Will Private School Choice Save Catholic Schools in the U.S.? Interrogating the Catholic School Sector’s Relationship to the School Privatization Movement

A central part of the private school choice coalition in the U.S. has been the participation of Catholic school stakeholders. The purpose of this article is to examine how Catholic school advocacy became linked to private school choice advocacy by highlighting the institutional and organizational crises facing Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the U.S. that led to sector-wide policy responses favoring choice. However, through an analysis of emerging trends in private school choice policy implementation, this paper raises questions about the efficacy of continued advocacy for private school choice policy within the Catholic sector.

The Effectiveness of Applying the Debate Method in Improving Students' Opinion Skills in Civics Subjects, Class VA, Muder Teresa Catholic Elementary School, Kupang City. Thesis, Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Citra Bangsa University Kupang. Supervisors: (Yulsy Marselina Nitte, S.H., M.Pd and Asti Yunita Benu, S.Pd., M.Pd).The effectiveness of applying the debate method can improve students' ability to express opinions in Civics learning, which is one of the important subjects to be studied by students at elementary school level. It can be said that because Civics is a subject whose application is closely related to everyday life. This research aims to find out whether the application of the debate method can improve students' ability to express opinions in the Civics class VA subject at Muder Teresa Catholic Elementary School, Kupang City. This research method is a type of qualitative research with a description method. The collection instruments in this research are observation sheets, interview guides or question sheets.The results of this research show students' lack of courage in expressing their opinions. The lack of student courage is caused by several factors including internal and external factors, namely, lack of student motivation in expressing opinions, students are sometimes bored and do not pay attention to learning, students' lack of motivation when speaking in public. Meanwhile, efforts that can be made by teachers are, learning using the debate method, motivating students, debating strategies in learning so that they can help students have the courage to express their opinions.

Can Decentralized School Systems Pursue Common Ends? An Analysis of Urban Catholic School and System Leaders’ Perceptions of Reform

There has been little research examining how decentralized Catholic diocesan systems have worked toward their stated system-wide goal of keeping urban Catholic schools sustainable. Through a new qualitative analysis of interviews with Catholic school and system leaders, we demonstrate in this article how leaders agreed about the issues preventing urban Catholic elementary schools from becoming operationally sustainable but disagreed about potential solutions to this problem. Our findings indicate these leaders believed decentralized systems constrained their ability to pursue coherent system-wide reforms. We connect these findings to broader calls for decentralization in large urban systems attempting to pursue educational equity initiatives.

Peningkatan Kemampuan Literasi dan Numerasi di SDK Maubesi II Kabupaten Timor Tengah Utara

This community service activity aims to improve literacy and numeracy skills for students at Maubesi 2 Catholic Elementary School, Insana Fafinesu District, North Central Timor Regency. This community service is carried out in several stages, namely coordinating/communicating with the TTU Regency Education and Culture Office and the target school, conducting initial observations, designing a work program and discussing it with the school, implementing the work program and evaluating the implementation of the work program. The community service methods used are communication, observation and implementation of work programs and evaluation. Based on the results of the community service carried out, it was found that there was an increase in literacy and numeracy skills as demonstrated by the increase in reading, writing and arithmetic skills of students at Maubesi 2 Catholic Elementary School. This was realized through the availability of learning media that was able to arouse students' interest in learning, mentoring. and structuring the classroom and library environment so that it influences enthusiasm for learning and participating in learning.

Anti-Black Racism in the Ontario Public School System: Problematizing the Labeling of Young Black Students as Troublemakers

This paper examines anti-Black racism in the Ontario public school system. Using the West-Hill Catholic Elementary School (a pseudonym) as a case study, it foregrounds the selective application of punishments inflicted upon Black students, including those often motivated by racist perceptions on the part of teachers, principals, and School Boards. Using the theories of biological determinism1 and the culture of poverty2 as conceptual frameworks, this paper investigates the factors to which school authorities attribute violent behavior on the part of Black students. This paper provides recommendations aimed at mitigating anti-Black racism in the Ontario public school system.

