Indonesia's construction industry has boomed over the past decade, acting as a powerful engine for the nation's economic growth. However, this success story comes with a growing list of challenges. Construction projects are becoming increasingly intricate, demanding not only efficiency and quality but also enhanced safety and a minimized environmental footprint. To tackle these complexities, the industry is undergoing a crucial transformation towards "smart construction." This approach leverages the power of information and communication technology (ICT) throughout the entire project lifecycle, from planning and design to execution and maintenance. By integrating ICT tools like Building Information Modeling (BIM) and cloud-based project management platforms, smart construction streamlines processes, minimizes errors, and optimizes resource allocation, ultimately leading to improved efficiency, enhanced worker safety, and a reduction in environmental impact. A key pillar of smart construction lies in the integration of enterprise architecture (EA) within construction management software. EA provides a structured framework for aligning IT systems with construction businesses' specific goals and objectives. This ensures that software development and management are adaptable to evolving industry needs and foster continuous innovation. This research delves into the application of EA within the construction management software industry, specifically focusing on the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM). By exploring EA through this established framework, the research aims to shed light on how the construction industry in Indonesia can leverage technology to its fullest potential. This will ensure continued growth within the sector and contribute to a lasting positive impact on the nation's economy.

Project Management in the Manufacturing Sector

This study will analyze the role of automation cloud-based project management software in managing and optimizing manufacturing plans and data. The objective is to understand the evolution of automated and cloud-based project management software like Jira and Asana by incorporating beneficial of traditional Gantt charts and work breakdown structures for manufacturing companies. The questionnaire was designed to collect data from 100 project managers employed in various manufacturing units. The data were quantitatively analyzed using both statistical analysis and a test of association. The objective was to understand the factors contributing to the automated and cloud-based project management software, and the challenges faced by the project managers in the incorporation of traditional Gantt charts and work breakdown structures, in the complex and time-consuming tasks associated with project management.

Mass Digitization with Smartsheet: Leveraging a Commercial Solution for Flexible Project Management

The Hoover Institution Library & Archives (HILA) has implemented Smartsheet, a cloud-based project management tool, to manage tasks and cross-team handoffs for its new mass digitization program. By combining task-specific tools such as Capture One and LIMB Processing with the administrative flexibility of Smartsheet, HILA has succeeded in leveraging commercial project management functionality for cultural heritage purposes, resulting in improvements to our program’s efficiency, flexibility, and reporting capabilities.

Request for information frequency and their turnaround time in construction projects

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study the nature of request for information (RFIs) on construction projects by using data analytics to understand the frequency of RFIs, when they occur on projects, and the relationship between project characteristics and frequency of RFIs and between project characteristics and RFI turnaround time.Design/methodology/approachA data-analytic approach using RStudio and Minitab software on 168 construction project cases in Australia and New Zealand involving 1,032,949 correspondences and 53,042 RFI event records made available by Aconex, one of the world largest cloud-based project management platform.FindingsLarge and complex projects tend to have significantly larger number of RFI events per day and longer RFI turnaround when compared with smaller and less complex projects. Projects with fewer users per organisation recorded a higher RFI turnaround time when compared with projects with more users per organisation – users mean persons involved in managing the project using the online platform (an index of project complexity). RFIs occur early on less complex projects and occur later on more complex projects.Research limitations/implicationsBenchmarks of RFI incidences and turnaround time have been developed for various project characteristics and, practitioners can use them to monitor the RFI performance of projects. Organisations need to pay greater attention to staffing levels needed to handle RFIs to reduce RFI turnaround time.Originality/valueA data-analytic study of RFI yielded insights for managing RFIs. The findings of previous studies on RFIs are difficult to generalise because they are based on single project case study. The influence of project characteristics on RFI frequency and RFI turnaround time is not yet known.

Quality metrics in Agile Software Development Projects

Nowadays, IT projects are becoming more complex and larger in scale. Stakeholders often experience difficulties assessing project quality attributes, such as progress, budget. Specifically adapted project metrics based on their descriptive features are beneficial tools for acquiring important information. The paper discusses metrics as an important project quality assessment method. It proposes using GQM method for selecting the most appropriate Agile project quality metrics. For metrics monitoring it explores popular cloud-based project management systems. An illustration of the approach is provided by two case studies with Agile projects in the public sector.

Who's on First?: License Team Workflow Tracking With Trello

The North Carolina State University Libraries license team recently made the decision to migrate workflow tracking from its staff intranet tool, Confluence, to the cloud-based project management software, Trello. Using a model of boards, lists, and cards to allow for the management of projects at various levels of granularity, Trello has proved to be a very valuable addition to the Libraries’ licensing process. This article will review NCSU Libraries’ electronic resources licensing workflow, its transition to Trello, and how this software has streamlined the Libraries’ complex license negotiations.

Impacts of the Implementation of a Project Management Information System – a Case Study of a Small R&D Company

Abstract Background: The problems of resources management (human, financial, time) in multi-project companies are inherently complex and need to be addressed systematically, in both small and large organizations. Furthermore, there is a need for transparent communication and collaboration within the organization as well as with partnering organizations. There are many methodologies and tools supporting project management, which are themselves complex and are therefore not widely adopted, especially among small companies. Objectives: The aim of this paper is to analyse impact of the implementation of a flexible cloud-based project management information system (PMIS) from the human resources, financial management, and collaboration points of view. Method: We have conducted a case study in a small Slovenian research and development company, that has implemented the 4PM PMIS. Results: The findings imply the importance of keeping the balance of the creative processes that are unstructured, rule free and even chaotic, with structured processes monitor and control. Conclusions: The results of the study suggest that the use of “4PM” in support of multi-project management improves human resources and financial management in a collaborative and transparent way when implemented in an open and highly motivated environment

Dynamic subsurface explosive vapor concentrations: Observations and implications

AbstractConventional vapor intrusion characterization efforts can be challenging due to background indoor air constituents, preferential subsurface migration pathways, sampling access, and collection method limitations. While it has been recognized that indoor air concentrations are dynamic, until recently it was assumed by many practitioners that subsurface concentrations did not vary widely over time. Newly developed continuous monitoring platforms have been deployed to monitor subsurface concentrations of methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, total volatile organic constituents, and atmospheric pressure. These systems have been integrated with telemetry, geographical information systems, and geostatistical algorithms for automatically generating two‐ and three‐dimensional contour images and time‐stamped renderings and playback loops of sensor attributes, and multivariate analyses through a cloud‐based project management platform. The objectives at several selected sites included continuous monitoring of vapor concentrations and related physical parameters to understand explosion risks over space and time and to then design a long‐term risk reduction strategy. High‐frequency data collection, processing, and automated visualization have resulted in greater understanding of natural processes, such as dynamic contaminant vapor intrusion risk conditions potentially influenced by localized barometric pumping. For instance, contemporaneous changes in methane, oxygen, and atmospheric pressure values suggest there is interplay and that vapor intrusion risk may not be constant. As a result, conventional single‐event and composite assessment technologies may not be capable of determining worst‐case risk scenarios in all cases, possibly leading to misrepresentation of receptor and explosion risks. While dynamic risk levels have been observed in several initial continuous monitoring applications, questions remain regarding whether these situations represent special cases and how best to determine when continuous monitoring should be required. Results from a selected case study are presented and implications derived. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
