Straipsnyje nagrinėjama Vladimiro (prie Kliazmos) Švč. Mergelės Marijos Rožinio Karalienės bažnyčios pa­rapijiečių grupelės, vadovaujamos klebono t. Sergejaus Zujevo, piligrimystė Lietuvoje arkivyskupo Mečislovo Reinio (1884 02 03 – 1907 06 10 – 1926 04 05 – 1953 11 08) vardo įamžinimo keliais. Pristatomi lietuvių atlikti darbai Vladimire, garsinant M. Reinio vardą, jie tapo svarbia paskata piligrimystei. Straipsnyje apžvelgiama informacijos apie piligrimystę sklaida (spaudoje, per radiją ir pranešimus konferencijose), pasakojama apie Skapiškyje pastatytą rūpintojėlį, aptariami kiti renginiai. Piligrimystė liudija trijų tautų – lietuvių, ukrainiečių ir rusų – atstovų dėmesį M. Reiniui. Viena svarbiausių jungiamųjų grandžių – Skapiškis. Atskleidžiamas ukrai­niečių (dvasininkų bei pasauliečių) domėjimasis Skapiškyje kaupiama su Ukraina susijusia medžiaga, aptaria­ma, kaip puoselėjamas Klementijaus Šeptyckio (1869 11 17 – 1915 08 28 – 1951 05 01) – ukrainiečio, Studitų ordino (graikų apeigų katalikų) archimandrito, 2001 m. paskelbto palamintuoju – atminimas.

“Concern and sympathy in a pyrex bowl”: Cookbooks and Funeral Foods

A Century of Body Snatching: A History of Cadaver‐ Acquisition in Kingston, Ontario from 1820–1920

Practical anatomy has always required bodies for dissection, and, when legal avenues failed to supply cadavers, more illicit practices developed. Scholarly and popular works on body snatching have addressed grave robbing in the United Kingdom and North America. The rise of American medical schools and their reliance on grave robbing have been well‐documented through substantial works by Suzanne Shultz and Michael Sappol, while the Canadian landscape has yet to be researched as thoroughly. This work begins to fill the gap by focussing on grave robbing in late nineteenth‐century Eastern Ontario. Lying between Toronto, and Montreal, and in close proximity to the American border, the area surrounds Kingston's medical school, founded in 1854. Sources include newspapers, pertinent legislation, and archival records of the Medical Faculty and hospital. They identify dozens of local body‐snatching cases with an uneven distribution through time, and they trace the public and medical reactions to grave robbing for anatomical study. Factors included the shortcomings of legal avenues of cadaver‐acquisition, unclaimed remains in the Kingston Penitentiary, and the city's cemetery practices. A more complete view emerges of early Canadian medical life and a reconsideration of the previously‐suggested grave‐robbing landscape in Canada with its North American implications.

Lead isotope ratios: Tracking the migration of European‐Americans to Grafton, Illinois in the 19th century

ABSTRACTLead isotope analysis was conducted using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP‐MS) instruments on local soil samples and human premolar tooth enamel from a 19th century population from Grafton, Illinois, USA. The goal of the study was to determine if lead isotope analysis could be used to infer place of birth and patterns of 19th century migration into the city of Grafton. Five soil core samples from a location near Grafton, Illinois, five grave soil samples from the city cemetery and the tooth enamel of 19 human premolars were analysed. The results of the soil core analysis indicated that the lead isotopic signature of Grafton differs significantly from isotope ratios of other geographic areas associated with recorded places of birth of 19th century Jersey County residents. Elemental and isotope analysis of the soil samples indicated that diagenesis was not a factor in the analysis of lead isotopic signatures of enamel. From the lead isotope analysis of human premolars, the geographic origin of 13 of the remaining 15 individuals could be inferred. The inferred geographic origin was supplemented by an analysis of 1860 mortality and census records and demonstrated the utility of using lead isotope analysis in bio‐archaeological investigations. Discursos da percepção da morte na visão dos familiares: uma abordagem fotoetnográfica

This work is aimed at analyzing the perspectives of the death and dying as expressed by relatives when searching for the simbology to be present in the grave. The research has a qualitative photoethnographic approach. The bibliography allowed for the basis to collect the narratives from the families of people deceased and buried in Umuarama (PR) City Cemetery. The choice of this burial place considered the variety of the graves and the previous contact with relatives.

