Ecophysiological traits of seedlings from different accessions of Stipa tenacissima along a climatic gradient

Predicting the future impact of climate change on Stipa tenacissima steppes is of paramount importance to prevent desertification. From this perspective, we selected seven populations, covering a rainfall range from 100 to 600 mm/year at the sites of seed collection, and we grew the seedlings at the same site. Gas exchange measurements of CO2, light response curves, chlorophyll content and isotopic analysis were investigated. Thala and Valencia populations displayed a contrasted gas exchange response. Both populations were subjected to A-Ci curve analysis. No significant difference was detected between these two different populations in the maximum rate of carboxylation (Vcmax) and the maximum rate of electron transport (Jmax). Stipa tenacissima exhibited a variable response in relation to different light intensities. Photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters proved to be significantly different among populations in response to light intensities. All populations exhibited similar chlorophyll content. The isotopic analysis highlighted a different carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N) and carbon content © among populations. Mesic populations presented a higher gas exchange activity and light response. The xeric populations performed a photosynthesis adjustment along with minimizing chlorophyll content. Under climate change, S. tenacissima limits productivity, which may lead to desertification.

The effect of chelating agents on the Zn-phytoextraction potential of hemp and soil microbial activity

BackgroundHemp (Cannabis sativa) is a crop with a wide range of uses, from the production of fiber and seeds to the secondary metabolites for medicinal purposes. In addition, it is characterized by high biomass yield and the ability to accumulate heavy metals, which makes this plant convenient for phytoremediation purposes. In this study, the effect of applying exogenous biodegradable chelating agents, citric acid (CA) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), to zinc-contaminated soil on zinc (Zn) uptake by two industrial hemp varieties ‘Felina 32’ and ‘Monoica’ was studied. The effect of CA and NTA on available Zn in soils was investigated using an ‘in pot’ experiment under controlled conditions. The effect of both tested compounds on soil microbial activity was simultaneously evaluated.ResultsAfter the application of NTA at a concentration of 5 mmol L−1, a > threefold increased accumulation of Zn in the above-ground parts was recorded in the ‘Felina 32’ variety. In the ‘Monoica’ variety, the levels of Zn in the above-ground parts were increased > twofold. NTA affected the soil microbiome negatively, causing decreased enzyme activity (in ‘Monoica’ planted soil) and induced respiration (in ‘Monoica’ and especially in ‘Felina 32’ planted soil). On the other hand, CA application did not lead to significantly increased Zn levels in any of the studied hemp varieties. Together with CA’s negative effects on some soil enzymes, CA enhanced urease activity, dehydrogenase and several respiration types for the ‘Felina 32’ variety and exerted less detrimental effect on the soil microbiome. No toxic effects from increased Zn uptake and accumulation in experimental plants were detected, accounting for the unchanged physiological stress markers (levels of photosynthetic pigments and proline in leaves, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters) and selected growth traits of the above-ground organs and root system.ConclusionsFrom the studied varieties, ‘Felina 32’ seems to be more suitable for Zn-phytoextraction because of its higher tolerance to increased Zn levels, higher biomass production and Zn accumulation capacity. Our results indicate the potential of using the ‘Felina 32’ variety in NTA-assisted Zn phytoextraction from contaminated soils.Graphical

Ipomoea cairica (L.) from Mangrove Wetlands Acquired Salt Tolerance through Phenotypic Plasticity

Palmate-leaved morning glory (Ipomoea cairica (L.) Sweet) is a fast-growing perennial herbaceous twining vine that was recently discovered to invade mangrove wetlands in China. To understand the mechanism of its successful invasion, the salt tolerance of a coastal ecotype from Zhuhai and a terrestrial ecotype from Guangzhou were compared under salt stress. The morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters related to growth, ion homeostasis, photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, oxidative stress, and apoptosis were measured in both ecotypes. Monitoring apoptosis showed that the protoplasts of the coastal ecotype underwent apoptosis and were later compared with those of the terrestrial ecotype. The coastal ecotype was also found to have higher regenerated stems; less water loss, sodium (Na+) uptake, and membrane damage; higher salt gland density and area; and better photosynthetic performance than the terrestrial ecotype. The coastal ecotype probably prevented salt-related damage by reducing its water loss and secreting excess Na+ through its lower stomatal density and higher density and area of salt glands. The coastal ecotype also maintained a better balance of Na+, potassium ions, nitrogen, and phosphorus under salt stress. Moreover, the coastal ecotype had higher activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase, and a higher content of non-enzymatic antioxidants, including proline and anthocyanins, which indicate a stronger antioxidant ability. Our results suggest that the coastal ecotype adapts to a higher salt tolerance than the terrestrial ecotype by enhancing its exclusion of salt, adjusting its osmolytes, and through photosynthetic efficiency, which could explain its successful invasion in the mangrove wetland ecosystem.

