A Study on Design, Development and Implementation of MOOCs by Faculty Members in Central Universities of India: Problems and Prospects

Technology is a promising development in education, allowing learning materials to be accessed anytime and anywhere, providing a global learning environment. MOOCs, Massive Open Online Courses, are designed to support unlimited participation of teacher/instructor and learner. Thousands of people can access knowledge disseminated across the globe through MOOCs, which can offer a solution to those who might have a problem limiting or compromising access to the traditional way of formal learning. Purpose: With the new education policy of having a virtual university, the creation of e-content and making them available on digital platforms, the Government of India has taken a step to modernize the education system of India. The creation of MOOCs platform Swayam is a very new initiative taken by the Government of India to promote online learning and offer quality education to people’s doorstep. UGC has urged all the universities to adopt online courses available on the Swayam platform and to motivate faculties to design and deliver MOOCs. The present study investigated the growth of MOOCs at the Swayam platform, and the involvement of Central University (CU) faculty in the design, development and implementation of MOOCs. Methodology: A census survey is conducted among the faculty of Central University, particularly those offering a MOOCs on the Swayam platform. The researchers used the Google Form platform to disseminate the questionnaires and collect responses. Findings: The findings of the study showed the existence of a total of 26 Central University faculty members offering MOOCs on the Swayam platform. Institutional Reputation, Creating National Identity and personal Interest are the factors motivating the design and delivery of MOOCs. The study also revealed the key factors required for designing MOOCs including support from the Institution, Hardware/Software Resources, Time for Designing MOOCs, Availability of Contents (OERs), Learning Contents for the Course, Instructor’s Role, Duration of the Course, Objectives of the Course and Pedagogical Approaches. Lack of Infrastructure is the most common problem faced by the faculty while designing MOOCs. Originality: The study is an original research work conducted using an online questionnaire, and the results drawn are based on the data received from the respondents.

Impact Assessment of Ease and Usefulness of Online Teaching in Higher Education in Post COVID Era

During COVID-19 and its resulting lockdown, the sudden closure of traditional offline classes resulted in the loss of education. Consequently, teaching pedagogies were unexpectedly changed, and a sudden shift towards online teaching was necessitated. The extensive availability of devices and applications made this shift easy. Nevertheless, all teachers were not equally equipped with the equivalent knowledge and resources, which could have affected their behavioral intention to continue online teaching in the future. This paper investigates the perception of university teachers to continue online teaching in higher education post-COVID. To accomplish this target, a mixed research approach was adopted. For quantitative data, 243 questionnaires were successfully collected from teachers of the top five central universities in India, using an online survey through Google forms by integrating the technology acceptance model (TAM). For qualitative data, online-focused group discussions (FGDs) with around seven teachers from different nations’ universities were done. This study is cross-sectional, utilizing TAM factors for ascertaining teachers’ behavioral intentions in India. All hypotheses were found significant by applying PLS-based SEM using smart-PLS software. This indicates that perceived usefulness and ease of use significantly impact attitude towards online teaching; further, perceived usefulness and attitude towards online teaching also significantly affect the behavioral intention of teachers to continue online teaching post-COVID era. The study helps educational institutions and respective national policymakers to define the future course of action in the education sector.

Adoptions of reference management software among the research scholars of India

Background: There were only a few reference management softwares accessible in the 1980s, but presently there are more than 30 reference management softwares available to consumers. Reference management software is an extremely important tool for researchers; it gives error-free references and allows users to move from one referencing style to another in a matter of seconds, such as APA to MLA, MLA to Chicago, and many more. Import, export, highlight, cooperate with others, establish your own library, and so on are all vital functions of reference management software. It also helps us save time. Purpose: The study's purpose was to determine how frequently reference management software is recognized and used in India's central universities. Research Design: The survey method and questionnaire were used to collect data from research scholars at central universities in India. Study Sample: The researchers chose 18 central universities in India, which are offering Ph.D. course in Library and Information Science. Data Collection: 264 out of 347 responses received from respondents. Conclusion: The findings of the study showed that the respondents are aware of reference management software in central universities in India, and hypothesis 1 also proved that library and information science research scholars are aware of reference management software in central universities in India. Suggestion: The study strongly supports the necessity for a training program for the correct use of reference management technologies.

