E-SUS Territory: Race/Color questionnaire on the perception of Community Health Agents in the District of Recife - PE

Filling in the race/color questionnaire involves issues that go beyond objectivity. The objective of this study is to analyze the perceptions of Community Health Agents (CHAs) while filling in the race/color questionnaire when registering families on e-SUS Território in Health District I in the city of Recife, Pernambuco. This is a descriptive stage of an anchoring study, classified as exploratory research with a mixed approach. The study was guided by the categorization of the perception and influencing factors, from the perspective of CHAs, in relation to filling in the race/color questionnaire. The results indicate the importance of including the topic of race in studies, as it guarantees the production of epidemiological information with an intervention effect. However, these results are based on a subjective view of identity and belonging within a social context encapsulated by various types of racism that are beyond the power of CHAs to resolve.

Predictive model for temporomandibular disorder in adolescents: Decision tree.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) do not only occur in adults but also in adolescents, with negative impacts on their development. To propose a predictive model for TMD in adolescents using a decision tree (DT) analysis and to identify groups at high and low risk of developing TMD in the city of Recife, PE, Brazil. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Recife on 1342 schoolchildren of both sexes aged 10-17 years. The analyses were performed using Pearson's chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test, as well as the CHAID algorithm for the construction of the DT. The SPSS statistical program was used. The prevalence of TMD was 33.2%. Statistically significant associations were observed between TMD and sex, depression, self-reported orofacial pain, and orofacial pain on clinical examination. The DT consisted of self-reported orofacial pain, orofacial pain on physical examination, and depression, with an overall predictive power of 73.0%. The proposed tree has a good predictive capacity and permits to identify groups at high risk of developing TMD among adolescents, such as those with self-reported orofacial pain or orofacial pain on examination associated with depression.

The role of internal communication in influencing retailers' views at a shopping center

Corporate internal communication represents a critical success factor in the face of great economic and political instability. For the important economic sector of Brazilian retail, shopping centers are responsible for a large part of total revenue. This success is based on the relationship between the malls and their tenants, who play a role both as a customer and an internal public. In light of the crisis caused by covid19, the relationship between malls and their tenants became a crucial point for the sector's resilience. Thus, this research aimed to analyze the perception of shopkeepers of the internal communication adopted by a large shopping center located in the city of Recife. To achieve the objective, the research used a quantitative approach with an online questionnaire with closed questions for a universe of 407 shopkeepers. Through the use of multivariate statistical analysis, it was possible to analyze the internal communication adopted by the mall in the face of the perception of 370 storeowners. Through the results, it was possible to verify that the relationship between the evaluations made by the tenants, divided between two distinct dimensions, named "organizational identification" and "360º integration", were significant in influencing the tenants in their recommendation of the mall to other entrepreneurs. The results also suggest that good organizational practices, including internal communication integrated with ethical behavior and receptive to feedback, can directly influence the organizational identification of storekeepers with the mall.

A Review of Urban Heat Studies in Recife—PE (Brazil): Urban Heat Scales, Landscape Inequalities and Future Perspectives

The objective of this article is to discuss the main studies related to urban heat in the city of Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco in Brazil, and contribute to providing theoretical and methodological perspectives for future research and the understanding of the history of these studies. Recife is the core of the largest metropolitan region in the northeastern region of Brazil, characterized by a complex urban landscape marked by inequalities and socio-spatial challenges. Moreover, it is recognized as one of the most vulnerable cities to climate change in the world. Analyzing urban heat in Recife through a descriptive review has the potential to provide a comprehensive analysis of the interactions between physical, social, and environmental elements with urban heat in this city, as well as to identify shortcomings and trends in ongoing initiatives and future perspectives. The discussions encompass the following themes: (a) urban heat scales, ranging from macro to global, in both temporal and spatial aspects; (b) the regional and local contexts of urban growth in Recife; (c) the challenges in urban heat studies in the city, including difficulties in data acquisition and integration of approaches; and (d) current efforts and future perspectives in addressing urban heat in this city. The main challenges for future heat studies include developing means for applicability in urban planning, enhancing observations of the interaction with the urban landscape, overcoming the lack of data sources, and understanding the interaction between scales to develop approaches that integrate the social and physical dimensions of urban climate and its relationship with climate change. Such reflections can also be extended to other geographic areas that share similar patterns of urban growth and socio-spatial complexities, helping to enhance the representation of the Global South in this field.

