« The 1 867 Universal Exhibition : an architectural event through the architectural press », by Edouard Vasseur. The Universal Exhibitions offered important objects of study for the architectural reviews, especially in 1 867 thanks to the extensive participation of the European countries. If the material presentation of the papers did not differ then from the current production of these periodicals, in the other hand the editorial choices varied according to the targeted public and the story of the review itself. The width of their reports of the exhibition distinguishes particularly the Gazette des architectes et du bâtiment and the Annales du Génie civil. The Champ de Mars palace, erected under Frédéric Le Play, Sébastien Krantz and Leopold Hardy instructions, had naturally concentrated a great part of the commentators attention, commentators who were even more critical the building had been conceived without consulting the profession, through a public competition. The analysis of this temporary and peculiar building turned into a true speech for a profession, who threatened by the Engineers rivalry, was looking for a way to affirm itself. Very different was the goal of the study, far away to be exhaustive, of the buildings scattered around the palace. Its interest was directly practical : it presented or constructions providing immediate solutions for any Architect interested in stereotyped and modern programs (theater, social housing) or analyses of the relation structure/ornament, in the line of the debates that stirred up the profession since the beginning of the century. Unchangeable documentation for the Universal Exhibitions history, the architectural reviews had nevertheless orientated their analyses following the contemporary debates in order to reveal the most useful results for a profession facing deep changes.
