The Economic Impact of Sustainable Marine Development on The Aquaculture Industry

With the growth of the global population and economic development, aquaculture has become an important source to meet the increasing demand for food. However, this industry also faces many challenges, including environmental pollution, resource shortage, biosecurity, and other issues. Therefore, achieving sustainable Marine development is crucial for the future development and survival of the aquaculture industry. This paper aims to investigate the economic impact of sustainable Marine development on mariculture. First, we will introduce the sustainable development of the ocean, and at the same time explain the impact of global warming and seawater pollution on the ocean, highlighting the need for sustainable development of the ocean. Then we will introduce the concept and definition of the aquaculture industry, and mariculture industry with the highest correlation with the ocean, and analyze the economic impact of ocean changes on mariculture based on the research status. Finally, based on the problems revealed above, the development mode and prospects are put forward. Through this study, we can draw the following conclusions: the sustainable development of the ocean is positive for both the economy of the aquaculture industry and the overall ecological environment of the ocean, but the joint efforts of the government, enterprises, and individuals are needed to achieve the long-term sustainable development of the ocean.

Temperature and nutrients drive distinct successions between diatoms and dinoflagellates over the past 40 years: Implications for climate warming and eutrophication

Diatoms and dinoflagellates are two typical functional groups of phytoplankton, playing important roles in ecosystem processes and biogeochemical cycles. Changes in diatoms and dinoflagellates are thought to be one of the possible mechanisms for the increase in harmful algal blooms (HABs), due to changing hydrological conditions associated with climate change and human activities. However, little is known about their ability to adapt to changing ocean environments, thus making it difficult to know whether and how they are adapting. By analyzing a 44-year monitoring dataset in the central Bohai Sea during 1978–2021, we found that the abundance ratio of diatoms to dinoflagellates showed a decreasing trend seasonally and ecologically, indicating that the phytoplankton community underwent distinct successional processes from diatom dominance to diatom-dinoflagellate co-dominance. These processes exhibited varying responses to temperature, nutrient concentrations and ratios, and their interactions, of which temperature primarily drove the seasonal succession whereas nutrients were responsible for the ecological succession. Specifically, diatoms showed a preference for lower temperatures and higher DIP concentrations, and were able to tolerate lower DIN at lower temperatures. In contrast, dinoflagellates tended to prevail at conditions of warming and high N/P ratios. These different traits of diatoms and dinoflagellates reflected the fact that warming as a result of rising temperature and eutrophication as a consequence of nutrient input would favor dinoflagellates over diatoms. Moreover, the increasing dominance of dinoflagellates indicated that dinoflagellate blooms were likely to become more frequent and intense in the central Bohai Sea.

Tropical ocean teleconnections with gross primary productivity of monsoon-Asia

The intricate oceanic climate interactions with terrestrial primary production of Asian ecosystems exert crucial social-economical-environmental repercussions. Yet, a holistic understanding of tropical sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated with the gross primary productivity (GPP) variations of monsoon-Asia remains constrained. This study provides a statistical framework demonstrating how SST perturbations in the tropics influence GPP fluctuations in monsoon-Asia by modulating hydrothermal conditions of different climate system components. Observation evidence explicitly illustrated the characteristic anomalous SST signatures of positive and negative GPP anomalies in South and Southeast Asia during June–August. The SST anomalies of the central-eastern tropical Pacific showed a robust negative impact on the GPP variability of South-Asia. The GPP alterations in maritime-Southeast-Asia exhibited strong connections with SST anomalies of the western Pacific (positive) and eastern equatorial Pacific (negative). The oceanic signals in the GPP variability of South-Asia and maritime-Southeast-Asia mirrored canonical El Niño and La Niña patterns. The detected SST–GPP link is feasible through large-scale atmospheric circulation variability and the consequent regional modulation of heat and moisture fluxes. The anomalous strengthening (weakening) of Walker cell enhances (reduces) water availability to plants for photosynthesis during the La Niña (El Niño) phase of the ENSO cycle and thus elevates (lowers) GPP in South-Asia and Maritime-southeast-Asia. In contrast, the enhanced GPP anomaly in mainland-Southeast-Asia depicts signs of canonical La Niña and Indian Ocean subtropical dipole (IOSD) teleconnections. The positive impact of IOSD was through the modulation of the Mascarene High and the consequent impact on the monsoon. Meanwhile, decreased GPP bears the imprint of El Niño Modoki and warm tropical Indian Ocean SSTs. The atmospheric teleconnections demonstrated the delayed impact of El Niño Modoki on GPP variability through the Indian Ocean capacitor effect. Our findings could be instrumental in forecasting the probable effects on vegetation growth in monsoon-Asia associated with high-frequency tropical oceanic changes.

