An energy efficient way for quantitative magnetization switching

Recent advancements in electrically controlled spin devices have been made possible through the use of multiferroic systems comprising ferroelectric (FE) and ferromagnetic (FM) materials. This progress provides a promising avenue for developing energy-efficient devices that allow for electrically controlled magnetization switching. In this study, we fabricated spin orbit torque (SOT) devices using multiferroic composites and examined the angular dependence of SOT effects on localized in-plane strain induced by an out-of-plane electric field applied to the piezoelectric substrate. The induced strain precisely modulates magnetization switching via the SOT effect in multiferroic heterostructures, which also exhibit remarkable capability to modulate strain along different orientations – a feature with great potential for future applications in logic device arrays. To investigate the influence of electric fields on magnetization switching, harmonic Hall measurements, synchrotron-powered x-ray magnetic circular dichroism-photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic force microscopy (MFM), and micromagnetic simulation were conducted. The results demonstrate that electric-field-induced strain enables precise control of SOT-induced magnetization switching with significantly reduced energy consumption, making it highly suitable for next-generation spin logic devices.

Determination of optimal experimental conditions for accurate 3D reconstruction of the magnetization vector via XMCD-PEEM.

This work presents a detailed analysis of the performance of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) as a tool for vector reconstruction of magnetization. For this, 360° domain wall ring structures which form in a synthetic antiferromagnet are chosen as the model to conduct the quantitative analysis. An assessment is made of how the quality of the results is affected depending on the number of projections that are involved in the reconstruction process, as well as their angular distribution. For this a self-consistent error metric is developed which allows an estimation of the optimum azimuthal rotation angular range and number of projections. This work thus proposes XMCD-PEEM as a powerful tool for vector imaging of complex 3D magnetic structures.

Observation and formation mechanism of 360° domain wall rings in synthetic anti-ferromagnets with interlayer chiral interactions

The interlayer Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (IL-DMI) chirally couples spins in different ferromagnetic layers of multilayer heterostructures. So far, samples with IL-DMI have been investigated utilizing magnetometry and magnetotransport techniques, where the interaction manifests as a tunable chiral exchange bias field. Here, we investigate the nanoscale configuration of the magnetization vector in a synthetic anti-ferromagnet (SAF) with IL-DMI, after applying demagnetizing field sequences. We add different global magnetic field offsets to the demagnetizing sequence in order to investigate the states that form when the IL-DMI exchange bias field is fully or partially compensated. For magnetic imaging and vector reconstruction of the remanent magnetic states, we utilize x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy, evidencing the formation of 360° domain wall rings of typically 0.5–3.0 μm in diameter. These spin textures are only observed when the exchange bias field due to the IL-DMI is not perfectly compensated by the magnetic field offset. From a combination of micromagnetic simulations, magnetic charge distribution, and topology arguments, we conclude that a non-zero remanent effective field with components both parallel and perpendicular to the anisotropy axis of the SAF is necessary to observe the rings. This work shows how the exchange bias field due to IL-DMI can lead to complex metastable spin states during reversal, important for the development of future spintronic devices.

Magnetic state switching in FeGa microstructures

This work demonstrates that magnetoelectric composite heterostructures can be designed at the length scale of 10 µms that can be switched from a magnetized state to a vortex state, effectively switching the magnetization off, using electric field induced strain. This was accomplished using thin film magnetoelectric heterostructures of Fe81.4Ga18.6 on a single crystal (011) [Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3]0.68-[PbTiO3]0.32 (PMN-32PT) ferroelectric substrate. The heterostructures were tripped from a multi-domain magnetized state to a flux closure vortex state using voltage induced strain in a piezoelectric substrate. FeGa heterostructures were deposited on a Si-substrate for superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry characterization of the magnetic properties. The magnetoelectric coupling of a FeGa continuous film on PMN-32PT was characterized using a magneto optical Kerr effect magnetometer with bi-axial strain gauges, and magnetic multi-domain heterostructures were imaged using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism—photoemission electron microscopy during the transition to the vortex state. The domain structures were modelled using MuMax3, a micromagnetics code, and compared with observations. The results provide considerable insight into designing magnetoelectric heterostructures that can be switched from an ‘on’ state to an ‘off’ state using electric field induced strain.

Imprint from ferromagnetic skyrmions in an antiferromagnet via exchange bias

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures holding great potential as nanoscale information carriers. Recently, skyrmions have been predicted in antiferromagnets, with key advantages in terms of stability, size, and dynamical properties over their ferromagnetic analogs. However, their experimental demonstration is still lacking. Here, we show the imprint from ferromagnetic skyrmions into a thin film of an IrMn antiferromagnet, at room temperature and zero external magnetic field, using exchange-bias. Using high-spatial-resolution x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM), we observed the imprinted spin textures within the IrMn from the XMCD signal of the uncompensated Mn spins at the interface with the ferromagnet. This result opens up a path for logic and memory devices based on skyrmion manipulation in antiferromagnets.

