This investigation grew out of a study of retardation in the schools of several cities in northern Michigan in which it was dis covered that the amount of retardation varied among children of different nationalities. Since the pupils of all nationalities had the same teachers and were pursuing the same course of study, it was evident that there must be some underlying cause of the difference in retardation. Accordingly, it was decided to give intelligence tests to a considerable number of each nationality to determine whether or not the differences in retardation might be the result of differences in intelligence. At the present time 913 children whose parents were born in foreign countries have been given intelligence tests.
