Effects of Interaction between Cadmium (Cd) and Selenium (Se) on Grain Yield and Cd and Se Accumulation in a Hybrid Rice (Oryza sativa) System.

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the interactive effects of cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se) on their accumulation in three rice cultivars, which remains unclear. The results showed that Se reduced Cd-induced growth inhibition, and increased and decreased Se and Cd concentrations in brown rice, respectively. Cadmium concentrations in all tissues of the hybrid were similar to those in its male parent yet significantly lower than those in its female parent. Selenium reduced Cd accumulation in rice when Cd concentration exceeded 2.0 mg kg-1; however Se accumulation depended on the levels of Cd exposure. Finally, Cd had minimal effect on Se translocation within the three cultivars. We concluded that Cd concentration in brown rice is a heritable trait, making crossbreeding a feasible method for cultivating high-yield, low-Cd rice cultivars. Selenium effectively decreased the toxicity and accumulation of Cd, and Cd affected Se uptake but not translocation.

Growth and Cd uptake by rice (Oryza sativa) in acidic and Cd-contaminated paddy soils amended with steel slag

Contamination of rice (Oryza sativa) by Cd is of great concern. Steel slag could be used to amend Cd-contaminated soils and make them safe for cereal production. This work was conducted to study the effects of steel slag on Cd uptake and growth of rice plants in acidic and Cd-contaminated paddy soils and to determine the possible mechanisms behind these effects. Pot (rhizobag) experiments were conducted using rice plants grown on two acidic and Cd-contaminated paddy soils with or without steel slag amendment. Steel slag amendment significantly increased grain yield by 36–45% and root catalase activity, and decreased Cd concentrations in brown rice by 66–77% compared with the control, in both soils. Steel slag amendment also markedly decreased extractable soil Cd, Cd concentrations in pore-water and Cd translocation from roots to above-ground parts. It also significantly increased soil pH, extractable Si and Ca in soils and Ca concentrations in roots. Significant positive correlations were found between extractable soil Cd and Cd concentrations in rice tissues, but it was negatively correlated with soil pH and extractable Si. Calcium in root tissues significantly and negatively correlated with Cd translocation factors from roots to straw. Overall, steel slag amendment not only significantly promoted rice growth but decreased Cd accumulation in brown rice. These benefits appear to be related to improvements in soil conditions (e.g. increasing pH, extractable Si and Ca), a reduction in extractable soil Cd, and suppression of Cd translocation from roots to above-ground parts.

Mitigation of Cd accumulation in paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) by Fe fertilization

Cadmium uptake in rice is believed to be mediated by the Fe transport system. Phyto-available Cd can be changed by Fe fertilization of substrates. This work investigated whether and how Fe fertilization affects mitigation of Cd accumulation in paddy rice. A 90-d soil column experiment was conducted to study the change of Cd and Fe availability in soil after Fe fertilization (ionic and chelated Fe). A low-Cd accumulating cultivar (TY116) and a high-Cd accumulating cultivar (JY841) were grown in two Cd-polluted paddy soils amended with chelated Fe fertilizers. Additionally, both cultivars were grown in hydroponics to compare Fe-related gene expression in EDDHAFe-deficient and EDDHAFe-sufficient roots.The column experiment showed that EDTANa2Fe(II) and EDDHAFe(III) fertilization had a better mitigation effect on soil Cd availability compared to FeSO4·7H2O. Moreover, the field experiment demonstrated that these two chelated fertilizations could reduce Cd concentrations in brown rice by up to 80%. Iron concentrations in the brown rice were elevated by Fe chelates. Compared to EDDHAFe(III), EDTANa2Fe(II) fertilization had a stronger mitigation effect by generating more EDTANa2Cd(II) in the soil solution to decrease phyto-available Cd in the soil. While EDDHAFe(III) fertilization could increase soil pH and decrease soil Eh which contributed to decreasing phyto-available Cd in a contaminated soil. In the hydroponic experiment, Fe sufficiency significantly reduced Cd concentrations in above-ground organs. In some cases, the expression of OsIRT1, OsNRAMP1 and OsNRAMP5 was inhibited under Fe sufficiency relative to Fe deficiency conditions. These results suggest that mitigation of rice Cd by Fe chelate fertilization results from a decrease in available Cd in substrates and the inhibition of the expression of several Fe-related genes in the IRT and NRAMP families.

