The dissolved organic matter from the co-decomposition of Chinese milk vetch and rice straw induces the strengthening of Cd remediation by Fe-modified biochar

Fe-modified biochar (FB) and co-using Chinese milk vetch and rice straw (MR) are two effective ways for mitigating the cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy fields in southern China. Nevertheless, the effects of FB combined with MR on Cd passivation mechanism remain unclear. In the current study, the strengthening effects of FB induced by MR were found and the mechanisms of the extracted dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the co-decomposition of MR on Cd alleviation were investigated through pot experiment and adsorption experiment. Pot experiment demonstrated that co-incorporating FB and MR decreased available Cd by 23.1% and increased iron plaque concentration by 11.8%, resulting in a 34.7% reduction in Cd concentrations in brown rice compared with addition of FB. Furthermore, co-using FB and MR improved available nutrients in the soil. The molecular characteristics of DOM derived from the decomposition of MR (DOM-MR) were analyzed by fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectroscopy-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) and Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Results showed that lignin/carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules and protein/amino sugar were the main compounds, potentially involved in the Cd binding. Adsorption experiments revealed that the addition of DOM-MR improved the functional groups, specific surface area, and negative charges of FB, inducing the strengthening of both physisorption and chemisorption of Cd(II). The maximum adsorption capacity of Fe-modified biochar after adding DOM-MR was 634 mg g−1, 1.30 times that without the addition of DOM-MR. This study suggested that co-incorporating MR, and FB could serve as an innovative practice for simultaneous Cd remediation and soil fertilization in Cd-polluted paddy fields. It also provided valuable insights and basis that DOM-MR could optimize the performances of Fe-modified biochar and enhance its potential for Cd immobilization.Graphical

Effect of Silica Fertilizer(Husk Ash) to Improve Soil Quality and Reduce Cd and As Accumulation in Rice

A rice pot experiment was conducted to identify the effect of silica fertilizer prepared from husk ash on the soil bioavailability of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As), enzyme activities, microbial community structure, and heavy metal content in brown rice at different growth stages. The results showed that the application of 0.1%-1.0% silica fertilizer-husk ash increased the pH value of soil by 0.04-0.24 units and the content of soil available silicon by 44.2%-97.5%. It also decreased the content of available Cd and available As by 16.2%-21.4% and 16.0%-24.9%, respectively. With the increase in application amount, the soil enzyme activities increased at all growth stages, and the sucrase activity and the dehydrogenase activity significantly increased by 6.3%-145.7% and 6.7%-224.1%, respectively. The analysis of the soil microbial community composition structure at mature stages showed that the application of silica fertilizer-husk ash had no effect on microbial α-diversity, but it had a significant effect on microbial β-diversity and then promoted microbial growth and maintained the stability of the community structure. With the increase in application amount, the contents of Cd in brown rice decreased by 29.3%-89.7%, and the contents of total As and inorganic As in brown rice decreased by 7.8%-42.3% and 17.2%-44.5%, respectively. Under the application of 0.5% and 1.0% silica fertilizer-husk ash, the Cd contents in brown rice were lower than 0.2 mg·kg-1, and the inorganic As contents in brown rice were lower than 0.35 mg·kg-1. In conclusion, the silica fertilizer-husk ash can improve soil quality and reduce the contents of Cd and As in brown rice, and it is eco-friendly and can be used to remedy the paddy soil contaminated with Cd and As.

Response of Cadmium in Soil-rice to Different Conditioners Based on Field Trials

A plot experiment was carried out to assess the applicability of soil conditioners on Cd-polluted acidic paddy fields. The effects of five soil conditioners[Tianxiang 1 Hao (TX1), limestone (Li), silicon fertilizer, Nuodikang (NDK), and calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer (CaMg-P)] on Cd accumulation and transport between contaminated soil and rice plants and rice yield on the land were analyzed. The results showed that compared with that under the control, other tested methods increased soil pH by 0.41-0.68 units and decreased available Cd content in the soil by 11.2%-39.7%. The difference between Li- and NDK-treated soil available Cd reached a significant level (P < 0.05). ② Compared with that in the blank control, the application of soil conditioner could significantly reduce the total amount of Cd in rice, and the Cd content in roots, other leaves, rachises, chaffs, and brown rice were significantly lower than those in the CK treatment (P < 0.05). The Cd translation factor between various sites was shown as TFroots-other nodes > TFroots-first nodes > TFroots-rachises > TFroots-chaffs ≈ TFroots-flag leaves > TFroots-brown rice. The Cd content of brown rice met the national safety standard (0.2 mg·kg-1), in which the TX1, Li, and CaMg-P treatments showed significant Cd reduction effects, and ω(Cd) was 0.097, 0.094, and 0.134 mg·kg-1, respectively. ③ The application of soil conditioner could increase the yield by 9.9%-35.8%, and the yield of the CaMg-P and TX1 treatments was significantly higher than that of other treatments (P < 0.05). ④ Correlation analysis showed that the Cd content in brown rice was significantly positively correlated with available Cd content in soil, available Fe content in soil, and available phosphorus but negatively correlated with soil pH. In summary, TX1 and CaMg-P are recommended to be applied in farmland lightly polluted by the heavy metal Cd to ensure the safety of agricultural products.

