Terrorist Attacks on Mumbai and Role of Pakistan

Today, terrorism has become a global phenomenon. It has been observed that most of the states in the world are affected by terrorist attacks. They have been challenged by the global non state actors and dispersed fanatical terrorist networks that have capacity to wage war internationally. It poses a real threat to the very survival of humanity and is set to deprive humankind of its most highly prized treasure of peace, security and understanding among nations which are the key underpinnings of sustainable progress. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the epicenter of terrorist training camps within the region. In the Indian context, India has been witnessing a threat to her national security from terrorism since the last three – decades. Today many Indian states have become victims of terrorist attacks. Maharashtra’s capital city Mumbai has been targeted eight times since 1993 and every attack have had its own magnitude. These attacks have succeeded to create a huge impact on our society, economy and media too. This paper attempts to find reasons as to why Mumbai the capital city of Maharashtra has been repeatedly attacked by the terrorists.

To Study the Spiritual Intelligence among Post Graduate Students

The purpose of the research was to study the Spiritual Intelligence of Post Graduate Students. For the present study a total sample consisting 120 individual subjects those are Post Graduate Students of Aurangabad city in Maharashtra. There are two groups (60 Pali, Buddhism and Social Science Students and 60 High and Low Economic Status Students) ranging age between 21 to 24 years. The tools used Roqan spiritual Intelligence Test (RSIT) developed by Prof. Roquiya Zainuddin and Ms. Anjum Ahmed. For this studies following statistical techniques were used, Mean, Standard Deviation, t-test. The findings of the study are this study reveals the significant difference between spiritual intelligence of Pali, Buddhism and Social Science students and High and Low economic Status Students.

Nutritional status of under- five children in a city of Maharashtra: a community based study

Background: Children are considered to be the backbone of any nation. Nutritional problems among children cause major morbidity and mortality in India. India is home to the largest number of underweight and stunted children in the world. Aim and objectives: 1) To assess prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting among under-five children 2) To study factors associated with underweight, stunting and wasting among under-five childrenMethods: It was community based descriptive cross sectional study conducted during January 2010 to December 2011 at Urban Health Center of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine catering approximately 27000 populations. 650 under- fives residing in urban field practice area were included in the study with the help of Stratified random sampling technique. Data was analyzed using SPSS software 16 version and OpenEpi Software Version 2.3.Results: 40.46% under five children were stunted, 38.15% were underweight, and 16% were wasted. The difference observed between stunted and normal study subjects with reference to type of family, education of mother, birth weight and birth order were statistically significant. The proportion of under- five children with underweight showed significant association with their age, socioeconomic status, education mother, birth weight and birth order. Proportion of under-five children with SAM and MAM decreased significantly with increase in education status of mother. Significantly higher proportion of under-five children with birth weight less than 2.5 kg and higher birth order were grouped as SAM and MAM.Conclusions: Maternal education, birth weight and birth order of children were significantly associated with all three types of under nutrition i.e. underweight, stunting and wasting. Proportion of children with underweight increases significantly with increase in age and decrease in socioeconomic status. There was no religion wise or gender wise variation in proportion of children with under nutrition was reported among study subjects.

Comparative Evaluation of Awareness among Armed Forces Personnel in Respect of Special Provisions and Benefits Applicable to Children with Disabilities

ABSTRACT Introduction Mental retardation ranges from the borderline to mild to very severe. Fortunately, the majority (80%) are in the mild range that endows the individual the capacity to lead a simple, yet fruitful life once provided with a means that are conducive to their learning styles. Children with a more severe disorder can achieve remarkably if their unique talents are recognized and nurtured to the fullest. Aim We conducted a study among armed forces personnel in a large city in Maharashtra. This community has many peculiar and special features. They are from different ethnic, religious, and linguistic backgrounds and live together as a cohesive unit. The general socioeconomic and educational awareness toward facilities and concessions available for the differently abled children is assumed to be high. Materials and methods Detailed interaction with 27 parents having special children was conducted and further data were collected. Each parent was individually interviewed. This group was named parents having differently abled children (PHDAC). Group discussions consisting of 15 families in one group that had no special children in the family were conducted. A total of such eight groups (120 families) were, thus, interviewed. This group was named parents having normal children (PHNC). Each family was verbally questioned regarding the facilities available to special children thoroughly and responses were recorded. Results and discussion Overall, it was found that among the PHDAC, the awareness was much better, but some were circumspect of the facilities provided for their wards by the land of the law. Most of them felt that the benefits coming to them were due to their service with the Army. The PHNC were not aware of most of the provisions. However, during the interactions with the researcher, they evinced interest in the matter and were happy to know that special provisions are existent in various Government sectors for special children. Detection of Biofilm Forming Bacterial Communities from Urinary Catheter of Patients with Change in Its Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern and Triclosan Effect from Different Hospitals of Amravati City Maharashtra, India

