Education for sustainable library infrastructure in the digital age: Analysis of library and information science curricula in South Korea

This study aims to analyse the current state of library and information science (LIS) education in South Korea and identify educational challenges in building a sustainable library infrastructure in the digital age. As libraries’ role expands in a rapidly changing information environment, LIS education must evolve. Using topic modelling techniques, this study analysed course descriptions from 37 universities and identified 10 key topics. The analysis revealed that, while the current curricula cover both traditional library science and digital technology topics, focus on the latest technology trends and practical, hands-on education is lacking. Based on these findings, this study suggests strengthening digital technology education by incorporating project-based learning; integrating emerging technologies, such as data science and artificial intelligence; and emphasising community engagement and soft skills development. This study provides insights into improving LIS education to better align with the digital era’s evolving demands.

Understanding Information Literacy Instructional Practices: Implications for Preparing Pre-Service Librarians

The role of academic librarians in supporting people to navigate the changing information environment is fundamental to librarianship and is critical in the current information environment. This poster focuses on the implications for educating pre-service librarians about the realities and challenges associated with that role, drawn from a national survey of instructional librarians in the U.S. The project speaks directly to the conference theme, “The Ethics and Evolution of Truth and Information,” as the survey respondents engage directly on the frontline of these issues. Implications for shaping the expectations of future instructional librarians will be revealed from findings of a national online survey currently underway. The survey returns to a series of questions motivating longitudinal surveys of librarians’ instructional practices conducted in other countries, and most recently conducted in the U.S. in 2016 (Julien 1998, 2000, 2005; Julien, Gross, & Latham, 2018; Julien & Leckie, 1997; Julien, Tan, & Merillat, 2013; Polkinghorne & Julien, 2018). These data paint a detailed picture of the daily practices of these professionals and the challenges they face. Despite changing technology, introduction of the ACRL Framework (2015), and the explosion of artificial intelligence use, many of the instructional practices and the pressures associated with the instructional role have remained stable (although the recent pandemic moved instruction online, at least for a time). Developing realistic expectations for the workplace is as relevant as is developing conceptual understanding, skills, and attitudes. Thus, the survey data provide an excellent opportunity to inform the education of master’s students.

This article examines the role of a teacher in the formation of fact-checking skills among schoolchildren in the context of their training in chemistry. In the era of the modern information society, where access to a huge amount of information is easily accessible, the ability to analyze and verify facts becomes absolutely critical. This article discusses a variety of methods that teachers can use to integrate fact-checking into their curricula. These methods include the development of lessons aimed at assessing the reliability of sources, the analysis of experimental data and a critical review of the literature. Teachers, paying attention to examples of unreliable information in chemical publications, can encourage students to develop skills of critical evaluation of information. The article focuses on the practical aspects of teaching fact-checking, including the use of modern technologies and online resources to verify the validity of facts. The study highlights the need for constant updating of teaching methods to meet the changing information environment. The development of fact-checking skills among schoolchildren not only contributes to their successful education in the field of chemistry, but also helps to form the foundations of critical thinking and responsible information consumption.

Understanding uptake of information about innovations among emergency department clinicians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, little was known about managing sick patients, but emergency department (ED) clinicians had to decide which treatments and care processes to adopt. Our objective was to describe how ED clinicians learned about innovations and how they assessed them for credibility during the pandemic. We purposively sampled clinicians from hospital-based EDs to conduct focus groups with ED clinicians and staff. We used both inductive and deductive approaches to conduct thematic analysis of transcripts. We conducted focus groups with clinicians from eight EDs across the United States. We found that ED clinicians in our sample relied on friends and colleagues or departmental and institutional leadership for information on innovations. They used social media sources when they came from credible accounts but did not directly seek information from professional societies. Clinicians reported a range of challenges to obtain credible information during the pandemic, including a fractured and changing information environment, policies misaligned across clinical sites or that conflicted with clinical knowledge, high patient volume, fear of harming patients, and untimely information. Facilitators included access to experienced and trusted colleagues and leaders and practicing at multiple EDs. Participants cited anecdotal evidence, institutional practice, and word-of-mouth-rather than peer-reviewed evidence and professional society communications-as their primary sources of information about care innovations during the early phases of the pandemic. These results underscore the importance of developing trusted local mechanisms and wider networks to identify and vet information for frontline clinicians during rapidly emerging public health emergencies.