Applying Nitrogen Fertilizer at the Full Heading Stage Has the Potential to Decrease Brown Rice Cd Accumulation

Soil contamination by cadmium (Cd) has presented a major challenge in China. The objective of the field experiments in this study was to examine the influence of nitrogen fertilizer application at the full heading and milky stages on minimizing the absorption of Cd in rice. This was achieved by affecting the distribution of Cd in root plaques and subcellular compartments of the root and flag leaf. The hydroponic culture experiments aimed to examine the effect of nitrogen and Cd interaction or deficiency on Cd accumulation in rice during the late growth stage. The findings revealed that adequate nitrogen supply during the early growth stage, coupled with nitrogen application during the full heading and milky stages, led to a notable increase in Fe concentration in the root plaques during the milk and mature stages. Furthermore, it elevated the Cd proportion in the soluble fraction of the flag leaves at the milky stage. Conversely, nitrogen deficiency during the early growth stage resulted in a significant increase in Fe concentration in the root plaques, along with a decrease in Cd concentration. Additionally, the proportion of Cd in the flag leaf cell walls increased significantly, while the proportion in the soluble fraction decreased notably. Irrespective of nitrogen supply during the early growth stage, applying nitrogen at the full heading stage significantly reduced Cd transport from shoots to brown rice, leading to a considerable reduction in the Cd concentration in brown rice. Under hydroponic culture conditions, combined Cd exposure with nitrogen supply significantly increased the Cd concentration in brown rice. Nitrogen supply had no impact on the Cd concentration in brown rice in the absence of Cd. The study showed that applying nitrogen fertilizer at the full heading stage effectively decreased the brown rice Cd concentration. This was achieved by elevating the concentration of Fe in the root plaque, thereby influencing the adsorption of Cd by the roots. Additionally, nitrogen application at the full heading stage can influence the distribution of Cd in flag leaf cells during the filling stage. Ensuring ample nitrogen supply in the early stage of rice growth is crucial, and nitrogen application at the full heading stage can effectively reduce the Cd concentration in brown rice.

Cadmium accumulation in brown rice (Oryza sativa L.) depends on environmental factors and nutrient transport: A three-year field study

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in brown rice is a complex process in agroecosystems and is influenced by multiple factors, such as climate, soil properties, and nutrient transport. However, during the Cd transport process (soil-root-straw-brown rice), it remains unclear how Cd concentration in brown rice (BCd) is causal relationship to environmental factors and nutrient transport. The differences in precipitation, soil properties, nutrient transport, and Cd transport were studied through a three-year fixed-point field trial and linked them to the standard of Cd and nutrient absorption and transport processes. The results showed that the available Cd concentration (ACd), and BCd in 2020 were lower than those in 2019 and 2021, but monthly precipitation (MP) was higher in 2020 than in 2019 and 2021. The MP and niche metrics were significantly negatively associated with ACd and BCd. However, the relationship between the form and location of different nutrient elements and Cd in roots, Cd in straws, and BCd also varied during the transport of nutrient elements and Cd from soil to root to straw to brown rice. Structural equation modelling analysis showed that nitrogen (N 15.5 %), phosphorus (P 14.1 %), silicon (Si 4.2 %), and iron (Fe 7.6 %) transport were more closely related to BCd than to potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn). The increase in MP significantly inhibited the increase in BCd, whereas the MP led to a decrease in BCd by affecting the transport of N and Fe. Among them, Si, Fe, and BCd had indirect causal relationships, whereas N, P, and BCd had direct causal relationships. Particularly, P is a crucial nutrient in reducing BCd in the Cd transport process. Our results highlight a strong causal relationship between environmental factors and nutrient transport and BCd, and provide a theoretical basis for fertiliser application in Cd-contaminated agroecosystems.

