Contextual Teaching Strategies in the Grammar Instruction of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Against the backdrop of globalization, the international status of the Chinese language has been increasingly elevated. However, its unique grammatical features pose significant challenges to non-native learners. Traditional grammar instruction focuses on the impartation of grammatical rules, neglecting the application of language in authentic contexts, which affects the accuracy of learners' Chinese communication. This paper analyzes the theoretical basis and practical application of contextual teaching strategies, demonstrating their significant advantages in improving the effectiveness of Chinese grammar instruction: they can promote the internalization and transfer of learners' language knowledge and enhance their cross-cultural communication skills. By analyzing the current implementation of these strategies, the paper profoundly analyzes the challenges faced in teaching, including the limitations of existing textbooks, the difficulty of teachers' preparation, and the constraints of classroom teaching time. It also proposes corresponding countermeasures and suggestions to support the practice and research of Chinese grammar instruction.

面向华裔学生的“听说+读写”中文教学模式探析——以印尼共同希望语言学院2023级大专班为例

<div><p>Teaching model is one of the key factors to improve teaching quality. In view of the tendency of the current international Chinese teaching model to focus on structure and knowledge, but not on pragmatics and ability, the Chinese Language and Literature College of Jinan University in China has innovated a set of "listening and speaking + reading and writing" Chinese teaching model. This model focuses on the mutual coordination of "listening and speaking" and "reading and writing", aiming to quickly improve students' Chinese communication ability. This model has been first practiced overseas at the Common Hope Language School in Indonesia. This article mainly introduces the model and the teaching steps of the listening and speaking class in this model, and uses the students' actual grades to demonstrate the feasibility of this teaching model. The study shows that after about 6 months of intensive study in this model, students' Chinese listening and speaking ability has made significant progress. This model helps to improve the listening and speaking ability of Chinese beginners in a short period of time.<strong></strong></p></div>

A Study on the Impact of European Countries' Digital Economy Development on China's Export of Communication Equipment into Europe

On the basis of combing relevant literature, this paper collects policy and data information, analyzes the status of European digital economy development and the development process and export status of China's communication equipment, this paper finds two theoretical explanation mechanisms combining product life cycle theory and consumer demand theory, which proves the correlation between the development of European digital economy and the export of Chinese communication equipment to Europe.

Chinese Adaptation -- Challenges and Opportunities for Chinese Students Studying in US

The U.S. Department of State and the non-profit organization Association for International Education released the Open Doors report on Monday (13), showing that the number of international students in the U.S. higher education system reached 1.057 million in the 2022-23 academic year, an increase of nearly 12 percent over the previous year.[1] This is the most significant annual increase in more than 40 years, with Chinese students reaching as high as 289,500. Amid the wave of globalization, more and more Chinese students are choosing to study in the United States to pursue higher educational standards and broader development opportunities. Nowadays, many recruiting companies judge international students' ability and various indicators based on QS or US NEWS, so entering a highly-ranked American university has become a basic need for many international students. This article will explore the pros and cons of the Chinese communication style for Chinese students in the United States, emphasizing the urgent need for international students to adapt to the American social and academic environment to navigate and integrate successfully.

Application of ChatGPT in “Chinese + Vocational Skills” Education from the Perspective of Interaction Theory

In recent years, driven by globalization and the Belt and Road Initiative, international Chinese education faces an urgent demand to cultivate talents who possess both vocational skills and Chinese communication abilities. The emergence of artificial intelligence technologies, particularly generative pre-trained models like ChatGPT, presents new possibilities for “Chinese + Vocational Skills” education. However, its application encounters challenges such as technological accessibility, data biases, and high user demands. To address these issues, this study, based on interaction theory, explores the prospects of ChatGPT in “Chinese + Vocational Skills” education, along with the challenges and corresponding recommendations. This paper aims to discuss how the application of ChatGPT in vocational Chinese education can bring opportunities for educational digital transformation, effectively enhance education quality, and foster talents capable of meeting global demands.