Remedying Effects of a Combined Amendment for Paddy Soil Polluted with Cd for Spring and Autumn Rice

An in-situ paddy experiment was conducted to study the remedying effects of a combined amendment(calcium carbonate+diatomite+ferric sulfate) on Cd bioavailability in soil and Cd accumulation in rice for spring and autumn rice planted in a certain Cd contaminated paddy soil in Beishan Town, Changsha, Hunan Province. The results showed that:Application of the combined amendment significantly increased soil pH and CEC values in both cultivated seasons, but decreased soil OM contents for the spring rice. During the experiment, the contents of TCLP-extractable Cd and CaCl2-extractable Cd in soil were reduced by 18.0%-33.0% and 5.4%-57.9%, respectively. The Cd contents in brown rice, husk, leave and root for the spring rice decreased by 29.6%-56.1%, 52.1%-54.0%, 18.1%-80.7% and 24.4%-41.6%, respectively, due to application of the combined amendment. There were significant differences in Cd transport capacity between spring rice and autumn rice, and the transportation of soil Cd in autumn rice was smoother than that in spring rice. For the autumn rice, the effects of the combined amendment were not significant(P>0.05), except that the Cd content in husk increased a little after applying 2 g·kg-1 of the combined amendment. Significant positive correlations were found between the Cd contents in brown rice and the contents of TCLP-extractable Cd or CaCl2-extractable Cd in soil. Application of the combined amendment effectively inhibited Cd uptake by rice root and reduced Cd content in brown rice for the spring rice; however, these remedying effects were significantly weakened for the autumn rice due to loss of the combined amendment with the movement of irrigation water in the spring season. Therefore, we suggest that supplement of the combined amendment is necessary between two rice cultivated seasons.

Cadmium accumulation characteristics of low-cadmium rice (Oryza sativa L.) line and F1 hybrids grown in cadmium-contaminated soils.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution has threatened severely to food safety and human health. A pot experiment and a field experiment were conducted to investigate the difference of Cd accumulation between rice (Oryza sativa L.) lines and F1 hybrids in Cd-contaminated soils. The adverse effect on biomass of rice lines was greater than that of F1 hybrids under Cd treatments in the pot experiment. The variations of Cd concentration among rice cultivars in different organs were smaller in stem and leaf, but larger in root and ear. Average proportion of Cd in root of F1 hybrids was 1.39, 1.39, and 1.16 times higher than those of rice lines at the treatment of 1, 2, and 4mg Cdkg-1 soil, respectively. Cd concentrations in ear of F1 hybrids were significantly lower than rice lines with the reduction from 29.24 to 50.59%. Cd concentrations in brown rice of all F1 hybrids were less than 0.2mgkg-1 at 1mg Cdkg-1 soil, in which Lu98A/YaHui2816, 5406A/YaHui2816, and C268A/YaHui2816 could be screened out as cadmium-safe cultivars (CSCs) for being safe even at 2mg Cdkg-1 soil. C268A/YaHui2816 showed the lowest Cd concentration in root among F1 hybrids, while Lu98A/YaHui2816 and 5406A/YaHui2816 showed lower capability of Cd translocation from root to shoot under Cd exposure, which eventually caused the lower Cd accumulation in brown rice. The lower level of Cd translocation contributed to reducing the accumulation of Cd in brown rice had been validated by the field experiment. Thus, Lu98A/YaHui2816, 5406A/YaHui2816, and C268A/YaHui2816 could be considered as potential CSCs to cultivate in Cd-contaminated soils (<2mg Cdkg-1 soil).

