Facial aesthetics are important in both social and professional settings. The replacement of missing teeth should never be the exclusive goal of prosthetic rehabilitation for a patients who has lost all of their teeth. Age-related changes to the face, particularly sagging cheeks, are a worry for total denture patients with high aesthetic demands. Hence, this article outlines a straightforward, rational, reasonably priced, and non-invasive technique for creating a non-detachable cheek plumper for individuals without teeth. Also, the dual-purpose prosthesis not only restores facial aesthetics, but also replaces missing teeth. CPD/Clinical Relevance: A technique for creating a non-detachable cheek plumper for individuals without teeth is described.

Management of Sunken Cheeks in Complete Denture Patient Using Detachable Plastic Construction Toy (Cheek Plumper)

ABSTRACT Esthetics play a very important role in dentistry. In the absence of teeth, the alveolar ridges resorb, causing the facial muscles to lose support, resulting in diminished facial muscle tone, and a slumped cheek. The authors present here a case of a 54-year-old male patient who reported missing upper and lower teeth. An intraoral examination revealed completely edentulous maxillary and mandibular arches. On extraoral examination, the cheeks were sunken, and the skin was wrinkled. For the patient, a complete denture with removable cheek plumpers was advised due to his hollow cheeks. This method accurately determines the space available for cheek plumpers.

Facial aesthetics is of utmost importance in person’s life. Aging is associated with loss of teeth, residual ridge resorption and reduced tonicity of the facial muscles, leading to an unesthetic appearance and sunken cheeks in some individuals. Aesthetics in such individuals seeking complete dentures can be improved with the help of cheek plumper by supporting and lifting the cheeks. This article describes an innovative, simple, cost-effective attachment system made by modifying the casted sprue as mode of attachment in completely edentulous patient requiring complete denture prostheses with detachable cheek plumper.

A Novel In-built Design to Retain Detachable Cheek Plumpers in Complete Dentures: A Case Report

Aesthetics is of prime importance to people irrespective of age. Aging and loss of teeth have a significant influence on external facial aesthetics, resulting in sunken cheeks and undesirable facial appearance. Cheek plumper is a prosthesis used to support sunken cheeks, thus enhancing the aesthetics of a person. Hereby, the authors present a case of a 65-year-old male patient, who reported with the complaint of missing upper and lower teeth. Intraoral examination revealed completely edentulous maxillary and mandibular arches. Extraoral examination revealed sunken cheeks. The patient was concerned about his appearance and wanted treatment for it. The treatment plan was to fabricate a complete denture with detachable cheek plumpers. This novel technique offers a simple and effective way to re-establish the lost facial aesthetics. The technique was simple, easy to fabricate and had good patient satisfaction, compared to the other techniques and methods. Follow-up after 24 hours, three months and six months was scheduled and the patient was satisfied with the prosthesis.

Detachable Cheek Plumper Using Orthodontic Lingual Button For Improved Denture Esthetics: A Clinical Technique

Following loss of teeth and residual ridge resorption, facial esthetics is highly affected. The rehabilitation of lost structures should not be only aimed at replacing the lost teeth but facial changes associated with the edentulism should also be addressed. Objective of this technique article was aimed to improvise the excessive shrunken cheek appearance through fabrication of customized detachable cheek plumper. In this article, a novel, simple and easy technique has been described to fabricate a detachable cheek plumper for the management of shrunken cheek appearance using modified orthodontic lingual button and elastic tooth separator. Following fabrication of detachable cheek plumper and insertion, shrunken cheek appearance was improved and overall facial esthetic was enhanced. Cheek plumpers are simple to make and offer a noninvasive and cost-effective option for patients with sunken cheeks who want to improve their facial look. Patient’s aesthetics and psychological well-being benefit from this treatment. The use of detachable cheek plumper improves patient comfort, resulting in higher acceptance of the prosthesis.

Facial esthetics is an integral part of dental treatment. Edentulous patient are increasingly demanding improvement in esthetics at the end of treatment. The edentulous state is associated with loss of teeth, resorbed alveolar ridge, reduced muscle tonicity, and hollow cheeks. Complete denture treatment includes not only the replacement of missing teeth but also the restoration of facial appearance. In individuals with marked resorption of the alveolar process, conventional dentures fail to provide adequate support; necessitating additional support for the cheeks. This can be done using cheek plumper or cheek lifting appliances. This article has described a simple, effective and non-invasive treatment alternative to improve facial appearance in a completely edentulous patient using undetachable light weighted hollow vaccum sheet formed plumper prosthesis.