Fandom as Method: Decolonising Research on Social Media Communications Through Chinese Transnational Fandoms of a Japanese Olympic Figure Skater

This paper focuses on international sports personality in figure staking Yuzuru Hanyu, who plays for Japan, and his transnational fandoms in China, to examine the politicisation of his evolving fandom during and after his performance at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Our contribution is to illustrate the value of analysing fandoms in the Chinese social media as a method that seeks to advance a decolonised approach to communication studies. This study uses digital ethnography to collect data and conducts critical thematic analysis to illustrate the complexity of socially mediated fandom debates and flames. Consulting interdisciplinary literature in sports fandom and communication, athletic branding, and political communication, we propose a fresh critical approach to Chinese communication studies, which we have conceptualised as “fandom as method.” We offer a case study to illustrate this critical approach, which we argue is a contribution to decolonising scholarship by promoting inclusivity of alternative approaches, in communication studies in the global south. “Fandom as method” can excavate new terrain, rather than simply adding to West-centric theoretical advances. Findings underscore that critically analysing the complex interplay between fans, anti-fans, and the authorities through “fandom as method” can reveal previously undetected communication patterns. More importantly, fandom as method can help us interrogate the nuances of communications situated within complex, dynamic, evolving patriotic and nationalistic social media discourses. This approach helps to explicate opaque clashes of “mainstremeist belief and action” in the name of patriotism and nationalism which, in the Chinese context, are subject to intervention from the authorities as the ultimate other. It reveals how social media activity politicises a sports personality, a fandom trend that seems likely to spill over into other spheres of the entertainment industry.

ETHICAL ASPECTS OF BUSINESS COMMUNICATION AND MANAGEMENT IN CHINESE BUSINESS

The relevance of the article's topic is that the diversity of national business cultures requires research and consideration of managerial peculiarities in different regions and countries. These peculiarities are determined by historical, religious, climatic and other factors that are formed under the influence of a particular social environment, country or region. Understanding these value systems and cultural differences in the communication behaviour of people from different countries contributes to the efficiency of management, helps to solve problem situations and avoid conflicts during negotiations. The purpose of the study is to examine the cross-cultural aspects of communication and management in Chinese business with a Ukrainian perspective. This includes analysing the main cultural differences between Ukrainians and Chinese, determining the importance of aspects such as language, etiquette, hierarchy and business customs that may affect the effectiveness of communication and management in Chinese business with Ukrainian entrepreneurs. The cross-cultural aspects of communication and management in the Chinese economic environment are a very important topic for research. Recent publications in this area reveal important differences in the way Chinese businesses communicate and manage compared to the West. The concept of “guanxi” is the main principle among Chinese entrepreneurs and requires careful understanding and application. One of the fundamental approaches in the Chinese business environment is to maintain harmonious relationships with partners and customers. This article discusses how successful Chinese companies invest a lot of time and effort in maintaining these mutually beneficial relationships, which helps them succeed in the long run. The role of communication in Chinese business is important. Research shows that closed, non-verbal communication can be very important in the context of Chinese communication and management. The article describes the cross-cultural aspects of communication and management in Chinese business. The article emphasises the importance of understanding cultural differences in business communication and management for successful work in Chinese business. The article analyses the peculiarities of interpersonal relations, communication strategies and approaches to personnel management. The study is aimed at improving the effectiveness of communication in the management system and contributes to the enhancement of intercultural understanding in this context

