Collision Tumour of Combined Neuroendocrine and Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinus- Case Report and Review of Literature.

There have been many disputes about the definition, diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of collision tumours. We describe a rare patient with a collision tumour consisting of high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the right nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. She received surgery, concurrent chemoradiotherapy, and then two cycles of palliative chemotherapy. Follow-up at 26 months after diagnosis showed that this patient experienced a complete response with no signs of recurrence or metastasis. A literature review of previous 27 cases diagnosed with collision tumour of NEC and SCC in the head and neck was also undertaken. It is highly challenging to manage collision tumours because these are two morphologically and etiologically distinct tumours. Well-designed multimodality therapy including surgery and chemoradiotherapy might lead to a long survival in these patients.

Complete remission after radiotherapy in a patient with basaloid squamous cell cancer of the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus – case report and review of literature

<b>Aim:</b> The aim of our study is to describe the case of a patient suffering from squamous cell carcinoma of the basaloid nasal cavity, who achieved complete recurrence remission after palliative radiotherapy. </br></br> <b> Case report:</b> We present a clinical case of a patient suffering from basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity who achie-ved a complete remission of local recurrence following a palliative radiotherapy. In November 2011 the patient underwent a radical, block resection of the tumor withing the nasal cavity and right paranasal sinuses, with margin sampling. The recurrence occurred in June 2012. As she did not qualify for rescue therapy, she received 2 courses of radiation, spaced 6 months apart – 20 Gy in 5 fractions each. A complete remission lasting until 2016 was achieved. Progression free survival from the first series of palliative radiotherapy was 45 months. Overall survival since the diagnosis was 69 months (62 months since the recurrence was diagnosed). </br></br> <b>Discussion:</b> We have conducted a literature review regarding therapeutic options and prognosis and compared it with our case. Basaloid squamous cancer is more aggressive than other squamous cancers. Previous case studies and case series descri-be this type of the disease being treated with surgery, radiation or various multimodality protocols including chemoradiation, surgery followed by radiation and others. </br></br> <b>Conclusions:</b> A conclusion was drawn that the best results were reported in studies which based their therapeutic strategy on radiotherapy.

Primary Small Cell Carcinoma in Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses: 15 Cases From a Single Center.

Small cell carcinoma (SCC) in the nasal cavity and sinuses is extremely rare. The clinical data of 15 patients with primary SCC in nasal cavity and sinuses were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were treated with surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Of the 15 patients, 2 patients are alive for more than 6years, and 5 patients died after the median follow-up period (11months). Most of our patients represent the later stage (73% presented at stage III or IV) and had surgery combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy; however, nearly half of patients have tumor recurrence and/or distant metastasis. SCC of nasal cavity and sinuses often invades surrounding tissues, and the long-term curative rate is generally low. Early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment are key to improve survival. Although the overall survival time of SCC is not optimistic, it is still recommended that patients take comprehensive treatment.

Clinical analysis of multimodal treatment for orbital organ preservation in T4b squamous cell carcinoma of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses

To investigate the efficacy of induction chemotherapy (ICT) followed by concurrent chemotherapy and helical tomotherapy (HT) in the patients with T4b squamous cell carcinoma of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus (SCCNP) for orbital organ preservation and high quality of life. A total of 26 patients with the orbital involvement of T4b SCCNP between May 2008 and March 2013 were analyzed retrospectively. There were 17 males and 9 females; the average age was 54.7 years. The median follow-up time was 25 months (range 4-77 months). The patients received 1-2 cycles ICT with TP (docetaxel 70 mg/m(2) on day 1 and cisplatin 40 mg/m(2) on day 1-2, every 3 weeks) or TPF (docetaxel 70 mg/m(2) on day 1 and cisplatin 70 mg/m(2) on day 1-2, 5-fu 700 mg/m(2) on day 1-5, every 3 weeks), followed by concurrent HT (60-70 Gy) and chemotherapy with TP and/or epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to determine the 3-year overall survival rate and local control rate. Side-effects were evaluated with the established common terminology criteria for adverse events (CTCAE) version 4.0 criteria. All patients completed the planned chemotherapy and 96.2%(25/26)patients completed the planned radiotherapy. The 3-year overall survival rate, the local control rate and real orbital preservation rate were 56.7%, 79.5% and 80.0% respectively. The most common acute side effects higher than grade 2 were oral mucositis, radiodermatitis and dry eye syndrome. The strategy including ICT followed by CCRT and/or EGFR inhibitor is an effective treatment for T4b SCCNP patients, with minimal toxicities, higher 3-year OS rate and orbital preservation rate, and also provides a new treatment option for T4b SCCNP patients.