UNIVERSITY STUDENT'S EXPERIENCES AND PROBLEMS TOWARDS ONLIN LEARNING: A STUDY

The main purpose of this present study is to nd out the experiences and difculties faced by the students who are studying in different central universities of India. For this purpose, researcher used descriptive survey method. Student's Experiences and Problem Scale was prepared on the basis of six dimensions. It consists of 51 items and responses were collected on the ve-point rating scale. Sample of this research was 70 students of different central universities of India and they were selected through random sampling technique. The main ndings of the study reveals that the 70% university student's experienced and faced the average Online Learning Problems related to net connectivity, proper electric supply, availability of gadgets like android mobile, laptop and desktop etc. 94.3% students are found in the higher category of Digital Competence and literacy problem. 74.3% university students showed that they experienced problem in Time Management & distractions in online learning. 88.5 % students are found in the average category of nancial problem for online learning like high speed net connectivity and availability of mobile/laptop/desktop. Psychological Issues like improper posture, eye sight problem, headache and poor mental health are found in 95.8% students. The Findings of the study, reveals that online learning fullled the necessities of emergency teaching –learning process but it can't replace the benets of face-to-face mode of teaching –learning process.

Research productivity of newly established central universities in India

Analysis of data retrieved from Scopus database pertaining to 3927 articles published by 12 central universities established during 2010-2019 revealed that there is a considerable growth in scholarly publication during the period. The Central University of Rajasthan has contributed highest number of 765 articles among the 12 universities and the highest growth of publications is in chemistry.

Performance-based evaluation and funding model for central universities in India: a preliminary assessment

The newly adopted performance-based evaluation and funding model is one of the recent quality initiatives taken by the University Grants Commission in India, which aims to improve quality in management and administration of federally funded universities in India. The article critically analyses the 2020 released ranking based on this model and raises some critical observations about the methodology and results of the ranking, discussing the key features of the ranking framework. The findings suggest that universities ranked higher in the National Institutional Ranking Framework and National Assessment and Accreditation Council ratings have performed not at par with their ranks in this target-based methodology. Only one university of 40 could find a place in the ‘outstanding’ category and one university was categorised as ‘poor’. The article goes on to discuss the current state and future directions of central universities in India aspiring to join the ‘world-class’ league.

Science Research in Indian Universities: A Bibliometric Analysis

The paper highlights the research contributions of nine central universities of India, University of Delhi (DU); Aligarh Muslim University (AMU); University of Hyderabad (UoH); University of Allahabad (UoA); Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU); Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI), University of Pondicherry (UoP), Babsaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University(BBAU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), in the field of science in the ten years, 2011-2020, as reflected through SCI, EXPANDED, Web of Science. There were 53617 publications with 796,353 citations, 14.9 citations per publication. The Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, contributed 23.4% of the total publications. RSC advances was the most popular journal among the researchers. The examination of research contributions of specific nations, institutions with the help of bibliometric tools and techniques should be done periodically; this study is valuable in understanding the research contributions of the nine central universities in India in the science discipline. The study helps in identifying core journals in which the researchers publish. It can also be relevant in formulating a framework based on an input-output research model for releasing grants to institutions; thus, this comparative study on research output is meaningful for fund granting bodies.

Perception of Library and Information Science Teachers Towards their Contribution to the Profession in India

The main purpose of the present study is to identify and understand the objectives and factors that influenced LIS teachers to make academic and research contribution towards the profession in India. It also intended to know the opinions of LIS teachers on their overall academic and research contributions towards the profession. A survey approach was used in this study and structured online questionnaire framed. Response was found that out of 353 respondents, 287 (81 %) responses received. The scope of study was confined to in-service teachers of library and information science in state and central universities of India. A total of 287 respondents, 202(70.38 %) was male and 85(29.61) was female. The study found that, the self-interest and professional interest are the major factor responsible for contributing to the LIS field. The self-interest of the LIS teachers has positive direct effect on professional interest and positive indirect effect on overall professional contribution to the LIS field. The professional interest of the LIS teachers has positive direct effect and its positive effect on overall professional contribution to the library and information science profession is statistically significant. It also found that, the overall opinion of LIS teachers on their academic and research contribution towards the profession in India is stating ‘adequate’.