Exploring the Effect of Parental Support and School Environment on Student Academic Achievement: A Survey Study

Student academic achievement is a critical issue for educators and policymakers worldwide. Parents and schools play important roles in promoting student academic achievement. This study aims to investigate the impact of parental support and school environment on student academic achievement. To do so, we employed a quantitative approach using a survey research design. Data related to parental support and school were obtained by distributing two survey questionnaires to a total of 167 elementary school students, purposively drawn from diverse groups of Catholic elementary schools in Merauke District, South Papua Province, Indonesia. Meanwhile, data related to academic achievement were obtained by getting students’ academic transcripts. Obtained data were subjected to an inferential statistics analysis technique using the software SPSS version 21. The results of data analysis showed that parental support and school environment have a direct impact on student academic achievement, both partially and simultaneously. These findings underscore the importance of parental support and the need to create a supportive and positive school environment to improve students’ academic achievement.

Improving Learning Outcomes of Catholic Religious Education for Grade III Students Through The Storytelling Method

Learning outcomes are the mastery and abilities that students have achieved about the material and skills regarding the subject after receiving their learning experience. Learning outcomes can be measured from their own abilities, where in the learning process in the classroom students are more active and the ability of Catholic Religious Educator teachers to apply skills to the teaching and learning process can improve student learning outcomes. In teaching and learning activities at SDK Puubheto, especially in grade III Catholic Religious Education lessons, problems were found in teaching and learning activities, namely; Students feel bored because the classroom atmosphere is not conducive, teachers do not understand the right learning methods according to the age of students and are not skilled in applying learning methods, students are not actively involved in teaching and learning activities, teachers tend to only give assignments so that students lack understanding of the material, and student learning outcomes are low. The formulation of the problem in this study is how the influence of the storytelling method on improving student learning outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine how the influence of the application of storytelling learning methods on Catholic Religious Education subjects in improving learning outcomes. In improving learning outcomes, researchers use the application of storytelling methods in Catholic Religion subjects. The storytelling method is a learning strategy where the delivery is through oral speech by telling stories or events and information that is packaged creatively to attract children's attention. The results of the study found by researchers showed that the learning outcomes of students in each cycle increased from the pre-test results with a percentage of 35.71%, the percentage of post-test cycle I of 50%, and the percentage of post-test cycle II of 100%. It can be said that there is an increase in the learning outcomes of Catholic Religious Education through the application of storytelling methods in grade III of Puubheto Catholic Elementary School.

Implementasi Teknologi QR Code Tokoh Pahlawan Dalam Kegiatan Belajar Mengajar Di SD Katolik Yohanes Gabriel Sidodadi, Blitar

Technological advances in the modern era are now becoming a trend in the lives of every individual and in various fields. One of them is QR (Quick Response) Code technology in the Android-based Heroes application. This research explains the community service program, especially for partners at Yohanes Gabriel Catholic Elementary School located in Sidodadi, Garum District, Blitar Regency. Our service is by creating an application that contains sketches of the faces of Indonesian Heroes and their struggles both before and after independence, wrapped in short videos. The method used is face-to-face where we provide guidance to teachers in using the application we created and provide outreach to elementary school students regarding the application created. With this application which utilizes the latest technology, it has had a positive impact, especially for our partners at Yohanes Gabriel Catholic Elementary School, where the elementary school teachers can use the application we created in their teaching and learning activities.. Peningkatan Hasil Belajar Dan Sikap Kolaborasi Menggunakan Model PBL Berbantuan Media Audio Visual Pada Siswa Di SDK ST. MARIA 3 Malang