In today’s business environment, it is important to have effective tools to develop and maintain a successful online marketing enterprise. Strategic use of online resources can significantly increase sales, increase brand awareness, and improve interaction with the audience. Tools for analyzing, planning, and implementing online marketing strategies are becoming key factors in ensuring the competitiveness and sustainability of enterprises in the digital age. This article explores the modern tools of the Internet marketing strategy, highlighting its key components and impact on the successful operation of enterprises in the modern digital world. The article demonstrates the use of Internet marketing on the example of a company specializing in the production of modern facing and insulation materials for facade and interior decoration. It is highlighted that the use of marketing in the Internet environment cannot be a universal template strategy, since each enterprise forms its own strategy by analyzing the target audience, assessing the competitive landscape and taking into account its own business goals. It is found that the definition of an effective Internet marketing strategy is the result of a unique approach of each enterprise to solving its own tasks and meets its specific needs and conditions. In addition, this paper examines the essence of the concept of "Internet marketing", considers various options for interpreting this definition offered in scientific sources. The importance of continuous improvement of marketing strategies for the successful operation of an enterprise in a rapidly changing information environment, introduction of new technologies and increased competition for consumer attention is emphasized. It is noted that this process is continuous and critical for achieving success in modern business.

Management of Higher Education Institutions as a New Tool for the Development of Higher Education

Higher education is extremely important for the socio-economic development and cultural enrichment of society, providing people with the relevant knowledge and skills to improve their skills and productivity in the context of further global development. Today, the task of effective resource provision and high-quality organization of the student learning process is extremely relevant in the world. The formation of a new mentality of all stakeholders in the educational process in a rapidly changing information environment is of great importance. This task requires constant monitoring and evaluation of the education system based on the collection, processing, and analysis of data necessary to make informed management decisions for the optimal development of higher education. The article aims to highlight the main patterns of management of higher education institutions with a view to their development reflected in the scientific literature, and to clarify certain practical characteristics of this process. In the process of preparing this study, the analytical and bibliographic methods, induction, deduction, and analysis were applied. The synthesis of information was used to study the scientific literature on issues related to the management of HEIs. Meanwhile, systemic-structural, comparative, logical, and linguistic methods, abstraction, and idealization were applied to study and process data. Among other things, the authors of the study conducted an online questionnaire survey to clarify certain aspects of this issue practically. Based on the results of the study, the theoretical aspects of the use of management tools as a tool for the development of HEIs have been studied. Moreover, some practical issues related to the management process in higher education have been characterized.

Designing a branding model for academic libraries affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology in Iran

PurposeThis study identifies factors affecting brand building for academic libraries affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT) in Iran.Design/methodology/approachThis research applied the grounded theory method based on the three open, axial and selective coding steps (Strauss and Corbin, 1998). The research tool was interviews conducted with 20 experts in librarianship, marketing and branding.FindingsLibrary building architecture, library information resources and services, librarians' branding, marketing activities and library management are the causal conditions affecting brand building. The national economic situation, the digital publishing situation in the country and different characteristics of the new library community are the intervening conditions affecting brand building. The role of other libraries in society in the scientific education of the new generation provides contextual conditions for brand building. The higher education system and the library parent organization play a part in the operative actions/interactions for brand building. The consequences of brand building are brand image development, brand excellence and brand behavioral loyalty for libraries. Library brand identity is also a core category in brand building.Originality/valueFacing steep challenges by emergent services, academic libraries are ill-prepared to meet the needs of the new information society solely with traditional services and functions. Academic libraries are required to rebrand themselves to be more successful at delivering a strong performance within a changing information environment by enhancing their brand image and establishing a more effective relationship with users.

