Pain is one of the most common reasons for inpatient hospital admissions and ambulatory visits, and appropriate pain management has been identified and discussed as one of the most salient variables in patient satisfaction. However adequate awareness, understanding, education, assessment and treatment of pain remains a challenge throughout institutions nationwide. Multiple different teams throughout hospitals manage pain, often with different methods, even when the etiology of pain is similar. Children's Hospital Colorado developed an interdisciplinary Pain Steering Committee to serve as a resource and oversight group to assist with unification and standardization of hospital-wide pain related issues. Within this model, Pain Steering Committee members meet monthly to promote use of evidence based practice, and to develop or revise policies and education related to pain. Efforts are made to bring the expertise of Pain Steering Committee members to staff via an electronic hub (email), which is checked weekly and disseminated to Committee members for response. Pain Steering Committee also manages additional campaigns to reach hospital staff via annual activities such as Pain Awareness Month education. During this effort, Pain Steering Committee members utilize multiple methods to provide education to physicians and medical trainees, nursing, and other healthcare providers throughout the hospital to facilitate quality pain awareness and management. Core members of the Pain Steering Committee are staff who have particular interest or expertise in pediatric pain management and includes members from the Pain Management Service, Oncology, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Regulatory. Pain Steering Committee structure also provides direct links to inpatient medical directors, ambulatory leadership, and quality and education. The Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, and the Chair of Anesthesiology and Pain Management are executive sponsors to provide hospital leadership support, and help facilitate system-wide change.
