The Development of Straw-Based Biomass Power Generation in Rural Area in Northeast China—An Institutional Analysis Grounded in a Risk Management Perspective

Given a lack of consideration for the role and importance of stakeholders and the importance of stakeholders in the operation of biomass power plants in China, a comprehensive analysis oriented toward stakeholder risk management is needed to further develop the country’s biomass energy industry. Accordingly, we analyzed institutional factors that contribute to or constrain progress in biomass power generation in China. Data were collected from 275 straw suppliers (farmers) living around a biomass power plant, 15 middlemen, five power plant managers, and five local government officers. Interviews were held with all the participants, but questionnaires were additionally administered to the straw suppliers. Results showed that: (1) risk transfer in the biomass supply chain is one of the reasons why farmers are unwilling to supply straw; (2) middlemen are vital intermediaries between biomass power plant managers and farmers as a middleman-based biomass supply system is necessary to guarantee the quantity of straw supply, and; (3) the institutional structure that underlies the Chinese biomass energy industry is immature.

THE PROBLEMS OF CHINA AS A MAJOR CONSUMER OF ENERGY RESOURCES

The high rates of development in China are increasingly indicated the insufficiency of their own energy resources to maintain the positive dynamics of the growth of the national economy. In the absence of structural changes in the Chinese energy industry, exacerbation of the environmental problem is likely to reduce the inflow of foreign direct investment, on which the PRC economy is also mainly dependent. It is justified that with the rapid growth of the Chinese economy, the problems are growing as the obstacle to the further economic development of the country; it is growing the interdependence of the Chinese and world economies, which is a hidden threat to the stability and well-being of the global economy represented by the PRC. Proactive Corporate Environmental Responsibility and Financial Performance: Evidence from Chinese Energy Enterprises

With increasing concerns about environmental issues and the advancement of China’s “going global” strategy, a new issue-proactive corporate social responsibility has emerged. Proactive corporate environmental responsibility refers to business actions that go beyond regulatory requirements for supporting sustainable environmental development. This study examines the role of proactive corporate environmental responsibility on corporate financial performance in the Chinese energy industry by the multi-variables regression analysis of panel data. Using data of 264 firm-year observations from 2009–2014 in the energy industry, the results showed that Proactive corporate environmental responsibility has a positive effect on corporate financial performance passing the endogeneity test. The results also demonstrate that private ownership has stronger promotion on the relationship between proactive corporate environmental responsibility and corporate financial performance. This study helps to increase the body of knowledge about proactive corporate environmental responsibility of the emerging economy, provides insights into the corporate environmental responsibility practice, and government environmental regulation and policy.

A Critical Analysis on Influential Factors on Power Energy Resources in China

China is facing a number of challenges, such as environmental pollution, energy security, and slowing down of economic growth. China's total energy consumption has been leading the worldwide consumption for several years. China's annual primary energy consumption accounts for more than 90% of total energy consumption, and the country's utilization of wind energy, solar energy, biomass energy, and other new form of energy remains very low. This research has adopted a strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis approach to examine the internal and external factors that affect the competitiveness of the energy industry in China. An extensive and critical review of a wide range of literature was conducted, including academic papers, industry reports, statistical data, relevant regulations, and policy documents. Eighteen factors were identified from the literature review. These factors form part of an integrated framework that provides a useful tool for policy makers and the industry to gain a better understanding of the factors that affect the sustainable development of the Chinese energy industry. The results also provide a useful reference for foreign firms that intend to explore the Chinese energy industry market.

The Central Government Behavior Analysis in Development of Chinese New Energy Industry

The purpose of this study is to show the performance of the Central Government in the new energy industry, and to analyze the effect of Central Government’s new energy documents. The essay intends to sum up almost new energy policies from the Central Government. The present study counts the total number of new energy policies, analyzes the distribution frequency of the new energy policies in the national institutions, and sorts out the purpose of the implementation of those new energy policies in order to understand the focus of the Central Government. Meanwhile, using a questionnaire, this essay collects data on evaluation of the public’s satisfaction with the new energy policy and the effect of the implementation of the new energy policy. So, based on a large amount of materials, the authors discuss about China how to promote the application of Central Government policies in this field are benefit to enrich the research materials of this field.

The Local Government Behavior Analysis in Development of Chinese New Energy Industry—Taking Hebei Provincial Government as an Example

China’s new energy industry has been developed rapidly under the support of the government. It is of great practical significance to study the local government’s support for the development of new energy industry in the tax sharing system. The article is through the combination of questionnaire and fuzzy mathematics method to analyze the social public satisfaction with local government’s new energy policy, to provide a better reflection of local government policies to promote the development of new energy industry.