Effects of array shape and disk ellipticity in dipolar-coupled magnetic metamaterials

Two-dimensional lattices of dipolar-coupled thin film ferromagnetic nanodisks give rise to emergent superferromagnetic (SFM) order when the spacing between dots becomes sufficiently small. In this paper, we define micron-sized arrays of permalloy nanodisks arranged on a hexagonal lattice. The arrays were shaped as hexagons, squares, and rectangles to investigate finite-size effects in the SFM domain structure for such arrays. The resulting domain patterns were examined using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy. At room temperature, we find these SFM metamaterials to be below their blocking temperature. Distinct differences were found in the magnetic switching characteristics of horizontally and vertically oriented rectangular arrays. The results are corroborated by micromagnetic simulations.

Temperature dependence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ultrathin films

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction gives rise to a chiral exchange between neighboring spins in the technologically relevant class of perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin film materials. In this paper, we study the temperature dependence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction based on extensive characterization of a thin film which hosts a skyrmion state using both bulk magnetometry and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy. A version of the Bloch law explicitly for thin film geometries is derived to extract the exchange stiffness. The strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, $D$, is found to have a dependence on the saturation magnetization, ${M}_{s}$ of $D\ensuremath{\propto}{M}_{s}^{1.86\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16}$. Further, by extracting the uniaxial anisotropy ${K}_{u}$ and the exchange stiffness $A$, we find that $D\ensuremath{\propto}{K}_{u}^{1.02\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11}$ and $D\ensuremath{\propto}{A}^{0.95\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07}$. Skyrmion radii are also used to extract the strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which is compared to that derived from measurements of stripe domains. The origins of the correlations between material parameters are discussed and consequences of these relationships for skyrmion devices are considered.

Research progress of room temperature magnetic skyrmion and its application

<sec>It has been found that many magnetic materials possess the properties arising from skyrmions at room temperature. In addition to the common interaction energy, chiral interaction is also needed to form the skyrmion in magnetic material. There are four chiral magnetic interactions, namely: 1) Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction; 2) long-ranged magnetic dipolar interaction; 3) four-spin exchange interaction; 4) frustrated exchanged interaction. Through the competition between exchange interaction and chiral interaction, magnetic skyrmion can be realized in magnetic material subject to a certain magnetic field and temperature. The skyrmion generated by the DM interaction features small size (5–100 nm), which is easy to adjust. The skyrmion can be driven by magnetic field or ultralow current density. The magnetic materials with skyrmion can exhibit the properties related to the skyrmion Hall effect, the topological Hall effect and the emergent electrodynamics, which are closely related to the skyrmion number. The existence of skyrmion in the magnetic material can be indirectly measured by topological Hall effect. The movement of skyrmion can be driven by spin polarized current in the direction either parallel or perpendicular to the current direction. The movement of the skyrmion driven by spin polarized currents will continue when the current is present, and will disappear when the current disappears. </sec><sec>In previous studies, magnetic skyrmions were realized in a variety of materials. However magnetic skyrmions were found only in very limited types of single crystal materials at room temperature or near room temperature. In recent years, scientists have discovered a variety of magnetic skyrmion materials at room temperature, including film materials (such as multilayer materials, artificial skyrmion materials) and crystal materialssuch as <i>β</i>-Mn-type Co<sub>10–<i>x</i>/2</sub>Zn<sub>10–<i>x</i>/2</sub>Mn<i><sub>x</sub></i>, Fe<sub>3</sub>Sn<sub>2</sub>. Among all kinds of room temperature magnetic skyrmion materials, the most valuable one is the multilayer film material. The Skyrmion multilayer film has the advantages of small size, adjustable material type, simple preparation, good temperature stability, good device integration,etc. At the same time, skyrmion multilayer film is very easy to optimize by adjusting and constructing a special structure that has the wanted types of materials each with a certain thickness. Artificial skyrmion material obtains artificial skyrmion by constructing a micro-nano structure, therefore the artificial skyrmion with high-temperature stability can be realized by choosing high Curie temperature materials. There are a variety of materials which can realize the skyrmion above room temperature, such as Co<sub>9</sub>Zn<sub>9</sub>Mn<sub>2</sub> (300–390 K) and Fe<sub>3</sub>Sn<sub>2</sub> (100–400 K). These room temperature materials further widen the temperature application range of skyrmion. The room temperature materials can be prepared or characterized by a variety of techniquesincluding sputtering for fabrication and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism-photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) for characterization. </sec><sec>The discovery of the magnetic skyrmion materials at room temperature not only enriches the research content of materials science, but also makes the skyrmion widely applicable in novel electronic devices (such as racetrack memory, microwave detector, oscillators). Because the skyrmion has the advantages of small size, ultra-low driving current density, and topological stability, it is expected to produce racetrack memory based on the skyrmion with low energy consumption, non-volatile and high density. The MTJ microwave detector based on skyrmion can be achieved with no external magnetic field nor bias current but with low power input (< 1.0 μW); the sensitivity of the microwave detector can reach 2000 V·W<sup>–1</sup>. The frequency of the oscillator based on skyrmion can be tuned by magnetic field or current, and moreover, the oscillato is very easy to integrate with IC. In this paper, first, the basic characteristic of magnetic skyrmion is introduced; and then room temperature magnetic skyrmion is reviewed; finally the advances of the racetrack memory, microwave detectors and oscillators are introduced, highlighting the development trend of room temperature magnetic skyrmion. </sec>