Holocene paleoceanographic variability in Robertson Bay, Ross Sea, Antarctica: A marine record of ocean, ice sheet, and climate connectivity

Accelerating ocean-driven basal melting of Antarctic ice shelves in recent decades has implications for sea level rise and global overturning circulation. Here, we reconstruct oceanographic conditions at the confluence of the Ross Sea and the Southern Ocean by analyzing a multi-proxy Holocene marine sedimentary record collected from Robertson Bay. A ramped pyrolysis oxidation radiocarbon age-depth model provides a timeline for glacial behavior and oceanographic changes over the last 6700 years. The diatom assemblage, magnetic susceptibility, grain size, total organic carbon and nitrogen, trace elements, and bulk δ13C are used as proxies for changing ocean and glacial conditions, which we interpret in the context of modern oceanographic measurements.Our record shows evidence of persistent ice cover in the northwestern Ross Sea during the Antarctic mid-Holocene climate optimum (ca. 5 cal kyr BP). Based on this observation, we suggest that meltwater and iceberg discharge associated with ice sheet retreat in the Ross Sea region altered local oceanography during the mid-Holocene. The onset of modern style oceanographic conditions in Robertson Bay occurred at ca. 4 cal kyr BP. Stable late Holocene conditions in are punctuated by a period of enhanced polynya activity and upwelling of nutrient rich Circumpolar Deep Water ca. 0.8 cal kyr BP and an increase in the seasonal duration of sea ice after 0.7 cal kyr BP, during the Little Ice Age. The response of the marine environment in Robertson Bay to mid-Holocene ice sheet retreat and natural climate variability during the last millennium underscores the sensitivity of the Antarctic ice-ocean interface to projected changes in coming decades.

Impacts of Global Warming on Marine Ecosystems: Ocean Acidification and Fish Catches

The temperature of the earth has been increasing since the industrial revolution. In recent years, global warming has become more and more severe, so as to the warmer ocean. This paper focus on the response of the oceans to the global warming in physical, chemical, and biological. Under the current climate of global warming, the oceans play a huge mitigating role as thermal containers. And the oceans are also the largest carbon sink in the world. This leads to a serious pollution, ocean acidification, which may change the physical and chemical processes of the ocean and affect the environment of marine life. In the meantime, we point out that the nature internal variability also has great impact on the marine ecosystem, like fish catches. If we learn more the mechanisms of the internal variability, there would be less uncertainty of the ocean changes. Overall, we show a general picture of the effect of the ocean warming to our readers and try to give some constructive suggestions to the policy maker.

Ocean cavity regime shift reversed West Antarctic grounding line retreat in the late Holocene

Recent geologic and modeled evidence suggests that the grounding line of the Siple Coast of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) retreated hundreds of kilometers beyond its present position in the middle to late Holocene and readvanced within the past 1.7 ka. This grounding line reversal has been attributed to both changing rates of isostatic rebound and regional climate change. Here, we test these two hypotheses using a proxy-informed ensemble of ice sheet model simulations with varying ocean thermal forcing, global glacioisostatic adjustment (GIA) model simulations, and coupled ice sheet-GIA simulations that consider the interactions between these processes. Our results indicate that a warm to cold ocean cavity regime shift is the most likely cause of this grounding line reversal, but that GIA influences the rate of ice sheet response to oceanic changes. This implies that the grounding line here is sensitive to future changes in sub-ice shelf ocean circulation.

Climate Variability, Coastal Livelihoods, and the Influence of Ocean Change on Fish Catch in the Coastal Savannah Zone of Ghana

