Faculty Perceptions of Academic Dishonesty

One need not search far for evidence that academicdishonesty is ubiquitous in our society. Indeed, newspaper accounts ofcheating by students, teachers, and administrators appear on a fairly reg-ular basis, and HBO recently premiered a movie, Cheaters (May 20,2000), based on a Chicago high school's cheating scandal. In the re-search literature, academic dishonesty has been the subject of researchfor decades, addressing a wide variety of issues and questions, includingwhat academic dishonesty is, how prevalent it is, who cheats, why stu-dents cheat, what the faculty reactioii is, and what the institutional re-sponse is. For a review of much of this research, see Cizek (1999),Crown and Spiller, (1998), and Whitley (1998).One of the main issues that emerges from the literature relates to in-consistencies in the definition of academically dishonest behaviors andthe lack of consensus and general understanding of academic dishonestyamong all members of the campus community. A wave of discussion involving ethics and accounting education has recently taken place. However, before accounting educators can design curricula with the most positive impact on the moral development of accounting students, educators need to have an idea of where their students stand on a variety of ethical issues. For example, there is an absence of information describing the ethical reasoning of accounting students as it relates to academic dishonesty. Knowing how accounting students feel about academic dishonesty is important. Sierles et al.(1980) found there was a continuum from cheating in college, to cheating in medical school in didactic areas, to cheating in clerkships in patient care. Thus, cheating in school may be an early warning of a propensity to engage in unethical practices during one's professional career. Teacher and Student Perceptions of Academic Cheating in Middle and Senior High Schools

AbstractPast research on academic cheating has been dominated by college samples and has excluded the study of any similarities and differences between teachers and students in their perceptions of cheating problems. Accordingly, various perceptions were examined by studying a sample of middle and senior high school students and their teachers in four different schools. Questionnaire data indicate general agreement that cheating is a serious problem, but there are substantial teacher-student differences regarding criterial attributes, causal attributions, and efficacious prevention strategies. Results are discussed in terms of previous cheating research literature and implications for classroom practice.

Deceit among the Gifted

A survey of the moral behavior of Georgia gifted high school students, first made in 1969, was replicated in 1979. Significant changes were revealed in their beliefs, attitudes and admissions regarding cheating in school and morality in our society in general. The present day gifted youngsters were much more pessimistic regarding the moral behavior of others, were more likely to admit their own transgressions in various aspects of school performance, and questioned the honesty of people engaged in professional as well as semiprofessional occupations.

Brickman (1961) reported that during the civil service examinations in ancient China tests were given in individual cubicles to prevent examinees from looking at the test papers of others, that examinees were searched for notes before they entered the cubicles, that the death penalty was in effect for both examinees and examiners if anyone was found guilty of cheating; but cheating still occurred. In modern society, Brickman continued, cheating is a frequent occurrence. In this regard, Zastrow (1970) provided evidence of a 40% incidence of cheating among graduate students. In a study by Schab (1969), approximately 24% of the girls and 20% of the boys admitted that they first began cheating in the first grade, 17% of the girls and 15% of the boys began in the eighth grade, and 13% of the girls and 9% of the boys began in the seventh grade. It would seem, then, that cheating is currently widespread in the American education
