A Novel N-Type Molecular Dopant With a Closed-Shell Electronic Structure Applicable to the Vacuum-Deposition Process.

Rational design, synthesis, and characterization of a new efficient versatile n-type dopant with a closed-shell electronic structure are described. By employing the tetraphenyl-dipyranylidene (DP0) framework with two 7π-electron systems modified with N,N-dimethylamino groups as the strong electron-donating substituent, 2,2',6,6'-tetrakis[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-4,4'-dipyranylidene (DP7), a closed-shell molecule with an extremely high-lying energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital, close to 4.0eV below the vacuum level, is successfully developed. Thanks to its thermal stability, DP7 is applicable to vacuum deposition, which allows utilization of DP7 in bulk doping for the development of n-type organic thermoelectric materials and contact doping for reducing contact resistance in n-type organic field-effect transistors. As vacuum-deposition processable n-type dopants are very limited, DP7 stands out as a useful n-type dopant, particularly for the latter purpose.

Three-Dimensional Fully π-Conjugated Macrocycles: When 3D-Aromatic and When 2D-Aromatic-in-3D?

Several fully π-conjugated macrocycles with puckered or cage-type structures were recently found to exhibit aromatic character according to both experiments and computations. We examine their electronic structures and put them in relation to 3D-aromatic molecules (e.g., closo-boranes) and to 2D-aromatic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Using qualitative theory combined with quantum chemical calculations, we find that the macrocycles explored hitherto should be described as 2D-aromatic with three-dimensional molecular structures (abbr. 2D-aromatic-in-3D) and not as truly 3D-aromatic. 3D-aromatic molecules have highly symmetric structures (or nearly so), leading to (at least) triply degenerate molecular orbitals, and for tetrahedral or octahedral molecules, an aromatic closed-shell electronic structure with 6n + 2 electrons. Conversely, 2D-aromatic-in-3D structures exhibit aromaticity that results from the fulfillment of Hückel’s 4n + 2 rule for each macrocyclic path, yet their π-electron counts are coincidentally 6n + 2 numbers for macrocycles with three tethers of equal lengths. It is notable that 2D-aromatic-in-3D macrocyclic cages can be aromatic with tethers of different lengths, i.e., with π-electron counts different from 6n + 2, and they are related to naphthalene. Finally, we identify tetrahedral and cubic π-conjugated molecules that fulfill the 6n + 2 rule and exhibit significant electron delocalization. Yet, their properties resemble those of analogous compounds with electron counts that differ from 6n + 2. Thus, despite the fact that these molecules show substantial π-electron delocalization, they cannot be classified as true 3D-aromatics.

Synthesis and Characterization of Two Isomers of Th@C82: Th@C2v(9)-C82 and Th@C2(5)-C82.

Actinide endohedral fullerenes have demonstrated remarkably different physicochemical properties compared to their lanthanide analogues. In this work, two novel isomers of Th@C82 were successfully synthesized, isolated, and fully characterized by mass spectrometry, X-ray single crystallography, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The molecular structures of the two isomers were determined unambiguously as Th@C2v(9)-C82 and Th@C2(5)-C82 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Raman and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopies further confirm the assignment of the cage isomers. Electrochemical gaps suggest that both Th@C2v(9)-C82 and Th@C2(5)-C82 possess a stable closed-shell electronic structure. The computational results further confirm that Th@C2v(9)-C82 and Th@C2(5)-C82 exhibit a unique four-electron charge transfer from the metal to the carbon cage and are among the most abundant isomers of Th@C82.

From Centrosymmetry to Noncentrosymmetry: Tailoring the Structural Arrangements of Carbonates with Strong Nonlinear Optical Response through Partial Anion Substitution

AbstractSecond‐harmonic nonlinear‐optical (NLO) crystals with intrinsically noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structures are the core crystalline materials in the modern optics and laser technology. Here, taking as‐grown centrosymmetric NaY(CO3)2 and NCS YOHCO3 crystals as an example, a partial anion substitution strategy in the carbonate system is provided to develop NLO materials with remarkable NLO property for the first time, while the outstanding linear optical properties such as wide bandgap and large birefringence are maintained. Notably, benefiting from the planar π‐conjugated (CO3)2− anions and closed shell electronic structure of Y3+ cations, the YOHCO3 crystal simultaneously manifests a deep UV cutoff (<200 nm), sturdy second‐harmonic‐generation signal (2 × KH2PO4), and gigantic birefringence (0.07 at 1064 nm), enabling phase‐matching in short‐wavelength UV region. In addition, first‐principles calculations are conducted for the in‐depth analysis on the structure–optical property connection.

