Pollution Assessment and Spatial Distribution of Heavy Metals in Surface Waters and Bottom Sediments of the Krzna River (Poland)

Due to their toxicity, lack of bioaccumulation and biodegradability, and ease of binding to sediments, heavy metals are considered the main pollutants of rivers. It is, therefore, necessary to control and monitor these pollutants. The present study analyzed the Krzna River, which flows in southeastern Poland and has an outlet to the Bug River. Over much of its length, the Bug River forms Poland’s border with Belarus, while its origin is in Ukraine. The main purpose of the conducted research was a qualitative and quantitative analysis of selected heavy metals, i.e., Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Cu, in bottom sediments and surface waters of the Krzna River. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the level of contamination of the studied matrices and identify the sources of pollution. Eighty samples of water and bottom sediments from the Krzna River were collected for the analysis. Due to the varying distribution of metals under the influence of changes in temperature, precipitation, and humidity, the samples were collected in May and August 2023. The average cadmium content in the sediments studied was the same in both May and August, at 0.6 mg/kg. In contrast, the nickel content of the sediments ranged from 4.6 to 6.1 mg/kg in May and from 4.8 to 6.8 in August. Only nickel and cadmium of the five heavy metals tested were present in amounts exceeding the geochemical background value. Analysis of the results indicates that only a minimal amount of heavy metals remain dissolved in the surface waters, and the remainder contaminates the sediments. The average concentrations of metals in the studied bottom sediments and surface waters were as follows: zinc > lead > nickel > copper > cadmium. The content of metals in the studied sediments was not high, but at the same time, their presence above the geochemical background indicates anthropogenic human activity. Any changes in hydrodynamic conditions and various environmental factors may result in the re-release of heavy metals contained in sediments into surface waters.

Experimental research on the effect of water velocity on phosphorus release from sediments of a plateau cold water type river

The release of phosphorus from sediment is an important source of endogenous phosphorus in water bodies and is an important factor affecting the total phosphorus content in river system. Water velocity is key factor affecting the rate of phosphorus release from sediments. In this paper, the effects of water velocity on the release of phosphorus from sediments in a plateau cold water type river were investigated. The ecological environment of plateau cold water rivers is sensitive and fragile. The changes in environmental conditions can easily lead to changes in the overall water quality of rivers. Therefore, exploring the release process of phosphorus in plateau cold water rivers under changes in hydrodynamic conditions is important for protecting the ecological environment of plateau rivers. The results showed that the release of total phosphorus from sediments followed a first-order kinetic process, when the flow velocity was lower than the threshold velocity of sediments. The total phosphorus release coefficient of sediment linearly increased with increases in water flow velocity. The total phosphorus release coefficient of sediment was related to the flow velocity by kTP20=3.03v/vc+0.08v<vc at 20 °C. The release equilibrium concentration of total phosphorus from the sediment was increased with the increase of velocity. The relationship between the balance concentration of total phosphorus release and water velocity was expressed as Cs20=0.10v/vc+0.04v<vc at 20 °C. The results could provide a quantitative basis for the source term expression of phosphorus release kinetics in the mathematical model of phosphorus transport in the plateau cold water type river.

Hydromorphology of the southern Baltic coastal and transitional waters – New index-based assessment method

The research aimed to develop the complete method for the classification of the hydromorphological status of transitional and coastal water bodies in the southern Baltic region with its adaptation to the current legislation and marine management requirements. The method considers impact and pressure indicators, such as infrastructure and activities carried out in coastal and marine areas, which may affect the change of hydromorphological status and habitat conditions. The methodology covers the change in hydrodynamic conditions, such as the wave regime, sea currents, freshwater inflow, and morphological changes defined by the dominant sediment fraction. The methodology is based on the seven indicators. Administrative, measurement and reanalysis data were used for their classification. The indicators scores were used for the hydromorphological quality index (HQI) calculation. Based on data from 2022, the classification of hydromorphological status showed good status in seven and moderate status in four water bodies.

