A Qualitative Research on Conflict Experiences of Clinical Dental Hygienists

This study was aimed at exploring the meaning and essence of the conflict experiences of clinical dental hygienists. In-depth interviews with 13 dental hygienists working in a dental clinic were conducted. Giorgi’s method was used for qualitative analysis of the data. Conflict experiences of clinical dental hygienists were categorized into four central meaning as task conflicts, interpersonal conflicts, organizational environment conflicts, and conflict management style. Participants felt more sensitive towards the attitudes of people than treatment itself. Further studies on the multifaceted approach to conflict experiences of dental hygienists should be made. Additional research is necessary to develop effective measures and program to prevent and reduce conflict and stress in the work environment of dental hygienists.

The Relationship among Communication Competence, Organizational Commitment and Job Stress in Dental Hygienists

Objectives: This study was conducted to understand the relationship between organizational commitments, job stress and communication competence in clinical dental hygienists and to provide measures to improve organizational effectiveness of dental clinics. Methods/Analysis: Organizational commitment, job stress and communication competence were investigated by using a self-reported questionnaire in 150 dental hygienists. PASW 18.0 (IBM Co, Armonk, NY, USA) was used for one-way ANOVA, independent t-test and Pearson correlation analysis. Findings: Organizational commitment and communication competence were higher in the twenties than in the thirties and the forties. Job stress was higher in the forties than in the twenties. Organizational commitment was the highest in the group with work experience under three years, and job stress was the highest in the group with work experience over seven years. A correlation between organizational commitment and communication competence was positive and a correlation between communication competence and role ambiguity which is one of sub-factors of job stress was negative. Applications/Improvements: A significant positive correlation was identified between organizational commitment and communication competence. Thus, education courses are required to improve communication competence of dental hygienists. In addition, further studies are needed to investigate a reason of the effect of work experience and age on communication competence and job stress.

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the level of ethical dilemma and related factors in some clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 290 clinical dental hygienists in G metropolitan city from January 5 to February 27, 2015. The instruments used for this study were the modified ethical dilemma scale developed Lee, Kim and Park. The questionnaire consisted of dental hygienists & subjects(4 items), dental hygienists & professionals(12 items), dental hygienists & partners(7 items), and medical information(31 items). The questions were measured by Likert 5 points scale. The statistical analyses include descriptive statistics, t-test and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program. Results: Dental hygienists perceived ethical dilemma scored 3.35 and 3.24 except medical information. Professionals and partners in sub-domain of ethical dilemma by experience of ethics education and ethical conflict were high and showed statistically significant difference. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and subjects was job satisfaction. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and partners was adequacy of ethics education in college/university. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to develop the professional dental hygiene program for the prevention of ethical dilemma in dental hygienists and to make ethics education for ethical decision making.

Objectives: The objective of the study was to investigate the influencing factors of turnover intention in the clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 415 dental hygienists in Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Jeolla, and Kyongsang province from October 1 to December 31, 2014. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS statistics 19.0 with a significance level of 0.05. The study instruments included 9 questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, 7 questions of job related characteristics, 16 questions of job stress, 20 questions of job satisfaction, 10 questions of burnout, 15 questions of organizational commitment, 10 questions of happiness index, and 10 questions of turnover intention measured by Likert 5 point scale. Results: Turnover intention was significantly related with job stress, burnout, and organizational commitment. Conclusions: In order to reduce the turnover intention in the hospital workers, it is very important to manage the human resources through continuous development of the competence and performance activation program.

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examined the demand for the change in Korean dental hygiene curriculum. This study compared the dental hygiene curriculum of domestic and overseas university and tired to provide the basic data for the development of standard curriculum that meets the education policy changes. Methods: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 1,192 participants including dental hygiene professors, dental hygienists and students. Data were collected by mail, telephone call from the professors and research assistants, email, and direct visit from June 10 to August 10, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of 4 questions of general characteristics of the subjects and 13 questions of dental hygiene curriculum. Results: The professors answered the development of integrated dental hygiene curriculum as the first priority(48.9%) and dental hygienists(51.6%) and students(42.6%) chose the development of new dental hygiene curriculum(p<0.001). In the analysis of validity of dental hygiene curriculum, the professors gave 3.29 to the validity of evaluation for basic job performance, and the clinical dental hygienists and the students gave 3.05 and 3.26 points, respectively(p<0.001). In relation to the necessity of the change of the dental hygiene curriculums, the professors gave 4.17 points which implied that curriculum change is the most important and necessary thing to do. The clinical dental hygienists and the students gave 3.90 and 3.47 points, respectively(p<0.001). Conclusions: The above-mentioned findings suggest that the revision of the current Korean dental hygiene curriculums is required. Therefore organizations related to dental hygiene including professor association and Korean Dental Hygienists Association should carefully rebuild the curriculum to improve the competency of dental hygienists. They should take the initiative in the development of a standardized curriculum.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of happiness index in dental hygienists. This study can be used to improve the quality of life and the turnover intention in the dental hygienists. Methods: The subjects were 281 dental hygienists in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Chungcheong province. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by the subjects. The questionnaire consisted of 7 questions of general characteristics of the subjects, 7 questions of dental hygiene performance, and 9 questions of happiness index. The instrument for happiness index was modified from Suh and Koo. Cronbach's alpha was 0.850 in the happiness index measure by Likert 7 scale. The instrument for professionalism was modified from Baek and consisted of 25 questions measure by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.694 in the professionalism. The instrument for turnover intention was modified from Lee and consisted of 5 questions measured by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.712 in turnover intention. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. for one way ANOVA, Duncan posthoc test, Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical regression. Results: The means of happiness index, professionalism and turnover intention of subjects were 4.44, 3.06 and 3.05, respectively. The happiness index was higher in those who are married(4.66), those who have high income, and those who have careers in dental hygienists(4.61). There were significant differences in the happiness index by the average daily working hours, place of treatment, work intensity and off duty hours. Conclusions: This study suggests that improvement of the happiness index in clinical dental hygienists requires the continuing and systematic education program and administrative support that can reduce the turnover intention.

