High speed growth of MAPbBr3 single crystals via low-temperature inverting solubility: enhancement of mobility and trap density for photodetector applications.

There has been growing interest in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites as a promising candidate for optoelectronic applications due to their superior physical properties. Despite this, most of the reported perovskite devices based on polycrystalline thin films suffer immensely from poor stability and high trap density owing to grain boundaries limiting their performance. Perovskite single crystal structures have been recently explored to construct stable devices and reduce the trap density compared to their thin-film counterparts. We present a novel method of growing sizable CH3NH3PbBr3 single crystals based on the high solubility characteristic of hybrid perovskites at low temperatures within inverse temperature crystallization. We compared both the crystallinity of perovskite single crystal structures and optoelectronic charge transport of single crystal photodetectors as a function of dissolution temperature. The performance of the photodetector fabricated with our large-scaled single crystal with high quality demonstrated low trap density, high mobility, and high photoresponse.

Bias effect on surface chemical states of CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskite single crystal: Decreasing CH3NH2 molecular defect

A CH3NH3PbBr3 (MAPbBr3) single crystal was subjected to 2 and 10 V biasing for 10 min under ultra-high vacuum to investigate the bias effect on the surface of MAPbBr3. Under these controlled conditions, we performed high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy on the MAPbBr3 single crystals at photon energies of 460 and 100 eV under synchrotron radiation to obtain core-level and valence structure spectra. The CH3NH2 molecular defect relative intensity area ratio decreased from 22% to 10%. It was assumed that the bias effect can induce a low density of defect states to suppress large defect-pinned energy states at the interfaces.

Structural dynamics of CH3NH3+ and PbBr3\u2212 in tetragonal and cubic phases of CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskite by nuclear magnetic resonance

Understanding the structural dynamics of lead-halide perovskites is essential for their advanced use as photovoltaics.Here, the structural dynamics of the CH3NH3 cation and PbBr6 octahedra in the perovskite CH3NH3PbBr3 were studied via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to determine the mechanism of the transition from the tetragonal to cubic phase. The chemical shifts were obtained by 1H, 13C, and 207Pb magic angle spinning NMR and 14N static NMR. The chemical shifts of the 1H nuclei in CH3 and NH3 remained constant with increasing temperature, whereas those of the 13C and 207Pb nuclei varied near the phase transition temperature (TC = 236 K), indicating that the structural environments of 13C and 207Pb change near TC. The spin–lattice relaxation time T1ρ values for 1H, 13C, and 207Pb nuclei increased with increasing temperature and did not exhibit an abrupt change near TC. In addition, the two lines in the 14N NMR spectra superposed into one line near TC, indicating the occurrence of a phase transition to a cubic phase with higher symmetry than tetragonal. Consequently, the main factor causing the phase transition from the tetragonal to cubic phase near TC is a change in the surroundings of the 207Pb nuclei in the PbBr6 octahedra and of the C–N groups in the CH3NH3 cations.

Unique phonon modes of a CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskite film without the influence of defect structures: an attempt toward a novel THz-based application

The exploration of new physical properties for various THz-based applications, such as THz-wave sensing, modulation, and imaging devices, is a key challenge in the research on organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite materials. These THz-based applications require satisfactory, sensitive, and stable absorption properties with values between 0.5 and 3 THz. To achieve these properties, candidate materials should possess a purified structure that induces regular and fixed phonon modes without any defects or impurities. CH3NH3PbBr3, an organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite thin film produced by a sequential vacuum evaporation method on a flexible PET substrate, was investigated in this study. Although the thin film contains only molecular defects related to CH3NH2 incorporated into the perovskite structure, our THz-wave absorption measurement and first-principles simulation confirmed that these molecular defects do not influence the three phonon modes originating from the transverse vibration (0.8 THz), the longitudinal optical vibrations (1.4 THz) of the Pb–Br–Pb bonds, and the optical Br vibration (2.0 THz). After spin-casting an ultrathin PTAA polymer protective layer (5 nm) on the hybrid perovskite thin film, it was additionally observed that there was no significant effect on the phonon modes. Thus, this novel flexible organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite material is a potential candidate for THz-based applications.

Surface Degradation Mechanism on CH3NH3PbBr3 Hybrid Perovskite Single Crystal by a Grazing E-Beam Irradiation.