Role of iron manganese plaque in the safe production of rice (Oryza sativa L.) grains: Field evidence at plot and regional scales in cadmium-contaminated paddy soils

The relationship between iron manganese plaque (IP) and cadmium (Cd) accumulation by rice in the microenvironment of rice rhizosphere at varying field scales needs to be further explored. In this study, we selected different rice varieties and implemented tailored amendments to ensure the safe production of rice grains in heavily Cd-contaminated farmland situated around an E-waste dismantling site. Through regional surveys, we elucidated the role of IP in facilitating safe rice production. The selection of low-Cd accumulating rice varieties and application of appropriate amendments with sufficient dosages allowed for the effective reduction of Cd transport from soil to rice, resulting in a safe concentration of Cd in rice grains. Analysis using a random forest algorithm indicated that iron (Fe) played a more pivotal role than manganese in soil–rice systems in mitigating Cd accumulation in brown rice. The presence of Fe in IP (IP-Fe) at a low loading mass was unfavorable to the Cd-safe production of rice, while at an IP-Fe loading mass of 52 g/kg, the Cd content in brown rice decreased to a safe level. Furthermore, precipitation, coprecipitation, and complexation of surface functional groups contributed to Cd fixation on IP, as indicated by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron probe microanalysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection. Our results highlighted the key role of IP in the production of Cd-safe rice at different field scales.

Different composites inhibit Cd accumulation in grains under the rice-oilseed rape rotation mode of karst area: A field study

Ensuring the safe production of food and oil crops in soils with elevated cadmium (Cd) content in karst regions is crucial. We tested a field experiment to examine the long-term remediation effects of compound microorganisms (CM), strong anion exchange adsorbent (SAX), processed oyster shell (POS), and composite humic acids (CHA) on Cd contamination in paddy fields under a rice-oilseed rape rotation system. In comparison to the control group (CK), the application of amendments significantly increased soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and soil organic matter (SOM) content while markedly decreasing the content of available Cd (ACd). During the rice cultivation season, Cd was predominantly concentrated in the roots. Relative to the control (CK), the Cd content in each organ was significantly reduced. The Cd content in brown rice decreased by 19.18–85.45%. The Cd content in brown rice following different treatments exhibited the order of CM > POS > CHA > SAX, which was lower than the Chinese Food Safety Standard (GB 2762–2017) (0.20 mg/kg). Intriguingly, during the oilseed rape cultivation season, we discovered that oilseed rape possesses potential phytoremediation capabilities, with Cd mainly accumulating in roots and stems. Notably, CHA treatment alone significantly decreased the Cd content in oilseed rape grains to 0.156 mg/kg. CHA treatment also maintained soil pH and SOM content, consistently reduced soil ACd content, and stabilized Cd content in RSF within the rice-oilseed rape rotation system. Importantly, CHA treatment not only enhances crop production but also has a low total cost (1255.230 US$/hm2). Our research demonstrated that CHA provides a consistent and stable remediation effect on Cd-contaminated rice fields within the crop rotation system, as evidenced by the analysis of Cd reduction efficiency, crop yield, soil environmental change, and total cost. These findings offer valuable guidance for sustainable soil utilization and safe production of grain and oil crops in the context of high Cd concentrations in karst mountainous regions.

A rice–chicory rotation pattern ensures safe grain production and phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated paddy fields: A four-year field experiment in southern China