Coastal zones, despite their contribution to global economies, continue to suffer the negative impacts of climate variability, which limit the livelihoods of people, particularly small-scale fishermen. This study examined climate variability, coastal livelihoods, and the influence of ocean change on the total annual fish catch in Ghana’s Coastal Savannah zone. The mixed-methods approach was used to analyze primary data (semi-structured questionnaires and interviews), secondary data (sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS), and fish catch), and statistical tests (chi-square, binary logistic regression, and multiple regression). Findings revealed a significant increase in climate variability awareness among fishermen, attributed to the influence of broadcast media. However, they lack sufficient information regarding the transformation of cities, the urbanization process, and its impact on the global climate. Increasing temperatures and sea level rise emerged as the most prevalent impacts of climate variability over the past two decades in the zone. Although the fishermen lack awareness regarding the changes in SSS and their effects on fish, the findings of the multiple regression analysis established that changes in SSS exert a more pronounced effect on the decreasing fishing catch in the zone compared to those in SST. Empirical fish catch records supported the fishermen’s claim of a substantial decrease in total fish catch in the zone over the past 20 years. Aside from climate variability impacts, the involvement of many people and light fishing emerged as additional factors contributing to the decreasing fish catch in the zone. High premix fuel prices or shortages and “saiko” activities were the main obstacles that hindered the fishermen’s activities. “Saiko” is an unlawful activity in which foreign industrial trawlers sell fish directly to Ghanaian canoes or small-scale fishermen at sea. The fishermen lack sufficient means of supporting their livelihoods, as there is a lack of viable alternative livelihood options. Additionally, the majority of the fishermen experience symptoms of fever and headaches. The binary logistic regression analysis showed that the fishermen’s income insufficiency could be substantially reduced if they were to have their own houses, canoes, or fish all year. This situation highlights the need for heightened support from policymakers for improved sustainable livelihood prospects as well as health and well-being.

Origin and Formation Mechanism of the Late Permian Black Siliceous Rocks in the Lower Yangtze Region.

The Late Permian witnessed a Permian Chert Event (PCE) and distinctive oceanic geochemical fluctuations, such as an ocean acidification event, large-scale volcanic eruption, and rapid global warming. However, the links between siliceous rock formation mechanism, ocean, and climate changes are rarely discussed. In this article, two well-preserved deeper-water sections of the Dalong Formation from the Lower Yangtze region in southeast China are selected for analysis. To document the coeval oceanic changes, we present thin section authentication, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation, and multiple geochemical proxies, including total organic carbon contents (TOC), major element contents, trace element contents, and rare earth element contents (REEs). The results show that siliceous rocks are mainly of biological origin in this region. The low content of MgO (0.10-0.94%, mean = 0.36%) in the Fantiansi section of Tongling area indicates that it is affected by regional hydrothermal fluids. The correlation between Al2O3/TiO2, Al2O3 versus SiO2 /Al2O3, and TiO2/ΣREEs indicates that the Late Permian was greatly influenced by the continuous input of terrigenous materials. The correlations of MnO/TiO2, LaN/CeN, Ce/Ce*, and LREE/HREE imply that the Dalong Formation siliceous rocks were deposited in a continental margin setting. Redox geochemical data (EFU, EFMo, and EFV) imply the water column experienced widespread anoxic/euxinic during the Late Permian, which aided in the preservation of organic matter following biological decay. The accumulation of siliceous rocks is related to South China experiencing a hot tropical climate, coastal upwelling and continental weathering-enriched marine nutrients, fostering high primary productivity, and benefiting abundant siliceous zooplankton. Volcanic and regional hydrothermal activity further enhanced nutrient flux, and the simultaneous ocean acidification event provided favorable chemical conditions for the preservation of silica, leading to the formation of siliceous rocks in the Dalong Formation.

Nanoplastics impair growth and nitrogen fixation of marine nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria

Nanoplastics pollution is a growing environmental problem worldwide. Recent research has demonstrated the toxic effects of nanoplastics on various marine organisms. However, the influences of nanoplastics on marine nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, a critical nitrogen source in the ocean, remained unknown. Here, we report that nanoplastics exposure significantly reduced growth, photosynthetic, and nitrogen fixation rates of Crocosphaera watsonii (a major marine nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium). Transcriptomic analysis revealed that nanoplastics might harm C. watsonii via downregulation of photosynthetic pathways and DNA damage repair genes, while genes for respiration, cell damage, nitrogen limitation, and iron (and phosphorus) scavenging were upregulated. The number and size of starch grains and electron-dense vacuoles increased significantly after nanoplastics exposure, suggesting that C. watsonii allocated more resources to storage instead of growth under stress. We propose that nanoplastics can damage the cell (e.g., DNA, cell membrane, and membrane-bound transporters), inhibit nitrogen and carbon fixation, and hence lead to nutrient limitation and impaired growth. Our findings suggest the possibility that nanoplastics pollution could reduce the new nitrogen input and hence affect the productivity in the ocean. The impact of nanoplastics on marine nitrogen fixation and productivity should be considered when predicting the ecosystem response and biogeochemical cycling in the changing ocean.