To start a step such as some realization of minimized and integrated devices, it requires simply understanding the surface status of hybrid perovskite on the e-beam irradiation because many commercial semiconductor devices are performed with a surface patterning process using e-beam or etching gas. The surface status of CH3NH3PbBr3 (MAPbBr3) single crystal was studied after a grazing e-beam irradiation in an ultra-high vacuum. The prepared hybrid perovskite single crystal was irradiated by the 3 degree-grazing e-beam with energy of 15 kV for 10 min using a reflection high-electron energy diffraction technique. The e-beam irradiation on the MAPbBr3 hybrid perovskite single crystal induced the deformation from MAPbBr3 into MABr, Br2, and Pb on the surface. The gas phases of MABr and Br2 are depleted from the surface and the Pb element has remained on the surface. As a result of the e-beam irradiation, it formed a polycrystalline-like phase and Pb metal particles on the surface, respectively.

Optical and Structural Effects due to the Control of Organic and Inorganic Composition Percentage in CH3NH3PbBr3 Perovskite

The effects of organic and inorganic composition ratio on the synthesis and optical properties of CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskite as nanostructure were studied. The structural and excitonic properties, optical transmission and photoluminescence properties were systematically investigated based on the spectral shift. According to the recent remarkable developments of lead halide perovskite solar cells, investigation of the perovskite crystal structure seems to be necessary. Based on our knowledge, the exact impacts of controlling organic and inorganic composition’s percentage, on the structural and optical properties of the hybrids, are studied for the first time, in this paper. We found some trends of choosing the organic ratio to improve the optical performance and increase the exciton binding energy. Moreover, with decreasing temperature, a red shift (10 nm) occurred in the photoluminescence emission. Furthermore, the photoluminescence spectra peak wavelengths as a function of temperature are linear and have negative slope.

Elastic Constants, Optical Phonons, and Molecular Relaxations in the High Temperature Plastic Phase of the CH3NH3PbBr3 Hybrid Perovskite.

Low frequency dynamics has been studied in a CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskite single crystal by using four different spectroscopy techniques: coherent inelastic neutron, Raman and Brillouin scatterings, and ultrasound measurements. Sound velocities were measured over five decades in energy to yield the complete set of elastic constants in a hybrid halide perovskite crystal in the pseudocubic plastic phase. The C44 shear elastic constant is very small, leading to a particularly low resistance to shear stress. Brillouin scattering has been used to study the relaxation dynamics of methylammonium cations and to evidence translation-rotation coupling associated with the cubic to tetragonal phase transition at Tc ≈ 230 K. Low frequency and highly damped optical phonons observed using both Raman and inelastic neutron below 18 meV, do not present softening close to Tc. The critical dynamics at Tc ≈ 230 K is compatible with an order-disorder character, dominated by relaxational motions of the molecules.

Large-Size CH3NH3PbBr3 Single Crystal: Growth and In Situ Characterization of the Photophysics Properties.

We reported a facile single-solution fabrication method to grow large-scale CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskite single crystal at room temperature. The obtained single crystal in this experiment was 14 × 14 mm. The sample's in situ photophysics properties under dark and illumination, including the surface morphology, work function, surface current distribution, microcosmic I-V curves, as well as the polarization behavior, were in situ characterized by integrated utilization of a scanning probe microscopy, respectively. Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) phase angles indicated the existence of "polarization" in CH3NH3PbBr3 lattice. Interestingly, the "polarization effect" was enhanced by the plus light source. Moreover, a surface potential shift as large as 200 mV was observed under the condition of the illumination on and off. This research is proposed to provide an opportunity to take a fresh look at the architectural design and photovoltaic performance origin of the hybrid perovskite solar cells.

The recombination mechanisms leading to amplified spontaneous emission at the true-green wavelength in CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskites

We investigated the mechanisms of radiative recombination in a CH3NH3PbBr3 hybrid perovskite material using low-temperature, power-dependent (77 K), and temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Two bound-excitonic radiative transitions related to grain size inhomogeneity were identified. Both transitions led to PL spectra broadening as a result of concurrent blue and red shifts of these excitonic peaks. The red-shifted bound-excitonic peak dominated at high PL excitation led to a true-green wavelength of 553 nm for CH3NH3PbBr3 powders that are encapsulated in polydimethylsiloxane. Amplified spontaneous emission was eventually achieved for an excitation threshold energy of approximately 350 μJ/cm2. Our results provide a platform for potential extension towards a true-green light-emitting device for solid-state lighting and display applications.