The situation of educational success in Indonesia is a complex issue and can be seen from various points of view. In some aspects, there has been progress, but there are still many challenges that need to be overcome. In order to advance quality education in Indonesia, the government has implemented a curriculum development policy, namely the Independent Learning Curriculum. The Independent Learning Curriculum is a curriculum with diverse intracurricular learning, where the content presented to students will be more optimal with the aim that students will have enough time to explore concepts and strengthen competencies. The Merdeka Curriculum also uses a project basis to strengthen the achievement of the Pancasila student profile. This project was developed based on a certain theme determined by the government. The Pancasila Student Profile is formed by six main dimensions, namely: Faith, noble character, and devotion to God Almighty, Independence, Cooperation, Global diversity, Critical reasoning, Creative. However, various challenges are experienced by educational practitioners in implementing this independent curriculum. One of them is regarding the use of learning models. Using the right method will influence the learning process and learning outcomes. One of them is the problem based learning model. This learning model is problem-based and learning orientation is a learning approach that focuses on students. In this model, the teacher acts as a facilitator or guide, who helps students to develop deeper understanding and relevant skills by motivating, stimulating questions, and supporting meaningful learning experiences. The aim of this research is to implement the Problem Based Learning model assisted by audio-visual media in class II Phase A of St. Catholic Elementary School. Maria III Malang can improve learning outcomes and collaborative attitudes of students; increasing the collaborative attitude of students using the Problem Based Learning model assisted by audio-visual media in class II Phase A of St, Maria III Catholic Elementary School, Malang; and the target of achieving student learning outcomes can be successful by using the Problem Based Learning model assisted by audio-visual media in class II Phase A of St. Maria III Catholic Elementary School, Malang. The type of research used is Classroom Action Research. Data collection techniques in this research used observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used consists of data reduction by selecting raw data into information, data presentation, namely presenting data in the form of descriptions, graphs, tables and drawing conclusions by making conclusions from research results that refer to the problem formulation. The use of the Problem Based Learning model is effective in helping to improve learning outcomes and the collaborative spirit of students on the material on the Holy Family of Nazareth and Jesus presented in the Temple of God, at Santa Maria III Catholic Elementary School, Malang.

Efforts to Improve Reading Ability Through Literacy Learning (Studies on Students at the Catholic Elementary School of ST. Vincentius Noongan)

The goal of this research was to discover how teaching literacy might improve the reading abilities of Class IV pupils at St.Vincentius Noongan Catholic Elementary School. We can increase kids' comprehension of reading texts and help them read correctly through literacy learning. The sort of study that will be employed is class action research (CAR). Classroom action research is carried out in order to solve issues and enhance teaching quality. Teachers do a sort of study known as classroom action research to solve issues in their classrooms. The goal of this study is to present a summary of the advancement of students' reading outcomes through literacy learning for students in St. Catholic Elementary School's class IV. Noongan, Vincentius. This classroom action research (CAR) includes four processes: preparation, activity, observation, and reflection. The findings of this study demonstrate the importance of the teacher's involvement in enhancing literacy learning for children so that they can accurately interpret the text, as well as the role of parents of kids after school. pupils' parents must also assess what their children may learn at school, such as the assignments assigned by the instructor, so that pupils always have parental support for the necessity of solid reading abilities.

PENERAPAN PEMBELAJARAN PROBLEM BASED LEARNING UNTUK MENINGKATKAN HASIL BELAJAR MATEMATIKA MATERI PECAHAN SISWA KELAS II SEKOLAH DASAR

In class II of the Merico room at Santa Ursula Ende Catholic Elementary School, students generally experience difficulties when asked to work on questions, both on the blackboard and in books, even though the students actually have good abilities. To overcome the problems above, the step that needs to be taken is to apply a problem based learning model. This research aims to improve Mathematics learning outcomes in class II fraction material by using a problem based learning model at Santa Ursula Catholic Elementary School in Ende, Ende Regency for the 2023/2024 academic year. This type of research is Classroom Action Research (PTK). This research went through the stages of planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The results of the descriptive analysis revealed that in cycle I the average student score was 69.88 and learning completeness reached 48%, while in cycle II the average student score was 82.22% and learning completeness reached 89%. In this way, the use of the problem based learning model can improve the mathematics learning outcomes of fraction material for Class II students in the Merico room at Santa Ursula Catholic Elementary School, Ende for the academic year 2023/2024.

Profile Implementation Pancasila Students in the Independent Curriculum in Mathematics

Mathematics subjects are considered by most students to be difficult. In the Free Learning Program, students find mathematics easy, because of various innovations from the teachers. The purpose of this study was to analyze the implementation of the Pancasila Student Profile in the Freedom to Learn curriculum in relation to Mathematics Learning. The research method descriptive uses qualitative. The analysis technique consists of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The subjects of this study were school principals, homeroom teachers and students. The selected informants in this study were teachers and principals who understood the profile of Pancasila students. Data validity technique with source triangulation. The results of this study indicate that 1) The planning for the implementation of the Pancasila Student Profile includes training, readiness of documents and completeness of facilities and infrastructure which are all intended for teachers. 2) Implementation of the implementation of the Pancasila Student Profile with planning, implementing, and evaluating learning activities in accordance with teacher competence. 3) Evaluation of implementation is carried out by teachers with school principals and teacher evaluations with students. Constraints in implementation have been made efforts to improve, so that the implementation of the Pancasila Student Profile in Mathematics Learning at Santa Maria Rembang Catholic Elementary School has been carried out properly.

