Synthesis and characterization of polyaniline-based composites using cellulose nanocrystals as biological templates

Polyaniline (PANI) is considered as an ideal electrode material due to its remarkable Faradaic activity, exceptional conductivity, and ease of processing. However, the agglomeration and poor cycling stability of PANI largely limit its practical utilization in energy storage devices. To address these challenges, PANI was synthesized via a facile one-pot, two-step process using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as bio-templates in this work. Zeta potential and particle size measurements revealed that the CNC template could impart improved dispersion stability to the synthesized PANI, which exhibited a decrease in average particle size from 1100 nm to 300 nm as a function of 10 % CNCs. Furthermore, the effect of CNC loadings on the performance of PANI was systematically investigated. The results showed that the specific capacitance of PANI/CNC increased from 102.52 F·g−1 to 138.12 F·g−1 with the CNC loading increase from 0 to 10 wt%. Particularly, the PANI/CNC composite film with a 1:9 ratio (C-P-10 %) demonstrated a capacity retention of 84.45 % after 6000 cycles and an outstanding conductivity of 526 S·m−1. This work generally offers an effective solution for the preparation of high-performance PANI-based composites, which might hold great promise in energy storage device applications.

The Effect of Cellulose Nanocrystal Reassembly on Latex-Based Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Performance.

Different cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) forms (dried vs never-dried) can lead to different degrees of CNC reassembly, the formation of nanofibril-like structures, in nanocomposite latex-based pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) formulations. CNC reassembly is also affected by CNC sonication and loading as well as the protocol used for CNC addition to the polymerization. In this study, carboxylated CNCs (cCNCs) were incorporated into a seeded, semibatch, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/styrene emulsion polymerization and cast as pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) films. The addition of CNCs led to a simultaneous increase in tack strength, peel strength, and shear adhesion, avoiding the typical trade-off between the adhesive and cohesive strength. Increased CNC reassembly resulted from the use of dried, redispersed, and sonicated cCNCs, along with increased cCNC loading and addition of the cCNCs at the seed stage of the polymerization. The increased degree of CNC reassembly was shown to significantly increase the shear adhesion by enhancing the elastic modulus of the PSA films.

Optimization of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) concentration in polycaprolactone bio-composites for bio-plotting: a robust interpretation of the reinforcement mechanisms

Bioabsorbable and biodegradable composites have experienced rapid growth, owing to their high demand in the biomedical sector. Polymer-cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) compounds were developed using a medical-grade poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) matrix to improve the stiffness and load-bearing capacity of pure PCL. Five PCL/CNCs filament grades were melt-extruded, pelletized, and fed into an industrial bioplotter to fabricate specimens. To assess the effects of CNCs on pure PCL, 14 tests were conducted, including rheological, thermomechanical, and in situ micro-mechanical testing, among others. The porosity and dimensional accuracy of the samples were also documented using micro-computed tomography while scanning electron microscopy was employed for morphological characterization. Overall, the 4.0 wt % CNCs loading accomplished the optimum mechanical response, with an increase in its tensile (19.1%) and flexural strength (12.6%) compared to pure PCL. Concurrently, this grade exhibited the highest MFR, minimum porosity, and highest nominal-to-actual geometric accuracy, thereby convincingly interpreting the reinforcement mechanisms.

Interpenetrating and semi-interpenetrating network superabsorbent hydrogels based on sodium alginate and cellulose nanocrystals: A biodegradable and high-performance solution for adult incontinence pads

Superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs) are essential in various applications, including hygienic products like adult incontinence pads. However, synthetic-based super absorbent polymers (SAPs) dominate the market despite being non-biodegradable. Alternatively, bio-based hydrogels, such as sodium alginate (SA)-based hydrogels, offer biodegradable alternatives. In this study, we aimed to enhance the practical applied properties of SA-based hydrogels by grafting SA with acrylic acid (AA) and incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Specifically, we investigated the potential of interpenetrating network (IPN) and semi-interpenetrating network (S-IPN) hydrogels as absorbent materials in adult incontinence pads. The fabricated SAHs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). They were also evaluated for absorption and rheological properties. The results showed that in IPN/SAHs, the addition of CNCs decreased pore sizes, while in S-IPN/SAHs, CNC incorporation increased pore sizes. The S-IPN/SAHs exhibited a significantly higher free swelling capacity (FSC) with CNCs loading, reaching 142.29 g/g in 0.9 % NaCl solution and 817.4 g/g in distilled water. On the other hand, IPN/SAHs showed a higher storage modulus and lower loss modulus compared to S-IPN/SAHs. Notably, the superior samples from this study showed a 33 % reduction in SAP consumption compared to commercial SAPs, making them more cost-effective for adult incontinence pad manufacturers. Overall, our research demonstrates the potential of interpenetrating and semi-interpenetrating network superabsorbent hydrogels as high-performance absorbent materials. The results offer improved absorbency and cost savings for producers of adult incontinence pads, and bio-based hydrogels like SA-based hydrogels are promising biodegradable alternatives to synthetic-based SAPs.

Development of chitosan/rice protein hydrolysates/ZnO nanoparticles films reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals

In the present work, the composite films were obtained by the solution casting method from chitosan and rice protein hydrolysates, reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) of different contents (0 %, 3 %, 6 % and 9 %). The influence of different CNC loadings on the mechanical, barrier and thermal properties was discussed. SEM showed the formation of intramolecular interactions between the CNC and film matrices, leading to more compact and homogeneous films. These interactions had a positive influence on the mechanical strength properties, which was reflected in higher breaking force of 4.27 MPa. The elongation dwindled from 132.42 % to 79.37 % with increasing CNC levels. The linkages formed between the CNC and film matrices reduced the water affinity, leading to a reduction in their moisture content, water solubility and water vapor transmission. Thermal stability of the composite films was also improved in the presence of CNC, by increasing maximum degradation temperature from 311.21 to 325.67 °C with increasing CNC contents. The strongest DPPH inhibition of the film was 45.42 %. The composite films exhibited the highest inhibition zone diameter against E. coli (12.05 mm) and S. aureus (12.48 mm), and the hybrid of CNC and ZnO nanoparticles exhibited stronger antibacterial activity than their single existent forms. The present work shows the possibility of obtaining CNC-reinforced films with improved mechanical, thermal and barrier properties.

Rendering Polyurethane Hydrophilic for Efficient Cellulose Reinforcement in Melt‐Spun Nanocomposite Fibers

AbstractMany commodity plastics, such as thermoplastic polyurethanes (PUs), require reinforcement for use as commercial products. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) offer a “green” and scalable approach to polymer reinforcement as they are exceptionally stiff, recyclable, and abundant. Unfortunately, achieving efficient CNC reinforcement of PUs with industrial melt processing techniques is difficult, mostly due to the incompatibility of the hydrophobic PU with hydrophilic CNCs, limiting their dispersion. Here, a hydrophilic PU is synthesized to achieve strong reinforcement in melt‐processed nanocomposite fibers using filter paper‐sourced CNCs. The melt‐spun fibers, exhibiting smooth surfaces even at high CNC loading (up to 25 wt%) indicating good CNC dispersion, are bench‐marked against solvent‐cast films—solvent processing is not scalable but disperses CNCs well and produces strong CNC reinforcement. Mechanical analysis shows the CNC addition stiffens both nanocomposite films and fibers. The stress and strain at break, however, are not significantly affected in films, whereas adding CNCs to fibers increases the stress‐at‐break while reducing the strain‐at‐break. Compared to earlier studies employing a hydrophobic (and stiffer) PU, CNC addition to a hydrophilic PU substantially increases the fiber stiffness and strength. This work therefore suggests that rendering thermoplastics more hydrophilic might pave the way for “greener” polymer composite products using CNCs.

Date Palm Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNCs)/Polyamide Composites: Tailoring Morphological, Mechanical, and Thermal Properties

In the present study, polyamide (PA) was successfully reinforced with cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) prepared from date palm leaves using two different techniques, electrospinning and the solution casting method, and a comparative study of these two systems was performed. The morphological, thermal, wetting, and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were analyzed for CNC content between 0 and 5 wt%. Morphological analyses showed different roughness in the fractured surface of neat PA and its nanocomposites after the addition of CNC. The modified composite is found to have a smooth surface without cracks and showed increased roughness with greater hydrophilicity and thermal stability. The nano-indentation results showed that the highest hardness was obtained at 5% CNC loading for the solution cast composite samples, which could be related to the relatively good CNC dispersion with good filler matrix bonding as evidenced by the morphological characterization. We also observed that the electrospinning technique produced nanocomposites of better thermo-physical properties than the solution cast method. The results point to the prospect of the development of nanocomposite films using date-palm-leaf-derived CNC incorporated in PA for high-performance and advanced material applications such as membranes.