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy systems is a serious problem, and a strategy must be devised that ensures safe grain production and rapid remediation of soil Cd contamination. To investigate the remediation potential of crop rotation and its effect on Cd accumulation in rice, a four-year (seven-season) rice–chicory rotation field trial was conducted on a moderately acidic Cd-contaminated paddy soil. Rice was planted in summers, followed by straw removal, and chicory, a Cd-enrichment plant, was planted during winter fallows. Rotation effects were compared with those with rice only (control). Rice yields between the rotation and control were not significantly different, whereas Cd concentrations in rice tissues decreased in the rotation. Cd concentration in brown rice of the low-Cd variety decreased to less than 0.2 mg/kg (national food safety standard) from the third season onward, whereas in the high-Cd variety, it decreased from 0.43 mg/kg in the first season to 0.24 mg/kg in the fourth season. The highest Cd concentration in chicory aboveground parts was 24.47 mg/kg, with an enrichment factor of 27.81. Chicory had high regenerative capacity and was repeatedly harvested for biomass in multiple mowings, with average aboveground biomass over 2000 kg/ha in a single mowing. Theoretical phytoextraction efficiency (TPE) of one rice season with straw removal was 0.84%–2.44%, whereas the highest TPE of one chicory season reached 8.07%. The seven seasons of rice–chicory rotation extracted up to 407 g/ha Cd from soil with a TPE exceeding 20%. Therefore, rice–chicory rotation and straw removal can effectively reduce Cd accumulation in subsequent rice crops, without interrupting production and simultaneously rapidly remediating Cd-contaminated soil. Thus, the production potential of light to moderately Cd-contaminated paddy fields can be realized with crop rotation.

Effects of sulfur supply on cadmium transfer and concentration in rice at different growth stages exposed to sulfur-deficient but highly cadmium-contaminated soil

BackgroundSulfur (S) has been widely used to alleviate cadmium (Cd) toxicity and control Cd accumulation in rice under waterlogging conditions. However, the results are contradictory, and the reasons remain unclear. This could be because most studies rarely simultaneously monitor the processes of S-induced soil Cd bioavailability and Cd accumulation in rice throughout its growth period. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of two sulfur levels (0, and 30 mg S kg−1) on Cd concentration and translocation in rice at three growth stages (booting, filling and maturity) under waterlogging conditions. Paddy soil deficient in S but contaminated with Cd (10.16 mg Cd kg−1) was used for the pot experiment.ResultsS application increased concentrations of Cd in grain at the filling stage partially because S induced the promotion of Cd transfer from roots to stems, leaves, and grains, and S induced the accumulation and fixation of Cd in iron plaques at the filling stage. However, the application of S significantly reduced Cd concentrations in brown rice at the maturity stage, which could be attributed to three aspects, as described below. First, S supply reduced the availability of Cd in soil and iron plaque on the root surface by reducing dissolved Cd in soil pore water and transferring Cd from iron plaque on the root surface to roots. Second, S supply inhibited the transfer of Cd in other tissues to brown rice based on Cd transfer factors from roots, stems, leaves, and husks to brown rice, which were obviously lower with S supply than without S supply at the maturity stage. Third, S induced the dilution of Cd in brown rice because the application of S significantly increased brown rice biomass by 215%.ConclusionsA S-induced decline in Cd accumulation in brown rice was related to S-regulated Cd transfer among rice plants, S-induced promotion of rice growth and a decrease in Cd bioavailability in S-deficient but Cd-contaminated paddy soil under waterlogging conditions. This study provides valuable information for growing rice in low-S and Cd-contaminated paddy soil and reducing the risk of Cd in rice to humans.Graphical abstract

Effect of Leaf Surface Regulation of Zinc Fertilizer on Absorption of Cadmium, Plumbum and Zinc in Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

The accumulation of heavy metals in rice is bound to affect human health and safety. In order to ensure food security, this study explores the effect of leaf surface regulation of zinc (Zn) fertilizer on the safety of rice in cadmium (Cd)-plumbum (Pb) polluted farmland. Through field experiments, the leaf surface control treatment of zinc fertilizer was set up, and the effects of leaf surface control of zinc fertilizer on rice yield, Cd and Pb concentration in different parts and zinc, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentration in brown rice were studied in the growing period of rice. The results showed as follows: (1) Spraying twice or more in the growth stage of rice could increase the yield by 6.77–7.29% compared with the blank, which was significantly higher than that of single spraying in a certain growth stage. (2) After spraying zinc fertilizer on the leaf surface, Cd and Pb concentration in brown rice decreased by 29.52–56.01% and 11.10–28.34%, respectively, compared with CK. Two or more times of spraying can make Cd concentration in brown rice meet the Chinese standard GB 2762-2022, and one time of spraying can make Pb concentration in brown rice meet the standard. (3) Leaf surface control of zinc fertilizer could reduce the Cd enrichment ability of rice plant parts, and the Cd enrichment coefficient of brown rice was significantly reduced by 28.18–55.02%. Leaf surface control of zinc fertilizer can reduce Cd and Pb concentration in brown rice by reducing the transport ability of heavy metal Cd and Pb in rice roots to straw and then to brown rice. (4) The zinc concentration in brown rice was 18.16–20.68 mg·kg−1, which was 18.21–34.64% higher than that in CK, and the zinc enrichment effect was the most significant after spraying three times. Meanwhile, the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentration in brown rice also increased with the increase of spraying times. By comprehensive analysis, the leaf surface control of zinc fertilizer can reduce the Cd and Pb concentration in rice, and the Cd and Pb concentration in brown rice can meet the Chinese standard GB 2762-2022 by spraying twice. At the same time, it can improve the concentration of zinc, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in brown rice, is feasible and has high economic benefits.