Effects of Different Water Managements and Soil Eh on Migration and Accumulation of Cd in Rice

A pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of four modes of water managements on soil Eh values,bioavailability of soil Cd,migration and accumulation of Cd in rice.These four modes of water managements were moistening throughout the entire period of rice growth (M),moistening before filling stage and flooding after filling stage (M-F),flooding before filling stage and moistening after filling stage (F-M),and flooding throughout the entire period of rice growth (F).The results indicated that the exchangeable contents of Cd increased firstly and then declined with the soil Eh values changing from negative to positive.Compared with M,the other three modes (M-F,F-M,and F) significantly reduced the contents of Cd in all rice tissues,including roots,stems,husks and brown rice.Meanwhile,Cd contents in brown rice due to the treatments of M-F and F were 0.19 mg·kg-1 and 0.10 mg·kg-1,respectively.These Cd contents were lower than the limits of 0.2 mg·kg-1 in national food safety standard (GB 2762-2012).Compared with M,the other three modes significantly decreased Cd accumulation amounts in the aboveground parts of rice and also decreased Cd translocation factors in rice.There were significant positive exponential relations between soil Eh values and Cd accumulation amounts in the aboveground parts of rice,Cd translocation factors in rice,or Cd contents in brown rice.The rice biomass due to M-F treatment reached the maximum among the four modes.It was worthy to be mentioned that although Weiyou 46 was considered a variety rice with high Cd accumulation,Cd content in rice brown of Weiyou 46 could be lower than 0.2 mg·kg-1 in the 5 mg·kg-1 of Cd contaminated soil through proper water managements.In summary,M-F treatment ensured high rice yield with low Cd contents in brown rice and could be recommended as the irrigation mode in rice production.Simultaneously,maintaining soil Eh value between -160--130 mV was also important after the filling stage.

A three-season field study on the in-situ remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy soil using lime, two industrial by-products, and a low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivar

To mitigate the serious problem of Cd-contaminated paddy soil, we investigated the remediation potential of combining in-situ immobilization with a low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivar. A three-season field experiment compared the soil pH, available Cd and absorption of Cd by three rice cultivars with different Cd accumulation abilities grown in Cd-contaminated paddy soil amended with lime (L), slag (S), and bagasse (B) alone or in combination. The three amendments applied alone and in combination significantly increased soil pH, reduced available Cd and absorption of Cd by rice with no effect on grain yield. Among these, the LS and LSB treatments reduced the brown rice Cd content by 38.3–69.1% and 58.3–70.9%, respectively, during the three seasons. Combined with planting of a low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivar (Xiang Zaoxian 32) resulted in a Cd content in brown rice that met the contaminant limit (≤0.2mgkg−1). However, the grain yield of the low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivar was approximately 30% lower than the other two rice cultivars. Applying LS or LSB as amendments combined with planting a low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivar is recommended for the remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy soil. The selection and breeding of low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivars with high grain production requires further research.

Effects of alkaline and bioorganic amendments on cadmium, lead, zinc, and nutrient accumulation in brown rice and grain yield in acidic paddy fields contaminated with a mixture of heavy metals.

Paddy soils and rice (Oryza sativa L.) contaminated by mixed heavy metals have given rise to great concern. Field experiments were conducted over two cultivation seasons to study the effects of steel slag (SS), fly ash (FA), limestone (LS), bioorganic fertilizer (BF), and the combination of SS and BF (SSBF) on rice grain yield, Cd, Pb, and Zn and nutrient accumulation in brown rice, bioavailability of Cd, Pb, and Zn in soil as well as soil properties (pH and catalase), at two acidic paddy fields contaminated with mixed heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Zn). Compared to the controls, SS, LS, and SSBF at both low and high additions significantly elevated soil pH over both cultivation seasons. The high treatments of SS and SSBF markedly increased grain yields, the accumulation of P and Ca in brown rice and soil catalase activities in the first cultivation season. The most striking result was from SS application (4.0tha-1) that consistently and significantly reduced the soil bioavailability of Cd, Pb, and Zn by 38.5-91.2% and the concentrations of Cd and Pb in brown rice by 20.9-50.9% in the two soils over both cultivation seasons. LS addition (4.0tha-1) also markedly reduced the bioavailable Cd, Pb, and Zn in soil and the Cd concentrations in brown rice. BF remobilized soil Cd and Pb leading to more accumulation of these metals in brown rice. The results showed that steel slag was most effective in the remediation of acidic paddy soils contaminated with mixed heavy metals.

