Integrable systems, symmetries, and quantization

These notes correspond to a mini-course given at the Poisson 2016 conference in Geneva. Starting from classical integrable systems in the sense of Liouville, we explore the notion of non-degenerate singularity and expose recent research in connection with semi-toric systems. The quantum and semiclassical counterpart will also be presented, in the viewpoint of the inverse question: from the quantum mechanical spectrum, can you recover the classical system?

Relativistic elliptic matrix tops and finite Fourier transformations

We consider a family of classical elliptic integrable systems including (relativistic) tops and their matrix extensions of different types. These models can be obtained from the “off-shell” Lax pairs, which do not satisfy the Lax equations in general case but become true Lax pairs under various conditions (reductions). At the level of the off-shell Lax matrix, there is a natural symmetry between the spectral parameter z and relativistic parameter [Formula: see text]. It is generated by the finite Fourier transformation, which we describe in detail. The symmetry allows one to consider z and [Formula: see text] on an equal footing. Depending on the type of integrable reduction, any of the parameters can be chosen to be the spectral one. Then another one is the relativistic deformation parameter. As a by-product, we describe the model of N2 interacting GL(M) matrix tops and/or M2 interacting GL(N) matrix tops depending on a choice of the spectral parameter.

Aperiodically Driven Integrable Systems and Their Emergent Steady States

Does a closed quantum many-body system that is continually driven with a time-dependent Hamiltonian finally reach a steady state? This question has only recently been answered for driving protocols that are periodic in time, where the long time behavior of the local properties synchronize with the drive and can be described by an appropriate periodic ensemble. Here, we explore the consequences of breaking the time-periodic structure of the drive with additional aperiodic noise in a class of integrable systems. We show that the resulting unitary dynamics leads to new emergent steady states in at least two cases. While any typical realization of random noise causes eventual heating to an infinite temperature ensemble for all local properties in spite of the system being integrable, noise which is self-similar in time leads to an entirely different steady state, which we dub as "geometric generalized Gibbs ensemble", that emerges only after an astronomically large time scale. To understand the approach to steady state, we study the temporal behavior of certain coarse-grained quantities in momentum space that fully determine the reduced density matrix for a subsystem with size much smaller than the total system. Such quantities provide a concise description for any drive protocol in integrable systems that are reducible to a free fermion representation.

Multiplicative quiver varieties and generalised Ruijsenaars–Schneider models

We study some classical integrable systems naturally associated with multiplicative quiver varieties for the (extended) cyclic quiver with $m$ vertices. The phase space of our integrable systems is obtained by quasi-Hamiltonian reduction from the space of representations of the quiver. Three families of Poisson-commuting functions are constructed and written explicitly in suitable Darboux coordinates. The case $m=1$ corresponds to the tadpole quiver and the Ruijsenaars-Schneider system and its variants, while for $m>1$ we obtain new integrable systems that generalise the Ruijsenaars-Schneider system. These systems and their quantum versions also appeared recently in the context of supersymmetric gauge theory and cyclotomic DAHAs, as well as in the context of the Macdonald theory.

Asymmetric six-vertex model and the classical Ruijsenaars–Schneider system of particles

We discuss the correspondence between models solved by Bethe ansatz and classical integrable systems of Calogero type. We illustrate the correspondence by the simplest example of the inhomogeneous asymmetric 6-vertex model parametrized by trigonometric (hyperbolic) functions.

Separation of variables in anisotropic models: anisotropic Rabi and elliptic Gaudin model in an external magnetic field

We study the problem of separation of variables for classical integrable Hamiltonian systems governed by non-skew-symmetric non-dynamical -valued elliptic r-matrices with spectral parameters. We consider several examples of such models, and perform separation of variables for classical anisotropic one- and two-spin Gaudin-type models in an external magnetic field, and for Jaynes–Cummings–Dicke-type models without the rotating wave approximation.