Phytohormone Supplementation for Nutrient Removal from Mariculture Wastewater by Oocystis borgei in Sequential Batch Operation

To enhance the nutrient removal efficiency of Oocystis borgei for mariculture wastewater (MW), the effects and processes of three phytohormones on nitrogen and phosphorus removal from synthetic mariculture wastewater (SMW) by O. borgei under sequential batch operation were compared. The findings revealed that the supplementation with 10−6 M 3-indoleacetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA3), and zeatin (ZT) resulted in the most effective elimination, while there was no appreciable difference among them. The nitrogen and phosphorus indices of the effluent dramatically reduced (p < 0.01) upon the supplementation of phytohormones, and the removal effects were ranked as NO3−-N > PO43−-P > NH4+-N > NO2−-N. The removal rates for NH4+-N and PO43−-P were 0.72–0.74 mg·L−1·d−1 and 1.26–1.30 mg·L−1·d−1, respectively. According to physiological studies, phytohormones enhanced the levels of photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (Fv/Fm and φPSII), thereby improving photosynthetic activity. Additionally, they stimulated Nitrate Reductase (NR) and Glutamine Synthetase (GS) activities to promote nitrogen metabolism and increased Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), and carotenoid contents to mitigate oxidative stress damage caused by abiotic stress. These activities contribute to the proliferation of O. borgei, which in turn resulted in an increase in the assimilation of nitrogen and phosphorus from SMW. In conclusion, phytohormone supplementation significantly increased nutrient removal from SMW by O. borgei in a sequential batch reactor, which has potential application in MW treatment.

Soil water availability modulates the response of grapevine leaf gas exchange and PSII traits to a simulated heat wave

Background and aimsA better understanding of plant carbon assimilation, water status and photosystem performance responses to combined heat and drought stress would help to optimize grapevine management under such limiting conditions.MethodsGas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured in potted grapevines, cv Sauvignon Blanc, before, during and after simulated six-day heat (Tmax = 40 °C) wave using heated well-watered (HW), heated drought-stressed (HD), non-heated well-watered (CW) and non-heated dry (CD) vines.ResultsPhotosynthesis and stomatal conductance in HW vines increased during the morning and dropped in the afternoon with respect to CW vines. Daily plant transpiration in HW almost doubled that of CW vines. When grapevines were already exposed to drought, the effects of the heat wave were negligible, with HD plants showing similar leaf photosynthesis and transpiration to their CD counterparts. Heat, but not drought stress, decreased the maximum (Fv/Fm) and effective photochemical quantum yield of PSII (φPSII), and also affected the use of absorbed energy. HW plants dissipated more radiative energy as heat, a protective mechanism of the photosystem, while HD vines increased the energy dissipated by non-regulated non-photochemical pathways, which might lead to photoinhibition damages. The different behavior could be due to the enhanced transpiration rate and consequent decrease in leaf temperature in HW as compared to HD vines. After the heat wave, only HW vines recovered the afternoon values of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and φPSII to similar levels as those in CW vines.ConclusionDrought had a more significant effect than heat stress on photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration. The combined heat and drought stress, however, increased the proportion of energy lost by the leaves through harmful non-regulated dissipative pathways. With adequate soil water availability, grapevines withstood the heat wave period through an increase in leaf transpiration, which decreased leaf temperature and protected the PSII from heat damage.

Prediction of biomass accumulation and tolerance of wheat seedlings to drought and elevated temperatures using hyperspectral imaging.

