Selective ion extraction from aqueous solutions is crucial for both water purification and resource recovery. This review presents an innovative approach to address the selective removal of fluoride and arsenic in brackish water. In this venture, we explore the elimination of fluoride and arsenic through the integration of tailored electrode materials and electrochemical methods in conjunction with CDI technology. We also describe the future potential of selective CDI, covering aspects such as performance evaluation, objectives, application range, and challenges. This information aims to guide future researchers in addressing knowledge gaps in the development and application of selective CDI systems. The findings of this study set the stage for further exploration and practical implementation of CDI as a robust water purification technique for brackish water sources.