A Case of Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Nasal Cavity Treated with Conversion to Sirolimus in a Patient with Kidney Transplantation

Conversion of immunosuppressants to sirolimus, an inhibitor of mammalian target of rapamycin, is a useful treatment option for prevention of the adverse events of immunosuppressants such as calcineurin inhibitor in renal transplantation recipients. In addition, sirolimus has been improving the quality of life and increasing the survival of patients with renal transplantation by decreasing immunosuppression-related malignancies, particularly skin cancer. However, complete remission of skin squamous cell carcinoma after renal transplantation only by conversion to sirolimus has not been well reported, although its preventive effect on skin cancer is well known. We report on a 72-year-old male with squamous cell carcinoma in his nasal cavity consequent to renal transplantation, which was treated completely with the conversion of cyclosporine to sirolimus without surgical removal or chemotherapy.

Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Nasal Cavity with Neural-Type Rosettes: A Diagnostic Challenge

BSCC is a well defined variant of Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) with an aggressive behaviour. It grows in the upper respiratory tract mostly, but it has been seldom reported to occur in the sinonasal tract; mucous of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. We report here the case of a male with a right nasal cavity tumour with obstruction and some nasal bleeding. The image study (CT and MRI) showed a polypoid mass that infiltrates the lateral wall of the sinus. The endoscopic biopsy showed an infiltrative basaloid tumour with areas of neural-type rosettes that was a diagnostic challenge even using a wide IHQ panel, given that there wasn’t squamous component. The pathological examination of the surgical resection showed a typical morphology of the BSCC and a strong p63 and p16 reactivity. The molecular study found several high grade HPV phenotypes. There is only a previous report (two cases) with neural-type rosettes and to the best of our knowledge, our case is the sole HPV related found, in this site.

Primary clear cell carcinoma of nasal cavity: report of a case

患者男,34岁.因反复间歇性右鼻出血1年余,流脓涕2个月于2009年8月入院.鼻腔CT显示右侧筛窦顶部嗅裂区见大小约1.8 cm ×0.8 cm条片状类似软组织密度影,边界清楚,邻近窦腔黏膜未见明显增厚,骨质完整(图1).胸腹CT及腹部B超未见异常.鼻腔检查见鼻腔黏膜光滑无充血,中下鼻甲无肿大,右鼻中道见脓涕,右侧嗅裂见新生物,色红,易出血,基底附着于筛顶部.鼻咽部未见异常.颈部淋巴结无肿大.行鼻内窥镜下右侧鼻腔新生物切除术并送病理检查。

Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Nasal Cavity

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is often founded in the head and neck region. However, BSCC in the sinonasal tract is rare. We report here on the case of a 58-yr-old woman who presented with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Computed tomography and examination of the nasal cavity revealed a tumor mass that originated from the right inferior turbinate with erosion of the nasal floor. The tumor that was attached to the inferior turbinate, the lateral nasal wall and the eroded right side hard palate, and so all this was resected. Histopathologic examination of the excised tumor confirmed BSCC in the nasal cavity. We report here on a nasal cavity BSCC that was treated with partial maxillectomy only.

Expression of epidermal growth factor receptor in the inverted papilloma and squamous cell carcinoma of nasal cavity

The present study was undertaken to compare positive rate of immunostaining (PR) and positive intensity of immunostaining (PI) of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in inverted papilloma (IP), synchronous carcinoma with IP and metachronous carcinoma with IP of the nasal cavity. Ten subjects with nasal polyps, ten subjects with inverted papilloma (IP), five subjects with synchronous carcinoma with IP and ten subjects with metachronous carcinoma with IP were enrolled with a control group of ten subjects of inferior turbinate. Each specimen was divided into two portions: one for RNA isolation and the other for detection of EGFR protein. Positive rate of immunostaining, positive intensity of immunostaining for EGFR protein and EGFR mRNA were significantly up-regulated in the IP, synchronous carcinoma with IP and metachronous carcinoma with IP when comparing polyp and normal mucosa. A role for EGFR in the malignant transformation from IP to SCC of the nasal cavity is suggested.