Early prediction of important agricultural traits in wheat opens up broad prospects for the development of approaches to accelerate the selection of genotypes for further breeding trials. This study is devoted to the search for predictors of biomass accumulation and tolerance of wheat to abiotic stressors. Hyperspectral (HS) and chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) parameters were analyzed as predictors under laboratory conditions. The predictive ability of reflectance and normalized difference indices (NDIs), as well as their relationship with parameters of photosynthetic activity, which is a key process influencing organic matter production and crop yields, were analyzed. HS parameters calculated using the wavelengths in Red (R) band and the spectral range next to the red edge (FR-NIR) were found to be correlated with biomass accumulation. The same ranges showed potential for predicting wheat tolerance to elevated temperatures. The relationship of HS predictors with biomass accumulation and heat tolerance were of opposite sign. A number of ChlF parameters also showed statistically significant correlation with biomass accumulation and heat tolerance. A correlation between HS and ChlF parameters, that demonstrated potential for predicting biomass accumulation and tolerance, has been shown. No predictors of drought tolerance were found among the HS and ChlF parameters analyzed.

Beneficial Effect of Exogenously Applied Calcium Pyruvate in Alleviating Water Deficit in Sugarcane as Assessed by Chlorophyll a Fluorescence Technique

The growing demand for food production has led to an increase in agricultural areas, including many with low and irregular rainfall, stressing the importance of studies aimed at mitigating the harmful effects of water stress. From this perspective, the objective of this study was to evaluate calcium pyruvate as an attenuator of water deficit on chlorophyll a fluorescence of five sugarcane genotypes. The experiment was conducted in a plant nursery where three management strategies (E1—full irrigation, E2—water deficit with the application of 30 mM calcium pyruvate, and E3—water deficit without the application of calcium pyruvate) and five sugarcane genotypes (RB863129, RB92579, RB962962, RB021754, and RB041443) were tested, distributed in randomized blocks, in a 3 × 5 factorial design with three replications. There is dissimilarity in the fluorescence parameters and photosynthetic pigments of the RB863129 genotype in relation to those of the RB041443, RB96262, RB021754, and RB92579 genotypes. Foliar application of calcium pyruvate alleviates the effects of water deficit on the fluorescence parameters of chlorophyll a and photosynthetic pigments in sugarcane, without interaction with the genotypes. However, subsequent validation tests will be necessary to test and validate the adoption of this technology under field conditions.

Photosynthesis promotion mechanisms of artificial humic acid depend on plant types: A hydroponic study on C3 and C4 plants

It is feasible to improve plant photosynthesis to address the global climate goals of carbon neutrality. The application of artificial humic acid (AHA) is a promising approach to promote plant photosynthesis, however, the associated mechanisms for C3 and C4 plants are still unclear. In this study, the real-time chlorophyll synthesis and microscopic physiological changes in plant leave cells with the application of AHA were first revealed using the real-time chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and Non-invasive Micro-test Technique. The transcriptomics suggested that the AHA application up-regulated the genes in photosynthesis, especially related to chlorophyll synthesis and light energy capture, in maize and the genes in photosynthetic vitality and carbohydrate metabolic process in lettuce. Structural equation model suggested that the photodegradable substances and growth hormones in AHA directly contributes to photosynthesis of C4 plants (0.37). AHA indirectly promotes the photosynthesis in the C4 plants by upregulating functional genes (e.g., Mg-CHLI and Chlorophyllase) involved in light capture and transformation (0.96). In contrast, AHA mainly indirectly promotes C3 plants photosynthesis by increasing chlorophyll synthesis, and the Rubisco activity and the ZmRbcS expression in the dark reaction of lettuce (0.55). In addition, Mg2+ transfer and flux in C3 plant leaves was significantly improved by AHA, indirectly contributes to plant photosynthesis (0.24). Finally, the AHA increased the net photosynthetic rate of maize by 46.50 % and that of lettuce by 88.00 %. Application of the nutrients- and hormone-rich AHA improves plant growth and photosynthesis even better than traditional Hoagland solution. The revelation of the different photosynthetic promotion mechanisms on C3 and C4 plant in this work guides the synthesis and efficient application of AHA in green agriculture and will propose the development of AHA technology to against climate change resulting from CO2 emissions in near future.

Short-Term Evaluation of Woodland Strawberry in Response to Melatonin Treatment under Low Light Environment

The cultivation of strawberries in controlled environments presents challenges related to environmental stressors, especially insufficient light. Melatonin, as a widely investigated plant growth regulator, was considered as a potential candidate to mitigate damage, and enhance photosynthesis stability. However, whether melatonin can improve photosynthesis under light deficiency in woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca) remains elusive. In this study, we evaluated gas exchange parameters, Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, photochemical efficiency, and the related genes’ expression levels to decipher the multifaceted impact of melatonin on photosynthesis. We found concentration-dependent effects of melatonin on photosynthetic parameters, with potential benefits at lower concentration and inhibitory effects at higher concentration. Notably, melatonin increased non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), a mechanism for dissipating excess light energy, while leaving photochemical quenching (qP) relatively stable. Further analysis showed that melatonin up-regulated key xanthophyll cycle-related genes (DHAR, VDE, and PsbS), indicating its involvement in energy dissipation processes. In conclusion, our study uncovered the dual and complex role of melatonin in the short-term response of photosynthesis in woodland strawberries under low-light conditions.

