactions of the polymer. Some apparently unexpected results are discussed and further explained. Sometimes the interaction may be concomitant with some chain degradation, as in the case of the FRIEDEL‐CRAFTS reactions applied to polyvinyl derivatives.The influence of the stereochemical composition of the polymeric chain is also illustrated with cyclization reactions on polyacrylic acids of different tacticity depending on their methods of synthesis.Reactions including peroxidic groups which determine the degradation phenomena as well as the grafting possibilities, were intentionally omitted.