Large-scale sediment and phosphorus transport in the Three Gorges Reservoir based on a new reservoir operation method

Change of hydrodynamic conditions is a key factor inducing sedimentation, water eutrophication and algal blooms in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). How to mitigate sedimentation and phosphorus (P) retention by improving hydrodynamic conditions in the Three Gorges Reservoir area (TGRA) is an urgent issue in the study of sediment and water environment. In this study, a Hydrodynamic-Sediment-Water quality model for the whole TGRA is proposed considering sediment and P inputs from numerous tributaries, and a new reservoir operation method namely the tide-type operation method (TTOM) is used to investigate the large-scale sediment and P transport in the TGR based on the model. Results indicate that the TTOM can reduce sedimentation and total phosphorus (TP) retention in the TGR. Compared with the actual operation method (AOM), sediment outflow and sediment export ratio (Eratio) of the TGR increased about 17.13% and 1%–3% in 2015–2017, and sedimentation decreased about 3% under the TTOM. TP retention flux and retention rate (RE) decreased about 13.77% and 2%–4%. The flow velocity (V) and sediment carrying capacity (S*) increased about 40% in the local reach. Larger daily water level fluctuation at dam site is more conducive to reducing sedimentation and TP retention in the TGR. Sediment inputs from the Yangtze River, Jialing River, Wu River and other tributaries account for 59.27%, 11.21%, 3.81% and 25.70% of the total sediment inflow during 2015–2017, and TP inputs were 65.96%, 10.01%, 17.40% and 6.63%. In the paper, an innovative method is proposed to reduce sedimentation and P retention in the TGR under the given hydrodynamic conditions and related quantitative contribution driven by the proposed method is analyzed. The work is favorable for expanding the understanding of the hydrodynamic and nutrition flux changes in the TGR, and provides a new perspective for water environment protection and reasonable operation of large reservoirs.

Study on the relationship between hydrodynamic conditions and arsenic content in Quaternary sediments.

Groundwater is susceptible to arsenic contamination by sediment with high arsenic content, which is the primary culprit of regional arsenic pollution and poisoning. To explore the influence of the change in hydrodynamic conditions caused by changes in the sedimentary environment over time on arsenic content in sediments during the Quaternary, the hydrodynamic characteristics and arsenic content enrichment of borehole sediments were studied in typical high-arsenic groundwater areas of the Jianghan-Dongting Basin, China. The regional hydrodynamic conditions represented by each borehole location were analyzed, the correlation between the variation in groundwater dynamics characteristics and arsenic content in different hydrodynamic periods was analyzed, and the relationship between arsenic content and grain size distribution was quantitatively investigated using grain size parameter calculation, elemental analysis, and statistical estimates of arsenic content in borehole sediments. We observed that the relationship between arsenic content and hydrodynamic conditions differed between sedimentary periods. Furthermore, arsenic content in the sediments from the borehole at Xinfei Village was significantly and positively correlated with a grain size of 127.0-240.0μm. For the borehole at Wuai Village, arsenic content was significantly and positively correlated with a grain size of 1.38-9.82μm size (at 0.05 level of significance). However, arsenic content was inversely correlated with grain sizes of 110.99-716.87 and 133.75-282.07μm at p values of 0.05 and 0.01, respectively. For the borehole at Fuxing Water Works, arsenic content was significantly and positively correlated with a grain size of 409.6-655.0μm size (at 0.05 level of significance). Arsenic tended to be enriched in transitional and turbidity facies sediments with normal corresponding hydrodynamic strength but poor sorting. Furthermore, continuous and stable sedimentary sequences were conducive to arsenic enrichment. Fine-grain sediments provided abundant potential adsorption sites for high-arsenic sediments, but finer particle size was not correlated with higher arsenic levels.

Differences in bacterial community composition, structure and function between sediments in waterways and non-navigable channels in a plain river network area.

Bacterial communities greatly help maintain the balance of river ecosystems and are highly sensitive to changes in environmental conditions. Plain river network areas (PRNs) are characterized by dense river networks, low-lying terrain, and slow water flow, where the bottom sediment is frequently disturbed by ship navigation due to the limited water depth and width of waterways, providing a unique ecological niche for bacterial growth. Hence, understanding how bacterial communities in PRNs respond to changes in hydrodynamic conditions, physicochemical parameters, and pollutants under ship navigation is essential to maintaining the stability of inland waterway ecosystems. The Taihu Lake Basin, a typical PRN, was selected to explore the differences in bacterial community composition, structure and function between sediments in waterways (WS) and non-navigable channels (NS). The results indicate that the sediment from NS possessed more diverse and complex bacterial communities than WS. NMDS and ANOSIM analyses further verified the significant differences in bacterial community structure between WS and NS. Combined with LEfSe, we observed the highly differential taxonomy between WS and NS from phylum to order. Moreover, a comparison of beta diversity dissimilarity indices revealed that although species replacement dominated both the WS and NS beta-diversity patterns, species loss caused the differences in the overall beta diversity between them. Variance partitioning analysis revealed that physicochemical parameters (clay content, pH, ORP, and others) and ship traffic volume (STV) were the main driving factors for bacterial community distribution between WS and NS, while pollutants (heavy metals, perfluoroalkyl acids, and others) had a relatively minor influence. PICRUSt2 analysis revealed that the changes in pH, ORP, and STV under ship navigation might inhibit the bacterial ability to metabolize carbohydrates. The results reveal the comprehensive effects of ship navigation disturbance on sediment bacterial communities in the PRN and contribute to further understanding of inland waterway ecosystems.

