Developing a typology for residents and local development: a case study in Northern Greece

The understanding of residents' profile and attitude toward local development is critically important since it can guide the efforts to promote local development especially in rural areas which suffer economic disadvantage. Using categorical principal components analysis, categorical regression and cluster analysis, this paper identifies resident types in the Regional Unit of Drama in Greece based on the variables constituting local development and the factors contributing to local development. According to our analysis, the desire for development and development potential were the most important dimensions in local development and these dimensions were affected by participants' demographic characteristics. Moreover, there were three types of residents with the majority belonging to the first type which expressed a positive desire for development and perceived that the region involves a moderate development potential. Moreover, the results can be used to highlight implications for policymakers and local authorities as well as to point to opportunities for future research.

Influence of Building Maintenance Practices on the Security of Lives and Property in Public Housing in Lagos State, Nigeria

The desire for security has continued to receive research attention globally. One of the critical aspects has been on how best to secure lives and property in residential neighbourhood in urban areas in the Global south. Although several approaches have been identified on how best to secure the home environment, less research attention has been given to the how maintenance practices can enhance security of lives and property in mass housing environments. This study investigated the influence of building maintenance practices on security of lives and property, using the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) housing estates as case study. Household survey involving 1036 residents in 14 housing estates was conducted in the study area using questionnaire as the data collection instrument. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and categorical regression analysis. The result shows that spaces and components of the buildings under the control of individuals and/or households were more frequently maintained than those jointly used spaces. The pruning of flowers and trees, replacement of damaged doors in the buildings and sweeping of open spaces emerged as the top three maintenance practices with the most significant influence on the residents’ perception of security of lives and property in the estates. The study implies that maintenance activities should be focused on these three aspects with more attention given to jointly owned and used spaces and facilities if security of lives and property is to be achieved in mass housing environments.

Critical Review of Exposure and Effects: Implications for Setting Regulatory Health Criteria for Ingested Copper

Decades of study indicate that copper oral exposures are typically not a human health concern. Ingesting high levels of soluble copper salts can cause acute gastrointestinal symptoms and, in uncommon cases, liver toxicity in susceptible individuals with repeated exposure. This focused toxicological review evaluated the current literature since the last comprehensive reviews (2007–2010). Our review identified limitations in the existing United States and international guidance for determining an oral reference dose (RfD) for essential metals like copper. Instead, an alternative method using categorical regression analysis to develop an optimal dose that considers deficiency, toxicity, and integrates information from human and animal studies was reviewed for interpreting an oral RfD for copper. We also considered subchronic or chronic toxicity from genetic susceptibility to copper dysregulation leading to rare occurrences of liver and other organ toxicity with elevated copper exposure. Based on this approach, an oral RfD of 0.04 mg Cu/kg/day would be protective of acute or chronic toxicity in adults and children. This RfD is also protective for possible genetic susceptibility to elevated copper exposure and allows for background dietary exposures. This dose is not intended to be protective of patients with rare genetic disorders for copper sensitivity within typical nutritional intake ranges, nor is it protective for those with excessive supplement intake. Less soluble mineral forms of copper in soil have reduced bioavailability as compared with more soluble copper in water and diet, which should be considered in using this RfD for risk assessments of copper.

The Effect of Admission Year and Effort-Reward Imbalance Model on Engagement

Engagement has not been widely studied in the field of medical education. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between admission year and engagement, assuming that characteristics of admission cohorts might be different depending on year. Association between effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model and engagement was also reinvestigated. Data were collected from 164 students in The Catholic University of Korea, College of Medicine. Ninety-nine (18.97%) students in 2017 and 65 (12.38%) students in 2018 answered an online questionnaire measuring demographic variables, ERI, over-commitment (OC), negative affect, and engagement. Participants’ admission years were determined based on years in school they responded. Affiliation and year in school were removed because of their high correlation with admission year. Categorical regression analysis was performed. Admission year, binary ERI, and OC were significant explanatory variables in this categorical regression model (R2 = .312, Adjusted R2 = .255, F = 5.444, p = .000). Admission year, binary ERI, and OC accounted for 13.4%, 27.9%, and 9.4% of the importance in this model, respectively. Quantification plots for admission year and binary ERI showed that engagement was the highest in 2018 admission cohort but the lowest in 2013 admission cohort; being reciprocally rewarded for efforts was associated with higher scores of engagement. A certain admission cohort can be more engaged or less engaged in learning. This study also confirms that receiving proper rewards for efforts could be related to increase in engagement.

Does Empirically Derived Classification of Individuals with Subjective Cognitive Complaints Predict Dementia?