Interdisciplinary experiences between speech therapy and dentistry in the pre and postoperative period for bariatric surgery

The aim of this study was to report the experiences of interdisciplinary care between speech therapy and dentistry, for adult patient’s pre and postoperatively of gastroplasty, in Reference Service for Bariatric Surgery at the Clinics Hospital at the Federal University of Pernambuco, in the city of Recife, northeastern Brazil. This service has a multiprofessional team of health and social assistance professionals, who monitor individuals with obesity and associated comorbidities, mainly Diabetes and Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH), with a view to a comprehensive and humanized treatment, aiming at a better quality of life for this target population. After the beginning of the monitoring by Speech Therapy, there was the request for the opinion and intervention of Dentistry, particularly in the context of the performance of the masticatory function. As of the year 2022, 27 adult patients, aged between 18 and 59 years old received the evaluation, orientations and interventions together, particularly regarding orofacial motricity and oral rehabilitation. In this context, the biggest challenges are related to periodontal disease, with tooth mobility and the loss of many teeth due to caries lesions and to tooth fractures due to clenching and generalized sensitivity

The influence of job accessibility on individual labor income: Evidence for the City of Recife, Brazil

Focused on the city of Recife, the fourth most densely populated state capital in Brazil, this study uses a probit model and precise and unique information about individuals' residential and job locations to estimate the effect of job accessibility on the individual probability of being a low-wage worker. To deal with the potential endogeneity of the job accessibility measure, we consider an instrumental variable based on the historical railways of the city. The results indicate that better job accessibility significantly reduces the chance of being a low-wage worker, and this effect is stronger for individuals using private vehicles than for those using public transport. The evidence indicates that the spatial location of an individual's residence matters for its labor market results and is consistent with the poor functioning of the city's public transport system.

Understanding the land use intensity of residential buildings in Brazil: An ensemble machine learning approach

The verticalization of cities impacts the quality of urban life. The empirical investigation of the determinants of the floor-area ratio (FAR) of lots using the traditional econometric approaches, however, has little explanatory power, and research about it using machine learning (ML) is almost nonexistent. This study applies two ensemble machine learning strategies, random forest (RF) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), to investigate the determinants of the FAR of all formally registered multifamily residential lots in the city of Recife, Brazil. Taking into account a collection of key determinants influencing the floor area ratio (FAR), which encompass structural, accessibility, environmental, amenity, and policy variables, the findings reveal that the ensemble random forest approach significantly enhances the explanatory ability of these determinants when compared to conventional strategies like ordinary least squares (OLS) or locally weighted regression (LWR). Although generally in line with traditional urban economic arguments, the evidence also reveals important non-linearities in the effects of the variables on the FAR that are useful for urban planning and public housing policy.

Child identity‐based activism in Brazil: Wearing Afro‐style hair to contest discrimination, racism and oppression

AbstractIn Brazil, Afro‐descendant children continue to be stigmatised and excluded due to race‐based discriminatory practices and attitudes inherited from colonial times. In order to challenge racism, Brazilian child activists (aged 13–17) instigated a movement encouraging children to wear Afro‐style hair as a symbol of contestation and liberation and to reject hair straightening as a form of domination. Based on empirical qualitative research conducted in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Fortaleza, this article discusses the intersection between children's participation and activism, and the use of Afro‐style hair as a tool of identity activism to restore the right to non‐discrimination on any grounds.

Seroprevalence of Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika at the epicenter of the congenital microcephaly epidemic in Northeast Brazil: A population-based survey.