Purpose: Bacterial biofilm develop on the surfaces of urinary catheter and proceed to cause full blown bacterial infections and sepsis. Urinary catheters, infection rates increase with the duration of catheterization at rates of per day with virtually all of those who undergo long-term catheterization becoming infected. Also antibiotics results in the adaptation and development of resistance leading to treatment failure, prolonged hospitalization, increased costs of care, and increased mortality. Methods: In the present study total 200 used urinary catheters were studied from the different hospitals of Amravati city in 2015-2016. Different bacterial uropathogens were isolated by conventional method and biofilm formation was studied by tissue culture plate (TCP). Antibiotic sensitivity was performed by disc diffusion method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Minimum biofilm eradicating concentration (MBEC) of triclosan was determined by TCP. Results: Out of total samples 93% are contaminated. Around 59% urinary catheters contain mixed consortia. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be the strong biofilm forming and multidrug resistant organism. The most effective drug over seven bacteria isolates were chloramphenicol. Triclosan was used to test against the strong and moderate biofilm forming isolates the MIC of triclosan ranged between 1.5 and 1000 μg/ml and MBEC was between 800 and 3200 μg/ml Conclusions: From the study it was concluded that female are more prone to be infected with catheter associated infection. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be deadly caused of infection, as it is highly resistant to antibiotics. Also triclosan showed effective result on the bacterial uropathogens.

Human health risk assessment due to air pollution in 10 urban cities in Maharashtra, India

AbstractThis study assesses human health risk in 10 cities in Maharashtra, India, in terms of mortality and morbidity due to three critical pollutants (i.e. PM10, SO2, and NO2). Risk of mortality/morbidity due to air pollution (Ri-MAP) model adopted in air quality health impact assessment (AirQ) software is used to evaluate the direct health impacts of various critical air pollutants in various cities in Maharashtra during the period 2004–2013. The result shows that excess number of mortality and morbidity in Nagpur, Thane, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, and Chandrapur is in increasing trend, while cities like Mumbai and Solapur are in decreasing trend, and other cities as Pune, Nashik, and Navi-Mumbai are in a steady-state condition. Title of the Paper:Measuring Service Quality of Public Transport Operator in Pune City, Maharashtra India Uses the Critical Incident Technique

This study explores the service quality of public Transporters from user's viewpoints using different techniques such as, the critical incident technique (critical incident technique), e-mail inquiries, and unstructured interviews. The researcher recruited 48 participants, 24 female and 24 male who are the frequent public Transport users. Different participants were asked to report positive and negative incidents or situations in relation to the services provided by their public Transporters mainly considering geographical area of Pune city of Maharashtra, India. This study utilized the conceptual themes of SERVQUAL, a model that has been used by many service industries for evaluating their public services. Data were collected and analyzed from e-mail inquiries and unstructured interviews. Results. Findings revealed that the positive incidents were slightly higher than the negative events. Also women transport users had more positive experiences than men. Further investigations of this study are provided. This study revealed that even though the participants reside in different areas, their positive and negative incidents reveal similar situations. Further research would be expanded to a larger study population and/or compare other public Public transport users outside the Pune. Another possibility could be could be looking the size of the Public transporters and their serving population.

A Cross Cultural Study of Mental Health among Internet Addicted and Non-Internet Addicted: Iranian and Indian Students

<p><strong>INTRODUCTION:</strong> In the background of increasing use of internet in Asian countries, the study of psychological health in internet addicted users seems to be vital and necessary. Therefore the present study aimed to determine mental health among internet addicted and non-internet addicted Iranian and Indian students.</p><p><strong>METHODS:</strong> This cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 students in various colleges from Pune and Mumbai cities of Maharashtra. Internet Addiction Test and Symptom Check List (SCL) 90-R were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16.</p><p><strong>RESULTS:</strong> Internet addicted students were higher on Somatization, Obsessive-compulsive, Interpersonal sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostility, Phobic anxiety, Paranoid ideation, Psychoticism than Non-internet addicted students (P<0.05). Indian students had higher score on mental health domains compared to Iranian students (P<0.05). Female students had higher scores on Somatization, Obsessive-compulsive, Anxiety, Hostility, Phobic anxiety and Psychoticism than male students (P<0.05).</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> Psychiatrists and psychologists who are active in the field of mental hygiene must be aware of mental problems associated with Internet addiction such as depression, anxiety, obsession, hypochondria, paranoia, interpersonal sensitivity, and job and educational dissatisfaction among Internet addicts.</p>