Changes in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education during COVID-19 Lockdown: A Study of LIS Students in India

With the rapid advancement of society, online learning has become more popular in the entire world due to Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic offered almost a total paradigm shift to online teaching and learning across various educational platforms. This paper was aimed at reviewing the teaching and learning changes in higher education during COVID-19 Lockdown using empirical evidence from central universities in India. The study adopted a survey method utilizing an online questionnaire as the primary tool for data collection. The study covered 19 Central Universities in India that are offering Library and Information Science courses. Major findings showed, amongst others, that- most universities provided online classes during the lockdown period; Zoom application was the most utilized for online instructional during the COVID-19 Lockdown; the major difficulty faced by students during the online classes was the lack of internet facilities; the use of webinars in the field of LIS field was considered as an important source of education and learning. Based on these findings, key implications were discussed for the sustainability of LIS teaching and learning in higher education

Research Performance of Indian LIS Faculties from Central Universities: A Scientometric Exploration through the Lens of Web of Science (WoS)

This study explores the research performance of LIS faculties from Central Universities of India through Web of Science using scientometric indicators. It was observed that there were 81 LIS faculties working in 17 Central Universities in India. A total of 157 unique publications were retrieved belonging to 42 LIS faculties from 14 Central Universities. BibliometrixR and VOSviewer were used for analyzing and visualization of data retrieved from WoS. Mukherjee B, of BHU, emerged as the most influential author (faculty) of LIS in terms of publications, citations, h-index and g-index. BHU was the most productive Central University in terms of LIS research. DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology emerged out as the most productive source for LIS research while Scientometrics was the most cited source. “India” and its related terms were central to LIS research as observed from Author’s keyword analysis.

A recipe for Policy research in AYUSH educational and research programs

Yoga, Ayurveda, and Siddha represent the ancient science of healthy living originated in India. Some of the oldest texts from around 5000 years back, such as Vedas and Upanishads, provide evidence of such lifestyle. Many seals and fossils from Indus Valley Civilization authenticate the practice of Yoga in ancient India. According to yogic tradition, Shiva, one of the Hindu Gods, is the first yogi (Adi yogi) and the first teacher (Adi Guru). The meticulous practice of Yoga is widely believed to play a major role to overcome mental and physical suffering and leads to self-regulation, and finally to self-realization or liberation. Since the Pre-Vedic period around 2700 B.C., people started practicing Yoga. Later on, Patanjali Maharshi (between 3rd to 6th centuries BC) systematized and codified knowledge of Yoga through his Yoga Sutras. Later, with the help of many sages and masters, Yoga spread through different traditions, lineages and Guru-shishya parampara. Various Yoga schools viz. Jnana, Bhakti, Karma, Raja, Dhyana, Patanjali, Kundalini, Hatha, Laya, Jain, Buddha, Hatha etc. which follow their own practice, principles and tradition. However, they all lead to the same goal. The history of modern Yoga started in 1893 when the Parliament of Religions was held. After that many yogacharya, teachers and practitioners tried to spread Yoga, not only in India but worldwide (1). One of the milestones in the history of Yoga has been the adoption of the International Day of Yoga. The Honorable Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi addressed the world community on 27th September 2014 in 69 sessions of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) (2). The proposal was approved on 11th December 2014 by 193 members of UNGA to establish 21 June as “International Day of Yoga”. Six months later after passing the resolution and confirmation to establish IDY, the first IDY held in 2015. Several Yogic events were organized and publicized throughout India as well as abroad and got national and international publicity that Yoga has originated from Indian culture. The essential and pivotal role of Yoga in education, pedagogy, curriculum, as well as clinical research has been realized well across the globe (3). To achieve the same, AYUSH Ministry was established November 9, 2014 (http://ayush.gov.in) to facilitate research and educational activity in Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. The existence and excellence of Yoga-based researches in the premier Institutes of India is another milestone towards the implementation of yogic sciences in the academic sphere. Several Yoga departments and centers in the premier Institutes and central universities of India, their existence and establishment, is the result of the consultative meeting on Yoga Education in Universities held in Bangalore on 2nd January 2016, chaired by the Hon’ble Minister for Human Resource Development in the presence of Vice-Chancellors from Indian universities. It was resolved to set up a Department of Yogic Art and Science in the Universities and constitute a committee on Yoga Education in universities to look into various aspects pertaining to setting up of these Departments. Further, collaborative efforts were made to support Psychology, Philosophy, and Yogic Science at different collaborating organizations, by utilizing their respective expertise, knowledge, resources and infrastructure (https://www.nhp.gov.in/list-of-yoga-institutes_mtl). The aim of such centers was to understand deeper knowledge of Yoga philosophy and Yoga therapy based on classical Yogic texts. For the last several years, S-VYASA University has been doing research on evidence-based Yoga & its application, to prevent diseases and to promote positive health (https://svyasa.edu.in/Research_Publications.html). Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsathana (S-VYASA), established in 1986, is a pioneer Institute in the field of Yoga Research. It is the first and foremost Institute with a broad vision of scientifically evaluating yoga, its applications, and policies led by Dr. H R Nagendra.