The four Dengue viruses (DENV) serotypes were re-introduced in Brazil's Northeast region in a couple of decades, between 1980's and 2010's, where the DENV1 was the first detected serotype and DENV4 the latest. Zika (ZIKV) and Chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses were introduced in Recife around 2014 and led to large outbreaks in 2015 and 2016, respectively. However, the true extent of the ZIKV and CHIKV outbreaks, as well as the risk factors associated with exposure to these viruses remain vague. We conducted a stratified multistage household serosurvey among residents aged between 5 and 65 years in the city of Recife, Northeast Brazil, from August 2018 to February 2019. The city neighborhoods were stratified and divided into high, intermediate, and low socioeconomic strata (SES). Previous ZIKV, DENV and CHIKV infections were detected by IgG-based enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Recent ZIKV and CHIKV infections were assessed through IgG3 and IgM ELISA, respectively. Design-adjusted seroprevalence were estimated by age group, sex, and SES. The ZIKV seroprevalence was adjusted to account for the cross-reactivity with dengue. Individual and household-related risk factors were analyzed through regression models to calculate the force of infection. Odds Ratio (OR) were estimated as measure of effect. A total of 2,070 residents' samples were collected and analyzed. The force of viral infection for high SES were lower as compared to low and intermediate SES. DENV seroprevalence was 88.7% (CI95%:87.0-90.4), and ranged from 81.2% (CI95%:76.9-85.6) in the high SES to 90.7% (CI95%:88.3-93.2) in the low SES. The overall adjusted ZIKV seroprevalence was 34.6% (CI95%:20.0-50.9), and ranged from 47.4% (CI95%:31.8-61.5) in the low SES to 23.4% (CI95%:12.2-33.8) in the high SES. The overall CHIKV seroprevalence was 35.7% (CI95%:32.6-38.9), and ranged from 38.6% (CI95%:33.6-43.6) in the low SES to 22.3% (CI95%:15.8-28.8) in the high SES. Surprisingly, ZIKV seroprevalence rapidly increased with age in the low and intermediate SES, while exhibited only a small increase with age in high SES. CHIKV seroprevalence according to age was stable in all SES. The prevalence of serological markers of ZIKV and CHIKV recent infections were 1.5% (CI95%:0.1-3.7) and 3.5% (CI95%:2.7-4.2), respectively. Our results confirmed continued DENV transmission and intense ZIKV and CHIKV transmission during the 2015/2016 epidemics followed by ongoing low-level transmission. The study also highlights that a significant proportion of the population is still susceptible to be infected by ZIKV and CHIKV. The reasons underlying a ceasing of the ZIKV epidemic in 2017/18 and the impact of antibody decay in susceptibility to future DENV and ZIKV infections may be related to the interplay between disease transmission mechanism and actual exposure in the different SES.

Decision making of the endodontic-periodontal interrelation

This present work was aimed at evaluating the clinical knowledge of general practitioners (GPs), attending a specialization course on Endodontics in the cities of Recife - Brazil and João Pessoa - Brazil, as regards the endo-perio lesions, owing to the difficulties, noticed when stablishing their diagnosis and, therefore, when performing the therapeutic decision. On this purpose, a questionnaire with three case-reports, concerned with those lesions, was answered by a sample of 54 GPs. During the interviews, they were inquired on their possible diagnosis and treatment, by means of digitalized radiographies and case decriptions. The results revealed a great range of variation, even higher than what was expected, in reference to the diagnosis and proposed therapies, associated to a low frequency related to the right decision-making. In conclusion, the majority of the interviewed students does not retain the required scientific knowledge towards the studied subject.

Hospital Resilience in Three COVID-19 Referral Hospitals in Brazil

ABSTRACT Health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, challenge health systems in demonstrating resilience—the ability to cope with change, manage challenges, and adapt in order to retain their effectiveness. Understanding how such challenges affect and produce reactions in those involved in this response is extremely important. This study evaluated resilience in three referral hospitals in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil—one public, one private, and one philanthropic hospital—by examining the coping activities adopted by the nursing staff working on the COVID-19 frontline. A multiple case study was carried out, using a qualitative approach, triangulating data from direct observations, document analysis, and interviews with 21 nursing professionals working in management and care provision. Data were collected from April to October 2020. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed based on the resilience categories defined by Blanchet (2017): absorption capacity, adaptive capacity, and transformative capacity. Four themes were considered relevant to the objectives of this study: institutional support, access to personal protective equipment (PPE), work relationships, and fear and mental health. Adaptive capacity was demonstrated concerning the four themes analyzed, absorption capacity was demonstrated in two themes, and no transformative capacity was identified. The study highlighted that the health crisis was challenging for all the hospitals studied, regardless of their legal-administrative status. No differences were observed among them in terms of resilience.

