Abraham ("Abe") Guz: a life devoted to breathing and breathlessness.

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Abe Guz passed away on April 11, 2014 at the age of 84. Abe Guz was Professor of Medicine at the Charing Cross Hospital Medical School in London, UK between 1973 and 1982, and subsequently became Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine of the joint Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, University of London until September 1994. He will be remembered for his contribution to our understanding of breathing control and of breathlessness. Abe Guz was born in 1929 in East London to Russian Jewish parents who came to England in the 1920s. In 1947, he attended Charing Cross Hospital Medical School where he was a brilliant student, winning the Gold Medal of the School and graduating with the highest honours in medicine and surgery. After serving in the army for 2 years as part of National Service as Chief Medical Officer in Germany, Abe returned to London as a senior house officer at the Hammersmith Hospital. Like many budding clinical scientists of the time, he shortly left for the USA to become a Research Fellow at Harvard University and then Senior Fellow at the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI), University of California San Francisco. He trained under Julius Comroe whom he said taught him to “think” and whom he described as someone who had “the great facility of summarising what was not known”. At the CVRI, he collaborated with Julien Hoffman, a paediatric cardiologist, to develop methods of measuring blood flow and cardiac output. Abraham Guz (1929-2014).

How do you describe a giant? As a person of abnormally great stature; above the usual size; or someone with much greater powers than the average person? Abraham Guz (‘Abe’) was not a tall man, but he was a scientific giant with an absolute desire to understand and find the scientific truth. This drive led him to make many original contributions in respiratory and cardiovascular physiology. Indeed, a simple literature search produces over 250 peer reviewed papers spanning some 50 years, the top 25 of which have been quoted over 2500 times. Moreover, most of his outstanding work was published in The Journal of Physiology, and we received it with gratitude because it was always insightful and ahead of its time. Many will argue that counting citations is a poor measure of scientific endeavour and I suspect Abe himself would certainly agree. However, this approach did provide us with a place to start when faced with the task of bringing together Abe's huge and varied scientific contributions.

Professor Sam Mhlongo was born on 31st July 1940 in South Africa. He left the country in 1963 when many activists were being re-arrested under the 90-day Law. After spending some few months in Tanzania, he went to Britain where he studied medicine as a United Nations fellow first at university of Cambridge (pre-clinical) and Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, University of London (clinical). After graduating in medicine in the early 70s, he did various jobs in London and in the United States of America. Between 1975 and 1977, he was a cardiology resident at University of Pennsylvania and Mount Sinai Hospital, New York respectively. In 1978, he returned to the United Kingdom.

The development of forensic medicine in the United Kingdom from the 18th century.

Forensic medicine in the United Kingdom includes both forensic pathology and clinical forensic medicine on the living. It began at the end of the 18th century, long after its development in Germany, Italy, France, and other countries in Europe. Initial beginnings were in Scotland, where a program began at the University of Edinburgh with the establishment of a chair in Forensic Medicine by Prof. Andrew Duncan Sr. The development in England began in London's Kings College Medical School with a chair held by Prof. William A. Guy. Later chairs in Forensic Medicine were established in Glasgow, Aberdeen, and in London, where Forensic Medicine was taught at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, Guy's Hospital Medical School, London Hospital Medical School, Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, St. Thomas Hospital Medical School, and St. George's Hospital Medical School. In other cities in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, departments were founded in Leeds, Manchester, Cardiff, and Belfast. Many textbooks were prepared during this time by professors from these medical schools and by others working in nonacademic areas. The development of coroner activities and those of the police surgeons is also part of the study of forensic medicine.

Workshop on Schizophrenia

Representatives from 19 countries met by invitation to discuss their most recent research findings at the Third Biannual Workshop on Schizophrenia, Schladming, Austria 26–31 January 1986, organised by Dr T. J. Crow (MRC, Northwick Park Hospital) and Professor S. R. Hirsch (Charing Cross Hospital Medical School). The thrust was highly biological with biochemistry and brain structure much in the fore, assisted by much greater resolution of imageing techniques and the development of specific ligands for synaptic receptors.