Classical integrable many-body systems disconnected with semi-simple Lie algebras

The review of the results in the theory of integrable many-body systems disconnected with semisimple Lie algebras is done. The one-dimensional systems of light Calogero–Sutherland–Moser particles interacting with one particle of infinite mass located at the origin are described in detail. In some cases the exact solutions of the equations of motion are obtained. The general theory of integration of the equations of motion needs the methods of algebraic geometry. The Lax pairs with spectral parameter are constructed for this purpose. The theory still contains many unsolved problems.

Gaussian ensemble for quantum integrable dynamics

We propose a Gaussian ensemble as a description of the long-time dynamics of isolated quantum integrable systems. Our approach extends the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) by incorporating fluctuations of integrals of motion. It is asymptotically exact in the classical limit irrespective of the system size and, under appropriate conditions, in the thermodynamic limit irrespective of the value of Planck’s constant. Moreover, it captures quantum corrections near the classical limit, finite size corrections near the thermodynamic limit, and is valid in the presence of non-local interactions. The Gaussian ensemble bridges the gap between classical integrable systems, where a generalized microcanonical ensemble is exact even for few degrees of freedom, and GGE, which requires thermodynamic limit. We illustrate our results with examples of increasing complexity.

Modified Laplace-Beltrami quantization of natural Hamiltonian systems with quadratic constants of motion

It is natural to investigate if the quantization of integrable or superintegrable classical Hamiltonian systems is still integrable or superintegrable. We study here this problem in the case of natural Hamiltonians with constants of motion quadratic in the momenta. The procedure of quantization here considered transforms the Hamiltonian into the Laplace-Beltrami operator plus a scalar potential. In order to transform the constants of motion into symmetry operators of the quantum Hamiltonian, additional scalar potentials, known as quantum corrections, must be introduced, depending on the Riemannian structure of the manifold. We give here a complete geometric characterization of the quantum corrections necessary for the case considered. In particular, Stäckel systems are studied in detail. Examples in conformally and non-conformally flat manifolds are given.

On the classical and quantum integrability of systems of resonant oscillators

We study in this paper systems of harmonic oscillators with resonant frequencies. For these systems we present general procedures for the construction of sets of functionally independent constants of motion, which can be used for the definition of generalized actionangle variables, in accordance with the general description of degenerate integrable systems which was presented by Nekhoroshev in a seminal paper in 1972. We then apply to these classical integrable systems the procedure of quantization which has been proposed to the author by Nekhoroshev during his last years of activity at Milan University. This procedure is based on the construction of linear operators by means of the symmetrization of the classical constants of motion mentioned above.

Separation of variables in anisotropic models and non-skew-symmetric elliptic r-matrix

We solve a problem of separation of variables for the classical integrable hamiltonian systems possessing Lax matrices satisfying linear Poisson brackets with the non-skew-symmetric, non-dynamical elliptic \(so(3)\otimes so(3)\)-valued classical r-matrix. Using the corresponding Lax matrices, we present a general form of the “separating functions” B(u) and A(u) that generate the coordinates and the momenta of separation for the associated models. We consider several examples and perform the separation of variables for the classical anisotropic Euler’s top, Steklov–Lyapunov model of the motion of anisotropic rigid body in the liquid, two-spin generalized Gaudin model and “spin” generalization of Steklov–Lyapunov model.

Higher-order analogues of the unitarity condition for quantum R-matrices

We prove a family of $n$-th order identities for quantum $R$-matrices of Baxter-Belavin type in fundamental representation. The set of identities includes the unitarity condition as the simplest one ($n=2$). Our study is inspired by the fact that the third order identity provides commutativity of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connections. On the other hand the same identity gives rise to $R$-matrix valued Lax pairs for the classical integrable systems of Calogero type. The latter construction uses interpretation of quantum $R$-matrix as matrix generalization of the Kronecker function. We present a proof of the higher order scalar identities for the Kronecker functions which is then naturally generalized to the $R$-matrix identities.