Preparation of cellulose nanocrystal (CNCs) reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) bionanocomposites filaments using biobased additives for 3D printing applications.

This work presents the experimental steps taken towards the preparation of 3D printable bionanocomposites using polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymer containing 0.1, 0.5 and 1 wt% CNCs. Optimized amounts of bio-based additives were added to improve the processability and flexibility of the bionanocomposites. The 3D printable bionanocomposite filaments were drawn using a single screw extruder. The bionanocomposites filament was used to 3D print prototypes and test specimens for dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Characterization of the CNCs and bionanocomposites was performed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The nucleating effect of CNCs enhanced the crystallization behaviour of bionanocomposites by 5%, 15% and 11%, for the different CNCs loadings. The TGA analysis revealed a ∼20 °C improvement in the thermal stability of the bionanocomposites. Meanwhile, the tensile analysis showed a ≥48% increase in the tensile strength of the bionanocomposites filaments which was attributed to the reinforcing effects of CNC. The addition of CNCs significantly increased the melt viscosity, storage and loss modulus of PLA. In summary, the bionanocomposite filaments produced in this study exhibited excellent processibility and superior mechanical and thermal properties.

Effect of cellulose nanocrystals on the properties of the photoactive aloe emodin poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) packaging film

AbstractIn recent years, there has been increasing interest in photoactive packaging materials, which inactivate bacteria via the photoactivation of light‐sensitive compounds. One of the existing challenges is the reduced stability and efficacy of these materials due to light exposure. In this study, the effect of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) loading on the antimicrobial, barrier, and mechanical properties of the photoactive poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) packaging film has been investigated. The film (CNC‐AE‐PHBV) is composed of aloe emodin (AE) and PHBV at the ratio of 540.48 µg g−1, and CNC. The weight percentage of CNC loading relative to PHBV is varied from 0.5% to 2.0% (w/w). The results show that CNC mitigates the photodegradation of AE in the polymeric matrix and the highest protection is obtained at 0.5% of CNC loading. CNC also augments the hydrophilicity of CNC‐AE‐PHBV films, indicated by the decrease of water contact angle (78°–71.0°). These effects could have led to the increased retention of photodynamic efficacy against Escherichia coli (~4.5 log cycles) of the CNC‐AE‐PHBV films after repeated light irradiation. Nevertheless, no improvement in the barrier as well as mechanical properties of the films has been observed. The findings evidence the important enhancement effect of CNC on the efficacy of photoactive polymer, which can be further explored for developing future antimicrobial packages.

Wholly Biobased Polyamide Thermoplastic Elastomer‐Cellulose Nanocomposites

AbstractPolymers play a prominent role in daily lives; however, there is a growing concern on the depleting fossil resources triggering the research for sustainable alternatives. Here, novel wholly biobased nanocomposites are prepared from polyamide 36,36 (PA36,36) thermoplastic elastomer and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Further, the influence of CNC addition and CNC loading on the morphological features, thermal and mechanical properties of PA36,36 is studied. The presence of CNC in PA36,36 affects the thermal degradation of PA36,36. The additions of 10 and 30 wt% CNCs to the PA36,36 improve the tensile strength and Young's modulus by up to 700% and 750% to 9.6 and 6.8 MPa, respectively, while still maintaining relatively high elongation at break values. The hardness of the polymer increases significantly after the inclusion of CNC. The PA36,36/CNC nanocomposites also show relatively good resilience when exposed to 100% strain. Overall, these biobased thermoplastic elastomer nanocomposites can be potential alternatives for some existing rubbers with low or medium hardness.