The effectiveness of exploitable zoning in the Boa Viagem neighborhood, in Recife/PE

This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of exploitable zoning in the neighborhood of Boa Viagem, city of Recife/ PE. For this, the information present in the three editions of the Hydrogeological Study of the Metropolitan Region of Recife, known as HIDROREC I, II and III, was used as subsidy, as well as the database of groundwater allocation, provided by APAC. From the analyses performed, an improvement in the level of the Cabo aquifer was obtained in Zone A of Boa Viagem, which may be related to compliance with Resolution CRH no. 04/2003. It can also be concluded that this resolution was being complied with in zone B. Thus, the importance of the exploitable zoning map is highlighted as an important tool for promoting groundwater management and conservation.

Assessment of self-injurious behavior and oral injuries among adolescents in shelter care: a cross-sectional study

ABSTRACT Self-injurious behavior has been defined as an act directed at oneself that results in tissue damage. The aim of this study was to verify the prevalence of self-injurious behavior and the presence of oral lesions among adolescents in foster care. This is a cross-sectional study that was carried out in the shelters of the city of Recife (Brazil), with adolescents between 10 and 17 years of age, of both genders, by census survey. Data were collected through document analysis, application of the questionnaire (FASM), and physical examination, in the second half of 2021. The data were systematized by SPSS software using descriptive and inferential statistics. A total of 81 adolescents participated of the research. The average age of the patients evaluated was 13.65 years and the majority were male. As for clinical characteristics, 75.3% had one or more self-injurious behavior. Of these, the most frequent were: poking wounds 53.1%, biting oneself 40.7%, and cutting the skin 34.6%. The most observed oral lesion was linea alba 14.8%. In the association between self-injurious behavior and oral lesions, trauma and dental wear, age group, gender, shelter care situation and violence no association was recorded (p > 0.05). Self-injurious behavior may have a high occurrence percentage among adolescents in shelter/foster care. However, the adolescents had a low prevalence of changes in the oral cavity that could suggest self-injurious behavior. No association was recorded between the variables studied.

Mobile Devices in Microdrainage Systems in the City of Recife-PE

The catch basins have paramount importance for an urban drainage system, since its main functionality is to capture and control the volume of transported water from the ground to the existing network, until its arrival in rivers and seas. With disorderly urbanization, the volume of produced garbage grows and drainage systems are impaired. In this way, the present work presents some devices created and implanted in the microdrainage group in the city of Recife. Three eco-basket models were installed inside the collection boxes. The initial version, made of cast iron, did not present a good viability due to its mass, with approximately 30 kg. A second HDPE version was then created, showing positive results, however interactions with some external agents (mainly rodents) reduced its useful life. Finally, the third model was built in fiberglass, meeting expectations satisfactorily. The results obtained proved to be convincing, since that after the implantation of a minimum amount of devices, more than a ton of debris were removed, which would obstruct the microdrainage system, and thus, would potentiate the effects of flooding, still associated with diseases of water transmission and the pollution of urban waters.

Effect of a board game on imprisoned women’s knowledge about sexually transmitted infections: a quasi-experimental study

IntroductionBoard games can be used as a playful educational practice in the teaching and learning process, as they constitute an educational technology that can be a source of health knowledge and an aid in decision-making. The objective of this research was to assess the effect of a board game on imprisoned women’s knowledge about STIs.MethodsA quasi-experimental study was conducted in 2022 with 64 imprisoned women who were students at a school located in a prison unit from the city of Recife, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. A 32-item instrument was used to assess knowledge about sexually transmitted infections before, immediately after the intervention and at 15 days. The intervention consisted in applying the Previna board game in a classroom. All the analyses were performed in the Stata software, version 16.0, with a 5% significance level.ResultsThe knowledge mean in the pre-test was 23.62 (± 3.23) points, whereas it rose to 27.93 (± 2,28) in the immediate post-test, dropping to 27.34 (± 2.37) (p < 0.001) in post-test 2, which was performed 15 days after the intervention. There was a statistically significant difference in the means obtained between the pre-test and the immediate post-test (p < 0.001), with a difference of 4.241 points, as well as between the pre-test and post-test 2 (p < 0.001), a difference of 3.846 spots.ConclusionsThe Previna board game significantly increased its players’ knowledge about STIs, and such increase in knowledge remained significant during the follow-up period.

