Assessing Job Accessibility and Sustainable Mobility among Low-income Groups in Penang, Malaysia

Sustainable mobility emerges as a more viable approach for addressing urban mobility challenges and enhancing overall quality of life. The primary cause of urban mobility issues may be attributed to the urban built environment, wherein various physical features such as buildings, public infrastructure, and transit systems have significantly contributed to the reliance on private vehicles. Hence, this study examines job accessibility and the background of mobility among the low-income groups who are the urban workers in Penang Island, Malaysia to determine the factor of this target group's dominant transport mode choice. Using the quantitative method, this study was conducted using a questionnaire with 306 respondents selected by stratified random sampling based upon a ratio to represent the low-income households in the northeast and southwest districts of Penang. The study revealed that individuals from low-income backgrounds exhibit a significant reliance on privately owned vehicles. Furthermore, individuals in question exhibit a preference for owning and utilising economically viable, temporally expedient modes of transportation that optimise spatial efficiency, such as motorbikes, for their daily commute to their place of employment. Policymakers may take into account the factors of affordability and punctuality when formulating a transport system that is characterised by both cost-effectiveness and efficiency, thereby addressing the mobility requirements of low-income groups.

PENGARUH BEBERAPA FAKTOR SECARA PARSIAL DAN SIMULTAN TERHADAP PERMINTAAN TRANSPORTASI ONLINE GOCAR DAN GRABCAR DI KOTA MATARAM

Technological developments that occur in the global world today have resulted in changes in the choice of transportation modes in Indonesia, especially in the city of Mataram. Apart from that, the government's inability to provide public transportation has caused people to switch to other transportation that makes it easier and shortens travel time, namely online transportation. Application-based or online transportation services are currently one of the people's choices for traveling. One of the largest and most popular types of online transportation services currently that uses an online system is Gojek and Grab. This study was conducted to determine the factors that influence the demand for online transportation, namely GoCar and GrabCar. The analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression to determine the influence of the variables cost, distance, income, number of family members, ownership of private vehicl and waiting time. From the results of the analysis, it was found that demand for GoCar was partially influenced by cost, distance and income factors. Meanwhile, demand for GrabCar is partially influenced by cost and distance factors. Simultaneously, demand for GoCar and GrabCar is influenced by the factors cost, distance, income, number of family members, private vehicle ownership and waiting time by 81.4%, likewise demand for GoCar and GrabCar is partially influenced by these six factors.

Production Fragmentation and Transport Mode Choice in EU-28 Exports

ABSTRACT This study uses detailed data on exports from the European Union (EU-28) to non-EU countries to investigate the impact of global production fragmentation on the choice of transportation modes. The article finds a positive relationship between production fragmentation and air transportation. The study also finds that air transportation is more likely to be chosen for high-value products. Additionally, the positive effect of production fragmentation on the likelihood of using air transportation is more pronounced when goods are exported to medium-range markets, upper-middle-income countries, countries with better air transportation infrastructure, and time-sensitive products.

A novel two-phase approach for a sustainable p-hub median problem with multiple service levels and carbon cap-and trade policy under uncertainty

ABSTRACT To reduce the carbon emissions for society's sustainable development and satisfy customers' personalized delivery service, this paper addresses the cap-and-trade policy and multiple service levels into a p-hub median problem. In the hub network designing, single-assignment patterns between hubs and demand nodes, the choice of transportation mode for each O-D pair and the uncertainties of carbon emission and price are taken into account. Based on a fuzzy chance-constrained programming approach, a fuzzy mathematical model under an expected cost-minimization context with some fuzzy constraints is first presented. Then a two-phase approach is proposed to solve the proposed model. Finally, in view of the comparative analysis with small- and large-scale Turkish instances, serval managerial insights are finally obtained for government and logistics companies in the reduction of carbon emission and the hub network's total designing cost for the sustainable development.