The adsorption of hydrogen on B36Li2+ 6 and the non-covalent interaction between them

ABSTRACT Boron fullerenes are one type of important hydrogen storage materials, however, their performance should be further improved. Since ions can provide stronger interactions with H and thus better hydrogen storage capabilities, here, we explored the structure, stabilities and hydrogen storage properties of BLi exohedral fullerene by DFT calculations. The results show that BLi possesses thermodynamic, dynamic and chemical stabilities due to its high geometric symmetry and closed-shell electronic structure. Furthermore, eight H can be adsorbed on a Li atom with ideal adsorption energies (−0.0900.201eV) and the mass density of 17.2 wt%. The non-covalent interaction between H and BLi is characterised and identified as Van der Waals type. The energy decomposition further reveals that the induced and electrostatic interactions mainly contribute to the adsorption energies. Our results not only deepen the understanding of non-covalent interaction in physical adsorption but also suggest that BLi is a potential hydrogen storage material.

Catalytic CO Oxidation by O2 Mediated with Single Gold Atom Doped Titanium Oxide Cluster Anions AuTi2 O4-6.

Gas-phase studies on catalytic CO oxidation by O2 mediated with gold-containing heteronuclear metal oxide clusters are vital to obtain the structure-reactivity relationship of supported gold catalysts, while it is challenging to trigger the reactivity of clusters with closed-shell electronic structure in O2 activation. Herein, we identified that CO oxidation by O2 can be catalyzed by the AuTi2 O4-6- clusters, among which AuTi2 O4- with closed-shell electronic structure can effectively activate O2 . The reactions were characterized by mass spectrometry and quantum chemical calculations. Theoretical calculations showed that in the initial stage of O2 activation, the Ti2 O4 moiety in AuTi2 O4- contributes dominantly to activate O2 into superoxide (O2- ⋅) without participation of the Au atom. In subsequent steps, the intimate charge transfer interaction between Au and the Ti2 O4 moiety drives the direct dissociation of the O2- ⋅ unit.

Passivating Nucleobases Bring Charge Transfer Character to Optically Active Transitions in Small Silver Nanoclusters.

DNA-wrapped silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs) are known for their efficient luminescence. However, their emission is highly sensitive to the DNA sequence, the cluster size, and its charge state. To get better insights into photophysics of these hybrid systems, simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) are performed. Our calculations elucidate the effect of the structural conformations, charges, solvent polarity, and passivating bases on optical spectra of DNA-AgNCs containing five and six Ag atoms. It is found that inclusion of water in calculations as a polar solvent media results in stabilization of nonplanar conformations of base-passivated clusters, while their planar conformations are more stable in vacuum, similar to the bare Ag5 and Ag6 clusters. Cytosines and guanines interact with the cluster twice stronger than thymines, due to their larger dipole moments. In addition to the base-cluster interactions, hydrogen bonds between bases notably contribute to the structure stabilization. While the relative intensity, line width, and the energy of absorption peaks are slightly changing depending on the cluster charge, conformations, and base types, the overall spectral shape with five well-resolved bands at 2.5-5.5 eV is consistent for all structures. Independent of the passivating bases and the cluster size and charge, the low energy optical transitions at 2.5-3.5 eV exhibit a metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) character with the main contribution emerging from Ag-core to the bases. Cytosines facilitate the MLCT character to a larger degree comparing to the other bases. However, the doublet transitions in clusters with the open shell electronic structure (Ag5 and Ag6+) result in appearance of additional red-shifted (<2.5 eV) and optically weak band with negligible MLCT character. The passivated clusters with the closed shell electronic structure (Ag5+ and Ag6) exhibit higher optical intensity of their lowest transitions with much higher MLCT contribution, thus having better potential for emission, than their open shell counterparts.