Detachable Hollow Cheek Plumper with Salivary Reservoir – An Innovative Method to Improve Esthetics and Function in a Conventional Complete Denture

The feeling of dryness in the mouth is referred to as xerostomia. Multiple factors can lead to xerostomia ranging from physiologic conditions like aging, to radiotherapy given for the treatment of oral carcinoma. Xerostomic patients are not able to tolerate conventional complete dentures. In most geriatric individuals due to aging, there is bone resorption and loss of soft-tissue elasticity, which may result in sunken cheeks. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a totally edentulous patient with xerostomia and sunken cheeks using a simple innovative design and technique of fabricating a hollow cheek plumper with a built-in salivary reservoir for better denture acceptability.

Cheek plumper: An instant, noninvasive face-lifting prosthesis—A case report

Background: Restoring lost form and function in edentulous patients is a challenge when the edentulous state has remained in a long term. Most patients with chronic edentulism suffer from a range of problems, such as reduction in facial height, cheek muscle wastage, and tongue spreading. These problems lead to an esthetic imbalance in the facial appearance. Many patients remain unsatisfied after fitting complete dentures, as these do not resolve the issue of sunken cheek appearance. Case Report: A 70-year-old male patient presented with the chief complaint of missing dentition. He also complained of the sunken cheeks. After restoration with conventional dentures, the patient still complained of sunken cheeks. This complaint was addressed by fabricating cheek plumper, and the cheek plumper was attached with the buccal flange of the maxillary denture utilizing intraoral neodymium magnets. Conclusion: Treating cases of the complete edentulism requires not only denture but also restoring the facial esthetic appearance by addressing muscle wastage. Cheek plumper is a simple, yet effective way to restore the facial contour.

Management of suction cup induced palatal bone resorption in xerostomia patient with sunken cheek appearance: A therapeutic and esthetic treatment option- A case report

Salivary reservoir in maxillary denture offers an effective, non-invasive approach in the treatment of edentulous patients afflicted with xerostomia. It is always desirable to have large volume reservoir in order to decrease the inconvenience of repeated refilling, however, increased bulk of palatal reservoir often leads to discomfort in speech, swallowing and acceptance of such prosthesis. In designing of size and shape of reservoir in the present case, large volume was achieved utilizing circular palatal resorption area, and proper shape was ensured by duplication of functional palatal contour. Adequate voluntary wetting of mouth was effected by “swallowing control saliva release” mechanism of the flexible reservoir lid. Sunken cheek appearance was addressed by using an easy, economical, and effective method of detachable cheek plumpers.

Patients are increasingly demanding improvement in esthetics at the end of treatment. Aging leads to a high impact on external facial esthetics resulting in slumped cheek leading to undesirable facial esthetics. Cheek plumper is a commonly used prosthesis to enhance the support of sunken cheeks providing better esthetics. This clinical report describes a novel technique to fabricate detachable cheek plumber to improve support for sunken cheeks retained with a ball bearing and a new commercially available material.

Every human being aspires to look beautiful and will continue to do so even when the odds are against them as they get older. Nowadays almost every edentulous patient demands a lot on the esthetics front, at least with hope for having to overcome their sunken/hollow cheek, for that slight bit of joy having to reminisce their past, when they were young and beautiful. By the use of the maxillary cheek plumpers, some support can be provided to the cheek and thereby the esthetics as well, but having to do so will be at the cost of the discomfort which the patient endures due to its added weight. This article describes the combination of Hollow Denture along with Cheek Plumper techniques, to provide more comfort to the patients, while it being non-invasive & cost-effective for the benefit of all kinds of people, as it is within every person’s rights to look wrinkleless & attractive. Clinical Implication: This technique enables the elderly and those with poor manual dexterity by completely removing any effort which needs to be put in as there is no need for attachments & enhancing the facial esthetics while remaining cost-effective. It is a quick non-invasive procedure to provide better esthetics to the discouraged/discomfiture patients, without causing much difficulty in usage on a day to day life.