Public transport accessibility indicators to urban and regional services in Great Britain

Public transport accessibility to urban and regional services has been found to relate to various social and economic processes, such as unemployment, transport mode choice, property prices, and public health. A frequent type of measures representing accessibility are location-based. While these offer advantages, like flexibility and ease of interpretation, their estimation usually requires specialized skills and substantial computational resources. To lower these barriers, we have prepared a suite of accessibility indicators for key services across Great Britain at a spatially disaggregated level. The dataset includes ready-to-use public transport accessibility indicators for employment, general practitioners (GP, or family physician), hospitals, grocery stores, supermarkets, primary and secondary schools, and urban centres. It also includes the raw travel time matrix from each origin to every potential destination, a primary input for such indicator estimation. Altogether, this resource offers various levels of application, from direct input into a range of research topics to the foundation for creating comprehensive custom indicators.

Exploration of the Factors Militating Against the Massive Adoption of the Inland Water Transport Mode in Niger Delta, Nigeria.

This study investigated the reason why road transport mode is preferred over the inland water mode in the Niger Delta region. The study was delimited to only few selected coastal capital cities in the Niger Delta. The research method adopted in the study was a survey. Simple severity index was also used to ascertain the safety level of both ferries and automobiles which could influence commuters’ mode choice behaviours. The data required for this study were obtained from both primary (obtained through the administration of questionnaire to household heads) and secondary data extracted from FRSC, records. Four states in the Niger Delta (Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers) with very similar transportation system were selected for the survey. A total number of 5,000 pieces of questionnaire were distributed proportionately. Households were randomly selected from streets and offices in the urban centers and the jetties\ water fronts (Khaima, Odi, Nembe, Marine Base Abonima wharf) to capture ferry users. From the results, it was gathered that the accident level in both water and road are similar. The introduction of free bus system affects users’ choice of transport mode, hence militating against the adoption of inland water transport mode in the region. The introduction of Rapid Mass Transit affects users’ choice of transport mode, thereby militating against the adoption of inland water transport mode in the region. The introduction of Monorail System affects users’ choice of transport mode, thus, negatively impacting the adoption of inland water transport mode in the Niger Delta region. To make the inland water borne transport mode attractive to the people of Niger Delta region, there should be a government intervention in the introduction Luxurious Water Taxi, which the study respondents agreed to that it will positively affects their choice of this transport mode.

Identifying heterogeneity in university students’ transport mode choice

College students are argued to have some interest in adopting alternative mobility solutions. Even though previous works have examined the transport mode choice of college students, the inclusion of shared mobility services is scarcely found. Thus, this study aims to examine the transport mode choice of university students by revealing the heterogeneity in transport mode usage frequency incorporating socio-demographic and travel characteristics as covariates in the latent class cluster analysis (LCCA) framework. The analysis results in four clusters. Clusters of public transport users and walkers are mostly characterized by lower-income students who can reach the university in less than 11 minutes. Private car users mostly fall into a cluster where students generally come from higher-income families. Policies supporting sustainable transportation among college students are discussed, including the mobility points around the university and public transport stops.

Academics' mobility in the agglomeration of Constantine: A transports post-use evaluation

The purpose of this study is to closely examine and analyze the increasing phenomenon of academics? urban mobility among students and teachers in the Constantine agglomeration through the examination of their movements. The employed methodology incorporates diverse qualitative research methods, such as covert participant observation, acquiring documentary and statistical data, establishing a research basis on the context, and post-use evaluation through an e-questionnaire survey. The analysis was conducted using tools such as GIS and SPSS. The evaluation utilized distinct criteria, such as origin-destination patterns, modal utilization, travel expenses, and frequency, travel timetables, commuting duration, and disparities between outbound and return journeys. The findings indicate that the commuting circuits of academics are mainly deployed in high-traffic circulation routes. The focus is on intermodality, which entails utilizing transportation modes other than personal vehicles and university buses, primarily due to the presence of a tramway line connecting the Constantine universities. The bus and taxi are frequently employed as the principal means along the tramway. The transport method, its cost, and the frequency of movement are significantly correlated. The travel schedules include peak periods in the morning and evening, and commute time is influenced by factors such as choice of transport mode, accessibility, and traffic congestion. The transport system in the Constantine agglomeration witnesses substantial usage during the academic period.