Algebraic Description of Jacobians Isogeneous to Certain Prym Varieties with Polarization (1,2)

ABSTRACTFor a class of non-hyperelliptic genus 3 curves C which are twofold coverings of elliptic curves E, we give an explicit algebraic description of all birationally nonequivalent genus 2 curves whose Jacobians are degree 2 isogeneous to the Prym varieties associated with such coverings. Our description is based on previous studies of Prym varieties with polarization (1,2) in connection with separation of variables in a series of classical and new algebraic integrable systems linearized on such varieties. We also consider some special cases of the covering C → E, in particular, when the corresponding Prym varieties contain pairs of elliptic curves and the Jacobian of C is isogeneous (but not isomorphic) to the product of three different elliptic curves. Our description is accompanied with explicit algorithms of calculation of periods of the Prym varieties and of absolute invariants of genus 2 curves. They are followed by numerical examples, which experimentally confirm main results of the article.

Quasi-classical expansion of the star-triangle relation and integrable systems on quad-graphs**Dedicated to Professor Rodney Baxter on the occasion of his 75th birthday.

In this paper we give an overview of exactly solved edge-interaction models, where the spins are placed on sites of a planar lattice and interact through edges connecting the sites. We only consider the case of a single spin degree of freedom at each site of the lattice. The Yang–Baxter equation for such models takes a particular simple form called the star-triangle relation. Interestigly all known solutions of this relation can be obtained as particular cases of a single ‘master solution’, which is expressed through the elliptic gamma function and have continuous spins taking values on the circle. We show that in the low-temperature (or quasi-classical) limit these lattice models reproduce classical discrete integrable systems on planar graphs previously obtained and classified by Adler, Bobenko and Suris through the consistency-around-a-cube approach. We also discuss inversion relations, the physicical meaning of Baxter’s rapidity-independent parameter in the star-triangle relations and the invariance of the action of the classical systems under the star-triangle (or cube-flip) transformation of the lattice, which is a direct consequence of Baxter’s Z-invariance in the associated lattice models.

Störmer problem restricted to a spherical surface and the Euler and Lagrange tops

In a recent work, Cortés and Poza (2015 Eur. J. Phys. 36 055009) analysed, in full, the dynamics of a charged particle in the field of a magnetic dipole restricted to a spherical surface with the dipole at its centre. This model can be considered as the classical non-relativistic Störmer problem on a sphere. Here, we started from a Lagrangian approach: we derived the Hamilton equations of motion and observed that in this restricted case the equations can be reduced to quadratures, and they were integrated numerically. From the Hamiltonian function we found, for the polar angle, an equivalent one-dimensional system of a particle in the presence of an effective potential. In the present work we start from a change of variable to the cosine of the polar angle. In terms of this variable we obtain an equation that turns out to be the same as the one of a particle in a quartic potential. Then, we can actually solve the equations of motion for the polar angle using Jacobi elliptic functions, and for the azimuthal angle we use the same integrals which were expressed by Jacobi in terms of theta functions, both in the Euler and Lagrange tops. In this restricted Störmer problem, the student at undergraduate or graduate level will have a good example of an integrable nonlinear physical system in which, after analysis of its complex dynamics, one can obtain an analytical solution by means of some special functions of mathematical physics. Additionally, one discovers that the equations of motion of this restricted case of a charge in a magnetic dipole field have the same mathematical structure as the corresponding equations of other well known integrable classical dynamical systems.

International Conference on Quantum Science and Applications (ICQSA-2016)