The Sediments in the Beibu Gulf Reveal Dramatic Paleoenvironmental Changes and Climate Events over the Past ~20,000 Years

The geochemical characteristics of a 2.1 m BBW25 core, collected from the Beibu Gulf, have been investigated in terms of the major and trace elements, organic matter, and CaCO3 and AMS 14C dating by XRF, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and more. We have found through previous research that there are issues with unclear delineation of sedimentary evolution environments and inexact responses between chemical weathering intensity and major paleoclimate events in the Beibu Gulf. The AMS 14C dating results indicate that the sedimentary age at the bottom was 19.24 ky b.p. CaCO3, δ13C, C/N, and Sr/Ba indexes show a sedimentary environment change from terrestrial to marine environments and a “jump” of ~4000 years in continent–ocean changes. The evolution of the sedimentary environment of Beibu Gulf was divided into three environments and five sub-environments. The changes in chemical weathering intensity indicators recorded by the CIX and the Fe/Al ratio respond well to the East Asian monsoon cycle, the meltwater events, and the alternation of cold and warm events. This study explains the chemical weathering intensity and sedimentary environment in the BBW25 core by geochemical characteristics and further reveals the paleoenvironmental characteristics and possible driving mechanisms over the past ~20,000 years.

The Response of the Upper Ocean to Tropical Cyclones in the South Pacific

AbstractConsecutive Argo float profiles are used to observe upper ocean changes resulting from the passage of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the South Pacific between 2001 and 2023. Cross‐sectional composites of the ocean response are produced by normalizing the distance between the profile and cyclone track by the 34‐knot wind radius (R34) of each TC to better resolve the average changes in water properties. Surface cooling in the initial mixed layer (ML) extends from the center to about twice R34 and is stronger to the left of the TC track. Subsurface warming at the base of the ML is observed between 0.4 and 2 R34 on both sides of the track. Strong cooling is observed in a distinct core directly under the TC path, reaching temperature changes of over −1.6°C between 70 and 450 m depth. Significant upwelling of over 40 m displacement is observed within ±0.05 R34, extending to 1,000 m depth. Surface cooling (and subsurface warming at the base of the ML) are positively correlated with wind stress on the ocean from the TC, quantified by the Local Wind Power Dissipation (PDL), and negatively correlated with the energy required to destratify the upper ocean, defined by a Cooling Inhibition index (CI). Subsurface warming is common with low CI but is not observed with high CI. We demonstrate an improved method to analyze Argo float data for measuring TC‐upper ocean interaction in remote oceans and the usefulness of PDL and CI in calibrating the TC‐ocean interaction.

Marine protected areas can be useful but are not a silver bullet for kelp conservation.

Kelp forests are among the most valuable ecosystems on Earth, but they are increasingly being degraded and lost due to a range of human-related stressors, leading to recent calls for their improved management and conservation. One of the primary tools to conserve marine species and biodiversity is the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs). International commitments to protect 30% of the world's ecosystems are gaining momentum, offering a promising avenue to secure kelp forests into the Anthropocene. However, a clear understanding of the efficacy of MPAs for conserving kelp forests in a changing ocean is lacking. In this perspective, we question whether strengthened global protection will create meaningful conservation outcomes for kelp forests. We explore the benefits of MPAs for kelp conservation under a suite of different stressors, focusing on empirical evidence from protected kelp forests. We show that MPAs can be effective against some drivers of kelp loss (e.g., overgrazing, kelp harvesting), particularly when they are maintained in the long-term and enforced as no-take areas. There is also some evidence that MPAs can reduce impacts of climate change through building resilience in multi-stressor situations. However, MPAs also often fail to provide protection against ocean warming, marine heatwaves, coastal darkening, and pollution, which have emerged as dominant drivers of kelp forest loss globally. Although well-enforced MPAs should remain an important tool to protect kelp forests, successful kelp conservation will require implementing an additional suite of management solutions that target these accelerating threats.