Philantrophy in Education of Religious Tolerance in Kurikulum Merdeka at Elementary School Temanggung District

The multicultural Indonesian nation consisting of various tribes, languages, ethnicities, cultures, and religions must uphold tolerance education. including the implementation of the "Kurikulum Merdeka" in educational units in schools. Various cases of religious intolerance show a lack of voluntary action through an understanding of the treatment of volunteerism for social purposes through love (philanthropy) in the form of acts of generosity (compassion). This paper discusses the Philanthropy of Religious Tolerance Education in the Implementation of the "Kurikulum Merdeka" at Al-Kautsar Elementary School and Pangudi Utami Elementary School.This research qualitative field research with a data collection approach through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques in this study are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study show that philanthropy is always closely related to things that are engaged in charity or are closely related to material elements. This narrow view is currently beginning to erode, especially with the increasing interest of school students in philanthropic activities which are closely related to the behavior of those who do them out of concern. The meaning of philanthropy is expanding and developing. Philanthropic activities are increasingly organized and directed. During modern currents, forms of philanthropy emerge in society, one of which is philanthropy in implementing “Kurikulum Merdeka” with two different schools with students from Pangudi Utami Catholic Elementary School and Al Kautsar Islamic Elementary School.

The Teacher's Ability To Develop Creatif Dialogue In Learning In Elementary School

Teaching with a social studies curriculum is perceived as boring and trivial. This public perception requires teachers to make efforts to maximize the learning process with social studies content. The aim of this research is to describe teachers' ability to develop creative dialogue in elementary school learning, as seen from their planning and implementation in the learning process, as well as the factors influencing their ability. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The research subjects are students, teachers, and principals from St. Fransiskus Xaverius Catholic Elementary School in Tomohon City, GMIM 6 Elementary School in Tomohon, GMIM 5 Elementary School in Tomohon, and Uluindano Inpres Elementary School in Tomohon. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation study, with the researcher as the main instrument. The data analysis technique consists of four stages: categorization and codification, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions and verification. The validity of the research data is ensured through triangulation. The level of elementary school teachers' ability in Tomohon City to plan their teaching is not yet in accordance with the characteristics and essence of creative dialogue. Elementary school teachers in Tomohon City are able to initiate creative dialogue but have not been able to sustain and conclude it. The direction and distribution of teacher questions have successfully improved the process of learning creative dialogue, supported by teachers' ability to involve students in determining discussion topics and setting the timing of questions. However, the teachers' response to students' answers does not contribute to the conclusion of the teaching process, as teachers take over the final conclusion from students' answers. The ability of elementary school teachers in Tomohon City to evaluate the process of teaching creative dialogue shows that they are able to control the flow of learning but have not been able to maintain the continuity of the learning process. Energy justice in education sector: The impact of student demographics on elementary and secondary school energy consumption

Reducing school energy costs has become an important issue, while the energy saving should consider different school systems and student backgrounds. This study investigated the impact of student demographics on energy consumption in elementary and secondary schools and explores the difference of energy consumption in different types and levels of school systems. Data were collected from 3672 schools (including 3108 elementary and 564 secondary schools, respectively) in Ontario, Canada. The number of students whose first language is not English, the number of students who receive special education services, the number of school-aged children who live in low-income households, and student learning ability are all inversely proportional to energy consumption; student learning ability has the largest negative impact. The partial correlation between student enrollment and energy consumption has a trend of gradually increasing as the grade levels increase in Catholic elementary schools, Catholic secondary schools, and public secondary schools; however, the correlation shows a gradually decreasing trend with the increase in grade levels in public elementary schools. This study is helpful for policy-makers to clarify the energy implications of various student backgrounds and the energy consumption difference in different types and levels of school systems to facilitate their formulation of effective policies.