Co-application of combined amendment (limestone and sepiolite) and Si fertilizer reduces rice Cd uptake and transport through Cd immobilization and Si–Cd antagonism

Limestone and sepiolite combined amendment (LS) and silicon (Si) fertilizers are commonly applied for the remediation of Cd-polluted paddy soil. However, it is difficult to further decrease cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice grains by the individual application of LS or Si fertilizer to heavily Cd-polluted paddy fields. Two seasons of continuous field experiments were conducted in heavily Cd-polluted soil to study how the co-application of LS and Si fertilizer (namely soil-applied Si and foliar-sprayed Si) influences Cd and Si bioavailability in soil and Cd uptake and transport in rice. The results indicated that LS co-applied with soil-applied Si fertilizer treatments can enhance pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and available Si content in soil by 0.56–1.26 units, 19.3%–57.2%, and 14.7%–58.9% (p < 0.05), respectively, and reduce the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) extractable Cd content in soil by 26.5%–49.8% (p < 0.05) relative to the control. Furthermore, the co-application of LS and soil and foliar-sprayed Si fertilizer treatments reduced the Cd content in brown rice by 18.8%–70.6% (p < 0.05) compared with the control. Particularly, the brown rice Cd content under the co-application treatment (4500 kg/ha of soil applied LS, 90 kg/ha of Si fertilizer, and 0.4 g/L of foliar-sprayed Si fertilizer) was below 0.20 mg/kg in both seasons. Meanwhile, the Si content in rice was considerably enhanced by LS co-applied with Si fertilizer and negatively (p < 0.05) correlated with the rice Cd content. Therefore, the reduction of Cd bioavailability in soil and the antagonistic effect between Cd and Si in rice might be the key factors regulating Cd accumulation in rice via the co-application of LS and Si fertilizer.

Differences in the response mechanism of cadmium uptake, transfer, and accumulation of different rice varieties after foliar silicon spraying under cadmium-stressed soil.

Most studies have shown that foliar silicon (Si) spraying can reduce the risk of rice quality safety caused by cadmium (Cd) contamination. However, it has recently been found that different rice varieties have different responses to Si. Therefore, we selected six rice varieties (YHSM, YXY1179, YXYLS, JLK1377, MXZ2, and YLY900) to compare the differences in the effects of leaf spray on Cd accumulation among different varieties. According to the change in Cd content in brown rice after Si application, the six rice varieties were divided into two types: Si-inhibited varieties (JLY1377, MXZ2, LY900, and YXYLS) and Si-stimulated varieties (WY1179 and YHSM). For Si-inhibited varieties, the Cd content of rice was reduced by 13.5%-65.7% after Si application. At the same time, the Cd content of the root, stem, leaf, panicle, and glume decreased to different degrees, the Cd content of the cell wall component increased by 2.2%-37.6%, the extraction state of Cd with strong mobile activity (ethanol-extracted and deionized water-extracted) was changed to the extraction state of Cd with weak mobile activity (acetic acid-extracted and hydrochloric acid-extracted), and the upward transport coefficient of different parts was reduced. For Si-stimulated varieties, Si application increased the Cd content of rice by 15.7%-24.1%. At the same time, the cell soluble component Cd content significantly increased by 68.4%-252.4% and changed the weakly mobile extraction state Cd to the strong mobile extraction state, increasing the upward transport coefficient of different sites. In conclusion, different rice varieties have different responses to Si. Foliar Si spraying inhibits the upward migration of Cd of Si-inhibited varieties, thereby reducing the Cd content of rice, but it has the opposite effect on Si-stimulated varieties. This result reminds us that we need to consider the difference in the effect of varieties in the implementation of foliar Si spraying in remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy fields.

