The work of Christopher Lupke, Professor of Chinese Cultural Studies and Chair of East Asian Studies at the University of Alberta, spans modern Chinese fiction, poetry, and cinema. At the same time, he is also a very active translator who tackles some of the most challenging contemporary Chinese poetry. His recent book The Sinophone Cinema of Hou Hsiao-hsien: Culture, Style, Voice, and Motion sheds light on Hou’s revolutionary film aesthetic by foregrounding the cinematic “language” of his films. At the Modern Language Association and other academic organizations for the humanities, Lupke has worked tirelessly to bring about critical reforms that increase the presence and visibility of Chinese and East Asian literary and cultural studies.