Rheological properties of cellulose nanocrystal suspension

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is a unique nanomaterial that have received considerable attention due to its good individual mechanical properties and was proven as a good reinforcing filler to various polymer matrix. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), have been widely used for lots of application like automobile, aerospace and medical industries. However, because of its chemical structure, TPU have significant deficiencies like low tensile strength as working with high force application. Thus, CNC has been used to overcome this limitation. This research was conducted to investigate the rheological properties of CNC in TPU and water matrix. CNC were obtained from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) via sulphuric (CNC-S) and phosphoric (CNC-P) acid hydrolysis. CNCs (1 wt%, 2 wt% and 5 wt%) were dispersed in TPU and water matrix. CNC produced and its suspension were undergoing Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and rheological test to identify the morphology and rheological behaviour respectively. CNC-S obtained has diameter of 17 ± 4 nm and length of 225 ± 100 nm, while CNC-P has diameter of 20 ± 5 nm and length of 231 ± 127 nm. The aspect ratio for CNC-P and CNC-S are 11 and 13 respectively. The rheology properties like viscosity of CNC-S were compared to CNC-P in both matrices. The viscosity of the TPU/CNC-S and TPU/CNC-P solutions recorded highest value at 5 wt% of CNC loading similar result was recorded as well in water matrix. In TPU, at shear rate of 0.1 s−1, the viscosity of TPU/CNC-S is 192.1 Pa.S and TPU/CNC-P solution is 173.4 Pa.S. Meanwhile, in aqueous suspension, at shear rate of 0.1 s−1, the viscosity of CNC-P recorded higher value than CNC-S suspension at 772,800 Pa.S and 1045 Pa.S respectively. This has proven that type of acid in CNC production and suspension matrix influence the rheological properties of CNC suspension.

Foaming of Polylactic Acid/Cellulose Nanocrystal Composites: Pickering Emulsion Templating for High-Homogeneity Filler Dispersions

Polylactic acid (PLA)/cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) composite foams have attracted much attention due to their biodegradability and potential to replace petroleum-based foams. However, the dispersion of (unmodified) CNCs in PLA remains challenging. Here, we used the Pickering emulsion templating method of unmodified CNCs to stabilize PLA microspheres and prepare a concentrated masterbatch. This masterbatch was used in conventional melt blending of pristine PLA to obtain well-dispersed CNCs in PLA with a CNC loading of up to 5 wt %. In comparison, PLA/CNC composites prepared by direct melt blending of CNCs in PLA showed visual agglomerates of CNCs. PLA/CNC composites were batch foamed with CO2 as a physical blowing agent. We demonstrate that the good CNC dispersion obtained by the Pickering emulsion route is favorable for preparing PLA foams with smaller and more uniform cell sizes and with a higher cell density. These results demonstrate that the Pickering emulsion approach to prepare CNC masterbatches for subsequent dispersion in thermoplastics by conventional processing seems promising for numerous industrial applications.

Rheological Percolation of Cellulose Nanocrystals in Biodegradable Poly(butylene succinate) Nanocomposites: A Novel Approach for Tailoring the Mechanical and Hydrolytic Properties.

Although biodegradable plastics are gradually emerging as an effective solution to alleviate the burgeoning plastic pollution, their performance is currently trivial for commercialization. A proposed two-pronged strategy to overcome this limitation includes (1) preparation of the nanocomposites from biorenewable nano-fillers to preserve their biodegradability and (2) tailoring their properties to meet the diverse demands in various applications. Herein, we report the preparation of biodegradable nanocomposites composed of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) (loading of 0.2–3.0 wt%) and propose a rheological strategy to tailor their performances. Depending on the shear frequencies, the rheological evaluation revealed two percolation thresholds at approximately 0.8 and 1.5 wt%. At high shear frequencies, the disappearance of the first threshold (0.8 wt%) and the sole persistence of the second one (1.5 wt%) indicated the collapse of the immature network of partially interconnected CNCs. The tensile and hydrolytic properties of the nanocomposites were found to undergo drastic changes at the thresholds. The tensile strength increased by 17% (from 33.3 to 39.2 MPa) up to 0.8 wt% CNC loading. However, the reinforcing efficiency of CNC decreases sharply with further incorporation, reaching nearly zero at 1.5 wt%. On the other hand, hydrolytic degradation of the nanocomposites was rapidly accelerated above 1.5 wt% CNC loading. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the rheological properties of nanocomposites is essential for the design and development of materials with tailored properties.

