Modelling the cosmological co-evolution of supermassive black holes and galaxies – I. BH scaling relations and the AGN luminosity function

We model the cosmological co-evolution of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes (BHs) within a semi-analytical framework developed on the outputs of the Millennium Simulation. This model, described in detail by Croton et al. and De Lucia and Blaizot, introduces a ‘radio mode’ feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) at the centre of X-ray emitting atmospheres in galaxy groups and clusters. Thanks to this mechanism, the model can simultaneously explain: (i) the low observed mass dropout rate in cooling flows; (ii) the exponential cut-off in the bright end of the galaxy luminosity function and (iii) the bulge-dominated morphologies and old stellar ages of the most massive galaxies in clusters. This paper is the first of a series in which we investigate how well this model can also reproduce the physical properties of BHs and AGN. Here we analyse the scaling relations, the fundamental plane and the mass function of BHs, and compare them with the most recent observational data. Moreover, we extend the semi-analytic model to follow the evolution of the BH mass accretion and its conversion into radiation, and compare the derived AGN bolometric luminosity function with the observed one. While we find for the most part a very good agreement between predicted and observed BH properties, the semi-analytic model underestimates the number density of luminous AGN at high redshifts, independently of the adopted Eddington factor and accretion efficiency. However, an agreement with the observations is possible within the framework of our model, provided it is assumed that the cold gas fraction accreted by BHs at high redshifts is larger than at low redshifts.

Probing the Coevolution of Supermassive Black Holes and Galaxies Using Gravitationally Lensed Quasar Hosts

In the present-day universe, supermassive black hole masses (MBH) appear to be strongly correlated with their galaxy's bulge luminosity, among other properties. In this study, we explore the analogous relationship between MBH, derived using the virial method, and the stellar R-band bulge luminosity (Lr) or stellar bulge mass (M*) at epochs of 1 < z < 4.5 using a sample of 31 gravitationally lensed AGNs and 20 non-lensed AGNs. At redshifts z > 1.7 (10--12 Gyrs ago), we find that the observed MBH--Lr relation is nearly the same (to within ~0.3 mag) as it is today. When the observed Lr are corrected for luminosity evolution, this means that the black holes grew in mass faster than their hosts, with the MBH/M* mass ratio being a factor of > 4(+2)(-1) times larger at z > 1.7 than it is today. By the redshift range 1<z<1.7 (8-10 Gyrs ago), the MBH/M* ratio is at most two times higher than today, but it may be consistent with no evolution. Combining the results, we conclude that the ratio MBH/M* rises with look-back time, although it may saturate at ~6 times the local value. Scenarios in which moderately luminous quasar hosts at z>1.7 were fully formed bulges that passively faded to the present epoch are ruled out.

QSO formation under coevolution of SMBH and bulge

The formation and growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) physically linked with bulges are considered. We focus on the radiation hydrodynamic process for the growth of SMBH in the optically thick starburst phase, where radiation from bulge stars drives the mass accretion on to a galactic center through radiation drag effect. In the present scenario, the AGN luminosity-dominant phase (QSO phase) is preceded by the host luminosity-dominat phase, which is called “proto-QSO phase”. In this phase, there exists the massive dusty disks within younger bulges. Also, the proto-QSO phase is anticipated by an optically-thick ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) phase. Furthermore, such radiation hydrodynamic model has been also applied to disk galaxies. It turns out that the mass of a SMBH primarily correlates with a bulge component even in a disk galaxy. Kinematics of 10 Early‐Type Galaxies fromHubble Space Telescopeand Ground‐based Spectroscopy

We present stellar kinematics for a sample of 10 early-type galaxies observed using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Modular Spectrograph on the MDM Observatory 2.4-m telescope. These observations are a part of an ongoing program to understand the co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. Our spectral ranges include either the calcium triplet absorption lines at 8498, 8542, and 8662 A, or the Mg b absorption at 5175 A. The lines are used to derive line-of-sight velocity distributions (LOSVDs) of the stars using a Maximum Penalized Likelihood method. We use Gauss-Hermite polynomials to parameterize the LOSVDs and find predominant ly negative h4 values (boxy distributions) in the central regions of our galaxies. One galaxy, NGC 4697, has significantly positive central h4 (high tail weight). The majority of galaxies have a central velocity dispersion excess in the STIS kinematics over ground-based velocity dispersions. The galaxies with the strongest rotational su pport, as quantified with vMAX/σST IS, have the smallest dispersion excess at STIS resolution. The best-fitting, general, axisymmetric dynamical models ( described in a companion paper) require black holes in all cases, with masses ranging from 10 6.5 to 10 9.3 M⊙. We replot these updated masses on the Mbh - σ relation, and show that the fit to only these 10 galaxies has a slope consi stent with the fits to larger samples. The greatest outlier is NGC 2778, a dwarf elliptical with relatively poor ly constrained black hole mass. The two best candidates for pseudobulges, NGC 3384 and 7457, do not deviate significa ntly from the established relation between Mbh and σ.