Chiral asymmetry detected in a 2D array of permalloy square nanomagnets using circularly polarized x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

The sensitivity of circularly polarized x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (CXRMS) to chiral asymmetry has been demonstrated. The study was performed on a 2D array of Permalloy (Py) square nanomagnets of 700 nm lateral size arranged in a chess pattern, in a square lattice of 1000 nm lattice parameter. Previous x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) images on this sample showed the formation of vortices at remanence and a preference in their chiral state. The magnetic hysteresis loops of the array along the diagonal axis of the squares indicate a non-negligible and anisotropic interaction between vortices. The intensity of the magnetic scattering using circularly polarized light along one of the diagonal axes of the square magnets becomes asymmetric in intensity in the direction transversal to the incident plane at fields where the vortex states are formed. The asymmetry sign is inverted when the direction of the applied magnetic field is inverted. The result is the expected in the presence of an unbalanced chiral distribution. The effect is observed by CXRMS due to the interference between the charge scattering and the magnetic scattering.

Magnetization Reversal and Domain Nucleation in Ultra-Thin Co/Re(0001) Capped by Graphitic C

By using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism-photoemission electron microscopy, we study the magnetic behavior of ultra-thin Co on Re(0001) covered by a single layer of graphitic carbon. The carbon overlayer is lithographically fabricated via electron-stimulated dissociative adsorption of CO and subsequent annealing to 650 K. Graphitization is found to induce perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in cobalt at a thickness in the range 4-5 atomic layers, where out-of-plane domains separated by chiral Neél type walls are observed. The graphitic overlayer efficiently protects Co from oxidation upon exposure to ambient conditions, leaving its magnetic structure completely unaffected. The magnetic response of the Co film to an external field is imaged in situ across the hysteresis loop, allowing a quantitative analysis of the field-dependent domain area and structure. Our observations pinpoint the influence of the step morphology on the local magnetic behavior. Moreover, below the saturation field, the domains with chiral walls evolve into nanometric-sized magnetic structures resembling skyrmionic bubbles for applied fields <;20 G.

Heterojunction-induced magnetic anisotropy and magnetization reversal of Ni wires on LiNbO3 substrate

We report magnetic domain formation control within micro-scale polycrystalline Ni wires on a single-crystal Y-cut 128° LiNbO3 substrate. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy (XCDM-PEEM), micromagnetic simulations, and magnetoresistance (MR) measurements allowed us to estimate the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy induced by the magnetoelastic effect that originated at the interface between each Ni layer and the LiNbO3 substrate. Comparison of the XMCD-PEEM and MR measurement results shows that the competition between the shape magnetic anisotropy and the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy parallel to the orientation flat (OF) direction of the substrate leads to variations in both the magnetization order and the magnetization reversal process. The uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is estimated to be approximately 3.3 kJ/m3. This heterojunction structure composed of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric layers thus offers alternative ways to produce artificial functional multiferroic materials and devices.

High aspect-ratio Fe nanostrips are known to reversibly switch from a single-domain magnetic state to a multidomain diamond pattern as a function of temperature (T) and width. This magnetic bistability can be understood by the temperature-dependent balance between magnetocrystalline, shape and magnetoelastic anisotropies and has potential applications in magnetic logic devices. However, as Fe nanostructures easily oxidize, protecting the surface with capping layers may be required, which could largely affect the anisotropy balance. Here, we employ x-ray magnetic circular dichroism-photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD–PEEM) to study these thin Fe nanostrips before and after exposure to air.

Imaging magnetic vortex configurations in ferromagnetic nanotubes

We image the remnant magnetization configurations of CoFeB and permalloy nanotubes (NTs) using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photo-emission electron microscopy. The images provide direct evidence for flux-closure configurations, including a global vortex state, in which magnetization points circumferentially around the NT axis. Furthermore, micromagnetic simulations predict and measurements confirm that vortex states can be programmed as the equilibrium remnant magnetization configurations by reducing the NT aspect ratio.

