Biostratigraphy of Famennian in Hainan Island, South China

On the basis of the faunas including conodonts Palmatolepis gracilis sigmoidalis, P. gracilis gracilis, Polygnathus germanus, which are found for the first time, and corals Cystophrentis kalaohoensis it is confirmed that the Changjiang Formation refers to the Famennian, and may correlate with the Shaodong Formation and Menggongao Formation of central Hunan. This is the only Devonian deposits known in Hainan Island so far. It means that the outstanding problem of whether the Devonian rocks exist in that island is now settled. Meanwhile, the new evidences indicate that the lectostratotype section of Nanhao Formation of Baoting area refers to the Silurian, rather than the Lower Carboniferous as considered by most geologists formerly. Furthermore, the Member 3 of Nanhao Formation at Shilu-Jinbo district is proved to be the Upper Carboniferous, rather than Tournaisian or Middle-Upper Devonian as deemed to be before.

Experimental analysis of ductile-slip rheology in shallow structural level faults

The authors select different grain size samples from granitic body in Weishan, central Hunan, to conduct mylonitization experiments under high temperature (HT) and high pressure (HP), by which the temperature and pressure conditions of mylonitization and microstructures of deformation have been obtained. Through the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of experimental mylonite, we calculate its dislocation density (D), differential rheological stress (Pd) and speed rate of strain (Rs): 3.20x109/cm2, 139.32 MPa and 6.39x10-10/s respectively. The results are in the same magnitude-order with those of natural mylonite from fault zones. By comparison and analysis of chemical compositions and microstructures of different structural environments, the authors establish approximate rheological parameters related to shallow structural level and also suggest the multiple rheological properties and total trend from deep structural level to shallow structural level.

The Late Devonian brachiopodCyrtiopsis davidsoniGrabau, 1923, and related forms from central Hunan of South China

New specimens representing species ofCyrtiopsisGrabau, 1923, described by Grabau (1931a) were recovered in samples from the Late Devonian deposits of the Changlongjie Member of the Xikuangshan Formation in central Hunan Province of South China. Associated Famennian age conodonts and morphotypes of the rhynchonellid brachiopodYunnanellinalineage fix the ranges of species ofCyrtiopsisand related taxa in the Xikuangshan Formation within the interval of the MiddletriangularisZone through the LowercrepidaZone (early Famennian) in central Hunan Province.Detailed study and comparison of external and internal shell structures of the type species ofCyrtiopsisGrabau, 1923, and related species described in Grabau (1931a) shows thatCyrtiopsisfrom South China includes the type species,C. davidsoni(embodied by the holotype), andC graciosa.Both of these species are shown to lack a delthyrial plate. Grabau's paratypes ofC. davidsoniare considered to belong inCyrtiopsis intermediaGrabau, 1931. The speciesC. kayseriGrabau, 1931, andC. shensiensisGrabau, 1931, are also deemed synonyms ofC. davidsoniGrabau, 1923 (as restricted above).“Cyrtiopsis” intermediadiffers from other species ofCyrtiopsisby development of a short delthyrial plate and its systematic position remains uncertain.The genusPseudocyrtiopsisis proposed withCyrtiopsis spiriferoidesGrabau, 1931, as the type.Pseudocyrtiopsisnew genus is distinguished fromCyrtiopsisGrabau, 1923, by its alate hinge and development of a delthyrial plate. Comparisons of species ofCyrtiopsisfrom South China with cyrtospiriferid brachiopods identified asCyrtiopsisby Crickmay (1952) demonstrate that none of the early Famennian species from western Canada can be assigned to the genus as revised here, althoughC. mimetesCrickmay, 1952, is closely related to“C.” intermediaGrabau, 1931.

Microremains of vertebrate near the devonian-carboniferous boundary of Southern China (Hunan province) and their biostratigraphical significance

Microvertebrate remains of chondrichthyans, acanthodians, actinopterygians and sarcopterygians have been collected in three sections of Central Hunan, China. The investigated sections show Upper Devonian formations of which one, the Malanbian Formation, bears localy the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary. The other sections having yielded microremains of vertebrates belong to the Tuzitang and to the top of the Magunao Formations respectively dated as crepida and marginifera conodont zones. A new species of Orodus, O. aramisi nov. sp. is erected and based on a tooth. The significance of these microremains, specially that of chondrichthyans, is analysed. They do not appear to have more importance than other higher taxa for the discussion of the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary in China, elsewhere their importance is questionable. In the Hunan and Guizhou Provinces mainly two taxa, Protacrodus orientalis and Acanthodes guizhouensis could provide pertinent information on the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary and biostratigraphy. Although our present knowledge remains poor, comparisons with Belgian microvertebrate faunas of the same age are tentatively drawn.

Tectonic framework and evolution of southeastern China

In southeastern China, four collision orogenic belts, formed in different geological times, have been recognized. The first is a part of the Circum-Yangtze Jinningide, composed of Yangtze foreland fold-thrust belt, Shexian melange zone, Shuangxiwu arc, Chencai melange zone and overriding blocks. It is a continent-arc-continent collision. The collision event occurred at about 900 Ma. The second is a Paleozoic collision orogen, comprising Central Hunan foreland fold-thrust belt, southern Jiangxi melange zone, Wuyishan arc, backarc melange zone and Dikou overriding basement blocks. The collision event occurred at the end of the Early Silurian. The third is an Indosinian orogen, in which the northwestern Zhejiang and southwestern Fujian foreland fold-thrust belts and Hexi melange zone have been found, but the other units are covered or missing. The fourth is the Fujian Coast Belt in which outcrops of melange zone and I-type granites have been found. The metamorphic ages ranged from 110 to 90 Ma. The collision event may have occurred at the end of Early Cretaceous. These orogenic belts constitute a complex tectonic framework and evolutionary history.

Stable Isotope Geochemistry of the Beishan Stratabound Sphalerite‐Pyrite Deposit, Guangxi

AbstractBased on lead isotope data, it has been shown that lead in the Beishan stratabound sphalerite‐pyrite deposit came mainly from the oldland and its underlying basement rocks and, subordinately, the Devonian itself or the sea water at that time. As to its primary source, upper crust lead was predominant, while lower crust lead or upper mantle lead was subordinate. Sulfur was formed mainly through bacterial reduction of marine carbonates. The carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses for carbonate rocks and minerals have demonstrated that carbonate rocks in the Beishan area are normal marine sediments. The isotopic characteristics of the carbonate rocks are intermediate between those of the northern Guangdong and central Hunan, but closer to those of the central Hunan basin. The formation of the Beishan deposit underwent: a depositional‐diagenetic mineralization stage and a successive post‐diagenetic enrichment‐remoulding one.

On the Discovery ofBothriolepisin the Devonian of Central Hunan*

AbstractA new species of Antiarchi,Bothriolepis sinensisChi (sp. Nov.), was discovered from the Upper (?) Devonian purple shale of Nanmuchung, near Tiaomachien, southeast of the city of Changsha in central Hunan. Besides a detailed palæontological description of the fish, discussions on its stratigraphical position, and on the age of the fossil plants collected from beds eight meters below theBothriolepis‐bed are given. This is the first Devonian Antiarch definitely recorded from the continent of Asia (videP.S. on p.71).