Provoking Effects of Exogenous Zn on Cadmium Accumulation in Rice

Pot experiments were carried out to study the influences of different concentrations of exogenous Zn on accumulation of Cd in various rice organs of low Cd accumulation cultivar Xiang-Wanxian 12 (XWX12) and high Cd accumulation cultivar Wei-You 46 (WY 46) exposed to soil with medium and serious Cd pollution. The results showed that:In the soil with medium Cd pollution, Cd contents in various rice organs of two rice varieties were increased by exogenous Zn, and the Cd contents in brown rice of XWX12 and WY46 were increased by 125.0% -275.0% and 6.6% -91.2%, respectively, but still lower than 0.2 mg·kg-1. In the soil with serious Cd pollution, Cd accumulation in various rice organs were reduced by exogenous Zn. Cd contents in brown rice of XWX12 and WY46 were reduced by 16.6%-63.5%, and 15.6%-74.4%, respectively, and Cd contents in brown rice of WY 46 were gradually decreased with increasing exogenous Zn application, resulting in lower than 0.2 mg·kg-1 of Cd in brown rice. The correlations of Cd contents in brown rice and exchangeable contents of Cd and Zn in soil were different depending on the Cd pollution levels and the rice varieties. In the soil with medium Cd pollution, Cd content in brown rice of XWX12 was linearly positively related to exchangeable Zn content in soil, and Cd content in brown rice of WY46 was linearly positively related to exchangeable Cd or Zn contents in soil. In the soil with serious pollution, however, the correlation of Cd contents in brown rice of WY46 and the contents of exchangeable Cd or Zn in soil was linear negative correlation. Therefore, for improvement of the rice quality, under the condition that total Zn content in soil was lower than the pollution level, applying a certain amount of Zn to reduce Cd contents in brown rice was feasible in the soil with serious pollution.

In Situ Field-Scale Remediation of Low Cd-Contaminated Paddy Soil Using Soil Amendments

At present, the remediation of heavy-metal-polluted cropland soil is a considerable problem. In this study, in situ immobilization field experiment was conducted by planting rice (Oryza sativa L.) in low Cd-contaminated paddy soil to determine the optimal soil amendment that would reduce the accumulation of Cd in brown rice. GL (main component is alkaline residue), FG (main components are Si and Ca), and SH (main component is lime) were utilized as amendments. The remediation effects of the amendments on the soil and rice were investigated, and the potential mechanisms of reducing Cd availability to rice were analyzed. Amendment application significantly increased the soil pH value, reduced the DTPA-extractable Cd concentrations, and shifted Cd species from the exchangeable Cd fractions to the carbonate-bound, Fe-Mn oxides and residual fractions in paddy soil. For the plant, amendment application apparently increased the concentrations of Ca in rice plants, which could compete with Cd in root uptake. Besides, amendment application also effectively restricted the translocation of Cd from roots to shoots and consequently led to a notable decrease of Cd concentration in brown rice. These results demonstrated that the FG ameliorant could be effective in reducing Cd bioavailability and accumulation in rice grown on low Cd-contaminated paddy soils.