Dynamically changing information environment of industrial enterprises of the Russian Federation needs complex systems to evaluate and predict efficiency. Information management system, at the same time, plays an important role. The article discusses the issues of assessing the influence of factors and criteria of the ISIE management system on the effectiveness of the system. The author's ASAD matrix and DEMATEL method are used. Mutual influence of the factors and criteria of ASAD according to DEMATEL method is analyzed in the framework of pairwise comparison of expert estimates in the matrix as weights. Based on this comprehensive approach, the analysis of cause-effect relationships between multifactorial indicators of availability, sufficiency, accessibility and demand for ISIE is used. The results obtained suggest carrying out estimated prediction of improvement of the ISIE management system efficiency based on expert assessments.

SELF-EDUCATIONAL – A QUALITY BENCHMARK FOR THE PROFESSIONAL TRAINING OF FUTURE EXPERTS IN PHYSICAL THERAPY AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

In modern conditions of social development, the requirements for future physical and occupational therapists' professional training are changing.
 In order to train highly qualified specialists ready for professional activities in today's changing conditions, it is necessary to form their self-educational competence.
 In order to be competitive in the labor market, it is necessary to increase one’s potential during self-education activities. This determines the relevance of the formation of self-educational competence of future physical rehabilitators, occupational therapists during their studies at higher education institutions.
 In this article, we aim to substantiate the need for the formation of self-educational competence in future specialists in physical therapy and occupational therapy during their studies at higher education institutions.
 It has been established that self-educational competence is an integral component of the professional adequacy of a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist. This competence includes the ability to acquire knowledge independently and understand the importance of education throughout life.
 It was determined that the formed self-educational competence of future physiotherapy specialists ensures their professional mobility, competitiveness in the labor market and promotes the development of adaptive skills.
 It is emphasized that the formation of self-learning competence is a continuous process carried out throughout a specialist's entire professional activity.
 The importance of forming basic skills and components of self-educational competence to enable students to carry out the process of self-education in the future is highlighted.
 The relevance of the development of self-educational competence of future specialists, in particular of physical and occupational therapy in current conditions of remote studying, was noted.
 It has been established that today's conditions require restructuring the principle of cooperation between teachers and students by reducing classroom classes, devoting more time for independent processing of educational material, as well as optimization of methodical support of the educational process etc.
 The purpose of the research: to theoretically substantiate the need for the formation of self-educational competence in future specialists in physical and occupational therapy during their studies in institutions of higher education.
 Materials and methods: systematic analysis of scientific literature; theoretical generalization and systematization of information about the formation of self-educational competence of future physical and occupational therapy specialists during professional training in higher education institutions.
 As a result of the research, it was concluded that there is a high demand in society for physical and occupational therapists who can independently acquire knowledge and master new methods and technologies.
 That is why it is necessary that their professional self-development training should be carried out during studying in higher education facilities.
 Graduates of higher education institutions must maintain scientific knowledge, effective techniques, and skills that allow them to adapt independently and quickly in a changing information environment.
 We believe that the ability of students to self-educate and the desire to improve their skills contribute to the improvement of the quality of higher education.

Substitution between Accrual-Based Earnings Management and Real Activities Manipulation—A Commentary and Guidance for Future Research

ABSTRACTConsidering the voluminous published research confirming and extending the original findings of Cohen, Dey, and Lys (2008), we conclude that Pincus, Wu, and Hwang (2022) make a modest contribution to the earnings management literature. Specifically, their analysis does not incorporate recent advances in the earnings management literature, especially the measurement and estimation of real earnings management activities and the incorporation of the changing information environment. As a result, we conclude that the Pincus et al. (2022) results and conclusions with regards to the substitution between accrual-based and real earnings management activities should be interpreted with caution.JEL Classifications: G10; M4.