Simultaneous alleviation of Cd availability in contaminated soil and accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) by Fe-Mn oxide-modified biochar

Fe-Mn oxide-modified biochar (BC-FM) was used to remediate Cd-contaminated soil and mitigate Cd accumulation in rice. The roles of Fe and Mn in soil Cd immobilization and in controlling Cd uptake by rice were investigated via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and chemical analysis. Fe and Mn loaded on BC-FM increased the removal efficiencies of CaCl2 extractable Cd in soil and Cd in pore water compared to those in only biochar (BC)-treated soil, with maximum removal rates at 67.9 % and 77.8 %, respectively. The XPS results indicated that the redox reactions of the Fe-Mn oxides on BC-FM surface affected Cd immobilization in the soil. The Fe (II/III) components on BC-FM were primarily converted to Fe3O4 in the soil system, which may form stable complexes with Cd2+ (Fe–O–Cd) during the entire rice growth period, and Cd may be bound to MnO or Mn2O3 in the form of CdMn2O4. The excellent adsorption performance of BC-FM enhanced by Fe-Mn oxides reduced the available Cd in the soil and stimulated Fe and Mn transport in rice, thereby inhibiting Cd accumulation in the aerial parts of rice. Cd concentrations in brown rice under BC-FM treatments reached the national safety standard (0.2 mg/kg, GB2762–2017). And BC-FM significantly increased the biomass of brown rice with a maximum rate of 26.8 %. These findings suggest that BC-FM could be used as an efficient material for Cd-contaminated soil remediation, and Fe-Mn plays important role in immobilizing Cd in soil and reducing Cd transport in rice.

Soil inorganic amendments produce safe rice by reducing the transfer of Cd and increasing key amino acids in brown rice

The digestibility of cadmium (Cd) in brown rice is directly related to amino acid metabolism in rice and human health. In our field study, three kinds of alkaline calcium-rich soil inorganic amendments (SIAs) at three dosages were applied to produce safe rice and improve the quality of rice in Cd-contaminated paddy. With the increased application of SIA, Cd content in iron plaque on rice root significantly increased, the transfer of Cd from rice root to grain significantly decreased, and then Cd content in brown rice decreased synchronously. The vitro digestibility of Cd in brown rice was estimated by a physiologically based extraction test. Results showed that more than 70% of Cd in brown rice could be digested by simulated gastrointestinal juice. Based on the total and digestible Cd contents in brown rice to evaluate the health risk, the application of 2.25 ton SIA/ha could produce safe rice in acidic slightly Cd-contaminated paddy soils. The amino acids (AAs) in brown rice were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The contents of 5 key AAs (KAAs) that actively respond to environmental changes increased significantly with the increased application of SIA. The structural equation model indicated that KAAs could be affected by the Cd translocation capacity from rice root to grain, and consequently altered the ratio of indigestible Cd in brown rice. The formation of indigestible KAAs-Cd complexes by combining KAAs (phenylalanine, leucine, histidine, glutamine, and asparagine) with Cd in brown rice could be considered a potential mechanism for reducing the digestibility of Cd.

Remediation Effect and Mechanism of Inorganic Passivators on Cadmium Contaminated Acidic Paddy Soil

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the main pollutants in acidic paddy fields, and its accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and subsequent transfer to the food chain is an important environmental issue in China. In our field study, three types of inorganic passivators (silicon-calcium-magnesium-potassium fertilizer (SCMK), calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer (CMP), and lime (L) at the rate of 750, 1500, and 2250 kg·hm-2, respectively) were applied to acidic paddy soils polluted by the heavy metal Cd in southern Zhejiang province. The objective of this study was to reveal the effects and chemical mechanisms of passivators on soil acidification and Cd accumulation in rice. The field experimental results showed that the three passivators could effectively improve soil acidification and reduce Cd accumulation in rice grains. The application of 2250 kg·hm-2 SCMK, CMP, and L increased soil pH by 0.62, 0.65, and 0.86 units; decreased exchangeable acidity by 67%, 69%, and 78%; and reduced the content of Cd in brown rice by 73%, 68%, and 77%, respectively. The application of 2250 kg·hm-2 SCMK, CMP, and L reduced the content of Cd in brown rice planted on polluted paddy rice fields to lower than 0.2 mg·kg-1, which reached the national food safety standard. Compared with the control, the application of SCMK, CMP, and L significantly (P<0.05) decreased the content of available Cd extracted by DTPA; decreased the contents of weak acid-extractable (F1) and reducible (F2) Cd; and increased the content of residual (F4) Cd. Correlation analyses indicated that Cd content in brown rice was significantly negatively correlated with soil pH and exchangeable cation content and significantly positively correlated with DTPA-Cd, weak acid-extractable (F1) and reducible (F2) Cd, and exchangeable Al contents. The partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) was used to analyze the relationship between the Cd content of brown rice, DTPA-Cd, and various chemical forms of Cd and soil properties. The direct path coefficients of soil exchangeable cations on Cd content in brown rice, available cadmium, and rice yield were -0.566, -0.866, and 0.873, respectively. Soil pH indirectly affected Cd content of brown rice mainly by directly affecting available Cd in soil. Field experiments demonstrated that the three passivators SCMK, CMP, and L were effective technologies for the safe production of rice in acidic paddy soils polluted by Cd. The possible mechanism for passivators reducing the bioavailability of Cd in soil and its accumulation in brown rice contributed to increased exchangeable cations in the soils. These findings could provide a scientific basis for the safe production of rice in acidic paddy soil polluted by heavy metals.

