Recommended nomenclature for solvent extraction (liquid-liquid distribution)

Recommendations are presented for nomenclature in solvent extraction chemistry and processes including definitions, preferred symbols, and comments on the acceptability or otherwise of certain terms and their use in particular situations. An attempt has been made to generalize the definitions to include any system of two immiscible liquid phases.

Solvent extraction in analytical chemistry and separation science.

Solvent extraction has long enjoyed a well-deserved position of prominence among anlytical chemists as a powerful separation technique applicable both to trace and macro levels of materials. Solvent extraction chemistry has developed in a most dramatic way in the last quarter of a century. Work in this area has not only provided the basis for a rich store of analytical methodology characterized by high sensitivity and selectivity, but has also illuminated many fundamental aspects of a wide variety of inorganic coordination complex reactions. Because of the great range of concentrations from weightless trace levels of carrier-free radioisotopes to the macro levels of several weight per cent of metal ions in which quantitative separations by solvent extraction is applicable, this technique is equally useful in both analytical and preparative, e.g. process scale, modes. The continuing vigor of this interesting field is attested by the continuing high publication rate of research reports from active groups throughout the world (about 1000 papers annually). It is not daring to predict that much innovative and fruitful research in both fundamental and applied research will be conducted in the next decade or two.Despite the great variety of extraction systems it is possible to describe every extraction by a simple, three step scheme (Table 1).

The meaning of slope analysis in solvent extraction chemistry: The case of zinc extraction by trilaurylammonium chloride

By using suitable equations, which are derived by treating the extraction of a metal complex in the general form pMY n + q RY ⇌ (RY) q(MY n) p (with MY n extractable species, RY extracting agent, (RY) q(MY n) p complex formed by the extraction reaction, with the bar indicating organic phase species), the physical meaning obtained by the slope analysis of extraction data (logarithmic plot of distribution coefficient vs. extractant concentration) has been discussed. The experimental case of distribution data obtained by extracting ZnCl 2 with a benzene solution of trilaurylammonium chloride in a wide range of metal and extractant concentration has been treated.

INDIRECT DETERMINATION OF MERCURY BY ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROPHOTOMETRY USING ZINC HOLLOW CATHODE LAMP

Abstract An indirect atomic absorption spectrophotometric method for mercury has been developed on the basis of solvent extraction chemistry. Mercury(II) was converted into a bromo-complex anion and extracted into 1,2-dichloroethane with the 2,2′-bipyridyl-zinc chelate cation. The resulting zinc in the extract, which was equivalent to a specific amount of mercury, was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The sensitivity for the determination of mercury could be enhanced to the level of zinc by the proposed method.

A systematic study of the basic chemistry of solvent extraction of metals by organophosphorus compounds carried out in JAERI is reported. As for the general study, thermodynamic and structural chemical approaches were employed.The thermodynamical treatment of the distribution equilibrium measurement was carried out rather precisely to analyse the mechanism of solvent extraction. This was applied to determine the compositions of the complexes formed and the chemical reactions underlying.Further, it was shown the competition of metal and proton acid could clearly explain the extraction behaviors in these systems.The spectroscopic measurements of the solvents were conducted. Especially, in the infra-red region, the shift of the P=0 vibrational spectra of the solvent and the splitting of the NO3 vibrational spectra of the nitrate ions gave very powerful measures to study the microscopic mechanism of complex formation between the solvent and the species extracted.The thermodynamic and structural chemical approaches carried out were turned out to be in good accord and complementary.