Response of plastic film mulched maize to soil and atmospheric water stresses in an arid irrigation area

Water stress can severely decrease crop productivity by restricting photosynthesis, while the use of plastic film mulching can mitigate these water stress effects. However, the intricacies of photosynthetic and stomatal responses to soil water stress under plastic film mulching, particularly when combined with atmospheric water stress, have not been well studied, especially in arid irrigation areas. Limited research has investigated photosynthetic chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, stomatal responses, grain filling process and crop productivity to soil and atmospheric water stress under plastic film mulching. Our study addresses this knowledge gap through a comprehensive field experiment in an arid irrigation area involving maize (Zea mays L.). Well-watered and water deficit conditions with and without plastic film mulching treatments, alone or combined with atmospheric water stress (different vapor pressure deficits) were conducted. Our findings revealed that soil water stress significantly increased stomatal limitations (by 6.4–12.4 %) and may cause non-stomatal limitations. Plastic film mulching significantly improved plant photosynthetic performance (increased net photosynthesis rate by 12.2–39.8 %), chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and stomatal regulation. Under mulched conditions, soil water stress primarily affected photosynthetic performance through stomatal limitations. Moreover, plastic film mulching significantly improved grain filling process (increased grain-filling rate by 6.3–78.5 %) and productivity (increased grain yield by 12.1–45.8 %) in spring maize subjected to soil water stress. Atmospheric water stress, alone or combined with soil water stress, influenced plant photosynthetic performance, decreasing the net photosynthesis rate and stomatal conductance. Mulching enhanced photosynthetic performance under atmospheric water stress. Overall, the positive effect of mulching on spring maize photosynthetic performance and productivity under soil and atmospheric water stresses holds promise for alleviating water resource shortages and addressing global climate warming issues in arid irrigation areas.

Melatonin alleviates cadmium toxicity by regulating root endophytic bacteria community structure and metabolite composition in apple.

The level of cadmium (Cd) accumulation in orchard soils is increasing, and excess Cd will cause serious damage to plants. Melatonin is a potent natural antioxidant and has a potential role in alleviating Cd stress. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exogenous melatonin on a root endophyte bacteria community and metabolite composition under Cd stress. The results showed that melatonin significantly scavenged the reactive oxygen species and restored the photosynthetic system (manifested by the improved photosynthetic parameters, total chlorophyll content and the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (Fv/Fm)), increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes (the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and ascorbate oxidase) and reduced the concentration of Cd in the roots and leaves of apple plants. High-throughput sequencing showed that melatonin increased the endophytic bacterial community richness significantly and changed the community structure under Cd stress. The abundance of some potentially beneficial endophytic bacteria (Ohtaekwangia, Streptomyces, Tabrizicola and Azovibrio) increased significantly, indicating that the plants may absorb potentially beneficial microorganisms to resist Cd stress. The metabolomics results showed that melatonin significantly changed the composition of root metabolites, and the relative abundance of some metabolites decreased, suggesting that melatonin may resist Cd stress by depleting root metabolites. In addition, co-occurrence network analysis indicated that some potentially beneficial endophytes may be influenced by specific metabolites. These results provide a theoretical basis for studying the effects of melatonin on the endophytic bacterial community and metabolic composition in apple plants.