The linguistic and cultural script "tea drinking" in Chinese communication

The article explores the cultural significance of tea drinking in Chinese communication by studying the corresponding linguistic and cultural script. The historical context and the current state of Chinese tea culture is considered; the language used to describe the tea drinking process, including individual lexemes, phrases and idiomatic expressions, is analyzed. Also, the article explores the norms of etiquette and traditions associated with tea drinking. A brief overview of tea idioms in the Chinese language reflecting the linguistic and cultural value of tea drinking is provided. The conclusion is made about the high importance of the considered linguistic and cultural script in Chinese culture, as well as the need to introduce this linguistic and cultural component into the process of teaching Chinese to foreign students. The subject of the study is linguistic and cultural scripts relevant within the framework of Chinese linguoculture using the example of the script "tea party". The novelty of the study lies in the fact that it provides a multidimensional analysis of the linguistic and cultural script "Tea Party" in Chinese linguoculture. In particular, the specialized tea vocabulary, phraseological units, as well as etiquette replicas that are related to tea drinking in Chinese linguoculture are considered. In Chinese culture, there is a complex and interesting tea etiquette to study. The linguistic and cultural script "Tea Party" in the framework of Chinese culture consists of three parts: the preamble of the event, the event and the result of the event. The preamble of the event includes a greeting and an order for tea (the latter is relevant if the tea party takes place in a tea room). An event (i.e., a tea party) involves brewing tea and drinking tea. The latter usually goes without words, because in Chinese culture it is customary to turn off all possible stimuli for the sake of enjoying a tea drink. Besides, the important part is gratitude for a good tea. The result of the event is the payment of the bill (if it happens in a tea shop) and farewell at the end of the tea party.

Analyzing Opportunities and Challenges in Sino-Korean Collaboration within the Intelligent Operation and Maintenance Sector Amid China’s Telecommunications Boom

This study examines the development of the Chinese communications industry and the status of cooperation between China and Korea in smart operations and maintenance (O&M). It highlights China’s rapid advancements in network infrastructure, communication revenue, and cellular IoT users, offering new opportunities for Sino-Korean collaboration in smart O&M. However, challenges such as technology gaps, standards differences, and cultural barriers exist. Strategies proposed include promoting technology exchange, joint R&D, standard harmonization, and market expansion. Despite limitations in data availability and challenge analysis, this study aims to inform policymakers, corporate decision-makers, and industry experts to address challenges and promote sustainable development in the communication industry. Future research will integrate quantitative studies to identify key challenges objectively and aid stakeholders in clarifying management priorities.

Dear Leader!: A Look at (In)directness in Online Complaints in China

The rise of e-government services has led to an increase in citizens interacting with the government online. However, not much about the nature of citizen complaints on such administrative platforms is known. The few previous studies have shown that due to politeness considerations, Chinese communication is often indirect in power-asymmetrical settings. This study examines citizen complaint posts on an online e-service platform in China, exploring the linguistic directness and politeness of those posts. Using a qualitative method, 300 citizen complaint posts were analyzed, with the findings revealing that: a) traditional markers of politeness were not extensively used in the opening and closing of complaint posts despite their inherently face-threatening nature; b) citizens communicated directly with the government, expressing a high level of directness in complaint posts; c) despite finding (b), complaint components were not in general perceived as impolite. The paper argues that Chinese communication is not always indirect, particularly in online situations where there is a power imbalance. In such cases, citizens sporadically use traditional politeness markers such as politeness strategies, specific types of speech act components, and avoidance of expressions of negative emotions. Interestingly, the study found that citizens focused more on avoiding Component B (i.e. dissatisfaction/disapproval) in complaints and formalizing complaint components, rather than relying on traditional politeness strategies to express politeness. In this online administrative context, direct citizen-to-government (C2G) communication is transaction-oriented and instrumental in nature. This paper provides some insight into Chinese pragmatics and practical guidelines for citizens to make successful and efficient complaints in an online administrative context.

A Conversation Analytic Study on Clicks in Mandarin Chinese

From the perspective of Conversation Analysis, this paper analyzes clicks in daily Chinese communication. Data analysis shows that clicks generally appear in negative contexts and play an important role in conveying the speaker’s negative attitudes or feelings. This article first discusses the main ways that the linguistic resource of clicks helps the speaker convey his/her negative attitudes: presupposing the click-producer’s disdain, presupposing the speaker’s dissatisfaction, presupposing the speaker’s impatience, and strengthening the speaker’s negative attitude. On this basis, the author explores the main two functions of clicks in Chinese conversation, that is serving as a signal of topic transition and maintaining harmonious social relations.

