PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to how the 3-month weight loss program causes the changes in body shape such as body circumferences, cross sectional areas (CSA) and volumes of each segment obtained by a three dimensional anthropometry method. METHODS: Seven males and females (Age:33.3±5.3yrs, Body Height: 167.6±11.9cm, Body Weight: 69.1±14.3kg) participated in this study. They carried out a weight loss program for about 3 months. Before and after the weight loss program, following measurements were carried out. Percent body fat was measured using BODPOD (Life Measurement Instruments).Body Line Scanner (BLS: Hamamatsu Photonics KK) was used for 3D whole body anthropometry. Body circumferences(chest, abdomen, buttock, left upper arm, right upper arm, left thigh, right thigh), CSA, whole body volume and each segmental volume were calculated. After whole body scanning data was divided into 14 segments according to anatomical landmark points, each segmental volume (SV) and segmental volume relative to whole body volume (%SV) were determined. Percent body fat, body circumferences, CSA, SV and %SV were compared between before and after 3-months using %difference (%Diff. =(Before -After)/Before ×100). RESULTS: After 3-months weight loss program, body weight and percent body fat decreased in all subjects (weight: from 69.1±14.3kg to 63.1±14.4kg, %fat: from 26.6±7.0% to 21.4±6.7%; p<0.05). All circumferences decreased by 2.9% - 8.3% (p<0.05). SV decreased in all parts except for foot and hand segments. However, %SV decreased only in trunk and thigh segments. %Diff. of CSA was average-10.1±4.6 % in the trunk segment, however %Diff. of CSA indicated more than -15% in abdomen. CONCLUSIONS: Anthropometric partial changes of thigh and trunk shapes were more pronounced as the results of 3-months weight loss program.