A three-year in-situ study on the persistence of a combined amendment (limestone+sepiolite) for remedying paddy soil polluted with heavy metals

In order to study the persistence of a combined amendment (LS, limestone+sepiolite) for remedying paddy soil polluted with the heavy metals Pb and Cd, a three-year in-situ experiment was conducted in a paddy soil near a mining area in southern Hunan, China. LS was applied at rates of 0, 2, 4, and 8g/kg (w/w); rice was subsequently planted for the three consecutive years of 2012 (first season), 2013 (second season), and 2014 (third season). Experimental results indicated that LS significantly increased soil pH values for all three seasons, and the enhancement ranked as follows: first season>second season>third season. Under the experimental conditions, the effect of LS on decreasing exchangeable concentrations of soil Pb and Cd was as follows: first season (97.6–99.8% for Pb and 88.3–98.9% for Cd)>second season (80.7–97.7% for Pb and 28.3–88.0% for Cd)>third season (32.6–97.7% for Pb and 8.3–71.4% for Cd); the effect of LS on reducing Pb concentrations in brown rice was: first season (73.5–81.2%)>third season (29.6–68.1%)>second season (0–9.7%), and that for reducing Cd concentrations in brown rice was third season (72.7–81.0%)>first season (56.1–66.8%)>second season (20.9–32.3%). For all three seasons, the effect of LS on reducing Cd content in brown rice was better than that for Pb. The highest translocation factors for Pb and Cd were from rice straw to husk, implying that the husk of rice plants was the main organ in which heavy metals accumulated. The effect of LS for decreasing soil exchangeable Cd content was relatively persistent, but that for Pb gradually decreased with time, implying that LS was more suitable for the long-term remediation of Cd-polluted soil than Pb-polluted soil.

Effects of tire rubber ash and zinc sulfate on crop productivity and cadmium accumulation in five rice cultivars under field conditions.

Cadmium (Cd) is among the most widespread and toxic heavy metals becoming a severe threat to humans. A field study was conducted to examine the role of various zinc (Zn) fertilization treatments and cultivars on crop productivity and Zn and Cd concentrations in brown rice and rice straw. The Zn fertilization treatments included an unfertilized control, foliar applied Zn sulfate (ZnSO4) at panicle initiation stage, foliar applied ZnSO4 at milky stage, soil application of rubber ash, and soil-applied ZnSO4, while five rice cultivars were Swat-1, Shadab, Shua-92, Swat-2, and Sada Hayat. All the Zn fertilization treatments resulted in significantly higher number of panicles, number of spikelets per panicles, spikelet fertility, 1,000-grain weight, grain yield, brown rice and rice straw Zn concentrations, and significantly lower Cd concentrations. Soil application of rubber ash remained the best among all Zn fertilization treatments as it resulted in 73% higher grain yield and reduced Cd concentration by 51% as compared with control. Variations were also apparent among cultivars, and Shua-92 and Swat-2 performed better in terms of all studied attributes as compared with other cultivars. Conclusively, cultivar selection and Zn application are effective strategies to improve rice grain yield as well as quality. Rubber ash appeared a viable source of Zn having the ability to increase yield along with reducing Cd accumulation.

Prediction of Cadmium content in brown rice using near‐infrared spectroscopy and regression modelling techniques

SummaryThe feasibility of prediction of cadmium (Cd) content in brown rice was investigated by near‐infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and chemometrics techniques. Spectral pretreatment methods were discussed in detail. Synergy interval partial least squares (siPLS) algorithm was used to select the efficient combinations of spectral subintervals and wavenumbers during constructing the quantitative calibration model. The performance of the final model was evaluated by the use of root mean square error of cross‐validation (RMSECV), root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) and correlation coefficients for calibration set and prediction set (Rc and Rp), respectively. The results showed that the optimum siPLS model was achieved when two spectral subinterval and fifty‐two variables were selected. The predicted result of the best model obtained was as follows: RMSECV = 0.232, Rc = 0.930, RMSEP = 0.250 and Rp = 0.915. Compared with PLS and interval PLS models, siPLS model was slightly better than those methods. These results indicate that it is feasible to predict and screen Cd content in brown rice using NIRS.