Reduction of cadmium bioavailability in paddy soil and its accumulation in brown rice by FeCl3 washing combined with biochar: A field study

Cadmium (Cd) removal from paddy soil to reduce Cd accumulation in brown rice is essential for agroecology, food safety, and human health. In this study, we demonstrate that ferric chloride (FeCl3) washing combined with biochar treatment efficiently remediates Cd-contaminated paddy soil in field trials. Our results showed that 30.9 % of total Cd and 41.6 % of bioavailable Cd were removed by the addition of 0.03 M FeCl3 at a liquid/soil ratio of 1.5:1. The subsequent addition of 1 % biochar further reduced bioavailable Cd by 36.5 and 41.5 %, compared with FeCl3 washing or biochar treatment alone. The principal component regression analysis showed that the Cd content in brown rice was primarily affected by the bioavailable Cd in soil. The combined remediation contributed to the decreased Cd contents in brown rice by 45.5–62.5 %, as well as a 2.7–11.8 % increase in rice yield. The Cd contents in brown rice decreased to 0.12 and 0.04 mg kg−1 in two cultivars of rice (Zhuliangyou189 and Zhuliangyou929), lower than the national food safety standard limit value of China (0.2 mg kg−1). Meanwhile, the combined remediation promoted the restoration of soil pH and organic matter as well as the improvement of available nutrients. This finding suggests that the combination of FeCl3 washing and biochar is an effective remediation strategy to minimize Cd bioavailability in paddy soil, and improves soil quality, thus contributing to food safety.

Co-incorporation of Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.), rice straw, and biochar strengthens the mitigation of Cd uptake by rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination is becoming a widespread concern because of its threat to global ecosystem health and food security. Co-incorporation of Chinese milk vetch (MV) and rice straw (RS) is a common agricultural practice in Southern China; however, the effects of combining these two materials with biochar on Cd bioavailability remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of MV, RS, rape straw biochar (RB), iron-modified biochar (FB), and their combinations on Cd uptake by rice through incubation and field experiments. The results showed that compared with the control without material input (CK), MV + RS (MR), MV + RS + RB (MRRB), and MV + RS + FB (MRFB) considerably reduced the Cd concentration in brown rice by 61.20 %, 65.38 %, and 62.65 %, respectively. Furthermore, the treatments increased the formation of iron‑manganese plaque (IMP) at different growth stages; MRRB and MRFB exhibited the highest increase rates among the treatments. Quantitatively, the Fe plaque and Mn plaque were increased by 20.61 %–47.23 % and 80.18 %–172.74 %, respectively. Compared with CK, the MRRB and MRFB treatments reduced the soil available Cd by 35.09 %–54.45 % and 38.20 %–50.20 %, respectively, at all stages. This decrease was substantially lower than that observed in the MV, RS, and MR treatments. Similar trends were observed in the incubation experiment. Additionally, the Community Bureau of Reference Sequential Extraction Analysis indicated that the MRRB and MRFB treatments converted the bioavailable Cd fractions into a stable form. Partial least squares path model and redundancy analysis revealed that pH was the major factor influencing Cd bioavailability. This study emphasized that the dual impact factors from the enhancement of Cd passivation capability and IMP formation jointly result in the reduction of Cd uptake by rice. Consequently, the co-incorporation of MV, RS, and biochar is promising for remediating Cd-contaminated paddy soils in Southern China.