Erosion-accretion pattern in the tidal-rivers of Indian Sundarban in relation to estuarine hydrodynamics

Mapping the changes in the deltaic-coastal zone under changing hydrodynamic conditions is crucial for developing a concise picture of coastal vulnerability. The present study provides a comprehensive idea of changing scenario of rivers in the world's largest delta-Sundarban, using a variety of remotely sensed data and measurements, and relating these changes to hydrodynamic conditions. Bathymetric changes have also been estimated using Landsat imageries, calibrated with bathymetric chart data. We document a substantial dynamic variation between western and eastern sections of the Sundarban tidal rivers, as well as between the northern and southern parts. As such, banks adjoining the Saptamukhi and Thakuran rivers in the west have accreted by +43.48 ​km2 and +6.13 ​km2 respectively, while the net change in the eastern rivers like Matla, Gosaba, and Hariabhanga river systems shows a loss of −51.54 km2, –13.92 km2, and –13.82 km2, respectively, over the last century. Erosion rates have decreased from the southern seafront zone to the northern interior parts due to the low wave exposure, and high tidal range. The accretion rate has increased on the same ground. The depth of these rivers has also changed significantly. For instance, the depth of most sections along the Thakuran river has increased from 5 to 7 m to about 7–10 m during the period 1987–2016. The findings of this study will help researchers all around the world in understanding the centurial dynamics of tidal rivers, and by comparing these to other deltas, it will be possible to emphasize the relative vulnerability of major deltas to current sea level rise.

Impact of Low-Head Dam Removal on River Morphology and Habitat Suitability in Mountainous Rivers.

Dam removal is considered an effective measure to solve the adverse ecological effects caused by dam construction and has started to be considered in China. The sediment migration and habitat restoration of river ecosystems after dam removal have been extensively studied abroad but are still in the exploratory stage in China. However, there are few studies on the ecological response of fishes at different growth stages. Considering the different habitat preferences of Schizothorax prenanti (S. prenanti) in the spawning and juvenile periods, this study coupled field survey data and a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model to explore the changes in river morphology at different scales and the impact of changes in hydrodynamic conditions on fish habitat suitability in the short term. The results show that after the dam is removed, in the upstream of the dam, the riverbed is eroded and cut down and the riverbed material coarsens. With the increase in flow velocity and the decrease in flow area, the weighted usable area (WUA) in the spawning and juvenile periods decreases by 5.52% and 16.36%, respectively. In the downstream of the dam, the riverbed is markedly silted and the bottom material becomes fine. With the increase in water depth and flow velocity, the WUA increases by 79.91% in the spawning period and decreases by 67.90% in the juvenile period, which is conducive to adult fish spawning but not to juvenile fish growth. The changes in physical habitat structure over a short time period caused by dam removal have different effects on different fish development periods, which are not all positive. The restoration of stream continuity increases adult fish spawning potential while limiting juvenile growth. Thus, although fish can spawn successfully, self-recruitment of fish stocks can still be affected if juvenile fish do not grow successfully. This study provides a research basis for habitat assessment after dam removal and a new perspective for the subsequent adaptive management strategy of the project.