Cellulose Nanocrystals Influence Polyamide 6 Crystal Structure, Spherulite Uniformity, and Mechanical Performance of Nanocomposite Films

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are an ideal reinforcing agent for polymer nanocomposites. CNCs can form hydrogen bonds with polyamide 6 (PA6); however, the direct effects of unmodified CNCs on PA6 morphology and crystal structure have not been fully elucidated. This work investigated the influence of CNCs on the mechanical performance and physicochemical properties of spin-coated CNC–PA6 films through quantitative analysis using techniques that probe multiple length scales. CNCs interacted with PA6 to induce the γ (chiral) allomorph over the α allomorph at low CNC loadings (≤1 wt %) and nucleated a high density of small uniform spherulites, leading to stiffer nanocomposites. Higher loadings caused CNC aggregation and crystalline, non-spherulitic features. Overall, we hypothesize that the reinforcement mechanism of CNCs in PA6 is dominated by morphological changes in the matrix, not percolation. Understanding CNC–polymer interactions and morphology (on films prepared without thermal processing or surface modification of CNCs) offers “design rules” for how to incorporate CNCs into nanocomposites for optimized material performance in various applications, for example, membranes, coatings, and packaging.

Polymeric Composite Matrix with High Biobased Content as Pharmaceutically Relevant Molecular Encapsulation and Release Platform.

Drug delivery systems (DDS) that can temporally control the rate and extent of release of therapeutically active molecules find applications in many clinical settings, ranging from infection control to cancer therapy. With an aim to design a locally implantable, controlled-release DDS, we demonstrated the feasibility of using cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-reinforced poly (l-lactic acid) (PLA) composite beads. The performance of the platform was evaluated using doxorubicin (DOX) as a model drug for applications in triple-negative breast cancer. A facile, nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method was adopted to form composite beads. We observed that CNC loading within these beads played a critical role in the mechanical stability, porosity, water uptake, diffusion, release, and pharmacological activity of the drug from the delivery system. When loaded with DOX, composite beads significantly controlled the release of the drug in a pH-dependent pattern. For example, PLA/CNC beads containing 37.5 wt % of CNCs showed a biphasic release of DOX, where 41 and 82% of the loaded drug were released at pH 7.4 and pH 5.5, respectively, over 7 days. Drug release followed Korsmeyer's kinetics, indicating that the release mechanism was mostly diffusion and swelling-controlled. We showed that DOX released from drug-loaded PLA/CNC composite beads locally suppressed the growth and proliferation of triple-negative breast cancer cells, MBA-MB-231, via the apoptotic pathway. The efficacy of the DDS was evaluated in human tissue explants. We envision that such systems will find applications for designing biobased platforms with programmed stability and drug delivery functions.

Incorporating Hydrophobic Cellulose Nanocrystals inside Latex Particles via Mini‐Emulsion Polymerization

AbstractHydrophobic cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are encapsulated inside poly(butyl acrylate/vinyl acetate/acrylic acid) latex particles via mini‐emulsion polymerization (MEP). To achieve a genuine MEP, the effects of the concentration of surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate/Disponil A3065) and a hydrophobic agent (octadecyl acrylate (ODA)) are optimized in the presence of 0.5 wt% CNC. Using a combination of surfactant and ODA concentrations leading to a particle nucleation method restricted to the monomer droplets, the effects of CNC loading up to 1.5 wt% on the polymerization process and final nanocomposite properties are studied. Despite an increase in particle size and a lower rate of polymerization at higher CNC loadings, the droplet nucleation mechanism remains dominant up to 1.25 wt% CNC loading. Pressure‐sensitive adhesive (PSA) performance for nanocomposites produced using hydrophobic CNCs in MEP decreases whereas performance improves considerably when using hydrophilic and partially hydrophobic CNCs in conventional emulsion polymerization. These results shed light on emulsion polymerization technique selection and CNC surface properties for greener industrial production of water‐based PSAs.

How latex film formation and adhesion at the nanoscale correlate to performance of pressure sensitive adhesives with cellulose nanocrystals.