The Sanctity of the City of ‘Asqalan in the ‘Merits Literature’ of Palestine: An Examination of Mamluk and Ottoman Sources

The purpose of this study is to analyse the sanctity of the Palestine city of ‘Asqalan through manuscript sources from Mamluk and Ottoman times, mainly from a religious and political perspective, in light of the struggle between Muslims and Crusaders. Relevant traditions are often of a local nature, expressing concepts completely at odds with normative Islamic practice and belief. No separate compositions have been compiled about ‘Asqalan, in contrast to Jerusalem and Damascus, for example. Pilgrimage to the city was frowned upon by the Hanbali school of jurisprudence within Sunni Islam, represented by Ibn Taymiyya in the Mamluk period. Relevant traditions deal with war against the infidels, the city's cemetery, the city as gateway to Paradise, and more. For this study I have used the relevant traditions in the genre known as ‘Merits of the Holy Land’, in Arabic from Mamluk and Ottoman times. These traditions reflect the sanctity of ‘Asqalan; some have ancient Islamic roots, and others appeared later. The traditions in question, whenever they were first formulated, show the importance of the city for Muslim writers.

Three long narrow streets are aU that separate us from the city. One side of our town ends at the edge of a city cemetery. I love our town. It used to be an area of garden plots for people living Ui the city. People liked it so much that they began building small houses on the plots. People planted their lives here. The cemetery's caretakers call our town the nut town. One house is an overturned yacht huU on a taU foundation. It looks like a sculpture. Another house uses the shell of a rocket for an antenna tower. We caU the cemetery the ghost town. Some of us walk or bike or take a bus to get somewhere in the city. Some of us own cars and park them on the narrow streets surrounding us. My sister Asia and I don't own a car. Asia bikes to work. When I need to go somewhere she calls the handicap service. I use a wheelchati. The platform lifts on the sides of their vans make me dizzy. I don't Uke leaving our town. Asia is looking over my shoulder at my laptop. She asks me what Tm writing. Tm writing about our town. She asks me who Tm writing to. Tm writing to the world. She says that my writing sounds too stiff and that I should write as if Tm talking. Why should I write as if Tm talking? I can't talk. Asia says don't be a smart-ass. We've just finished eating. She keeps an eye on me at breakfast and supper. I have trouble swallowing. Maryam comes at noon. She's Iranian. She keeps an eye on me at lunch. She's a whiz at cleaning. Asia says thank Godfrey for that. Dad used to say "Thank Godfrey" all the time. He didn't like saying "God." Asia says Dad thought God was a butler or something. Our house is right next to one of the streets surrounding our town. People often walkby and stop to admire our house's wetid turrets. If Tm sitting outby our fence sometimes they'U ask if I Uke tiving here. I whip out my laptop and write that we love living here. When I srrule people don't always know Tm smiting. Sometimes I write a siruley. If I don't feel the energy to smile I don't write a smiley. Life can be this simple if you let it be. More women than men walk by. Some women stroll by pushing baby carriages. Others walk in patis and speak seriously to each other. Neuropathology in the Third Reich. [Memorial to those victims of National-Socialist atrocities in Germany who were used by medical science

In July 1990, the Eberhard‐Karls University of Tübingen held a memorial ceremony on the occasion of the erection of a stone in burial ground X of the City Cemetery, to commemorate those victims of Nazi terror whose bodies were used during the years 1933–1945 for medical research and student teaching. The following is a transcript of the memorial speech given by Jürgen Peiffer, Emeritus Professor of Neuropathology.

John Henry Quinsenberry was born in Gainesville, Texas on June 25, 1907. He died on January 19, 1980, in a Houston, Texas hospital at the age of 72. Funeral services were held in the First Baptist Church, Bryan, Texas with interment in the College Station City Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Pearl Clara Quisenberry, who resides at 1006 Puryear Drive, College Station, Texas 77840; a son Alex Quisenberry of Portland, Texas; a daughter Judy Quisenberry Terry of Richardson, Texas; eight grandchildren; two sisters; and one brother.The Quisenberry family moved to Quanah, Texas in 1909 where John attended public school. An honor graduate, he received his B.S. degree in animal husbandry in 1931 from the A&M College of Texas. That same year, he entered the University of Illinois Graduate College, where he received his M.S. (1933) and Ph.D. (1937) degrees in animal genetics and animal genetics and nutrition, .

A Study of Longevity in McPherson County

This paper is a continuation of a study started by the late Dr. H. J. Harnly of McPherson College some twenty years ago at which time he recorded all marked graves of McPherson County, and from these records tabulated the life span of individuals in ten-year periods until the year 1920. Our study begins with 1920 and continues until the year 1940. Two records have been tabulated, those obtained in the McPherson City cemetery and those from the other cemeteries of the County.