This community-oriented activity is important for every society, as it not only improves its general condition, but also teaches people to focus their efforts not only on their own needs, but on the common good. The Process of Adapting Content of the Online Newspaper Lenta.ru Towards the Social Media Space

Currently, online newspapers whose activities meet journalistic standards are forced to adapt quite quickly to the rapidly developing digital environment. This is primarily due to the transition of the majority of the readership to the space of social networks and messengers, acting today as news providers. In the current situation, media editors have to master new, unusual strategies and technologies for presenting news content. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of the process of transformation of the communication structure of the mass media to the space of social networks and messengers in a changing information environment, using the example of an online newspaper Lenta.ru . This article describes the characteristics of a social network and messenger as platforms for the activities of the online publication. The article examines the ways of presenting the material and the strategies used by the editorial staff on these Internet resources, taking into account the process of merging journalism and marketing, which is characteristic of the media activities in social networks.

Managing enterprise information: meeting performance and conformance objectives in a changing information environment

This paper presents the findings of an in-depth survey to examine the current status of enterprise information management (EIM) in organizations. The survey explores five key areas: drivers and capabilities of EIM; current status of EIM strategies; EIM content and technologies; EIM and compliance; and the changing role of the information professional. The survey reveals that the drivers for EIM cannot be simply reduced to a series of technical or organizational needs and that EIM is a complex sociotechnical phenomenon. A fine balance is required to achieve business performance objectives whilst at the same time also meeting conformance requirements. To date, few organizations have implemented enterprise-wide EIM strategies; however those who do have them are better able to keep track of, and achieve, performance objectives. In terms of technologies and content the landscape is complex with organizations focusing their efforts into managing and reducing this complexity. Finally information management work is changing; the survey reveals EIM as a multi-stakeholder activity requiring the combination of a wide range of professional groups, skills and knowledge. The survey findings provide the basis for further research investigations in supporting organization in their EIM initiatives.

Disinformed social movements: A large-scale mapping of conspiracy narratives as online harms during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic caused high uncertainty regarding appropriate treatments and public policy reactions. This uncertainty provided a perfect breeding ground for spreading conspiratorial anti-science narratives based on disinformation. Disinformation on public health may alter the population’s hesitance to vaccinations, counted among the ten most severe threats to global public health by the United Nations. We understand conspiracy narratives as a combination of disinformation, misinformation, and rumour that are especially effective in drawing people to believe in post-factual claims and form disinformed social movements. Conspiracy narratives provide a pseudo-epistemic background for disinformed social movements that allow for self-identification and cognitive certainty in a rapidly changing information environment. This study monitors two established conspiracy narratives and their communities on Twitter, the anti-vaccination and anti-5G communities, before and during the first UK lockdown. The study finds that, despite content moderation efforts by Twitter, conspiracy groups were able to proliferate their networks and influence broader public discourses on Twitter, such as #Lockdown in the United Kingdom.

Using the Project Method during the Graphic Training of Future Computer Science Teachers

In view of the modern prospects of technological development, the role of a computer science teacher in providing comprehensive and competitive training to students of higher education institutions should not be underrated. As long as graphic technology constitutes is an essential part of every day changing information environment, graphic training must be paid, especially great attention and the methods for its performance must be thought-through deeply enough. The task of higher education institutions is not only to form the knowledge of the basic rules of performing graphic documents for future specialists but also to teach them how to use their knowledge for rational perception and transformation of the surrounding technology-related environment. The experience of the conducted research proved that an effective tool for the implementation of this goal is the use of the project method in the educational process, which in turn makes it necessary to justify the method of its use. This study revealed the features of using the project method at various stages of forming graphic concepts in the process of professional training of future computer science teachers. It is possible to conclude that in the project activity combined with the tasks of graphic training, future teachers of computer science comprehend the entire technology of solving problems from the problem statement to the presentation of the result.

