A comparative study of diagnostic potential and efficiency of six scoring systems applied to children's figure drawings

Examiner sex and sexual differentiation in preschool children's figure drawings.

Summary The figure drawings of 939 disadvantaged preschool children were examined for observable sexual differentiation. There were no significant boy-girl differences in the proportion of same sex figures (about 16%) obtained by male examiners; however, 44% of the older girls but only 18% of the older boys tested by females drew same sex figures.

ACTIVITY LEVEL AND INTELLECTUAL FUNCTIONING IN NORMAL PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

In this study, the ability to inhibit motor movement is distinguished from a more generalized low activity level. It is argued that the former should be functional for problem-solving while the latter should not. With a sample of 42 nursery-school children, measures were taken of activity level during free play, of inhibition of motor movement, of IQ, and of performance on the Children's Embedded Figures Test. Scores on inhibition of movement proved to be positively correlated with the measures of intellectual ability, while general activity scores were not.

Sex-Role Preference in Children: Methodological Problems

Recently, Lefkowitz (9) concludes that, when confronted with a direct choice, have about as much preference for the feminine sex role as boys have for the masculine role. This conclusion contrasts with findings of several studies (3, 4, 5, 6 , 7, 8, 10) utilizing the I t Scale for Chldren ( 2 ) : boys expressed a much stronger preference for the masculine role than girls showed for the feminine role; the majority of boys but only a minority of girls expressed sex-appropriate preference. The Scale indirectly measures sex role preference via use of a stick drawing of a child's figure called It, not structured as to sexual identity, for which S is asked to make choices. In connection wich the above contrasting procedures and findings, Lefkowitz raises an important question relative to the It figure. Despite effort made to depict this figure as sexually neuter, Lefkowicz suggests that the majority of girls and practically all boys see It as masculine rather than feminine and, hence, the predominant masculine preference expressed by both girls and boys simply reflects this perception. This question has been raised by others (5, 6, 7, 8, 1 1 There is now substantial supporting evidence. Notwithstanding the inadequacy of It as a sexually neutral figure, the explanation of the basis fcr It usually being seen as male, at least by older children, is an interesting problem, i.e., is the It figure objectively more masculine or is it simply that, acking specific sex traits as such, children tend to see It as masculine? There may be sufficient ground for assuming that, in our traditionally masculine-oriented culture, any human figure not clearly structured as female will tend to be seen as male. The following observations seem relevant: 1. The term man is used to refer not only to the male sex but, also in a generic sense, to humans, both male m d female, i.e., mankind. 2. Girls are allowed to dress like and look like boys in our culture but not vice versa; this is humorously seen in the following conversation:
