Long-term effects on the liver of various therapeutic and prophylactic drugs are reviewed. In regards to steroid contraceptive agents (SCA) and anabolic steroids oral contraceptives (OC) have been associated with cholestasis an increased incidence of gallstone disease periportal vascular dilatation and jaundice vascular disease thrombosis and possibly liver-cell adenoma and numerous acute and chronic hepatobiliary diseases. In addition to hepatobiliary diseases anabolic steroid therapy has been associated with tumors histologically resembling liver-cell carcinoma as well as cholestasis gallstone disease and peliosis.