Structures, stabilities and electronic properties of TimSi−n (m = 1‒2, n = 14‒20) clusters: a combined ab initio and experimental study

Titanium-doped silicon clusters anions, TimSi − (m = 1‒2, n = 14‒20), have been investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Low-energy structures of TimSi − clusters have been globally searched using a genetic algorithm combined with DFT calculations. The electronic density of states and vertical detachment energies have been computed at the HSE06/aug-cc-pVDZ level and compared to the experimental data. Excellent agreement is found between theory and experiment especially in case of the singly doped clusters. In general, clusters with size m + n ≤ 17 prefer cage structures, while larger sized clusters evolve on a quasi-fullerene Ti@Si14 structural motif. Natural population analysis reveals that the Ti atoms possess negative charges and thus act as electron acceptors. The calculated binding energies and HOMO–LUMO gaps show that the clusters with cage structures have significantly higher stability, particularly Ti1Si16− and Ti2Si15−. One reason is that neutral Ti2Si15 exhibits a closed-shell electronic structure as a superatom, like Ti1Si16.

Effects of Electronic Structure on Molecular Plasmon Dynamics

Collective, coherent excitations in molecules, termed molecular plasmons, can be observed in neutral and charged polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Systems in this few-atom limit show behavior strongly dependent on charge state, where the addition or removal of even a single electron dramatically alters electronic and optical properties. Here, we investigate the dynamics of PAHs by studying their excited-state lifetimes in four different charge states: cation, neutral, anion, and dianion. Those characterized by a closed-shell electronic structurethe neutral molecule and the dianionexhibit long-lived, exponentially decaying lifetimes typical of radiative relaxation. In contrast, the open-shell cationic and anionic states exhibit far more rapid multiexponential decay dynamics. This can be attributed to the nonradiative de-excitation of multiple electron–hole pairs in the molecule through molecular plasmon “dephasing” and vibrational relaxation. This study gives insight into the nature of excited states of open- and closed-shell molecules and illuminates the role played by electronic structure in the collective electron dynamics of few-atom plasmonic systems.

Structural and electronic properties of exohedrally doped neutral silicon clusters LnSin (n = 5, 10; Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb)

Lanthanide-doped silicon clusters have been extensively studied in the fields of optoelectronics, magnetism and nanomaterials during the last decade. Herein, systematic structure searches for typical neutral clusters of lanthanide-doped silicon clusters LnSin (n = 5, 10; Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb) have been performed by means of density functional theory coupled with the "stochastic kicking" global search technique. It is found that the Ln atom in LnSin prefers to locate on the surface of Sin to form an exohedral structure, and this exohedral configuration may dominate the nascent structure of LnSin. The spin density and Mulliken population analyses indicate that LnSin clusters possess remarkable magnetic moments (except for YbSin), which are mainly supplied by the Ln 4f electrons (except for Yb). Density of states visually shows the significant spin polarization for open-shell structures of SmSin and EuSin. As for the YbSin (n = 5, 10) system, it has a closed-shell electronic structure with a large HOMO-LUMO gap of 2.72 eV. Bonding analysis, including localized orbital locator and electron density difference, shows that the Si-Si covalent interaction and Sm-Si electrostatic interaction are important for the structural stability of LnSin.

Turning On the Near-Infrared Photoluminescence of Erbium Metallofullerenes by Covalent Modification.

The photoluminescence of lanthanide ions inside fullerenes is usually very weak due to the quenching effect of the fullerene cage. In the case of Er@C82, the near-infrared emission from the Er3+ ion is completely quenched by the C82 fullerene cage. It remains challenging to turn on the photoluminescence of Er@C82 and other monometallofullerenes. In this work, we adopt a covalent modification strategy to alter the electronic structure of the fullerene cage for sensitizing the near-infrared emission of Er3+ ions in metallofullerenes Er@C2n (2n = 72, 76, and 82). After covalent modification with trifluoromethyl, phenyl, or dichlorophenyl groups, the erbium metallofullerenes exhibit photoluminescence at 1.5 μm, which is the characteristic emission of the Er3+ ion. Particularly, the otherwise nonfluorescent metallofullerene Er@C82 is transformed into fluorescent derivatives by using this strategy. The photoluminescence from the Er3+ ion is ascribed to energy transfer from the fullerene cage to the Er3+ ion. According to theoretical calculations, the sensitization of the Er3+ ion by the fullerene cage is associated with the large HOMO-LUMO gap and the closed-shell electronic structure of the metallofullerene derivatives. This work provides useful guidance for the design and synthesis of new fluorescent metallofullerenes.