Emulsion polymerized latex-based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are more environmentally benign because they are synthesized in water but often underperform compared to their solution polymerized counterparts. Studies have shown a simultaneous improvement in the tack, and peel and shear strength of various acrylic PSAs upon the addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). This work uses atomic force microscopy (AFM) to examine the role of CNCs in (i) the coalescence of hydrophobic 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate/n-butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate (EHA/BA/MMA) latex films and (ii) as adhesion modifiers over multiple length scales. Thin films with varying solids content and CNC loading were prepared by spin coating. AFM revealed that CNCs lowered the solids content threshold for latex particle coalescence during film formation. This improved the cohesive strength of the films, which was directly reflected in the increased shear strength of the EHA/BA/MMA PSAs with increasing CNC loading. Colloidal probe AFM indicated that the nano-adhesion of thicker continuous latex films increased with CNC loading when measured over small contact areas where the effect of surface roughness was negligible. Conversely, the beneficial effects of the CNCs on macroscopic PSA tack and peel strength were outweighed by the effects of increased surface roughness with increasing CNC loading over larger surface areas. This highlights that CNCs can improve both cohesive and adhesive PSA properties; however, the effects are most pronounced when the CNCs interact favourably with the latex polymer and are uniformly dispersed throughout the adhesive film. Effect of extrusion, batch-mixing, and co-coagulation on the dispersion of CNCs in natural rubber - CNC nanocomposites

In a bid to develop environmentally-friendly rubber materials, the use of renewable and sustainable additives that could provide suitable mechanical property enhancement is of great interest. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are employed as reinforcing fillers due to their availability, sustainability, and excellent mechanical properties. Various processing methods of natural rubber (NR) – CNCs nanocomposite formulations were anticipated to provide varying levels of dispersibility and hence physical properties. The effects of batch mixing, co-coagulation, and extrusion processing methods have been investigated and compared on the dispersion of CNCs in NR. Various physical property testing methods were also employed to understand the effects of the processing on the NR-CNC vulcanizates. While co-coagulation and extrusion provided improved reinforcement of the nanocomposites attributed to the optimal dispersion of CNCs, batch mixing processed samples exhibited poor dispersion even at low CNCs loadings as observed from transmission electron microscopy and inferior composite properties.

Effects of Cellulose Nanocrystal and Inorganic Nanofillers on the Morphological and Mechanical Properties of Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D-Printed Photopolymer Composites

Photopolymer composites filled with cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and/or inorganic nanofillers were fabricated by using digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. To investigate the effects of different CNC lyophilization concentrations and behaviors of CNC particles in the photopolymer composites, morphological and mechanical properties were analyzed. CNC loading levels affected the morphological and mechanical properties of the filled composites. Better CNC dispersion was seen at a lower lyophilization concentration, and the highest mechanical strength was observed in the 0.25 wt% CNC-filled composite. Furthermore, nano-precipitated calcium carbonate (nano-PCC) and nanoclay were added to photocurable resins, and then the effect of inorganic nanofillers on the morphological and mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated. By analyzing the morphological properties, the stress transfer mechanism of nano-PCC and nanoclay in the photopolymer composites was identified and related models were presented. These supported the improved mechanical strength of the composites filled with CNC, nano-PCC, and nanoclay. This study suggested a new approach using wood-derived cellulose nanomaterials and inorganic nanofillers as effective fillers for DLP 3D printing.

Mechanical and thermal properties of cellulose nanocrystals from jute fibers reinforced epoxy composites

This study investigated the effects of loadings of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) extracted from jute fibers on the chemical, mechanical and thermal properties of the Epoxy matrix. The CNC/Epoxy composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, tensile tests, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. Experimental results showed that the tensile strength, modulus, and work of fracture showed a statistically significant increase from 1 to 5 wt.% CNC loading. In addition, TG measurements revealed that the onset temperature (Tonset) and temperature at maximum decomposition rate (Tmax) for composites decreased compared to neat epoxy with increasing CNC concentration. Dynamic mechanical analysis studies showed that the storage modulus values at 35 °C and 120 °C decreased for lower 1 wt% CNC content sample compared to neat epoxy, then increased for samples loaded with 3 and 5 wt% of CNC.