Influence of intrapersonal and interpersonal religiosity on materialistic attitudes among youths in India: A Structural equation modelling approach

The paper aims at studying the role of intrapersonal and interpersonal religiosity as a predictor of materialistic attitudes (possession, non-generosity and envy) among youths in India using structural equation modelling. Data is collected from 252 students of public-funded central universities in India using simple random sampling. Intrapersonal religiosity is found to predict possession and non-generosity dimensions of materialistic attitudes. In contrast, Interpersonal religiosity is found to be influencing only possession dimension of materialism. Surprisingly, interpersonal religiosity was found to be positively correlated with envy attitudes of materialism among youths in India. The research is expected to help marketers and policymakers to refine their strategies for religious youths in India accordingly.

Integrating Copyright in the Curriculum: A Study of LIS Courses of Central Universities of India

This research aims to study the library and information science (LIS) curriculum presently followed in the central universities of India to identify the ways in which it incorporates copyright information. The central universities offering LIS programs were identified and the curricula and syllabi of these LIS programs were downloaded from the universities’ official websites. A detailed content analysis of the curricula and syllabi shows that there is no uniformity in the names of the courses taught and the course content in LIS programs of different universities. However, copyright has been included in the curriculum as part of a course in most of the universities. Based on the analysis suggestions have been made for the inclusion of copyright concepts in the curricula of LIS programs.

Library Websites of Central Universities in India: A Webometric Analysis

The central university library websites of India and their web impact factor (WIF), website analysis, web links and ranking were investigated in this study. Data were collected by using search engines such as Google, Yahoo and search engine optimisation tools, such as Backlink Watch and SEOquake add-on for Firefox browser. The result of the study indicates that the majority of the central university library websites in India have a higher number of web pages, and the numbers of link pages are less. Suggestions are given to improve the WIF of the examined library websites.

Research Output of Women Faculty Members in Physics: A Scientometric Study of Select Central Universities

This paper examines the research output of women faculty in physics in 10 central universities in India. The data was collected for the period of 2011-15 (5 years). A total of 36 women physics faculty members contributed 282 papers. The study mainly focused on research output, citations, h-index, i10-index, place of women authors when writing papers jointly, proportion of women authors per paper and the central university with highest number of women authors and papers. The results showed that women authors acted as corresponding author more as compared to first or both (first and corresponding). University of Delhi topped the rank in terms of highest women contributors and papers. The ratio of women authors per article was found 0.3. Journal of Applied Physics was found to be the most preferred journal by women authors in Physics.

Mental Health Literacy among University Students

Background: Increasing cases of mental disorders is an alarming situation in the developing countries like India. It needs a careful and serious intervention on the part of government as well as professional psychiatric social worker. The proposed study aims to measure the mental health literacy among the university students. Methods: The survey was conducted among the students of one of the Central Universities of India i.e. Central University of Tamil Nadu Thiruvarur India. The study was based on the random sampling with a sample size of 40. Vignette of a person with depression were given as an example followed by questions. Data were analyzed through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0. Results: Only 32.5% respondents were clearly identified the vignette as a case of depression and most of the respondents (47.5%) were classified the vignette as mental/psychological problem. Marital separation or divorce is most depression contributing factors has been found from the study. Current survey also revealed that non-pharmacological treatment is more beneficial than pharmacological treatment of mental disorder. Conclusion: Result suggested that, there is an immediate action required to improve the knowledge about mental health among the university students. The results have important implications for identification, prevention of mental health problems and improve mental health literacy among the students. Orientation on mental health is required to improve their basic knowledge on this issue.