Parametric study of fluidization conditions of bed sediments in the hyporheic zone

AbstractThe phenomenon of fluidization of the bed sediment of the hyporheic zone involves the production of dynamic suspension of solid particles in a stream of water flowing in the direction opposite to gravity. Fluidization may be permanent; then, it becomes a spring or a headwater zone, where groundwater discharge rate is almost unchanged within an entire hydrological year. But it can also occur periodically, depending on the changing hydrodynamic conditions. In such cases, the fluidization of the bed sediment of the hyporheic zone may disturb its functioning by changing the conditions of surface water and groundwater exchange. The disturbances affect hydrodynamic and hydrochemical processes connected with water exchange, but first of all, the living conditions of hyporheic zone flora and fauna. Therefore, the phenomenon of fluidization is significant for broadly understood ecology of the hyporheic zone. The paper presents the analysis of conditions of fluidization occurrence depending on the main hydrodynamic parameters that may affect this process. The authors analysed the influence of the difference in water level between the drained aquifer and the river, the hydraulic conductivity and anisotropy of the aquifer, the vertical hydraulic conductivity in the hyporheic zone, thickness of the hyporheic zone, and the width of the river on the possibility of fluidization of the bed sediment of the hyporheic zone. The range of variability of particular parameters corresponds to the actual variability of those parameters in natural conditions. It was proved that the fluidization of the bed sediment of the hyporheic zone mostly depends on: water level difference, hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer, and value of vertical hydraulic conductivity in the hyporheic zone. The other parameters have little influence on this process.

Modelling Nucleation during Electrodeposition By MODEL Method. Parametric Identification Considering Agitation By Rde or Ultrasound

Nowadays, 40% of the world wide used energy is provided by electric power and this share should reach about 60% by 2040. For environmental reasons, it is crucial to ensure low dissipation loss in power electronic devices by optimizing energy conversion. In the field of renewable energies and automotive electronics, possible energy savings are estimated to be between 20 and 35%. For that purpose, innovative power components and modules are required, with a growing interest for fast and simple joining processes in their fabrication management, in the case for example of the assembly of large-size double-side cooled modules. Several options are possible, including free sintering of metallic pastes or electroforming welding. In all cases, this requires a great control of both surfaces to be joined, mostly prepared by electrodeposition (microstructure, porosity, alloy composition). But the final properties of electrodeposited coatings are strongly dependent of the first nucleation steps, which influence the whole layer structure. In this frame, the modelling of a nucleation process followed by diffusion limited three dimensional growth is an area of promising interest. The study of potentiostatic current transients is a relevant methodology, allowing the determination of several parameters such as nucleation rate, nucleus density, and number of active sites. Different competing models are available, such as Scharifker and Hills [1] and Scharifker and Mostany [2]. By using the model method i.e. the identification of the model parameters by error minimization, it is possible to reach an accurate description of the first layer growth in the case of different metals such as silver and copper. Nevertheless, little attention have been paid to changes in hydrodynamic conditions, for example in the study of current response under forced convection [3]. The present work describes the extension of the model method to the modelling of the first steps of nucleation growth in the case of a sample exposed to an ultrasonic irradiation, which was compared to forced convection induced by a rotating disc electrode at the very same agitation level (equivalent velocity [4,5]. Eventually, the case of electrodeposited alloys was examined, as a function of their Brenner classifications (anomalous and normal codeposition [6]). A combined study of magnetic, granulometric and geochemical properties from lacustrine sediment in the arid Central Asia: Implications for paleoenvironmental variations

Lacustrine sediments in areas of arid Central Asia are sensitive records for paleoenvironmental variations largely associated with the westerlies, targeting the possible transitional linkage between the North Atlantic climate zone and monsoonal eastern Asia. An extensive cognition of paleoenvironmental proxies is a precondition for better deciphering and refining the paleoenvironmental setting. In this study, a combined analysis of magnetic, granulometric and geochemical properties was carried out on lacustrine sediment from the northeastern part of the Yili Basin in northwest China. Results show that magnetic properties within different sedimentary layers may largely respond to the mineral preservation in relation to hydrodynamic inputs and post-depositional alteration. Magnetic concentration was potentially dominated by the input flux of detrital materials, but the depletion of magnetic concentration in the middle part of the section probably arises from post-depositional alteration of the ferrimagnetic phases in sediment with high organic content. This depletion also leads to an enhancement of the fine-grained magnetic phases. Based on the analysis of magnetic and other non-magnetic proxies, three phases of paleoenvironmental variation were identified with regard to the changes in hydrodynamic conditions. Strong hydrodynamic conditions dominated in the lower part of the sections, while there were weaker conditions operated in the middle part of the section, which also underwent post-depositional processes. The upper part of the section experienced undulating hydrodynamic conditions. In addition, this study proposed that the χARM/SIRM ratio possibly has the potential to indicate paleoenvironmental changes and emphasized that the sole usage of magnetic data alone would not deliver comprehensive information of paleoenvironmental evolution. Furthermore, this study also suggests that interdisciplinary study of magnetic transformation in lacustrine sediments is still essential in the future.