In situ field-scale remediation of Cd polluted paddy soil using sepiolite and palygorskite

At present, the remediation of heavy-metal polluted soil is a considerable problem. In this study, in situ immobilization field experiments were conducted by planting rice (Oryza sativa L.) in Cd contaminated paddy soil to determine the optimal remediation mode that would reduce the accumulation of Cd in brown grain. Sepiolite and palygorskite were utilized as amendments, while ordinary and low Cd-accumulating rice cultivars were selected as model plants. The remediation effects of the amendments on the soil and rice were investigated and the potential immobilization mechanisms were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The application of sepiolite and palygorskite was found to increase the pH value of the paddy soil, by varying amounts, and significantly reduce the HCl, TCLP, CaCl2, and NH4OAc-extractable Cd concentrations resulting in a notable decrease in the Cd concentration in brown rice. Both sepiolite and palygorskite were found to reduce exchangeable Cd concentrations and increase the carbonate-bound and residual fractions in paddy soil. Precipitation of Cd as carbonates or hydroxides and surface complexation were the main immobilization mechanisms for sepiolite and palygorskite. The concentration of Cd in brown rice of the low Cd-accumulating cultivar from the control plot was 0.72mg·kg−1. Sepiolite treatment reduced the value to 0.18mg·kg−1 below the maximum levels reported by Codex Stan 193-1995 and the national standard of China. It was concluded that chemical immobilization combined with crop cultivar selection could be a suitable proposal for crop safety regulation and sustainable agriculture.

Water management affects arsenic and cadmium accumulation in different rice cultivars

Paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food and one of the major sources of dietary arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in Asia. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of four water management regimes (aerobic, intermittent irrigation, conventional irrigation and flooding) on As and Cd accumulation in seven major rice cultivars grown in Zhejiang province, east China. With increasing irrigation from aerobic to flooded conditions, the soil HCl-extractable As concentrations increased significantly and the HCl-extractable Cd concentrations decreased significantly. These trends were consistent with the As and Cd concentrations in the straw, husk and brown rice. Water management both before and after the full tillering stage affected As and Cd accumulation in the grains. The intermittent and conventional treatments produced higher grain yields than the aerobic and flooded treatments. Cd concentrations in brown rice varied 13.1-40.8 times and As varied 1.75-8.80 times among the four water management regimes. Cd and As accumulation in brown rice varied among the rice cultivars, with Guodao 6 (GD6) was a low Cd but high-As-accumulating cultivar while Indonesia (IR) and Yongyou 9 (YY9) were low As but high-Cd-accumulating cultivars. Brown rice Cd and As concentrations in the 7 cultivars were significantly negatively correlated. The results indicate that As and Cd accumulated in rice grains with opposite trends that were influenced by both water management and rice cultivar. Production of 'safe' rice with respect to As and Cd might be possible by balancing water management and rice cultivar according to the severity of soil pollution.

Selection of Cd-Excluder Rice in Shenyang Region of China for Food Safety

It is one of very important technologies of phytoremediation using low accumulative plant especially excluder crop to safely product food in contaminated soil. In order to identify some excluder crop cultivars, a pot experiment was conducted to compare Cd accumulation differences among of 26 normal and 4 hybrid rice cultivars (Japonica) in Shenyang region of China for food safety aim. The results showed that only Cd concentration in brown rice of Shendao 4 among of 30 rice cultivars was lower than 0.2 mg kg-1 (agricultural trade standard of non-pollution food for rice of China, NY 5115-2008) at a lower level of Cd exposure spiked at 2.5 mg kg-1. When soil Cd spiked at 5 mg kg-1, Cd concentration in brown rice of Shendao 4 was lower either compared to other cultivars, and its enrichment factors (EFs) and translocation factors (TFs) were lower than 1.0 and 0.5, respectively. Furthermore, the yields of grains and the biomasses of aboveground of Shendao 4 didn’t decrease significantly compared to the control (p&lt;0.05), indicating it was a Cd-excluder cultivar. This is a new and important found in Northeast China rice production and may have an important interest in exploring crop exclusion mechanism.