Riding the Wave of Digital Transformation in Behavioral Medicine.

Digital technologies provide a platform for accelerating science and broadening impact in behavioral medicine. The objective of this invited keynote presentation or paper is to offer a blueprint for navigating the rapidly changing waters of digital health. A strategic literature review on digital health technologies in behavioral medicine was combined with a review of relevant policy initiatives to yield insights on: (a) knowledge building, (b) collaboration, and (c) public health stewardship. Digital platforms offer unprecedented leverage for accelerating science, facilitating collaboration, and advancing public health. Early successes in behavioral medicine demonstrated how digital platforms could extend the reach of theory-based behavioral therapeutics through increases in efficiency and scale. As medical investments in health information technology increased, the field of behavioral informatics emerged as the collaborative glue binding behavioral theory into a new generation of patient-facing applications, clinical decision support tools, evidence-based communication programs, and population health management strategies. As a leader within the interstitial space between medicine, psychology, and engineering, the Society of Behavioral Medicine is in a distinct position to exert influence on the ways in which our science is utilized to eliminate health disparities; improve support for patients, caregivers, and communities; to promote general health and well-being; and to offer relief when confronted with psychological pain or addiction. Riding the wave of digital transformation has less to do with mastering the complexities of the latest technologies and more to do with adhering closely to established principles for navigating a rapidly changing information environment.

Role of Lebanese public school libraries in the changing information environment

Researchers and library associations are continually questioning and investigating the state and role of school libraries in different countries across the globe. This study provides original empirical material to gain insight into the situation of public school libraries in Lebanon and it aims to determine the roles assigned to them and the reasons that inhibit their development. This study revealed that the focus of libraries’ programs and activities is to promote reading among students, making best use of available print books collections, while other areas of activities such as promoting research skills and supporting the curriculum are underplayed. Also, the context in which few secondary public schools libraries operate today is due to local and international community initiatives.

Models for Teaching Information Literacy: A Comparative Review of the Top Six Models

Information literacy is a necessary prerequisite for achieving educational, occupational, economic and personal goals in society. It has also become an essential skill to achieve individual goals. Many models have been designed for developing these crucial skills but few published scholarly studies have explored their effectiveness and none have compared them. The present paper reviewed the literature to select the most commonly used models for teaching information literacy, and analysed the reported strengths and weaknesses of the top six models. The top six models are the Information Search Process, the Big6 information skills, the Seven Pillars of Information Literacy, the Pathways to Knowledge, the PLUS model, and the Seven Faces of Information Literacy. The Information Search Process knowledge model stood out as the most useful prescriptive model especially through its ability across disciplines, beginning at the elementary educational level and extensively university level. The paper also highlights the values of integrating information literacy into curriculum development to enhance students’ learning experience and to develop skills and abilities necessary for the rapidly changing information environment of the twenty-first century.

Competitive intelligence as a coping strategy for academic libraries in South Africa

PurposeThis study examined the extent to which public academic libraries in South Africa coped with the changing information environment by using competitive intelligence (CI) to attain competitiveness.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopted positivism as the main philosophical lens and also incorporated qualitative elements to augment the quantitative data through a survey research design. Questionnaires were e-mailed to 25 directors of public academic libraries in South Africa and 17 were returned, yielding a 68% response rate. Attempts were made to reach to the 25 directors through semi-structured telephonic interviews, and only eight responded some through their representatives, yielding a 32% response rate. Using two instruments permitted the triangulation of data. A noted limitation of the study is that some library directors neither responded to the questionnaire nor the interview.FindingsFindings revealed that various competitive intelligence techniques were employed; however, their implementation was not formalised. Competitiveness was driven by various factors such as rivalries in the information value chain; relevance; financial and budgetary constraints; changing user expectations and evolving technology.Originality/valueThis study is novel because there is a dearth of literature on implementation and use of competitive intelligence in academic libraries in South Africa.