Early detection of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass responses to drought stress by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence parameters

AbstractKentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.; drought resistant) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; drought sensitive) are economically important grass species contrasting in drought stress resistance. This study determined the optimal chlorophyll fluorescence parameters to indicate drought incidence and whether the parameters differentiate intra‐ and interspecies variations in drought stress. For each species, nine cultivars were exposed to well‐watered or drought (water withheld) conditions in growth chambers containing high‐throughput photosynthetic imagers to track real‐time responses of maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), quantum yield of photosystem II (ΦII), non‐photochemical quenching (NPQ), energy‐dependent quenching (qE), and photoinhibition‐associated quenching (qI). Soil moisture content and relative water content of leaf tissues were evaluated. Due to drought, Fv/Fm and ΦII decreased for cultivars of both species but earlier for perennial ryegrass compared to Kentucky bluegrass. The NPQ, qI, and qE values exhibited more dynamic and earlier changes due to drought compared to Fv/Fm and ΦII and allowed for early, mid, and late drought responses to be illustrated. Drought induced an increase in NPQ, qI, and qE values, which corresponded to activation of photoprotection mechanisms, and was exhibited earlier for perennial ryegrass compared to Kentucky bluegrass. As the drought treatment progressed, a decrease or stabilization of low values of NPQ, qI, and qE was observed, and the lowest values were associated with the most drought‐sensitive cultivars. These results indicate important stress tolerance protection mechanisms for grass species and will broadly impact basic and applied grass research as a nondestructive phenotyping tool.

Unveiling the intrinsic mechanism of photoprotection in bamboo under high light

The study aims to unveil the intrinsic photoprotection mechanism of bamboo under high light. Bamboo, a fast-growing and regenerative plant, exhibits a wide distribution in temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions. Bamboo frequently exposed to various environmental stresses, including excessive light, which can cause photoinhibition and even photooxidative damage to the photosynthetic apparatus. However, the characteristics and intrinsic mechanism of bamboo photoprotection are still unclear. The photosynthetic performance and photoprotective capacity of 20 bamboo species by the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters are investigated in this study. Based on the results of similar photosynthetic and photoprotective characteristics in diverse bamboo species, moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) is selected as the representative bamboo species for further investigation. The light energy allocation in leaves of moso bamboo under different light intensities is analyzed to reveal its adaptability to light fluctuations in nature. Meanwhile, the expression levels of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ)-related genes in leaves of moso bamboo under high light is analyzed. The results demonstrate that the expression of NPQ-related genes is induced by high light, especially that of PsbSs and VDE is significant, indicating they play important roles in photoprotection. Furthermore, in-planta gene editing of PsbSs and VDE is conducted respectively. The sequencing results reveal that the mutation rates of edited PsbS1, PsbS2, and VDE were 12.48 %, 13.42 %, and 14.43 % respectively. As a result, the NPQ values with edited PsbSs, VDE, and both are all lower than those of control under high light, indicating that the photoprotective capacity of bamboo leaves is weakened after gene editing. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the photoprotection mechanism in bamboo and establish a foundation for breeding new germplasm with enhanced carbon fixation capacity and higher bamboo timber yield.

Enhanced photosynthetic efficiency by nitrogen-doped carbon dots via plastoquinone-involved electron transfer in apple.

Artificially enhancing photosynthesis is critical for improving crop yields and fruit qualities. Nanomaterials have demonstrated great potential to enhance photosynthetic efficiency; however, the mechanisms underlying their effects are poorly understood. This study revealed that the electron transfer pathway participated in nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs)-induced photosynthetic efficiency enhancement (24.29%), resulting in the improvements of apple fruit qualities (soluble sugar content: 11.43%) in the orchard. We also found that N-CDs alleviated mterf5 mutant-modulated photosystem II (PSII) defects, but not psa3 mutant-modulated photosystem I (PSI) defects, suggesting that the N-CDs-targeting sites were located between PSII and PSI. Measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters suggested that plastoquinone (PQ), the mobile electron carrier in the photosynthesis electron transfer chain (PETC), was the photosynthesis component that N-CDs targeted. In vitro experiments demonstrated that plastoquinone-9 (PQ-9) could accept electrons from light-excited N-CDs to produce the reduced plastoquinone 9 (PQH2-9). These findings suggested that N-CDs, as electron donors, offer a PQ-9-involved complement of PETC to improve photosynthesis and thereby fruit quality. Our study uncovered a mechanism by which nanomaterials enhanced plant photosynthesis and provided some insights that will be useful in the design of efficient nanomaterials for agricultural/horticultural applications.