Patterns of anabolic-androgenic steroid use, aesthetic doping, and body imagewithin the male Brazilian bodybuilding culture: an ethnographic approach

The image of overly muscular bodies may appear to those not familiar with thise bodybuilding culture, that muscle is the symbol of masculinity. Much of the time, however, the pursuit of the ideal body, the result of focused discipline to reach the ultimate muscular shape, is often confounded by the concomitant use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS). The purpose of the present study was to investigate how ergogenic aids, in particular AAS, are included within the culture of bodybuilding in relationship to aesthetics, body image, and health risks. Using qualitative data, generated during an ethnographic investigation of the male bodybuilding culture in the city of Recife, Brazil. Including interviews, documentation of events, and field notes. The interviewees consisted of 11 males from the three gyms. In addition, narcissism, and the pattern of AAS use are noted, since they play a significant role in the bodybuilding culture.

Analysis of orocraniofacial changes in children with congenital zika syndrome: a case series

This article aims to describe orocraniofacial alterations in children with Congenital Zika Syndrome. A descriptive case series study was carried out with 20 children with the syndrome, attended at a rehabilitation center in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The presence of oral, craniofacial and neurological alterations, oral health condition and gestational period were evaluated. Data were obtained from medical records and interviews with the children's mothers, followed by a physical examination. Among the main alterations found are microcephaly, craniofacial disproportion, epicanthal folds, bruxism, anterior open bite, ankyloglossia, tongue interposition and delay in teeth eruption. The child may have difficulty reporting any discomfort due to neurological impairment, therefore, these findings reinforce the importance of preventive dental consultations and the performance of the dental surgeon in the elaboration of protocols and guidelines aimed at providing a better quality of life for these patients.

Effects of School Shift Change on Sleep and Academic Performance: A Quasi-Experimental Evaluation for Adolescent Students in Brazil

This paper investigates the influence of the school shift change on the academic performance of 6th and 7th graders (lower secondary education) of public schools in the city of Recife, Brazil. The empirical analyses use educational data from a panel of the Brazilian Ministry of Education, with a sample of 4,500 students, 3,468 parents or guardians, 85 principals, and 137 teachers working in 87 public schools that were spatially distributed. The identification strategy explores a quasi-experiment in which some classes of the investigated sample had their school shifts changed between the two years, which occurred exclusively due to the school logistics and regardless of the parents’ preferences. Difference-in-differences models combined with propensity score matching demonstrate that students who shifted from morning to afternoon between the two years analyzed improved their Portuguese test scores, and that those who experienced the opposite change, from afternoon to morning, had a drop in the performance. Estimations in intermediary outcomes also reveal that the changes in the students’ sleeping habits are an important mechanism that explains the relation between the scores and the school shift.

Burden in caregivers of children with congenital Zika syndrome in Pernambuco, Brazil: analysis and application of the Zarit burden interview scale.

This study aimed to analyze the burden on caregivers of children with congenital Zika syndrome associated with viral infections in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil using the Zarit Burden interview scale. A quantitative study was conducted at the Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital, Recife City, State of Pernambuco, Brazil. By convenience sampling, 56 mothers, two grandmothers, and two caregivers were enrolled, all are female. Data were collected from July 2019 to January 2020. In the analysis, the percentage frequencies were calculated. The normality was identified using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and participant profiles were compared using Student's t-test and analysis of variance. In descriptive statistics, quantitative variables are described by the median and interquartile range and categorical variables by proportions using the Chi-square test. In the comparative analysis, all factors evaluated were significant, except for the "gestational period in which the disease occurred" (p<0.111). The significance of differences in all activities was evaluated. In the mean comparison test, only the factor "has a job" was significant (p<0.043). When comparing the average of caregivers' responses to the categories of the Zarit burden interview scale, the highest level of burden was regarding the feeling that the child is dependent on the caregiver (3.62 points). Caregiver burden was classified as absence, light, moderate, and high. The consequences of contracting the Zika virus in the first trimester of pregnancy, lack of paid work, financial scarcity, full-time dedication to the child, and lack of time for themselves increase the burden on caregivers. Thus, caregivers have mild burden.