Arsenic and cadmium concentrations in brown rice can be controlled by understanding the impacts of weekly water contributions before and after heading

ABSTRACT Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) are harmful to humans, and their concentrations in rice are affected by the water management strategies used in paddy fields. Water management, however, is considered a burden for farmers, and thus an efficient strategy by which to decrease As and Cd concentrations in brown rice is desired. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effects of water management on the total As and Cd concentrations in brown rice during the 3 weeks before and after heading on a weekly basis. Moreover, the study aimed to determine the differences in this effect among soil types and cultivars. Pot cultivation experiments of rice were conducted by applying two levels of weekly flooding or draining to an L12 orthogonal table, and their effects each week on the As and Cd concentrations in brown rice were identified. Redox potentials of soils decreased during flooding and increased during draining, but the decrease during flooding in Andosols was slower than that in Fluvisols. For the plants growing in Fluvisols, the total As and Cd concentrations in the brown rice increased and decreased with flooding, respectively, and an opposite trend was observed with draining. In the Japonica varieties ‘Koshihikari’ and ‘Hitomebore,’ water management during the first week from 0 to 2 days after heading had the greatest impact on As and Cd concentrations. However, in the Indica variety ‘Takanari,’ the weeks that most affected the As and Cd concentrations were the second and first week from the day after heading, respectively. In the Andosols, the Cd concentration was changed by water management as in the Fluvisols, but the same was not found for the As. This suggests that the effect of water management on the As concentration in brown rice could be nullified by the Andosols ability to absorb As. However, it was also possible that the effect of water management could not be detected due to the low As concentration of the Andosols. These results provide insights that will help to efficiently reduce As and Cd concentrations using information on the rice variety and soil type.

Solution chemistry mechanisms of exogenous silicon influencing the speciation and bioavailability of cadmium in alkaline paddy soil

The mechanism of silicon (Si) influencing cadmium (Cd) speciation and bioavailability in alkaline paddy soil solution remains unclear. Therefore, this study sought to elucidate the effect of Si on Cd by combining chemical analysis and rice pot experiments. In this work, the effects of Na2SiO3 alkalinity and the differences in Na+ were eliminated in all treatments, and the Cd speciation in soil solutions was determined in-situ using a Field-Donnan membrane technology (DMT) cell. Additionally, rice yields and the Cd content in various parts of the rice plant were studied. The results showed that Si application significantly increased rice biomass by 32% (P < 0.05) while significantly reduced the Cd content in brown rice by 52% (P < 0.01) and the free Cd2+ concentration in the soil solution. Further analysis of the interaction of Si and Cd using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that a Si-Cd complex was formed by Cd and Si-O groups. In summary, Si changed the chemical speciation of Cd in the alkaline soil solution and formed a water-soluble Si-Cd complex that the rice could not absorb, consequently reducing Cd bioavailability.

Effects of Phosphorus Sufficiency and Deficiency on Cadmium Uptake and Transportation by Rice

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient element for crop growth. The effects of P surplus or deficit on Cd absorption and transport in rice in Cd-polluted farmland is not clear. The effects of P deficiency and P sufficiency on Cd uptake, transport, and accumulation in rice under Cd stress were investigated by applying different levels of phosphorus (NaH2PO4) in a hydroponic experiment. The results showed that:① with the increase in ρ(P) (1.5-48.0 mg·L-1), the biomass in all parts of the rice plants had no obvious change, and the contents of photosynthetic pigment (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoid) firstly ascended and then descended; high concentrations of P inhibited the synthesis of photosynthetic pigments. ② Under Cd stress, when the P was deficient (1.5-6.0 mg·L-1) or sufficient (12.0-48.0 mg·L-1), the Cd content in different parts of the rice increased with the increase in P addition level, and the maximum increase in Cd content in brown rice was 132.1% and 191.2%, respectively. ③ The P/Cd of brown rice showed a piecewise decreasing rule under P deficiency and P sufficiency, and the Cd content in brown rice was significantly negatively correlated with P/Cd (P<0.01). These results indicated that elevating phosphorus concentration when rice was under both the conditions of P deficiency and P sufficiency could promote the uptake and transport of Cd by rice roots under Cd stress, thus increasing the accumulation of Cd in aboveground parts and the risk of excessive Cd in rice.