Magnetization reversal of the domain structure in the anti-perovskite nitride Co3FeN investigated by high-resolution X-ray microscopy

We performed X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) photoemission electron microscopy imaging to reveal the magnetic domain structure of anti-perovskite nitride Co3FeN exhibiting a negative spin polarization. In square and disc patterns, we systematically and quantitatively determined the statistics of the stable states as a function of geometry. By direct imaging during the application of a magnetic field, we revealed the magnetic reversal process in a spatially resolved manner. We compared the hysteresis on the continuous area and the square patterns from the magnetic field-dependent XMCD ratio, which can be explained as resulting from the effect of the shape anisotropy, present in nanostructured thin films.

Quantitative analysis of shadow x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy

Shadow x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy is a recent technique, in which the photon intensity in the shadow of an object lying on a surface may be used to gather information about the three-dimensional magnetization texture inside the object. Our purpose here is to lay the basis of a quantitative analysis of this technique. We first discuss the principle and implementation of a method to simulate the contrast expected from an arbitrary micromagnetic state. Textbook examples and successful comparison with experiments are then given. Instrumental settings are finally discussed, having an impact on the contrast and spatial resolution: photon energy, microscope extraction voltage and plane of focus, microscope background level, electric-field related distortion of three-dimensional objects, Fresnel diffraction, or photon scattering.

Electrically driven magnetic domain wall rotation in multiferroic heterostructures to manipulate suspended on-chip magnetic particles.

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate deterministic electrically driven, strain-mediated domain wall (DW) rotation in ferromagnetic Ni rings fabricated on piezoelectric [Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3]0.66-[PbTiO3]0.34 (PMN-PT) substrates. While simultaneously imaging the Ni rings with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy, an electric field is applied across the PMN-PT substrate that induces strain in the ring structures, driving DW rotation around the ring toward the dominant PMN-PT strain axis by the inverse magnetostriction effect. The DW rotation we observe is analytically predicted using a fully coupled micromagnetic/elastodynamic multiphysics simulation, which verifies that the experimental behavior is caused by the electrically generated strain in this multiferroic system. Finally, this DW rotation is used to capture and manipulate micrometer-scale magnetic beads in a fluidic environment to demonstrate a proof-of-concept energy-efficient pathway for multiferroic-based lab-on-a-chip applications.

Cathode lens spectromicroscopy: methodology and applications.

The implementation of imaging techniques with low-energy electrons at synchrotron laboratories allowed for significant advancement in the field of spectromicroscopy. The spectroscopic photoemission and low energy electron microscope, SPELEEM, is a notable example. We summarize the multitechnique capabilities of the SPELEEM instrument, reporting on the instrumental aspects and the latest developments on the technical side. We briefly review applications, which are grouped into two main scientific fields. The first one covers different aspects of graphene physics. In particular, we highlight the recent work on graphene/Ir(100). Here, SPELEEM was employed to monitor the changes in the electronic structure that occur for different film morphologies and during the intercalation of Au. The Au monolayer, which creeps under graphene from the film edges, efficiently decouples the graphene from the substrate lowering the Dirac energy from 0.42 eV to 0.1 eV. The second field combines magnetism studies at the mesoscopic length scale with self-organized systems featuring ordered nanostructures. This example highlights the possibility to monitor growth processes in real time and combine chemical characterization with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism–photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD–PEEM) magnetic imaging by using the variable photon polarization and energy available at the synchrotron source.

Spin polarization asymmetry at the surface of chromia

We demonstrate boundary spin polarization at the surface of a Cr2O3 single crystal using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM), complementing prior spin polarized photoemission, spin polarized inverse photoemission, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy measurements. This work shows that placing a Cr2O3 single crystal into a single domain state will result in net Cr2O3 spin polarization at the boundary, even in the presence of a gold overlayer. There are indications that the SPLEEM contrast for the two polarization states may be different, consistent with scanning tunneling microscopy spectroscopy results obtained from ultrathin films of Cr2O3.

Imaging of buried 3D magnetic rolled-up nanomembranes.

Increasing performance and enabling novel functionalities of microelectronic devices, such as three-dimensional (3D) on-chip architectures in optics, electronics, and magnetics, calls for new approaches in both fabrication and characterization. Up to now, 3D magnetic architectures had mainly been studied by integral means without providing insight into local magnetic microstructures that determine the device performance. We prove a concept that allows for imaging magnetic domain patterns in buried 3D objects, for example, magnetic tubular architectures with multiple windings. The approach is based on utilizing the shadow contrast in transmission X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) photoemission electron microscopy and correlating the observed 2D projection of the 3D magnetic domains with simulated XMCD patterns. That way, we are not only able to assess magnetic states but also monitor the field-driven evolution of the magnetic domain patterns in individual windings of buried magnetic rolled-up nanomembranes.
