Web-Based Citation Management Compared to EndNote: Options for Medical Sciences

ABSTRACT The authors of this article analyzed the differences in output when searching MEDLINE direct and MEDLINE via citation management software, EndNote X1®, EndNote Web®, and RefWorks©. Several searches were performed on Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed directly. These searches were compared against the same searches conducted in Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed using the search features in EndNote X1, EndNote Web, and RefWorks. Findings indicated that for in-depth research users, should search the databases directly rather than through the citation management software interface. The search results indicated it would be appropriate to search databases via citation management software for citation verification tasks and for cursory keyword searching.

EndNote® and Reference Manager® Citation Formats Compared to “Instructions to Authors” in Top Medical Journals

The study compared citation format in EndNote® version 7 and Reference Manager® version 11 with the citation format for references found in the instructions to authors from the most significant medical literature. The resulting information should be very useful to those who depend on citation management software to format and organize their references for publication in medicine, and librarians and others who teach the use of citation management software.

The Impact of Electronic Bibliographic Databases and Electronic Journal Articles on the Scholar's Information-Seeking Behavior and Personal Collection of “Reprints”

SUMMARY This article examines the potential changes to the information-seeking behavior of scholars and how they manage their own collection of research article “reprints.” With bibliographic databases and electronic journals provided by academic libraries now available at the science scholars' computer desktops, they can now locate and acquire a portion of needed research articles on their own at any time. They also, in some cases, have older paper copies scanned and delivered by libraries as image files at Web retrieval locations. Bibliographic citation management software is now in use by many scholars. Personal information management software is available and could also be used. This article reviews possible scenarios scholars can use to manage this new electronic collection of research articles and possible ways libraries can help them in this scholarly activity.

Retrieval Comparison of EndNote to Search MEDLINE (Ovid and PubMed) versus Searching Them Directly

Using EndNote version 7.0, the authors tested the search capabilities of the EndNote search engine for retrieving citations from MEDLINE for importation into EndNote, a citation management software package. Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed were selected for the comparison. Several searches were performed on Ovid MEDLINE and PubMed using EndNote as the search engine, and the same searches were run on both Ovid and PubMed directly. Findings indicate that it is preferable to search MEDLINE directly rather than using EndNote. The publishers of EndNote do warn its users about the limitations of their product as a search engine when searching external databases. In this article, the limitations of EndNote as a search engine for searching MEDLINE were explored as related to MeSH, non-MeSH, citation verification, and author searching.

Citation Managers and Citing-Cited Data.

There is an increasing trend for library resources to enable identification of cited and citing reference lists, i.e., lists of items cited by documents, as well as items that in turn cite those documents. In this article, we evaluate how two citation managers, EndNote and RefWorks, provide ways to store, display, and retrieve these lists. Then, we suggest enhancements with respect to cited and citing reference data that should be adopted by any citation management software that currently lacks them. Finally, we discuss how publishers can also do more to facilitate use of citation managers with respect to these types of data.

We detail the experiences of librarians in implementing campus-wide use of EndNote, a citation management software package and describe a variety of approaches that librarians at other institutions may wish to employ. Librarian effort in promotion and support of EndNote is a rewarding way to enhance the library's presence on campus because of the close interaction with faculty and graduate students.

Bibliographic Citation Management Software for Web Applications

SUMMARY The bibliographic citation management software librarians already use to support scholarly research can also be used to deliver databases to the Web. Scott Memorial Library at Thomas Jefferson University uses a combination of Reference Manager and Reference Web Poster to publish indexes to bibliographic literature, and searchable lists of electronic journals and frequently asked questions (FAQs). This approach to serving data is suitable for materials of a bibliographic nature and/or for low budgets. To get started, all that is required is a copy of a citation management program, such as Reference Manager, EndNote, ProCite or Biblioscape. Any of these will produce static pages coded in HTML. Optional additional packages (Reference Web Poster or BiblioWeb Server) provide interactive Web-based searching.

Citation management software

Reports on physics research have never been so numerous. This is due to a variety of factors including electronic “e-print” servers, the ever-increasing size of journals, the proliferation of specialist conferences and, of course, the financial implications of not maintaining a visibly active research programme. The sheer volume of this information therefore makes it difficult for physicists to employ the literature in its traditional role – as a means of sharing new ideas and methodologies.