Ecological compensation system and manage countermeasures for coal-fired power plants in China

ABSTRACTThe coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) will become the dominant utilization type of coal in China in the future. The construction and development of CFPPs not only assure the security and sustainability of Chinese energy industry, but also play an important role for practice ecological civilization. However, they also could cause many ecological environment problems, such as destruction of land resources, vegetation deterioration, atmospheric and aquatic pollutions, geological disasters, health of residents etc. So, it is very important for the implementation of ecological compensation at the same time of construction and development of CFPPs. The system framework of ecological compensation was built in this study, based on case of Xilingol CFPPs, Inner Mongolia, China. The definition and connotation of the subject of ecological compensation, relationship of stakeholders and standard of compensation were explained for carrying out ecological compensation of CFPPs smoothly. The existing problems and mange countermeasures for ecological compensation of Xilingol CFPPs were discussed to validating and optimizing the system.

Who reports high company performance? A quantitative study of Chinese listed companies in the energy industry.

In the increasingly competitive environment, top managers’ background characteristics are undoubtedly vital factors for company performance. This study examines whether the performance of Chinese listed companies in the energy industry differs with respect to top managers’ background characteristics and explores the exact distribution interval of top managers’ background characteristics when company performance reaches the highest level. The initial sample was collected from the CSMAR database (2005–2014) for listed companies in the energy industry. After removing the outlier and missing data, the final number of observations was determined as 780. Descriptive statistics were used to investigate the present distribution of top managers’ background characteristics, factor analysis was used to determine the dimensions of company performance, and one-way ANOVA was used to analyze the differences in company performance and its dimensions with respect to top managers’ background characteristics. The findings show that both the age and length of service of top managers present an increasing trend over the years of the study period, whereas the educational level shows no significant changes. The performance of listed companies has three dimensions: profit performance, growth performance, and operating performance. Companies behave differently with regard to their top managers’ background characteristics; when the top manager is 40–45 years old, with a doctoral degree and above, and in the 2nd–3rd year of his service period, his company will achieve a higher level of performance. This study contributes to the growing literature on company performance in the Chinese energy industry by demonstrating the differences in the performance of Chinese listed companies in the energy industry with regard to top managers’ background characteristics, and reaching conclusions on the optimum distribution interval of top managers’ background characteristics when company performance reaches the highest level. This study also provides a valuable reference for organizational reform and performance enhancement, which are urgent problems for the Chinese energy industry.

Effects of energy price fluctuations on industries with energy inputs: An application to China

This article captures the effects of energy price fluctuations on the demand and supply of energy. By focusing on the industries that depend on energy inputs, we are able to apply these effects and analyze the Chinese energy industry. Four main sets of results are presented. First, rising energy prices reduce output and social welfare. Second, the energy industry in China has a vertical market structure, which acts as an amplifier of energy price fluctuations that increase with market power of energy firms. Third, environmental objectives can be achieved through energy price regulation, thereby weakening the market power of energy firms. Interestingly, the formula of price regulation needed to achieve the environmental objectives is given. Finally, entry-level regulation can reduce emissions. In summary, this article supports the concept of energy industry regulation by decision-makers.

Comprehensive assessment of flexibility of the wind power industry chain

A number of energy development plans have been released in China in recent decades. These plans were aimed at promoting the optimization of the Chinese energy industry structure and achieving emission reduction targets by encouraging the development of clean energies such as wind energy. The sustainable development of the clean energy industry chain faces a number of challenges, one of which is the lack of flexibility. This has led to some serious issues associated with clean power industries such as wind power and it is timely to investigate the flexibility of the wind power industry chain to ensure its sustainable development. A hybrid research methodology has been employed in this study to identify most critical factors that affect the flexibility level of the wind power industry chain. These factors are related to seven types of flexibility, i.e. structural flexibility, production flexibility, operational flexibility, technological flexibility, development flexibility, construction flexibility, and policy flexibility. A flexibility assessment index system classified according to upstream, midstream and downstream industry supply chain has been established for the wind power industry chain and a Matter-element extension model was adopted to determine the level of flexibility. The flexibility deviation of the main factors that affect the flexibility of wind power was calculated using sensitivity analysis. The case study suggested that it is feasible to utilize this novel method to evaluate the flexibility of the wind power industry chain. The outcomes of the flexibility analysis provide useful information to assist the decision making process of both government and industry.