How do inventors overcome the relational inertia after inter‐firm mobility?

This study aims to explore strategies for overcoming relational inertia and enhancing their creativity after inter‐firm mobility of inventors. The research sample comprises 591 mobile inventors identified using a patent data‐based model from Chinese communication technology companies. Employing the framework of dynamic network analysis, this study examines the impact of network closure at different time on overcoming relational inertia and investigates the influence of knowledge structure. The findings suggest that a lower level of past and current network closure is more conducive to knowledge sharing and technological innovation after inter‐firm mobility of inventors. Furthermore, mobile inventors with broad and in‐depth knowledge structures demonstrate significantly improved knowledge sharing and technological innovation, effectively mitigating relational inertia. These conclusions offer a systematic research perspective and comprehensive theoretical guidance, emphasizing the importance of optimizing network resources and knowledge structures to help inventors overcome relational inertia after inter‐firm mobility.

The Application of Internet Neurologisms and Neurologisms in Advanced Chinese Listening and Speaking Course - Based on the Network in Recent Five Years

Nowadays, language life is very prosperous, and a large number of new online words and phrases continue to emerge. These new words are an important way for international students to understand Chinese culture and improve their Chinese communication skills. The Chinese listening and speaking class integrates listening and speaking training, and is an important course type for cultivating the oral communication skills of international students in Chinese. Therefore, in teaching Chinese listening and speaking as a foreign language, we must pay attention to the use of new words and phrases on the internet.On the basis of previous research on teaching new words and phrases on the internet, this article investigates and analyzes the acquisition of new words and phrases by advanced stage international students, starting from the characteristics of new words and phrases on the internet. Through analysis, this article finds that there are some problems in the teaching of online new words and phrases. Therefore, teaching suggestions are proposed from three aspects: setting teaching objectives, selecting teaching content, and exploring teaching methods, in order to provide a certain teaching reference for the teaching of online new words and phrases in advanced listening and speaking classes.

Comprehending of the 2018-2020 New Chinese Vocabulary among International Students in China

Learning new Chinese vocabulary beyond the HSK (Global Chinese Proficiency Examination) vocabulary syllabus will improve Chinese communication ability for international students in China. This study addresses the vocabulary learning problems including insufficient systematic understanding of vocabulary features, lack of in-depth learning methods and the lack of contextual application. This study investigates the respondents’ level of comprehending the 2018-2020 New Chinese Vocabulary, and explores their learning problems, as well as proposes suitable vocabulary learning strategies for them. The samples included 30 international students from Yangzhou University, Guangxi Normal University and Bohai University in China. The results from the online questionnaire indicate that the students' comprehension of these new vocabulary has improved in the context-provided assessment. In terms of problems, 90% of the respondents were unable to infer the meaning of new vocabulary based on existing knowledge. Besides, students with better understanding generally use context strategies and coding strategies more than other students. This study puts forward suggestions on the vocabulary learning strategies to help international students learn Chinese vocabulary better.

Chinese Smartphones: China’s Image Boosting Tools in Central Asia

Despite Chinese smartphone vendors’ track record in successfully developing and selling communication technologies to the Global South, the potential of Chinese communication technologies to boost the China’s image remains underexplored in academic literature. Drawing on the responses from focus groups and individual interviews conducted with the wider public in Almaty, Bishkek, Dushanbe and Tashkent in 2022, this article will contribute to our understanding of China’s image in Central Asia and the role of Chinese smartphones in this regard. I find that competitive pricing, localised marketing, and corporate social responsibility have so far helped Chinese smartphone vendors to improve the Central Asian public’s attitudes towards Chinese technologies and China more broadly.