Purification of ambient air by performing Somyag Yajnya

Yajnya is the ritual performed for the purification of the atmosphere through the agency of fire according to the Vedas (Vedic literature). Somyag Yajnya is one of the types of Yajnya, which is a ritual of chanting of mantras derived from the practice in Vedic times accompanied by various offerings. Fumes created by performing Somyag Yajnya, positively affect environmental elements; hence its effects on major air pollutants i.e. oxides of sulphur and nitrogen were studied. Microbial count was also considered during Yajnya. Surrounding air samples were collected from cities in Maharashtra (India) i.e. Beed, Pune and Ratnagiri by using handy air sampler and the effects of Somyag Yajnya were studied by estimating and comparing SOx and NOx levels before Yajnya, during Yajnya and after Yajnya. For microbial count active as well as passive air collection methods were used. As per our results, microbial count significantly reduces up to 95% due to Somyag fumes and SOx levels decreases almost up to 40–90% that of initial levels due to Somyag Yajnya however, the NOx levels increase at the beginning to10-20% that of initial levels but at the end of Yajnya NOx level also found reduced as compared to initial. Hence it seems that by performing Somyag Yajnya air pollution due to SOx, NOx and microbes can be controlled and ambient air can be purified.

Analysis of Land Use/Land Cover Changes Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques in Parbhani City, Maharashtra, India

Land use and land cover is an important factor in understanding the relations of human activities with the environment and thus is necessary to be able to simulate change. The focus of this paper is to map and study the land use and land cover pattern and change among 2002 and 2013 satellite imagery. It also produces a land use land cover maps of Parbhani city in Maharashtra at two epochs in order to detect the changes that take place in the diverse natural resources. After analysis of the image, supervised maximum likelihood algorithm was used to classify the imagery into different land use categories. Five land use classes have been recognized as vegetation, fallow land, barren land, residential area, and water body. The classification of image shows major change in residential areas. The change detection analysis shows that residential area in 2002 is 7.34 % and 14.25 % in 2013, it has been enlarged by 7.11 % similarly change detection for remaining areas has been done. The information on urban growth, land use land cover change study is extremely useful to local government and urban planners for the betterment for future plans of sustainable progress of the city.

Awareness of patients about existing oral precancerous lesions/conditions in Nashik city of Maharashtra

Introduction: Many oral squamous cell carcinomas develop from premalignant lesions/conditions of oral cavity. Hence, the awareness of such lesions/conditions is important. Aim: To assess the awareness about existing oral precancerous lesions/conditions among patients arriving for dental treatment at a dental hospital, in Nashik city of Maharashtra. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire was used to collect information from 80 patients with existing oral precancerous lesions/conditions attending the dental hospital, in Nashik city of Maharashtra. The questionnaire included questions to ascertain information on sociodemographic parameters, awareness, and sources of information about of oral precancerous lesions/conditions, habit of tobacco, areca nut chewing, smoking, alcohol, and combined habits. Results: We found that 40% (n = 32) respondents knew about the existence of lesion in their mouth of which only 50% (out of 40%) had thought that it was precancerous lesion/condition. Among all subjects, only 47.5% (n = 38) were aware of oral precancerous lesions/conditions. Television was the major source of information about oral precancerous lesions/conditions almost all the subjects (97.5%) wanted more information about oral precancerous lesions/conditions but through television (42.5%) and lectures (27.5%). Conclusion: Awareness of patients (coming to hospital) about oral precancerous lesions/conditions was found to be low. The people must be made aware of symptoms, signs, and preventive strategies of oral precancerous lesions/conditions through their preferred media – television and lectures.

Online Buying Behavior of Youth in Pune & Nagpur City: An Empirical Study

In India the shopping has been taking a turning point. The shoppers are finding it convenient to shop online, and the trend is upward. The present paper intends to find the relationship between education and income of consumers and the products they buy. This study is basically based on primary data collected from the youths of Nagpur and Pune cities of Maharashtra. The data is collected through structured questionnaire. In this research descriptive design is used. For the selection of youth convenient sampling is used. The data has been collected from 312 youths of Pune (205) and Nagpur (107). The study was conducted in the month of February to May 2014. For the analysis of data pivot table of MS Excel has been used. The study finds and concludes that the major buyers are highly educated (post graduates). Major shoppers are having lower income groups (less than Rs. 10000 per month).

Experiences from Garbha-Swasthya helpline.

Garbha-Swasthya helpline is a telephone helpline run by a tertiary care private hospital to address issues related to pregnancy and its complications. A review of the helpline data from September 2010 to December 2012 was conducted to study caller characteristics, number of calls and related information, and the reasons to call. Out of the total 696 voice calls, 421 were new callers and 275 were repeat callers and they comprised mainly pregnant women (73.3%), their relatives (24.8%), and medical professionals (1.9%). Most calls were related to first pregnancy and were mainly from Pune and other cities of Maharashtra. All calls by the medical professionals were regarding drug safety in pregnancy. The commonest category of questions (27.4%) was about exposures (drugs, alcohol, eclipse, radiation, etc.) and preexisting medical illness followed by pregnancy complications (18.5%), common medical issues such as nausea/vomiting during pregnancy, and delivery and postpartum period (14% each). Although the total number of calls received has steadily increased, efforts to create public and professional awareness to increase the usage of this helpline are warranted.

