For the past four years, during May, over 5,000 people have attended a three‐day program called “Senior Citizen Celebration Days: A Festival of Education and the Arts” sponsored by the Gerontology Program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Objectives of the festival are: (1) to provide an educational service for older people; (2) to establish ties between the university, older adults, agencies, and organizations serving older people; (3) to involve older people and the community in planning and conducting the festival; (4) to provide outreach to and encourage further involvement of older people in the university; and (5) through the various festival components, to provide a model for the development of other educational activities for older people. The major component of the program has been a series of minicourses. Other components have been health testing and information; demonstration and display of arts and crafts; service agency exhibits, aging conferences, speakers forum, and special events. The problems involved in planning and developing the program; the benefits to older people, the university, and the community; and an evaluation of the festival are discussed.