Immunochromatography for the rapid determination of cadmium concentrations in wheat grain and eggplant

A simple and quick on-site test for trace levels of cadmium (Cd) in food is needed because of the human toxicity of this heavy metal. We developed an immunochromatography kit which uses the antigen-antibody complex reaction between the Cd-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Cd-EDTA) complex and an anti-Cd-EDTA antibody. We previously reported the successful use of this kit to determine Cd concentrations in brown rice with respect to the international standard: 0.4 mg kg⁻¹. Here, we measured, using this immunochromatography kit, Cd concentrations in crops with lower international standards than rice. Cadmium extracted with 0.1 mol L⁻¹ HCl from wheat grain and fresh eggplant was purified sufficiently using an ion-exchange column treatment. Appropriate HCl extraction rates and dilution rates for the column eluate were selected; Cd concentrations in wheat grain and fresh eggplant were determined successfully by immunochromatography with respect to the international standards of 0.2 mg kg⁻¹ and 0.05 mg kg⁻¹ fresh weight, respectively. Approximate Cd concentrations in wheat grain and fresh eggplant can be monitored easily and quickly by this method at locations where facilities for acid digestion and precision analysis are not available.

Simplified method for determining cadmium concentrations in rice foliage and soil by using a biosensor kit with immunochromatography

AbstractBACKGROUND: The behavior of cadmium in ecosystems needs to be monitored because of the human toxicity of this heavy metal. The need recently arose for a simple and quick on‐site test for trace levels of Cd in food and environmental samples. In response, an immunochromatographic assay kit for detecting Cd was manufactured by Kansai Electric Power Co. of Japan. This kit uses the antigen–antibody complex reaction between the Cd–EDTA complex and an anti‐Cd–EDTA antibody and shows the results in terms of the degree of color developed on a test paper. We previously reported the successful use of this kit to determine Cd concentrations in brown rice. Here, we applied the kit to the determination of Cd concentrations in rice foliage and soil.RESULTS: Cadmium in rice foliage was not extracted successfully by the method used for brown rice. However, it was successfully extracted by 0.1 mol L−1 HCl solution at a rice foliage:HCl ratio of 1:20, and coexisting metals were removed sufficiently by the column treatment. The Cd concentrations determined by immunochromatographic assay were well correlated with the values obtained by acid decomposition and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The 0.1 mol L−1 HCl‐extractable Cd concentration in soil was also determined successfully with the kit.CONCLUSION: Approximate Cd concentrations in rice plants and 0.1 mol L−1 HCl‐extractable Cd concentrations in soil can be monitored easily and quickly by this method at locations where facilities for acid digestion and precision analysis are not available. Suppressive effects of magnesium oxide materials on cadmium uptake and accumulation into rice grains: II: Suppression of cadmium uptake and accumulation into rice grains due to application of magnesium oxide materials

The objective of this study is to assess the applicability of a commercial magnesium oxide (MgO) and a composite material containing MgO and natural minerals (‘MgO-SH-A’) as the soil amendments for suppression of cadmium (Cd) uptake and accumulation into rice grains. A cultivation experiment of rice plants ( Oryza sativa L. cv. Kinuhikari) was conducted in an actual Cd-contaminated alluvial paddy field to evaluate the effectiveness of these materials. The ‘plant available’ fractions of Cd in the paddy soil significantly decreased by application of commercial MgO at 2250 kg ha −1 or MgO-SH-A at 4500 kg ha −1. These decreases would be primarily attributed to the increase in soil pH due to applications of the MgO materials because these soil Cd fractions were significantly negatively correlated with the soil pH. Even under a suppressive condition for Cd uptake by rice plants, i.e., continuous flooding of the paddy field around the heading stage, applications of these materials further reduced Cd concentration in brown rice as compared to that from the control. It was concluded that the two MgO materials examined would be effective in preventing Cd contamination of rice grains grown in Cd-polluted paddy fields.