Upslope migrating sand waves on sediment-starved shelves: An example from the southeastern continental margin of the Korean Peninsula

An uncharted field of sand waves was discovered in a low-relief submarine canyon incised in the outer shelf on the southeastern continental margin of the Korean Peninsula in water depths of 180–190 m. We characterize the nature and origin of the waves and the sand forming them using sub-bottom chirp profiles, eXpendable bathythermograph (XBT) profile, multibeam echosounder (MBES) data, and sediment samples from four piston cores. Two types of sand waves characterized by distinct height versus wavelength relationships were found in the study area. The sand waves in the upper, narrower part of the shelf-incised canyon are sinuous-crested, with amplitudes of 0.3–2.1 m (mean: ~1 m) and wavelengths of 10–45 m (mean: ~24 m). Their asymmetry indicates migration upslope in a southwesterly direction, opposite to the surface currents. In contrast, the lower part of the canyon that is wider and closer to the margin of the continental shelf hosts nine long (ca. 1 km) curvilinear-crested sand waves with symmetrical crests; these waves likely reflect transient bedforms forming under fluctuating current conditions.The sediment of the sand waves consists of a variable mixture of siliciclastic and carbonate materials. The carbonate fraction (~22–55%; mean: ~34%) is derived mainly from the remains of bryozoans, bivalves, echinoderms, foraminifers, gastropods, and serpulids. Six bioclasts were dated by the radiocarbon method between ca. 41.3 and 11.8 ka BP. These relatively old ages and palaeontological data supports reworking from a shallow-marine environment during the last glacial transgression and limited sedimentation/sediment supply in the study area. The siliciclastic fraction (~44–79%; mean: ~37%) is composed of rounded to subrounded quartz and feldspar of moderate to good sorting and a mean grain size of ~1.3 phi (medium sand). The uppermost ~30 cm of all the sand wave cores reveals a decrease in the grain size of the siliciclastic fraction coupled with an increase in the carbonate/siliciclastic ratio, suggesting episodic sediment reworking and migration of the sand waves in response to fluctuating bottom currents. The coarser sediment that forms the core of the sand waves records bedload transport during periods of stronger currents. Finer carbonate-rich pelagic sediment (i.e., plankton) accumulated at the top of the sand waves during periods of weaker bottom currents. Significantly, our results show that the grain size and mineralogy of the sediment composing the sand waves are controlled by changes in hydrodynamic conditions. Our study provides novel geomorphological evidence for the influence of SW-flowing cold-water incursions (Korean Strait Bottom Cold Water) on the seafloor sediments.

Wind exposure and sediment type determine the resilience and response of seagrass meadows to climate change

AbstractSeagrasses and bare sediment represent alternative stable states, with sediment resuspension being a key driver of system stability via the Seagrass–Sediment–Light (SSL) feedback. We explore the SSL feedback by quantifying the sediment stabilization by seagrass, and using these measurements to calculate under which conditions seagrass ends up in a turbid environment. We quantified in‐situ sediment resuspension velocity thresholds (ucr) for Zostera marina growing in medium to fine sand, using a field flume inducing near‐bed wave motion. ucr was determined for full length shoots, shoots clipped to 0.08 m, and removed shoots. We found that rhizomes did not influence ucr of the top sediment layer. Overall, ucr was linearly related to blade area, which became independent for sediment type when normalizing ucr for the resuspension threshold after shoot removal. Comparing measured ucr against natural wave conditions showed that the seagrass meadow at the study site is currently stable. Exploring the effects of changing hydrodynamic conditions revealed that effects of increasing storminess has limited influence on sediment resuspension and thus the SSL‐feedback. Increasing mean wind velocity had a stronger influence on SSL‐feedback dynamics by causing more frequent exceedance of ucr. The response of seagrasses to increasing wind pressure depends on bay topography. A fully exposed Z. marina meadow under low initial turbidity pressure trended toward bistability, as turbidity pressure increased mainly on bare sediments. The study site and a fully exposed Z. marina meadow under high initial turbidity pressure saw an increase in turbidity across all blade areas.