(1) Background: Early identification of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in people reporting subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) and the study of progression of cognitive decline are important issues in dementia research. This paper examines whether empirically derived procedures predict progression from MCI to dementia. (2) Methods: At baseline, 192 participants with SCC were diagnosed according to clinical criteria as cognitively unimpaired (70), single-domain amnestic MCI (65), multiple-domain amnestic MCI (33) and multiple-domain non-amnestic MCI (24). A two-stage hierarchical cluster analysis was performed for empirical classification. Categorical regression analysis was then used to assess the predictive value of the clusters obtained. Participants were re-assessed after 36 months. (3) Results: Participants were grouped into four empirically derived clusters: Cluster 1, similar to multiple-domain amnestic MCI; Cluster 2, characterized by subjective cognitive decline (SCD) but with low scores in language and working memory; Cluster 3, with specific deterioration in episodic memory, similar to single-domain amnestic MCI; and Cluster 4, with SCD but with scores above the mean in all domains. The majority of participants who progressed to dementia were included in Cluster 1. (4) Conclusions: Cluster analysis differentiated between MCI and SCD in a sample of people with SCC and empirical criteria were more closely associated with progression to dementia than standard criteria.

Issues and Challenges Involved In Green Building Concept Innovations Adoption In Construction Practice

Green concept is globally creating impact with diverse application at various facet of human endeavour. The concept involved the practice whereby energy is utilized in a way that it would not jeopardise continuity of energy usage in the environment. The aim of this study is to explore the issues and challenges that surround the adoption of green concept in Nigeria focusing on built environment with a view to enhancing the rate of adoption of the concept for an increased healthy environment. The study adopted convenience sampling method to pick the population for the study, which comprised of picking construction companies that engaged on a project that involved green building features. Population frame of 250 professionals that are registered with professional bodies that cut across 20 selected construction firms was used for the study. A structured questionnaire designed in Likert scale of 1 to 5 was distributed among 50 respondents for data collation. The data was later processed using content analysis, descriptive statistics and relative agreement index. Data was collated on parameters that include evaluation of existing issues and challenges involved in green building concept innovations adoption in construction practice, current green concept practice in construction, challenges involved in adoption of green concept in construction, critical issues involved in green concept adoption, drivers for success in the adoption of green concepts in construction, challenges involved in adoption of green concept in construction. Innovative illustrations of integration of green concepts in buildings. Mean Item Score was used with relative agreement index, this was used to rate the perception of respondents on parameters calibrated for respondents to answer. Categorical regression analysis was used to carry out comparative analysis of respondents’ submission on success factors that influences the adoption of green building concept and challenges involved in the adoption of green building. Some other parameters were further explored, they include, innovative approach to sustainable construction practice and perspectives to green building practice. The analysis of the study brought to fore factors to be taken into consideration for effective adoption of green building concept. The challenges such as thought reengineering and philosophical and cultural adjustment need to be further harnessed for people to leave the built environment better than it was met.

Healthcare utilization in infants and toddlers with asthma-like symptoms.

Recurrent asthma-like symptoms are common in infants, but few population studies describe diagnostic and treatment practice. Using the electronic data repository of Clalit Health Services, the largest integrated health care provider in Israel, we evaluated children born 2005-2012, who before 3 years of age had >3 episodes of asthma-like symptoms and/or >2 bronchodilator purchases within a year. We described health care utilization and the odds ratio for subsequent utilization after 3 and 12 months' controller therapy. The primary outcome measure was respiratory-related doctor visits. Linear and categorical regression analysis measured overall effectiveness of therapy. Among 689 171 infants, 262 900 (38.1%) had > 3 asthma-like episodes/year during at least 1 year. Of those, 26 108 (10%) purchased controller therapy: 20 316 (77.8%) inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) with or without leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRA), and 5792 (22.2%) LTRA alone. For these 26 108 over 3 months there were 93 845 respiratory-related doctor visits, 3110 hospital admissions, 5568 diagnoses of pneumonia, 9960 chest X-rays, 37 127 purchases for oral steroids, and 45 142 for antibiotics courses. Healthcare utilization decreased following ICS ± LTRA and LTRA alone, respectively, as follows: doctor visits 7% and 3%, chest X-rays 16% and 17%, bronchodilators 20% and 11%, systemic steroids 17% and 12%, and antibiotics by 35% and 22%, (P < .001 for all). Twelve months' therapy remained effective. Asthma-like symptoms are common in infants. Health care utilization is very high and physician practices should be reassessed. Following controller therapy, health care utilization decreased. Yet controllers were prescribed in only a minority of eligible children.

