Short Notices

THE wide use of organic chemicals as industrial solvents has introduced certain complications, including a possible danger to health. Whilst the solvents are perfectly safe when used under proper conditions, their misuse, particularly over a continued period, may lead to trouble. There has been no definite knowledge as to which of the many compounds may be suspected before use, and thus a clear need for research into the possible effects of every material that seemed open to suspicion. The subject is receiving study at the instance of the Association of British Chemical Manufacturers and the Home Office, which have referred the medical questions to a special committee of the Medical Research Council.

TWENTY-ONE years of activity were reviewed by the chairman, Mr. Eben Wallace, at the annual general meeting, held on October 14, of the Association of British Chemical Manufacturers, which was formally incorporated on December 28, 1916. The initial membership was 110 firms, representing a capital of £39,000,000, whereas now, although the actual membership has not shown any great increase, the capital represented is more than £200,000,000. The Association's directory, "British Chemicals and their Manufacturers", was first published in 1919, and a new edition has since been issued every second year. 1920 saw the formation of the British Chemical Plant Manufacturers' Association, whilst in 1927 the Association's Works Technical Committee commenced its work on safety in the chemical industries. Other activities have been concerned with fiscal matters, with the setting up of standards, with the organization of exhibitions, with the incidence of legislation, and, generally, with the promotion of co-operation within and around the industry. The annual report refers to the Association's activities, during the year ended May 31 last, in relation to the new Factories Act and other legislation, to the work of the Import Duties Advisory Committee, to commercial treaties, to safety measures, to the fund which the chemical industry has established in support of chemical publications and library facilities, to transport, and to various other relevant matters. Dr. F. H. Carr was elected president of the Association,, and Mr. E. V. Evans and Mr. R. Duncalfe respectively chairman and vice-chairman of the council.

British Chemical Manufacturers

REPORTING on its activities during the year ended May 31, 1936, the Association of British Chemical Manufacturers justly claims to have rendered substantial assistance to an industry which is one of our most important national assets. It is concerned with the organization of displays of British goods, such as that provided by the British Industries Fair, with legislation and the incidence of taxation, with commercial treaties with foreign countries, with the Ottawa agreements and means for stimulating trade within the Empire, with transport, safety precautions, and in fact with any problem relating to the industry other than questions involving wages, hours and conditions of work. There is, however, much still to be done, and the Association is anxious to realize that expansion of services which would be rendered possible by an increase in its membership to include every chemical manufacturer in Great Britain. In his speech at the annual general meeting held on October 8, the chairman referred to the successful outcome of many of the enterprises which the Association has undertaken in the interests of its members, including in his survey a reference to the measures which are being undertaken to protect our factories against air attacks in the unfortunate event of war. The Association has also participated in investigations concerning the detection of toxic gases in industry. It is announced that the first pamphlet of the series, that dealing with hydrogen sulphide, will shortly be published by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Dr. E. F. Armstrong was re-elected president for the coming year.
