The study of electron beam flue gas treatment for coal-fired thermal plant in Japan

The fundamental research work with simulated coal-fired flue gas was performed in JAERI to get basic data for electron beam treatment of flue gas from thermal power plants in Japan. The standard condition of the experiments was set to be the same as that of next large scale pilot test in Nagoya. The concentrations of NO x and SO x were 225 ppm and 800 ppm, respectively. The temperature of the system was 65°C. The effect of multiple irradiation was observed for NO x removal. The target SO x and NO x removals (94% and 80%, respectively) with low NH 3 leakage (less than 10 ppm) were achieved at 9 kGy irradiation with 0.9 NH 3 stoichiometry during 7 hours continuous operation. The facility for the pilot plant (12,000 Nm 3/hr) has just built at the site of Shin-Nagoya power plant of Chubu Electric Power Company and will be started in full operation in November 1992.

Power system control experiments using 1 MJ SMES

Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc., developed a 1 MJ Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system composed of a pulsive superconducting magnet (1000 A, 2 H) and experimental researches connecting this system to a simulated power system composed of four generators, fluctuating load and some transmission lines were carried out in the laboratory of Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc., since 1989. The purpose of this experimental researches are to investigate the effects of SMES adapting in power system control use. This paper describes the results and confirmed effects of four kinds of experiments as the following, cut-off peak demand, load leveling effect for fluctuating load, improvement of dynamic stability and frequency control effect in isolated power system.

A new large scale DAS in CEPCO

The Chubu Electric Power Company (CEPCO) has developed the distribution automation system (DAS) by using minicomputers which monitor and control large and complex distribution networks with maximum reliability and promptness. A significant curtailment of the restoration operation time due to the occurrence of faults is expected by the introduction of the DAS. The authors introduce the DAS that was installed at CEPCO's Kita Utility Office in December 1989 and report on its operation performance. The objectives of the DAS are to enhance the reliability of the power supply, to improve the service quality for customers, and to improve the efficiency in facility utilization. The DAS connects the utility office online with the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system at the control center and the total distribution management system at the head office, and it has unique functions that will contribute to integrated distribution automation.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

The Construction of 700 MW Units with Advanced Steam Conditions

High priority has been given to increase efficiency of power generation plants; therefore, the steam conditions of fossil fuelled plants have gradually been improved. Recent developments of material and design techniques, the accumulated experience of the operation and so on have enabled advancements to be made in steam conditions. Two units of 700 MW with advanced steam conditions were constructed at Kawagoe Power Station by Chubu Electric Power Company, Inc. in Japan. These two double reheat units are designed at elevated steam conditions of 310 bar, 5661566/566° C, to improve thermal efficiency by 5 per cent in relative values, as compared with conventional supercritical steam conditions (240 bar, 538/566° C). Considerable research and development has been carried out by the manufacturers of the boiler and the turbine to achieve highly reliable operation. This paper presents the design features, the result of the research and development and the result of the operation of these units.

改良型ＢＷＲ圧力容器下鏡用自動ＩＳＩ装置の開発

An automated scanner of an ultrasonic brobe and its controller have been developed for the bottom head weld line of pressure vessel of Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR). In case of using the traditional scanning mechanism, internal pump casing and housing of control rod driving mechanism prevent an ultrasonic probe from scanning inspection zone. So it is difficult to apply it to that of ABWR.The features of the equipment; (1) a compact scanner using seven staged telescope type arm, (2) collision avoidance control with a touch sensor installed at the top of the telescopic arm, which is necessary to avoid collisions with obstacles such as internal pump housings control rod drives etc., (3) multiplexed data transmission by optical fibers, reducing the number of cables between the scanner and the controller. The equipment was successfully demostrated on a partial model of the full scale pressure vessel by optical fibers.This development was performed by the joint program of the Japan Atomic Power Co., the Toohoku Electric Power Co., the Tokyo Electric Power Co., the Chubu Electric Power Co., the Hokuriku Electric Power Co., the Chugoku Electric Power Co. and Hitachi, Ltd.

静岡県における環境放射線監視の経緯と現状

The features of the environmental monitoring, conducted by Shizuoka Prefectural Government around Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station, are as follows:(1) The staff member of the town governments and the representatives of agricultural and fishery cooperative associations take part in the monitoring organization.(2) The monitoring program is planned, taking into consideration the requirements by the staff members mentioned above.(3) The measurements are cross-checked by Shizuoka Prefectural Government and Chubu Electric Power Co.This report describes objective, organization, program and results of the environmental monitoring by Shizuoka Prefectural Government.

This paper describes the various requirements, problems and solutions in order to realize a power system network dynamic simulator for dispatcher training. Especially software techniques such as simulation algorithm and modelling are stressed. The description is based upon the experience gained in developing and implementing the simulator at the Power Control Center (PCC) of the Chubu Electric Power Co. (CEPCO), Japan. The simulator has been in operation since June 1981 in conjunction with the Automatic Dispatching System (ADS) at the PCC of CEPCO. To give trainees realistic simulation, the simulator calculates AC load flows and frequencies of a 287 node network every 5 seconds.

Development of Digital Backup Protective Relaying Equipment for EHV Power Systems Design Philosophy and Field Experience

To meet increasing power system demands, EHV transmission lines capable of transporting 3000 to 4000 MW loads have been constructed in Japan. In these heavy load flow systems, performance improvements are required which take into account the effect of heavy loads in backup orotection systems consisting mainly of distance relays. To meet this requirement, new digital backup protective relaying equipment using microcomputers was developed. Field tests were carried out for about seven months in 275 kV transmission lines of the Chubu Electric Power Co., As a result, it was clarified that the digital relaying equipment attained the required performance levels in terms of protective performance, noise and surge immunity, and ease of maintenance. This paper presents the protective relaying scheme, design philosophy and field test results.

浜岡原子力発電所の運転実績

Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 was built as the first nuclear power station of Chubu Electric Power Co. The plant is 540 MW standard BWR-4 with some specific considerations in seismic design and intake structure. Commercial operation began on Mar 17, 1976, 1st cycle ended on Oct. 1, 1976, at core average burnup of 8, 563 MWD/t. Forty four fuel assemblies were refuelled during first regular overhaul and maintenance period.Much effort has been made to keep good integrity of fuel rod, both on the process of fuel design and manufacturing and on the operation of the reactor, resulting in no failed fuel was detected upto now. Core and fuel management system has been developped including basic physics calculation, operating guide calculation, operational and fuel accounting data storage and many others. Terminal console (including I/O machine) at plant site has been utilized effectively to accomplish real-time calculation for better plant operation.

Influence of Air Density on Flashover Voltages of Air Gaps and Insulators

Flashover tests were conducted with the cooperation of the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc., and the Chubu Electric Power Company, Inc., at the top of Mount Ny?gasa, 1850 meters above sea level and the Takeyama Laboratory, nearly at sea level, to obtain comparative data to evaluate the influence of air density on the flashover voltages of air gaps and insulators.

Analog Computer Study of Automatic Frequency Ratio Control on an HVDC Transmission System

A method has been developed to simulate an automatic frequency control system in ac-dc power transmission on an analog computer. As an example of an ac-dc system a model of Sakuma frequency changer, between Tokyo Electric Power Co. system (50 Hz) and Chubu Electric Power Co. system (60 Hz), is studied in detail. Three new methods of automatic frequency ratio control (AFRC) by dc transmission are considered and compared. The variation of frequencies in the ac systems and the dc power change due to a step load increase in the Chubu power system are examined. These frequency variations and power change are used to optimize the parameters of the AFRC devices.