A Pragmatic Study of Euphemisms

There are significant differences between Chinese and Western cultures, particularly in terms of communication styles. Westerners tend to be more direct in their way of speaking, often expressing their intentions in a straightforward manner. In contrast, Chinese people, influenced by their traditional culture, tend to speak in a more indirect and roundabout way. They are accustomed to expressing their ideas and purposes in a euphemistic manner. Chinese speakers typically begin with a prelude, using indirect language to convey their true intentions. They then gradually transition to the main topic, unraveling the mystery step by step. This roundabout way of speaking is why euphemisms are commonly used in Chinese communication. The use of euphemisms is preferred by people from various backgrounds for several reasons. Euphemisms allow individuals to avoid the bluntness of direct expression, creating a more comforting atmosphere for communication. They also take into consideration the feelings and emotions of the listener, maintaining the dignity of all parties involved in the conversation. Furthermore, the use of euphemisms contributes to enhancing the quality and efficiency of communication. By exploring the pragmatic function of euphemisms, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the underlying meanings behind the words. This understanding allows for the mastery of appropriate communication skills and facilitates effective communication. In this article, the author will analyze the pragmatic meaning of euphemisms from three perspectives: the avoidance function, the politeness function, and the concealment function. This analysis will be supplemented with specific cases to reveal the pragmatic significance of euphemisms and enhance the readers’ comprehension of their usage.

Mainstream Traditional Chinese Culture Reflections from a Globalisation Perspective

With the rapid development of the world economy, cross-cultural communication is increasing rapidly. However, due to the different cultural backgrounds, historical backgrounds and values of different countries, cross-cultural communication also presents some differences. Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism is the core of traditional Chinese culture, and even more so, it forms the basis of traditional Chinese culture, shaping and influencing the concepts of thinking and spirit of Chinese culture in a broader sense, as well as subconsciously influencing the thinking and actions of the Chinese people. The three words Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism refer to Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism respectively. Confucianism is the Way of Confucius and Mencius, which regulates the social and human order, and is the way to tell people how to achieve natural and harmonious interactions in real life. Taoism is Laozhuang, the pursuit of selflessness. Buddhism is Zen Buddhism, represented by wisdom, which tells people how to be self-interested and altruistic.This article aims to explore the influence of traditional Chinese cultural concepts on the concept of self-reflection and life, death and fortune in Chinese communication from the aspect of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.

Deep learning-based fault diagnosis and localization method for fiber optic cables in communication networks

Abstract With the arrival of the big data era and the development of new network technology, how to use big data technology to diagnose and locate fiber optic cable faults in communication networks has become a hot topic of current concern. Firstly, a combined generative adversarial network and convolutional neural network algorithm is proposed based on a deep learning algorithm, then an improved fault diagnosis model combining generative adversarial network and convolutional neural network algorithm is built, and finally, the combined generative adversarial network and convolutional neural network model is used to verify and analyze the fiber optic cable fault diagnosis. The results show that the accuracy of the DCGAN-CNN algorithm for fiber optic cable fault diagnosis is 98.5%, and the research results verify the effectiveness of the combined generative adversarial network and convolutional neural network model for fiber optic cable fault diagnosis. This study can accurately and comprehensively solve the problem of fiber optic cable faults in communication networks and thus play a guiding reference value for developing fault diagnosis in Chinese communication networks.

Chinese Listening and Speaking Classroom Research base on Framework of Multimodal Interactive Analysis

With the advent of the information age, people's communication behavior tends to be multimodal. The new communication mode puts forward new requirements for Chinese listening and speaking classroom teaching. Under the background of globalization, more and more foreign-funded enterprises set up overseas factories in China and send employees to China to provide technical support. In order to meet the needs of employees’ life and business in China, many companies provide Chinese language training for their employees. Chinese listening and speaking courses, which can effectively improve the level of Chinese communication, have become the main type of courses. Taking the multi-level and multi-modal interactive framework as the research framework, this paper analyzes and studies the Chinese listening and speaking class with examples, and explores the effective combination path of Chinese listening and speaking class and multi-modal interactive teaching mode. It is found that the use of reasonable modal configuration, ensuring the main role of high-intensity modes and ensuring the principal position of students in the teaching process can improve teaching efficiency, increase students' concentration time and effectively improve students' listening and speaking skills.