Depth Range Extension for the Misty Grouper Hyporthodus mystacinus Documented via Deep-Sea Landers throughout the Greater Caribbean

Misty Groupers (Hyporthodus mystacinus) are one of the largest and most geographically widespread grouper species and one of the few grouper species known to occur at depths greater than 200 m. However, aspects of their basic biology, behavior, and ecology remain poorly understood, leaving significant gaps in our ability to evaluate their functional role throughout the vertical water column, as well as our understanding of their conservation needs in a changing ocean. Through in-situ video observation obtained using deep-sea landers in both The Bahamas and Cayman Islands over multiple years, we documented Misty Grouper occurrence up to 470 m depth in the mesopelagic zone. These observations provide a new depth range extension for the species and illuminate the potential importance of deep-water habitats for large grouper species in the wider Caribbean.

Trends of Satellite-Derived Thermal Fronts in the Southeast and Southwest of Australia Between 1993 and 2019

Oceanic fronts play a significant role in marine ecosystems by enhancing vertical exchange, promoting the aggregation of plankton, and drawdown of organic carbon. Anthropogenic emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the twentieth century has driven global warming, leading to rising ocean temperatures. Specific regions warming faster than the global average—known as ‘ocean warming hotspots’—have been identified, impacting geophysical and biogeochemical dynamics of local ecosystems. Here, we aim to characterize the variability of sea surface temperature (SST) fronts in the southeast and southwest Australia hotspots. Using a histogram frontal detection method, we derived fronts from AVHRR-only and Multi-sensor 6-day SST composites on a 0.02 × 0.02 grid between January 1993 and December 2019. Our results indicate that frontal frequency and frontal density have increased in both regions in the past three decades, by around 0.2–0.3%. In addition, both regions exhibit higher frequency and density of fronts in austral winter and fewer in austral summer. Our calculations show that changes in frontal frequency/density show some relationship to El Niño-Southern Oscillation and Indian Ocean Dipole. Changes in frontal activity could strongly impact local ocean biogeochemistry and marine ecosystems. A better understanding changing fronts in hotspots will help predict and manage future changes in regional oceans to warming.

Ocean warming shapes embryonic developmental prospects of the next generation in Atlantic cod

Abstract Although early embryonic protein production relies exclusively on maternal molecules such as messenger RNAs (mRNAs) incorporated into ovarian follicles, knowledge about any thermally induced, intergenerational effects is scarce in ectotherms. Here, we investigated how elevated temperatures (9°–12°C vs. 6°C) during oogenesis influenced the next generation by targeting maternal mRNAs in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) embryos, in view of up- and down-regulated genes in ovarian follicles of pre-spawning adults. Overall, the spawning female liver showed significantly higher levels of free amino acids and N-metabolites at 9°C than at 6°C. Higher-than-optimal temperatures induced adjustments in embryo transcriptome proportional to the temperature increase relative to the control group. The adjustments included alterations in maternal-effect genes, which are developmentally conserved among vertebrates. The transcriptomic differences for a selection of genes in embryos were reflected in ovarian follicles (containing multiple cell types) several months ahead of the spawning season, implying that environmental conditions of the adults are key for adjusting the genetic instructions for offspring development. This programming of fundamental traits from mother to offspring appears part of a sophisticated process to adapt the offspring to a changing ocean, though within life stage-specific, physiological thermal tolerance windows.

Decadal decreasing trend in biological carbon pump estimated from 234Th in the western subarctic North Pacific

We measured thorium-234 (234Th), particulate organic carbon (POC), and chlorophyll a in the western subarctic North Pacific surface layer in 1997–2008. 234Th, POC, and chlorophyll a in the surface layer showed clear seasonal changes. As a result of approximation by using a trigonometric function, 234Th export flux estimated from the deficiency of 234Th relative to 238U and the ratio of POC to particulate 234Th (POC/234ThP) indicated constant and decreasing trends in the study area from 1997 to 2008, respectively. POC export flux estimated from 234Th decreased in the study area, showing that the strength of the biological carbon pump in this region declined in the studied decade. The ratio of POC/chlorophyll a decreased during the term. These trends were possibly caused by a decline in not the biomass but particle size of phytoplankton. Our results suggest that not only the biological carbon pump but also phytoplankton community structure change in the western subarctic Pacific Ocean in a decade.