An epidemiological study to assess the awareness of hepatitis B infection in the dental students, college staff, practitioners, and auxiliary staff in city of Maharashtra

Introduction: Hepatitis B is a major health problem worldwide and more serious in India. Hepatitis B virus has only human reservoir, and it is easily transmitted to one another. In the field of dentistry, it involves with saliva and blood, and it also involves many accidental injuries. Dentist with their associates are more prone to get infected. Aim: To assess the level of understanding and awareness about hepatitis B infection among the dental undergraduate and postgraduate students, institutional staff of a reputed dental college, dental practitioners, dental auxiliary, and paramedics of a city in Maharashtra. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 350 subjects using a self-administered pretested questionnaire containing 15 questions on awareness about prevention and transmission, vaccination status of hepatitis B, awareness of postexposure prophylaxis (PEP), and complications associated with hepatitis B. Descriptive analysis was carried out and was presented as a percentage. Results: The response rate was 100% (n = 350). Majority of the undergraduate and postgraduate students, college staff, and dental practitioners were aware of hepatitis B infection, its vaccination, and its importance but knowledge and awareness regarding the incubation period, PEP, and complications associated were less. Dental auxiliary staff has the minimal knowledge and awareness about hepatitis B infection. Conclusion: Overall good knowledge and awareness are observed among the undergraduate and postgraduate students, college staff, and in the dental practitioners. The auxiliary and paramedical staffs are minimally aware.

An Exploratory Study to Identify Problems Related to old age and Adaptive Strategies used by Elderly from a Selected Urban Community in a Metropolitan City of Maharashtra

Old age can be broadly characterized by time-altered changes in an individual's biological, psychological and health related capabilities and it's implication for the consequent changes in the individual role in the society. This immediately implies care for an attentive focus on the elderly and the major concern in old age also talks much about abuse. Old age problem has been identified as a major public health problem. Multiple variables are responsible for the problems of elderly in areas of physical, psychological, social and last but not least abuse. The social problem of abuse of older people exist throughout the country but in general we know very little the fact. In elderly problems are prevailing and is also significant but it goes unrecognized, thereby contributing to the development of further problem. This study reviews the prevalence of problems of elderly, with a specific focus on areas like physical, psychological, social, economical problem and abuse. The findings of the study will provide direction to the health care providers to help the elderly by providing adequate knowledge, constant support and reinforcement, based on their needs and problems.

Impact Analysis of SHGs in the Urban Milieu: A Case Study

Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are considered important delivery channels for providing group loans under various poverty alleviation programmes by the government and for spreading various awareness programmes by the non-governmental bodies such as NGOs. In India, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) piloted a microfinance programme in the mid-eighties using self-help groups to alleviate rural poverty. This initiative snowballed into a movement, and the government, non-governmental bodies, and microfinance institutions started using self-help groups for implementing various programmes for the poor. Microfinance is generally perceived as a rural phenomenon in India. This study attempts to examine the socioeconomic impact of microfinancial activities of self-help groups on their members in an urban area - Thane city in Maharashtra. The study uses sample survey data of 340 women respondents belonging to self-help groups supported by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), NGOs, and non-affiliated self-help groups. It indicates that microfinancial activities of self-help groups in the urban milieu lead to desirable socioeconomic impact on members. Findings of this study may have implications for agents in the area of microfinance - the Government, the NGOs, microfinance institutions, banks, consumer goods making companies, and members of the self-help groups.

‘Men Buy, Women Shop’: Gender Priorities Influencing Buying Behavior

This research paper investigates the gender differences between men and women customers from the point of view of buying process. The significance of the subject compels the researcher of this paper to reduce it to some basic and outstanding concepts so as to give an understanding of whether gender plays a discriminating role in shopping behaviour or not. The paper comprises interaction with 250 respondents in Solapur City, which is one among the growing cities in Maharashtra with more than 10 lakh inhabitants. Questionnaire method is used in data collection process and respondents are asked to answer 25 questions, of which 5 are related to demographic factors. The study is consisted of four main parts, of which first part is an introduction to the subject; second part gives theoretical background about male and female customer's buying psychology, new product adoption attitude, attitude towards price and promotions, shopping habits and finally emotional responses. Third part deals with research methodology and data collection, and analysis. Analysis undertaken revealed some significant differences between men and women in terms of brand purchasing behaviour. Fourth part reflects the conclusions drawn from the research study.