Pengaruh Komtmen Guru dan Motivasi Kerja terhadap Profesionalisme Guru Sekolah Dasar Katolik di Kota Ende

The teacher is the spearhead of the process of implementing education in schools. Teachers are required to be professional in carrying out their duties and responsibilities in the learning process. This study aims to determine the effect of teacher commitment and work motivation on the professionalism of Catholic elementary school teachers in the city of Ende. This research method is quantitative research with data collection techniques using questionnaires or questionnaires in the form of questionnaires about teacher commitment, work motivation, and teacher professionalism. Respondents in this study were teachers at a Catholic elementary school in the city of Ende. The number of samples in this study were 52 people. The results showed that teacher commitment and work motivation had a significant effect on teacher professionalism where a significance value of 0.000 <0.05 and an R square value of 0.405 means that the influence of teacher commitment and work motivation on teacher professionalism is 40.5%. In conclusion, the higher the teacher's commitment and work motivation, the higher the teacher's professionalism and conversely the lower the teacher's commitment and work motivation, the lower the teacher's professionalism.

Educational Effectiveness of Catholic Schools in Poland Based on the Results of External Exams

Church education boasts a rich history of achievements. European church education (referred to as Catholic) was already present at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries and in Poland at the end of the 11th (schools educating future members of the clergy). In Poland, the collapse of church education was marked by the communist system (1945–1989), and a dynamic revival was possible thanks to the democratic change in 1989. At present, Catholic schools, i.e., schools run by church legal entities and schools run by other legal or natural persons recognized as Catholic by decree of the diocesan bishop, entertain the same possibilities with respect to setup and operations on equal rights. Their number and proportion of the overall student population remain relatively stable. As the results published by District Examination Boards and rankings of Catholic schools show, the teaching efficiency of Catholic elementary schools is higher than average. High schools reach a very good level of education as well, although in their case, the dominance of Catholic schools is not in place. Teaching efficiency is one of many factors that influence the well-established position of Catholic schools.

Mental Revolution in Catholic Religious Education Learning Based on the Laudato Si' Curriculum

This study aims to analyze how the teacher's role in voluntarily doing new evangelization as a mediating variable between the teacher's professional competence and On the Care for Our Common Home ecotheological commitment. This study used a quantitative approach. The study population was all elementary-level Catholic religious education teachers in East Flores District. The sample was 110 Inpres Elementary School teachers, 128 Catholic Elementary School teachers and 44 Public Elementary Schools for a total of 282 teachers. Data collection used a questionnaire by utilizing google form. The data analysis technique used in this study is Structural Equation Model (SEM) using the statistical software AMOS version 22. The study findings revealed that Catholic religious education teachers' professional competence and eco-theological commitment could be a driving force in carrying out the most recent contextual new evangelization. It is beneficial for the new generation not to continue actions that cause environmental crises caused by adults. As a result, the earth can provide itself with a common home, a healthy, decent, and comfortable to live in for one big family consisting of all generations of living beings.

THE INFLUENCE OF ADOBE FLASH-BASED LEARNING MEDIA ON INTEREST IN LEARNING MATHEMATICS

This research is motivated by the results of the 2022 Public Report Card, namely the achievements of 2102 students at the elementary school level in private schools in Manado City, showing that the achievement of student learning outcomes is less than 50% reaching the minimum competency limit. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of Adobe Flash-based learning media (MPBAF) on interest in learning mathematics. This research is classified as a Quasi-Experimental Quantitative. The research model is "One Groups Pretest-Posttest Design". The population and subject are Catholic Elementary School 03. ST Yohanes Mapanget Barat with 22 students as respondents. Collecting data through interviews, questionnaires, and observations. To ensure the validity of the research results, validity and reliability tests were carried out. The technique used is SPSS-assisted regression analysis. Data were collected and tested for normality and linearity. Next, the researcher tested the t-test hypothesis, calculated how much influence the two variables had by looking for the value of R2/R square and then performed a regression analysis. In conclusion, the variable MPBAF has a significant effect on the variable of interest in learning mathematics.