Behaviour and performance of a dynamic cobble berm revetment during a spring tidal cycle in North Cove, Washington State, USA

In many places, sandy coastlines and their associated assets are at high risk of erosion and flooding, with this risk increasing under climate change and sea level rise. In this context, dynamic cobble berm revetments represent a potentially sustainable protection technique to armour sandy beaches, reduce wave runup and protect the hinterland against wave attack. However, the behaviour and performance of such structures is not well understood. The dynamic cobble berm revetment located in North Cove, WA, USA, was monitored over a spring tidal cycle in January 2019. A representative 60 m alongshore section was monitored over 10 days using 2D laser scanner (lidar) measurements, GPS ground elevation surveys, Radio Frequency Identification of individual cobbles and revetment thickness measurements. These data were used together to assess the dynamic behaviour and functionality of the revetment throughout the experiment. Over the course of the experiment, the surface elevation changed by up to ±0.5 m, and the revetment volume reduced by an average 0.67 m3/m. These changes were found to be caused by relatively large significant wave height and high water levels. The revetment demonstrated a dynamic stability and the capacity to quickly reshape under changing hydrodynamic conditions. The instrumented cobbles were transported along and cross-shore and accumulated at the toe of the revetment, but were never transported seaward of the toe. The revetment also managed to recover some of the lost volume under moderate wave conditions. The revetment behaviour was found to be influenced by variation in the cobble-sand matrix. The underlying sand dynamics – i.e., accumulation or removal of sand within the cobbles – were found to govern the overall volume changes and were important to the overall stability of the revetment. Seven possible transport regimes were identified, and a model of the internal sand dynamics was developed. During the spring tidal cycle measured here, the revetment protected the sand scarp immediately landward and prevented flooding of the hinterland, while armouring the underlying sand. Over time, renourishment will likely be required due to longshore sediment transport, and preliminary guidelines for this and other aspects of design are suggested.

Changing the paleo-depositional environment in the last 2300 years: a study through sedimentology and geochemistry of a sediment core, western Bay of Bengal

The sediment core collected at a water depth of 260.2 m off Mahanadi, western Bay of Bengal was analyzed for grain size fractions, clay minerals, and major and trace elements to understand changing depositional environments, source and processes with time, from ~ 2300 cal yr before present (BP) to the year of the collection (2014). Age was estimated using accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) 14C dates of two planktonic foraminifera samples. The core was divided into six distinct zones based on the significant changes in the sediment components and clay minerals. The presence of higher than average clay and smectite and lower silt and illite, in Zone II (2000 years BP–1070 cal yr BP) and Zone V (300–130 cal yr BP) revealed their deposition in low energy conditions, while, Zone III (1070 to 530 cal yr BP) and Zone VI (132 cal yr BP to present) exhibited higher silt and illite and lower clay and smectite than average suggesting their deposition in a high energy environment. Similar depositional environments observed between Zones II and V and also between Zones III and VI indicated the reoccurrence of similar hydrodynamic conditions with time. Zone II represents the Roman Warm Period and part of the early Medieval Warm Period, while, zone V corresponds to the retreating phase of the Little Ice Age. High Al in zone III and fluctuating trend in zone VI indicates higher Al release along with silt and illite from physical weathering in a cold and arid climate, while, smectite showed a positive correlation with Ti indicating the source of Ti and smectite as basic igneous rocks released during the enhanced southwest monsoon and warm climate. Mn and Zn distribution revealed fluctuations in the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) intensity to changing hydrodynamic conditions and depositional environments. The present study revealed changing depositional environments in the western Bay of Bengal with time with respect to changing material influx, reflecting fluctuating monsoons and climate.

Modelling Nucleation during Electrodeposition By Model Method. Parametric Identification Considering Agitation By Rde or Ultrasound