Influence of induced drought on photosynthetic performance in Dactylis glomerata varieties during the early growth stage

Drought significantly impacts the growth and yield of forage grasses, particularly its effect on Dactylis glomerata photosynthetic apparatus during the initial phase of development remains largely unknown. This study investigated the effects of drought on physiological parameters of various D. glomerata varieties. The seedlings obtained after seed germination under optimal and simulated drought conditions by PEG 6000 (three variants) were planted in small pots filled with garden substrate. Over a span of 42 days, the plants were initially kept well-watered (70% capillary water capacity, CWC), after which half of the seedlings from each variant were subjected to drought. This drought stress was applied during the tillering phase for 12 days. Subsequently, the plants were rehydrated (at 70% CWC) and allowed to recover for 14 days. Throughout both drought and recovery periods, measurements were taken. Leaf chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were assessed, and the JIP-test analysis was utilised to provide detailed insights into the functionality of D. glomerata photosynthetic apparatus under drought stress and post-recovery conditions. Several parameters were identified as indicative of the plants’ sensitivity to drought, such as performance indices PI ABS and PI tot, along with quantum yield parameters Ψ E0, φ E0, and φ P0. The results highlighted that var. Minora and Tukan exhibited greater tolerance to water deficit when compared to the other varieties studied. They showed a large increases in PIABS and PItot values after drought stress as well as after the re-watering (recovery period) compared to control plants. This suggests their potential for better adaptation to drought conditions.

Exogenous Silicon Application Improves Chilling Injury Tolerance and Photosynthetic Performance of Citrus

Low-temperature stress is an important limiting factor affecting citrus growth and fruit yields. Therefore, increasing citrus cold stress tolerance may enhance the growth, yield, and quality of citrus production in marginal areas. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of silicon (Si) fertilizer application on cold-tolerance enhancement in citrus. Two citrus cultivars (Delta and Nules) were subjected to Si fertilization (control, 1000 mg L−1) and cold-stress temperature treatments (control and 0 °C for 72 h) using a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial treatment structure with six replications. Leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, such as net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (Tr), internal CO2 concentration (Ci), intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), minimal fluorescence (Fo), maximum fluorescence (Fm), maximum quantum efficiency of PSII primary photochemistry of dark-adapted leaves (Fv/Fm), maximum quantum efficiency of PSII primary photochemistry of dark-/light-adapted leaves (F’v/F’m), electron transport rate (ETR), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), and the relative measure of electron transport to oxygen molecules (ETR/A), were measured. The application of Si drenching to trees that were subsequently exposed to cold stress reduced gs, Tr, and Ci but improved iWUE and Fo in both cultivars compared to the Si-untreated trees. In addition, specific adaptation mechanisms were found in the two citrus species; NPQ and ETR were improved in Si-treated Valencia trees, while A, Fm, and ETR/A were improved in Clementine trees under chilling stress conditions. The current research findings indicate the potential of Si application to enhance cold stress tolerance in citrus, which can provide a strategy for growing citrus in arid and semi-arid regions that may experience cold stress. Overall, after the application of silicon drenching, the cold-sensitive citrus Valencia cultivar became as cold-tolerant as the cold-tolerant Clementine cultivar.

Effects of combined extreme cold and drought stress on growth, photosynthesis, and physiological characteristics of cool-season grasses

Abiotic stress is an important factor affecting turf establishment and limiting the sustainability of the turf industry. To alleviate the effects of combined cold and drought stress in cold- and drought-prone regions, it is essential to select and introduce turfgrass germplasms that are suitable for these conditions for successful turf establishment. Thus, we evaluated the effects of combined extreme cold and drought stress on the morphological, plant leaf functional, photosynthetic, and physiological and biochemical traits of 16 wild annual bluegrass (Poa annua) germplasms. We found that there were significant differences (P < 0.05) among different provenances, combined cold and drought stress, and the main interaction factors. Combined cold and drought stress altered the morphological characteristics of the 16 germplasms to varying degrees. Furthermore, combined cold and drought stress significantly reduced the net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (Tr), instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE), chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, accumulated intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), and relative electrical conductivity (REC) and malondialdehyde (MDA), proline (Pro), soluble protein (SP), soluble sugar (SS), superoxide anion (O2.-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and hydroxyl radical (·OH) and other active oxygen, and increased the superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), peroxidase activity (POD), catalase activity (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase activity (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities. Comprehensive evaluation using principal component analysis (PCA), membership function analysis, and clustered heatmaps indicated that the ‘HZ’ germplasm had stronger combined cold and drought tolerance, whereas the ‘ZQ’ germplasm was more sensitive to combined cold and drought, which was roughly consistent with the order of morphological damage symptoms. Therefore, it is recommended to use the ‘HZ’ germplasm for planting projects in cold- and drought-prone areas, while the ‘ZQ’ germplasm is more suitable for use under warmer and non-water-deficient conditions.