Synthesis and Characterization of π-Extended Triangulene.

The electronic and magnetic properties of nanographenes strongly depend on their size, shape and topology. While many nanographenes present a closed-shell electronic structure, certain molecular topologies may lead to an open-shell structure. Triangular-shaped nanographenes with zigzag edges, which exist as neutral radicals, are of considerable interest both in fundamental science and for future technologies aimed at harnessing their intrinsic high-spin magnetic ground states for spin-based operations and information storage. Their synthesis, however, is extremely challenging owing to the presence of unpaired electrons, which confers them with enhanced reactivity. We report a combined in-solution and on-surface synthesis of π-extended triangulene, a non-Kekulé nanographene with the structural formula C33H15, consisting of ten benzene rings fused in a triangular fashion. The distinctive topology of the molecule entails the presence of three unpaired electrons that couple to form a spin quartet ground state. The structure of individual molecules adsorbed on an inert gold surface is confirmed through ultrahigh-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy. The electronic properties are studied via scanning tunneling spectroscopy, wherein unambiguous spectroscopic signatures of the spin-split singly occupied molecular orbitals are found. Detailed insight into its properties is obtained through tight-binding, density functional and many-body perturbation theory calculations, with the latter providing evidence that π-extended triangulene retains its open-shell quartet ground state on the surface. Our work provides unprecedented access to open-shell nanographenes with high-spin ground states, potentially useful in carbon-based spintronics.

Ab Initio Molecular Orbital Study of the First Four Si/C Alternately Substituted Annulenes.

The ground and low-lying excited states of four alternating Si/C annulenes, H nSi n/2C n/2 with n = 4, 6, 8, and 10, have been investigated by ab initio molecular orbital methods and compared to those of their all-carbon and all-silicon analogues. In the ground state, all of the Si/C-mixed annulenes, except for the largest 10-membered annulene (H10Si5C5), assume equal-bond-length structures by adopting a closed-shell electronic structure in the possible highest symmetry. For the largest H10Si5C5, the trend of the bond delocalization still remains but the circular structure is considerably distorted and nonplanar due to severe angle strain. In the low-lying singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) states, the geometry of the compounds tends to be nonplanar as the excitations produce silyl radical character. Relative energies of the T1 and S1 states of the 6-membered ring, compared to those of the respective ground states (S0), are higher than those of the 4- and 8-membered rings, suggesting a special stability for H6Si3C3. The planar rhombus shape of the formally antiaromatic H4Si2C2 suggests that a synthetic effort is merited. Bonding analyses are given to support the conclusions reached on the basis of geometric structures and excited-state energetics.

Ground-State Copper(III) Stabilized by N-Confused/N-Linked Corroles: Synthesis, Characterization, and Redox Reactivity.

Stable square planar organocopper(III) complexes (CuNCC2, CuNCC4, and CuBN) supported by carbacorrole-based tetradentate macrocyclic ligands with NNNC coordination cores were synthesized, and their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic means including X-ray crystallographic analysis. On the basis of their distinct planar structures, X-ray absorption/photoelectron spectroscopic features, and temperature-independent diamagnetic nature, these organocopper complexes can be preferably considered as novel organocopper(III) species. The remarkable stability of the high-valent Cu(III) states of the complexes stems from the closed-shell electronic structure derived from the peculiar NNNC coordination of the corrole-modified frameworks, which contrasts with the redox-noninnocent radical nature of regular corrole copper(II) complexes with an NNNN core. The proposed structure was supported by DFT (B3LYP) calculations. Furthermore, a π-laminated dimer architecture linked through the inner carbons was obtained from the one-electron oxidation of CuNCC4. We envisage that the precise manipulation of the molecular orbital energies and redox profiles of these organometallic corrole complexes could eventually lead to the isolation of yet unexplored high-valent metal species and the development of their organometallic reactions.