The Development Problems and Countermeasures of Chinese New Energy Industry

The development of Chinese new energy industry has very important effects of gravitation, external part and CDM mechanisms. However, this emerging industry is coming across bottleneck, because the implementation of laws and policies are not in place, the tax policy is not clear, the financial subsidies are imperfect, in addition, the science and technology behind are the important factors of restricting the development of Chinese new energy industry. Looking at the whole world, many developed countries aim to seize the commanding heights of the economy in the future, improve the environment, in order to pioneer the development of new energy industries, in which a lot sound policies and advanced technology request us to learn. Therefore, we should implement supportive policies, introduce positive financing policy, expand financing channels, optimize subsidy policy, construct the fiscal policy system that promoting the development of new energy industry, and enhance the capability of the independent innovation.

Study on the Sustainable Development of Chinese Energy Industry Based on the Influencing Factors of Capital Structure

Based on the characteristics of the energy industry, this paper dissects the capital structure status of Chinese energy companies, and then points out the existing problems. The 8-year’s financial data of PetroChina, Sinopec and CNOOC, which are all listed in Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, are selected for empirical analysis, and concluded that, profitability, company size, collateral value of assets and liquidity ratio of assets are negatively correlated to corporate asset-liability ratio, but the growth is positively correlated to it. Finally, this paper provides advices on developing economies of scale, financing, investing and improving corporate financial risk control mechanism.

Development Obstacles of New Energy Industry in China and Countermeasures

With the increasing strain on fossil energy supply and deterioration of the environment caused by fossil energy consumption, improving energy consumption structure and vigorously developing new energy are becoming imperative. In recent years, great progress has been made in Chinese new energy industry development. But the bottleneck occurs at present. Network study of the distribution of talent in the Chinese renewable energy industry

Because of the current energy crisis, researchers and governments pay more attention to new and renewable energy. Renewable energy is a new area of development in China, and thus many talents are attracted to pursue research in these directions with the result that the renewable energy field has an urgent need to understand how the various talents are divided within the field and the statistical findings that can be determined from this. Based on this division and the statistical information it is possible to make decisions on how to plan for the renewable energy field's development in areas, for example, such as resource delivery. To begin with we can create a statistical map of the talents' social network based on the talent carriers and their research directions. Then we use top-k talents to represent the network and divide the network into k parts. Analyzing the properties of a single point's neighbors and the transition probability of these points and those around them, we propose the value of Neighbor Rank (NR). By taking the point's gravity into account we put forward the Gravity Rank (GR). We then combine these 2 models. The experiment not only gives a reasonable result but also the k parts are always the k main areas of the renewable energy field.

Reviews of fluid dynamics researches in wind energy engineering

Great progress has been achieved in the Chinese wind energy industry. By the end of 2012, according to statistics of CWEA, 75 GW capacity of wind power has been generated in China that pushes the country to the top place in the global wind power market. Nowadays, the technology trend focuses on the offshore wind power and the larger multi-megawatt wind turbine. It brings about several engineering challenges and new scientific problems. In this review, we focus on the advances in fluid dynamics researches related to wind energy engineering, such as the wind properties in atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), micrositing at complex terrain, wake flow behind wind turbine, airfoil design for large blade, aerodynamics for wind turbine, aero-elastic interaction, and offshore wind power technology. We also discuss the limitations of the widely-applicated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. Finally, we point out the weakness of Chinese fundamental researches on winder energy engineering, and provide some suggestions.

Analysis of the Existent Problem and the Policy Suggestions for Chinese New Energy Industry

After the Financial Crisis, to stave off recession, the United States, the European Union enacted and promulgated a series of policies, those developed countries not only put forward the development of new energy industry as avery important national economic strategy but also make the relevant laws and regulations and policies to ensure a favorable environment for new energy industry. In such a new situation, our country is vigorously promoting the development of new energy sources. But we also meet some problems in the process of develop. This paper discuss the issues regarding the policies and capital bottleneck that appears on the development of new energy industry, calls upon the Government to implement relevant policies of new energy industry as soon as possible and make effort to support the industry development

Ethical Values and Environmentalism in China: Comparing Employees from State-Owned and Private Firms

Industrial pollution is of both national and international concern in the context where one country’s emissions contribute to the problem of global warming. Existing studies have focused on government and regulations rather than on employees. The context of this study is in respect of 472 workers in seven Chinese energy companies in Shanxi province in China, one of the biggest coal mining regions and a region most responsible for environmental pollution. The key findings are two-fold: first, employees’ values were positively correlated with attitudes toward the environment, which also correlates with perceived corporate citizenship; second, the ownership type of the firm had a significant influence on corporate citizenship, employee values and their attitudes toward environment. Contrary to existing beliefs, State-owned enterprises in China have much poorer ratings on all the three constructs compared to privately owned companies. The results highlight the role of the government and policy makers in shaping employees’ attitudes toward the environment, and in turn the corporate citizenship of the Chinese energy industry.