This special volume of Journal of Physics: Conference Series is dedicated to the proceedings of “International Conference on Quantum Science and Applications (ICQSA-2016)”. The conference was organized by the Centre for Quantum Research and Applications at Eskisehir Osmangazi University, Eskisehir, Turkey. It was held in Eskisehir Osmangazi University Congress and Culture Centre during May 25-27, 2016 http://icqsa2016.ogu.edu.tr. It gathered actively 143 participants from different disciplines in natural and applied sciences coming from 16 different countries from all over the word. It was the first international conference in its content on the scientific research fields of quantum science and applications in Turkey. It also consisted of 12 plenary lectures and 119 contributed oral presentations covering interdisciplinary fields of research.The ICQSA-2016 conference focused on recent modern theoretical and experimental developments of quantum science in multi-disciplinary aspects of areas of mathematics, physics, statistics, chemistry, biology, computer science, electronics, informatics, medicine, education, etc. It served as an interaction platform for students, researchers, public, and private sector delegates for sharing new scientific and technological ideas on quantum applications in science and technology.The topics of the conference were: Quantum theory and quantum computing, quantum information theory and its applications, quantum statistics and its applications, quantum thermodynamics, quantum cryptography, classical and quantum symmetries, quantum calculus in science, engineering, medicine, education, etc., classical and quantum integrable systems, modeling and numerical methods in quantum systems, other modern mathematical methods in science and technology.Each of the submitted papers for this special volume of the proceedings of ICQSA-2016 has been reviewed by external referees. There are 36 accepted papers. Besides, it is worth pointing out that a great deal of interest shown by the participants of the ICQSA-2016 conference gives hope for the continuation of this meeting in the following years.The conference organization was sponsored by Eskisehir Osmangazi University (ESOGU), Eskisehir Tepebasi Municipality, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) under the project number 113F226. Classical r-matrices of real low-dimensional Jacobi–Lie bialgebras and their Jacobi–Lie groups

In this paper, we obtain the classical [Formula: see text]-matrices of real two- and three-dimensional Jacobi–Lie bialgebras. In this way, we classify all non-isomorphic real two- and three-dimensional coboundary Jacobi–Lie bialgebras and their types (triangular and quasi-triangular). Also, we obtain the generalized Sklyanin bracket formula by use of which, we calculate the Jacobi structures on the related Jacobi–Lie groups. Finally, we present a new method for constructing classical integrable systems using coboundary Jacobi–Lie bialgebras.

Quantum manifestations of Nekhoroshev stability

We uncover quantum manifestations of classical Nekhoroshev theory of resonant dynamics using a simple quantum system of two coupled angular momenta with conserved equal magnitudes which corresponds to a perturbed classical integrable anisochronous Hamiltonian system.

Soliton splitting in quenched classical integrable systems

We take a soliton solution of a classical non-linear integrable equation and quench (suddenly change) its non-linearity parameter. For that we multiply the amplitude or the width of a soliton by a numerical factor η and take the obtained profile as a new initial condition. We find the values of η for which the post-quench solution consists of only a finite number of solitons. The parameters of these solitons are found explicitly. Our approach is based on solving the direct scattering problem analytically. We demonstrate how it works for Korteweg–de Vries, sine-Gordon and non-linear Schrödinger integrable equations.

Boundary conditions for General Relativity on AdS3 and the KdV hierarchy

It is shown that General Relativity with negative cosmological constant in three spacetime dimensions admits a new family of boundary conditions being labeled by a nonnegative integer $k$. Gravitational excitations are then described by "boundary gravitons" that fulfill the equations of the $k$-th element of the KdV hierarchy. In particular, $k=0$ corresponds to the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions so that excitations are described by chiral movers. In the case of $k=1$, the boundary gravitons fulfill the KdV equation and the asymptotic symmetry algebra turns out to be infinite-dimensional, abelian and devoid of central extensions. The latter feature also holds for the remaining cases that describe the hierarchy ($k>1$). Our boundary conditions then provide a gravitational dual of two noninteracting left and right KdV movers, and hence, boundary gravitons possess anisotropic Lifshitz scaling with dynamical exponent $z=2k+1$. Remarkably, despite spacetimes solving the field equations are locally AdS, they possess anisotropic scaling being induced by the choice of boundary conditions. As an application, the entropy of a rotating BTZ black hole is precisely recovered from a suitable generalization of the Cardy formula that is compatible with the anisotropic scaling of the chiral KdV movers at the boundary, in which the energy of AdS spacetime with our boundary conditions depends on $z$ and plays the role of the central charge. The extension of our boundary conditions to the case of higher spin gravity and its link with different classes of integrable systems is also briefly addressed.