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of humor sense on job satisfaction and turnover intention in clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 277 dental hygienists in Chungnam from May to June, 2014. The instrument for humor sense was adapted from Thorson and Powell instrument by Lee and 20 questions. Each question included humor making and preference for humor and scored by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha in the study was 0.869. Job satisfaction was adapted from Smith Job Description Index and included task requirement, collaborate support, manager support, promotion, and wages and score by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha in the study was 0.827. Turnover intention was developed by Lee and 5 questions was score by Likert 5 scale. Crobach's alpha was 0.712 in the study. Results: The average of humor sense was 3.33, average of job satisfaction was 3.20, and average of turnover intention was 3.05. The sense of humor had a positive effect on turnover intention. Conclusions: This result will provide the high productivity and high quality of life in clinical dental hygienists. Humor sense is the important factor that support the job satisfaction and decrease the turnover intention.

Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between professional vocation and ethical inclination in clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 221 clinical dental hygienist in Busan and Kyeongnam from April 1 to 30, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of structured questions including demographic characteristics(9 questions), vocational calling(9 questions), deontology(12 questions), asceticism(13 questions), and utilitarianism(8 questions). Questionnaire was carried out by Likert scale. Data were analyzed using the statistical package SPSS Window 19.0 for frequency, mean and standard deviation analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and linear regression. Results: There was a significantly positive correlation between professional vocation and ethical inclination. The deontology was associated with education, dental service career, duty hours, and number of clients in multivariate analysis after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics and professional vocation. Asceticism was also correlated with education, and utilitarianism was closely associated with vocational calling, work place, number of clients, and monthly income. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop the curricula including vocational calling and ethical inclination in the dental hygiene education. The dental hygienists should learn the ethical and vocational calling as a professional career.

치과위생사의 회복탄력성과 조직몰입과의 관계

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the resilience and organizational commitment of dental hygienists for the improvement of organizational performance. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 323 dental hygienists from May 2 to June 5, 2014. The collected data were analyzed by a statistical package SPSS WIN 12.0. Results : The dental hygienists had the highest score in relationship(4.09), and had the lowest score in communicative competence(3.29). In organizational commitment, they had the highest score in affective commitment(3.20). There were statistically significant differences in that regard according to age(p<0.001), marital status(p<0.05) and career(p<0.001). The organizational commitment varied significantly with age(p<0.05) and career(p<0.01), and normative commitment significantly varied with the number of work days(p<0.05) and career(p<0.05). There was a significant correlation between the resilience and organizational commitment of the dental hygienists(p<0.001). Conclusions : The organizational commitment of the dental hygienists was better when they had a better resilience, and that resilience made a contribution to the improvement of organizational commitment in the clinical dental hygienists.

According to the correlation results among job satisfaction, personality type and the sense of vocation, a sense of vocation and job satisfaction have a positive correlation while the sense of vocation and neurotic tendency h ave a negative correlation(p<0.01). The results of logistic-regression analysis on the factors infl uencing the sense of vocation are as follows: education attainment(p<0.001), salary(p<0.05), extr oversion(p<0.001) and neurotic tendency(p<0.05). Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between humor and empowerment in clinical dental hygienist. Methods : Subjects were 374 clinical dental hygienist in Jeollabuk-do from April 20 to June 4, 2013. Data were analyzed using the statistical package SPSS WIN 12.0 for frequency, mean and standard deviation analysis, one-way ANOVA and linear regression. Results : The mean score or the clinical dental hygienist of humor was 2.55 out of 4 each of the sub-dimensions including emotional expressiveness, message sensitivity and preference of humor. Empowerment was 3.50 out of 5 and each of the sub-dimensions including meaning, competence, self-determination and impact. There was a significantly positive correlation between the sense of humor and the empowerment. Conclusions : It is necessary to develop the empowerment combined with humor sense in the curricula of dental hygiene education and leadership management in the clinical dental hygienist.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between the professionalism and job satisfaction of clinical dental hygienists. Methods : The subjects were 310 dental hygienists in private and group practiced dental clinics. A self-reported questionnaire was conducted from December, 2012 to February, 2013. Data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 12.0. Results : Dental hygienists revealed the highest score in a sense of calling (3.41) and the lowest score in professionalism (2.85). They showed the highest score in the relationship with dentists (3.56) and the lowest score in pay (2.83). Highly educated and aged dental hygienists wanted to get more clinical career as professionalist. So there was a very significant positive correlation between professionalism and job satisfaction. Conclusions : Dental hygienists showed job satisfaction. Therefore it is important to develop the linking system of professionalsim and human resources development program.