Conformationally Flexible Bis(9‐fluorenylidene)porphyrin Diradicaloids

A stable 5,10-bis(9-fluorenylidene)porphyrin (Por-Fl) diradicaloid was synthesized. It shows a quinoidal, saddle-shaped geometry in the single crystal but can be thermally populated to a triplet diradical both in solution and in the solid state. Coordination with the Ni2+ ion (Por-Fl-Ni) does not significantly change the contorted conformation but reduces the singlet-triplet gap. Heat-induced geometric change can explain the observed paramagnetic properties as well as unusual hysteresis in SQUID measurements. On the other hand, protonation (Por-Fl-2H+ ) dramatically changes the conformation while maintains the closed-shell electronic structure. Our studies demonstrate how heat, coordination, and protonation affect the geometry, diradical character, and physical properties of conformationally flexible open-shell singlet diradicaloids.

Actinide endohedral boron clusters: A closed-shell electronic structure of U@B40

The distinctive electronic bonding properties of actinide-containing clusters have made them the subject of increased attention. Herein, we use density functional theory calculations to examine a unique actinide-encapsulated U@B40 cage structure, revealing that it exhibits a 32-electron (1S21P61D101F14) closed-shell singlet configuration in which all s, p, d, and f shells of the U atom are filled. Furthermore, the binding energy of 8.22 eV calculated for this cluster implies considerable stability, and the simulated infrared and Raman spectra feature U–B40 stretching and pure B40 breathing vibration modes, respectively. These spectral characteristics may aid future experimental investigations. Thus, this work not only describes a new member of the superatomic family, but also provides a method of encapsulating radioactive actinides.

Formation of xenon-nitrogen compounds at high pressure.

Molecular nitrogen exhibits one of the strongest known interatomic bonds, while xenon possesses a closed-shell electronic structure: a direct consequence of which renders both chemically unreactive. Through a series of optical spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction experiments, we demonstrate the formation of a novel van der Waals compound formed from binary Xe-N2 mixtures at pressures as low as 5 GPa. At 300 K and 5 GPa Xe(N2)2-I is synthesised, and if further compressed, undergoes a transition to a tetragonal Xe(N2)2-II phase at 14 GPa; this phase appears to be unexpectedly stable at least up to 180 GPa even after heating to above 2000 K. Raman spectroscopy measurements indicate a distinct weakening of the intramolecular bond of the nitrogen molecule above 60 GPa, while transmission measurements in the visible and mid-infrared regime suggest the metallisation of the compound at ~100 GPa.

A Systematic Investigation on CrCun Clusters with n = 9-16: Noble Gas and Tunable Magnetic Property.

A systematic investigation on structure, dissociation behavior, chemical bonding, and magnetic property of Cr-doped Cun clusters (n = 9-16) is carried out using the mean of density functional theory calculations. It is found that CrCu12 is a crucial size, preferring an icosahedral Cu12 cage with the central Cr dopant. Smaller cluster sizes appear as on the way to form the CrCu12 icosahedron while larger ones are produced by attaching additional Cu atoms to the CrCu12 core. The presence of Cr dopant obviously enhances the stability of CrCun clusters in comparison to that of pure counterparts. Exceptionally stable CrCu12 has an 18-electron closed-shell electronic structure, mimicking a noble gas in the viewpoint of superatom concept. Analysis on cluster electronic structure shows that the interplay between 3d orbitals of Cr and 4s orbitals of Cu has a vital role on the magnetic properties of CrCun clusters.

Dehydrogenation of propylene mediated by CeVO4+: An interesting example for the chemistry of binary Ce–V transition-metal oxide cluster cations

Laser-ablation-generated cerium-vanadium oxide cluster cations CeVO4+ were mass-selected by applying a quadrupole mass filter, and reacted with propylene in a linear ion trap reactor at ambient conditions. Time-of-flight mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations were used to characterize the cluster reactions. The CeVO4+ cluster has a closed-shell electronic structure, and is reactive toward propylene leading to the formation of CeVO3C3H4+/H2O and CeVO4C3H6+. The computed results indicate that this reaction involves the occurrence of spin conversions (singlet→triplet), and a new mechanism of dehydrogenation of alkenes, which is different from the reported ones, was proposed. Compared with another closed-shell cluster V3O7+, possessing the similar mass with CeVO4+, the heteronuclear oxide cluster cations show higher reactivity toward propylene. The computational results are in good agreement with the experimental observations. This work provides insights into nature of active sites and reaction mechanisms in related condensed-phase systems at a molecular level.