Nowadays, 40% of the world wide used energy is provided by electric power and this share should reach about 60% by 2040. For environmental reasons, it is crucial to ensure low dissipation loss in power electronic devices by optimizing energy conversion. In the field of renewable energies and automotive electronics, possible energy savings are estimated to be between 20 and 35%. For that purpose, innovative power components and modules are required, with a growing interest for fast and simple joining processes in their fabrication management, in the case for example of the assembly of large-size double-side cooled modules. Several options are possible, including free sintering of metallic pastes or electroforming welding. In all cases, this requires a great control of both surfaces to be joined, mostly prepared by electrodeposition (microstructure, porosity, alloy composition). But the final properties of electrodeposited coatings are strongly dependent of the first nucleation steps, which influence the whole layer structure. In this frame, the modelling of a nucleation process followed by diffusion limited three dimensional growth is an area of promising interest. The study of potentiostatic current transients is a relevant methodology, allowing the determination of several parameters such as nucleation rate, nucleus density, and number of active sites. Different competing models are available, such as Scharifker and Hills [1] and Scharifker and Mostany [2]. By using the model method i.e. the identification of the model parameters by error minimization, it is possible to reach an accurate description of the first layer growth in the case of different metals such as silver and copper. Nevertheless, little attention have been paid to changes in hydrodynamic conditions, for example in the study of current response under forced convection [3]. The present work describes the extension of the model method to the modelling of the first steps of nucleation growth in the case of a sample exposed to an ultrasonic irradiation, which was compared to forced convection induced by a rotating disc electrode at the very same agitation level (equivalent velocity [4,5]. Eventually, the case of electrodeposited alloys was examined, as a function of their Brenner classifications (anomalous and normal codeposition [6]). A Modeling Study on the Influence of Sea-Level Rise and Channel Deepening on Estuarine Circulation and Dissolved Oxygen Levels in the Tidal James River, Virginia, USA

The impact of channel deepening and sea-level rise on the environmental integrity of an estuary is investigated using a three-dimensional hydrodynamic-eutrophication model. The model results show that dissolved oxygen (DO) only experienced minor changes, even when the deep channel was deepened by 3 m in the mesohaline and polyhaline regions of the James River. We found that vertical stratification decreased DO aeration while the estuarine gravitational circulation increased bottom DO exchange. The interactions between these two processes play an important role in modulating DO. The minor change in DO due to channel deepening indicates that the James River is unique as compared with other estuaries. To understand the impact of the hydrodynamic changes on DO, both vertical and horizontal transport timescales represented by water age were used to quantify the changes in hydrodynamic conditions and DO variation, in addition to traditional measures of stratification and circulation. The model results showed that channel deepening led to an increase in both gravitational circulation strength and vertical stratification. Saltwater age decreased and vertical exchange time increased with increases in channel depth. However, these two physical processes can compensate each other, resulting in minor changes in DO. A comparison of the impact of a sea-level rise of 1.0 m with channel deepening scenarios was conducted. As the sea level rises, the vertical transport time decreases slightly while the strength of gravitational circulation weakens due to an increase in mean water depth. Consequently, DO in the estuary experiences a moderate decrease.

The potential of coastal ecosystems to mitigate the impact of sea-level rise in shallow tropical bays

Shallow tropical bays in the Caribbean, like Orient Bay and Galion Bay in Saint Martin, are often sheltered by coral reefs. In the relatively calm environment behind the reefs, seagrass meadows grow. Together, these ecosystems provide valuable ecosystem services like coastal protection, biodiversity hotspots, nursery grounds for animals and enhancing tourism and fisheries. However, sea-level rise imperils these ecosystems and the services they provide because of changing hydrodynamic conditions, with potential effects on the interdependencies between these ecosystems. By means of a hydrodynamic model that accounts for the interaction with vegetation (Delft3D Flexible Mesh), the impact of sea-level rise (0.87 m in 2100) is investigated for three scenarios of future reef development (i.e. keep-up, give-up and catch-up). If coral reefs cannot keep up with sea-level rise, the wave height and flow velocity increase significantly within associated bays, with the wave height doubling locally in case of eroding reefs in our model simulations. Since the presence of seagrass strongly depends on the hydrodynamic conditions, the response of seagrass to the future hydrodynamic conditions is projected using a habitat suitability model that is based on a logistic regression. The spatial character of the bays determines the response of seagrass. In Orient Bay, which is deeper and partly exposed to higher waves, the seagrass will likely migrate from the deeper parts to shallow areas that become suitable for seagrass because of the surf zone moving landward. In contrast, the conditions for seagrass worsen in Galion Bay for the catch-up and give-up scenario; due to the shallowness of this bay, the seagrass cannot escape to more suitable areas, resulting in significant seagrass loss. It is shown that healthy coastal ecosystems are able to limit the change in hydrodynamic conditions due to sea-level rise. Therefore, preserving these ecosystems is key for ensuring the resilience of shallow tropical bays to sea-level rise and maintaining their ecosystem services.