Evidence for Kilometer‐Scale Biophysical Features at the Gulf Stream Front

AbstractUnderstanding the interplay of ocean physics and biology at the submesoscale and below (<30 km) is an ongoing challenge in oceanography. While poorly constrained, these scales may be of critical importance for understanding how changing ocean dynamics will impact marine ecosystems. Fronts in the ocean, regions where two disparate water masses meet and isopycnals become tilted toward vertical, are considered hotspots for biophysical interaction, but there is limited observational evidence at the appropriate scales to assess their importance. Fronts around western boundary currents like the Gulf Stream are of particular interest as these dynamic physical regions are thought to influence both productivity and composition of primary producers; however, how exactly this plays out is not well known. Using satellite data and 2 years of in situ observations across the Gulf Stream front near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, we investigate how submesoscale frontal dynamics could affect biological communities and generate hotspots of productivity and export. We assess the seasonality and phenology of the region, generalize the kilometer‐scale structure of the front, and analyze 69 transects to assess two physical processes of potential biogeochemical importance: cold shelf filament subduction and high salinity Sargasso Sea obduction. We link these processes observationally to meanders in the Gulf Stream and discuss how cold filament subduction could be exporting carbon and how obduction of high salinity water from depth is connected with high chlorophyll‐a. Finally, we report on phytoplankton community composition in each of these features and integrate these observations into our understanding of frontal submesoscale dynamics.

Relation between beluga whale aggregations and sea temperature on climate change forecasts

Climate change has been shown to alter the spatial distribution of whales and other marine mammals. Fast changing ocean temperatures may also affect the spatial distribution of whales at a finer scale, namely within populations, including aggregation behaviour. Our ability to analyze the impact of climate change on whale aggregation behavior, however, has been limited by our ability to collect spatial observation data over large areas. To overcome this limitation, this study analyzed open-access satellite imagery obtained between 2007 and 2020 in Canada, Russia, and Alaska using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to detect 1,980 beluga whales in 11 populations and to quantify their aggregation patterns within their populations. Subsequently, we examined the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST) and the intra-population spatial patterns of beluga whales during summer seasons, when these whales normally aggregate. We detected a negative correlation between SST and the frequency of beluga whale aggregation, suggesting that warming temperatures may impact beluga whale spatio-behavioral dynamics. Considering that the relative abundance of beluga whales is declining and the future SST projections in these Arctic Ocean locations, climate change may pose yet another threat to beluga whales and other ice-dependent species.

Population genomic analysis reveals genetic divergence and adaptation in Brachymystax lenok.

Studying how populations in various environments differ genetically is crucial for gaining insights into the evolution of biodiversity. In order to pinpoint potential indicators of divergence and adaptation to diverse environments, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of 3,491,868 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) derived from five populations of Brachymystax lenok. We discovered significant geographic divergence among these 5 populations, which lack evidence of gene flow among them. Our results further demonstrated that the current distribution pattern of Brachymystax lenok are driven by geographical isolation and changes in oceans and rivers. We also performed genome-wide scan and identified the genes evolved to adapt the different environments, including stress response. In general, these results provide genomic support for high-level genetic divergence and the genetic basis of adaptation to different environments.

Electromechanical enhancement of live jellyfish for ocean exploration.

The vast majority of the ocean's volume remains unexplored, in part because of limitations on the vertical range and measurement duration of existing robotic platforms. In light of the accelerating rate of climate change impacts on the physics and biogeochemistry of the ocean, the need for new tools that can measure more of the ocean on faster timescales is becoming pressing. Robotic platforms inspired or enabled by aquatic organisms have the potential to augment conventional technologies for ocean exploration. Recent work demonstrated the feasibility of directly stimulating the muscle tissue of live jellyfish via implanted microelectronics. We present a biohybrid robotic jellyfish that leverages this external electrical swimming control, while also using a 3D printed passive mechanical attachment to streamline the jellyfish shape, increase swimming performance, and significantly enhance payload capacity. A six-meter-tall, 13 600 l saltwater facility was constructed to enable testing of the vertical swimming capabilities of the biohybrid robotic jellyfish over distances exceeding 35 body diameters. We found that the combination of external swimming control and the addition of the mechanical forebody resulted in an increase in swimming speeds to 4.5 times natural jellyfish locomotion. Moreover, the biohybrid jellyfish were capable of carrying a payload volume up to 105% of the jellyfish body volume. The added payload decreased the intracycle acceleration of the biohybrid robots relative to natural jellyfish, which could also facilitate more precise measurements by onboard sensors that depend on consistent platform motion. While many robotic exploration tools are limited by cost, energy expenditure, and varying oceanic environmental conditions, this platform is inexpensive, highly efficient, and benefits from the widespread natural habitats of jellyfish. The demonstrated performance of these biohybrid robots suggests an opportunity to expand the set of robotic tools for comprehensive monitoring of the changing ocean.