Uporedna vremensko-prostorna analiza putovanja različitim vidovima transporta u Novom Sadu

One of the most important factors in the choice of transport mode is the travel time. When choosing a transport mode, passengers prefer the alternative that offers a shorter travel time. The simplest and most commonly used method for determining travel time is a survey of citizens. However, the survey tends to be subjective and the data obtained can be inaccurate. The paper presents the research carried out in Novi Sad, where the travel time from the origin to the destination on three routes was analysed and differentiated using the Global Navigation Satellite System for the following transport modes: walking, cycling, passenger car, taxi and bus public transport. The results show that the bicycle is competitive with all other modes studied in terms of travel time. The journey by bus public transport took the longest compared to the other motorised transport modes. Walking had the lowest proportion of time lost in the total travel time structure.

Travel Behavior Changes during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Indonesia: Present, Past and Future

COVID-19 (Coronavirus Pandemic2019) brought major changes to the behavior and mobility of people all over the world. This change is mainly a consequence of the lockdownand social distancing taken by governments in most countries around the world. This article presents an analysis of a survey conducted in major cities from 6 big islands in Indonesia (Java, Bali, Sumatera, Kalimantan, Maluku, Papua) where citizens were asked about their mobility preferences before, during, and after the lockdown due to the virus and about factors that influence the decision in choosing a mode. The surveyors distributed the closed questionnaireusing Googleformsto reduce the contact time with the respondents. The data is processed through a comparative test with the Friedman Test revealed that there is an average difference in the choice of transportation mode before, during, and after the pandemic and there is also a difference about the main travel purpose of the community before, during, and after the pandemic. The main purpose of respondents' travel before the pandemic was work/school, during the pandemic it was shopping the daily needs (except those working in the essential sector) and after the pandemic returning to work/school as the main purpose of travel. The resultsof the influence test on ninesocio-demographic conditions revealed that before the pandemic there were 6 factors that influenced the mode choice, which is: gender, type of job, working in the essential sector or not, the number of people in the family, vehicle ownership and marital status influenced the modal choice, during pandemic COVID-19there was 5 influential factors, which is: age, occupation, working in the essential sector/not, number of family members and vehicle ownership, after the pandemic are the same as before the pandemic except working in the essential sector/not.

Analysis of Travel Choice Behaviours of Commuters in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria

This study modelled the travel choice behaviour among commuters in a few selected coastal capital cities in the Niger Delta, reference to road and inland waterways. Multinomial-logit model was used in explaining discrete choiceswhile multiple Regressions was used for the model equation. The following factors that influence the behaviour of commuters such as travel time, cost, and socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics were investigated. A simple severity index was also used to ascertain the safety level of both ferries and automobiles which could influence commuters' mode choice behaviours. The alternative transport modes available to users were considered and include –private cars, walking, bus service and ferry (boat). From the findings, the use of private cars will be reduced considerably if the public transport sector is given attention in terms of infrastructure/facilities so they can compete. The greater percent that refused to change from private cars to public monorail show that private car users are attached to their cars not just for convenience but for prestige, flexibility, and privacy and finally, it was gathered from the model equation that variables like employment status, distance to work and driver's license had zero effect on the behaviour of people per their choice of transport mode.

Characteristics of Mode Choice of Student Transportations: A Policy Approach for Safer School Commutes

The use of private vehicles dominates travel compared to public transportation which has a significant impact on students’ routine trips to school. The use of private vehicles by students, especially those without a driver’s license is still very high. Despite the availability of alternatives, a gap exists in understanding students’ transportation preferences and potential demand for safer options. In light of the fact that accidents among students contribute to the highest number of accident cases. This study aims to provide recommendations for alternative transportation for students in Majalengka as a form of policy intervention, through analysis using the multinomial logistic regression method. This analysis identifies variables that influence the choice of transportation mode based on statistical principles. then models and calculates potential demand based on existing scenarios. The results of analysis show the value of potential demand for various alternative transportation modes other than private vehicles such as electric bicycles, school transportation, and public transportation. with the highest potential demand for school transportation modes. Therefore, the implementation plan for alternative transportation for students needs to be considered from quantitative and legal aspects, adjusted to the priority scale and level of urgency set by stakeholders responsible for transportation in the local government.