Heliotropium thermophilum adapts to high soil temperature in natural conditions due to its highly active antioxidant system protecting its photosynthetic machinery.

Heliotropium thermophilum (Boraginaceae) plants have strong antioxidant properties. This study investigated the effectiveness of the antioxidant system in protecting the photosynthetic machinery of H. thermophilum . Plants were obtained from Kızıldere geothermal area in Buharkent district, Aydın, Turkey. Plants in the geothermal area that grew at 25-35°C were regarded as the low temperature group, while those that grew at 55-65°C were regarded as the high temperature group. We analysed the physiological changes of these plants at the two temperature conditions at stage pre-flowering and flowering. We meaured the effect of high soil temperature on water potential, malondialdehyde, cell membrane stability, and hydrogen peroxide analysis to determine stress levels on leaves and roots. Changes in antioxidant enzyme activities, ascorbate and chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic gas exchange parameters, and photosynthetic enzymes (Rubisco and invertase) activities were also determined. Our results showed minimal changes to stress levels, indicating that plants were tolerant to high soil temperatures. In general, an increase in antioxidant enzyme activities, ascorbat levels, and all chlorophyll fluorescence parameters except for non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and F v /F m were observed. The pre-flowering and flowering stages were both characterised by decreased NPQ, despite F v /F m not changing. Additionally, there was a rise in the levels of photosynthetic gas exchange parameters, Rubisco, and invertase activities. High temperature did not affect photosynthetic yield because H. thermophilum was found to stimulate antioxidant capacity, which reduces oxidative damage and maintains its photosynthetic machinery in high temperature conditions and therefore, it is tolerant to high soil temperature.

A mathematical model of photoinhibition: exploring the impact of quenching processes

Abstract Plants are constantly exposed to changing environments, sometimes leading to extreme conditions and stress. For example, sudden exposure to high light leads to excess absorbed light energy, causing reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. ROS damages the photosynthetic machinery, particularly the D1 protein in photosystem II (PSII), which, therefore, needs to be continuously repaired and replaced. The effect of the damage inflicted by high light is a prolonged decrease in photosynthetic efficiency. Hence, it is not surprising that photoinhibition has been subject to numerous experimental studies investigating its effects in the context of crop productivity. However, it has become apparent that classical measures of photoinhibition, that is, changes in the chlorophyll fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm, are not only determined by the loss of PSII core function but also by processes such as energy transfer and quenching. Mathematical models can help dissect the influences on such fluorescence signals and quantify the contributions of various interacting mechanisms. We present a mathematical model with a dynamic description of the photosynthetic electron transport chain, non-photochemical quenching and photoinhibition. With our model, we investigate the interconnection among quenching, photoprotection and fluorescence using simulations and experimental data. We found that different energy-dissipating properties of intact and damaged PSIIs, as well as energy transfer between PSIIs, are critical components that need to be included in the model to ensure a satisfactory fit to the experimental data. We envisage that our model provides a framework for future investigations of photoinhibition dynamics and its importance for plant growth and yield.

Yeast Solution Spray and Ozone Gas Fumigation as Methods of Protecting Tomato Plants Against Diseases

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine the effect of ozone fumigation and spraying with microorganisms, i.e. yeast, on selected physiological parameters, and the extent of disease infection of tomato plants. Tomato plants were grown in the ground under covers. Throughout the 2021 and 2022 growing season, the plants were exposed to variable factors, i.e. fumigation with gaseous ozone at a dose of 2 ppm for 1 minute and spraying with yeast. After ozonation and spraying with yeast, physiological measurements were made on tomato plants, such as: selected parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence (maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry) and gas exchange parameters (transpiration rate, stomatal conductivity and intercellular CO2 concentration). In addition, the content of chlorophyll using the SPAD method as well as plant infection by diseases was determined. Compared to the control sample, ozonation resulted in a slight decrease in the physiological parameters of tomato plants. In addition, no visible leaf damage was observed after the ozone gas fumigation process. However, the use of microorganisms did not significantly change the examined physiological parameters. Both after the application of gaseous ozone and microorganisms, a significant impact of the tested variable factors was found on reducing the infection of tomato plants by diseases such as: tomato late blight, tomato alter-nariosis, gray mold, bacterial canker of tomato and bacterial spot of tomato.