Assessing Residents’ Satisfaction with Planning and Neighbourhood Facilities of Some Public Housing Estates in Benin City, Nigeria

Abstract The objective of the study is to analytically assess the residents’ perception of planning of six housing estates and their satisfaction levels in Benin City, Edo state, Nigeria. The population of the study comprises all residents of the six housing estates in Benin City as at 2018 which is the study period. The data were collected from the six (6) estates covered by this study: Oluku Housing Estate, EDPA Housing Estates Ugbowo, Federal Housing Estate, Oregbeni, Federal Housing Estate on Ikpoba Hill, Iyekogba Housing Estate, Ebo Village, and Andrew Wilson Housing Estate, Evbuoriaria. A total of 1200 copies of questionnaires were administered across the six housing estates. However, the total response rate of 1000 was achieved as only these copies of questionnaires were retrieved in usable format. Descriptive statistical tools such as means, standard deviations, kruskal-willis test and categorical regression analysis were utilized for the data analysis. The result showed that the relative satisfaction index scores for the all the estates are on the fairly satisfied region (RSI: 2.1-3.0) and this implies that residents are fairly satisfied with the estate planning conditions. The Kruskal-willis test confirms the absence of any significant differences in RSI scores across the estates while the categorical regression analysis results shows that estate planning has a positive effect on residents satisfaction and this is significant at 5% (p=0.003) which implies improvement in estate planning results in higher satisfaction levels. The study recommends the need for Government policy to encourage a decent living environment in terms of planning of estates.

The Influence of Impression Material on the Accuracy of the Master Cast in Implant Restorations

Aim: The precise framework fit is important for the success of implant restorations. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of two different impression materials both of their medium viscosity on the master cast accuracy when parallel and inclined implants were used. Materials and Methods: An epoxy master cast with three implants was fabricated. The first two implants were parallel to each other and perpendicular to the horizontal plane and the third implant had a 250 inclination in reference to the other two. A passively fitting metal framework that was fabricated over this master cast was used to measure accuracy of fit. Five closed tray impressions for each medium viscosity material (polyether and polyvinyl-siloxane) tested were taken and the respective ten stone casts with three implant analogs were fabricated. The metal framework in the master cast, was fixed in the new specimens and the micro-gap between this prosthesis and the implant analogs was evaluated. The specimens were observed to an optical microscope and digital photography. Results and Conclusion: The data were statistically analysed using a computer software and t-test. Polyether exhibited higher micro-gap mean values (93,4 to 61,8 μm) compared to polyvynil siloxane (30,47 to 14,83μm). The differences were statistically significant only for implant B. The categorical regression analysis (p &lt; 0.01) for all implants showed that the marginal micro-gap was affected by the impression material (94.1%) and significantly by the type of it. The micro-gap values were higher for polyether compared to polyvinyl-siloxane. The torqued implant did not exhibit any statistically significant effect.

Does the lower extremity alignment affect the risk of falling?

This study aims to investigate the effects of knee and foot alignments on the risk of falling. Between April 2016 and December 2016, a total of 74 individuals (24 males, 50 females; mean age 32.2±4.9 years; range 18 to 65 years) were included in the study. The knee Q angle and Chippaux-Smirak Index (CSI), Arch Index, and foot progression angle (FPA) evaluated by pedobarography were used for the assessment of the lower extremity alignment. The fall risk was evaluated by the Fall Index, Fourier 56 Index (F56), and Stability Index. The fall index was found to be correlated with the Q angle, CSI, the Arch index, and FPA (p<0.05). Q angle, Arch Index, and FPA which were explained 40% of the variance of the fall index. The Q angle was correlated with F56 and the stability index at the most position (p<0.05). The CSI was correlated with the F56 and the stability index at two and three positions, respectively (p<0.05); however, the Arch Index and FPA were not correlated with the F56 and Stability Index at any of the eight positions (p>0.05). According to the categorical regression analysis, the Q angle was the most effective on the F56 and Stability Index. Our study results suggest that lower extremity malalignment increases the risk of falling. We believe that the risk of falling can be decreased by the reduction of these malalingments and, thus, mortality and morbidity associated with the fall can be reduced as well.

Assessment of Designers’ Perception of Post Conflict Housing Schemes for Internally Displaced Persons

With millions of internally displaced persons (IDPs) around the world, there is need to implement durable housing solutions post-conflict, that involves sustainable integration and sustainable reintegration using long term shelter programmes in the rural and urban areas. The study aims to assess designers’ assessment of post conflict housing schemes (PCHS) for internally displaced persons. Using a cross-sectional survey, the study utilized a questionnaire instrument distributed to one hundred (100) design professionals that have cognate field experience in the design, construction and management of post-conflict housing schemes. Statistical tools of bar chart, principal component analysis, categorical regression and one-way analysis of variance by SPSS v.21 was utilized. The study revealed that designers considered features such as external design and services, socio-cultural and space and maintenance features in the design of PCHS. Generalized factors considered in the selection of these features include demands of the household, choice/selection of building materials and population of IDPs. The study revealed that the failure of PCHS could be because of politics/partisanship, lack of international assistance/aid, need to make profit and non-involvement of IDPs in the rebuilding process, while the success of the scheme could be engendered by adequate participation of IDPs, effective monitoring mechanisms and increased government and non-governmental organizations’ (NGOs) participation. In conclusion, the study developed a framework for the design of PCHS for IDPs. The study recommended that professional designers should objectively consider the contributions and characteristics of IDPs in the design of PCHS. In addition, international bodies should increase pressure on government to increase commitment in re-settling IDPs. NGOs should not relent in their efforts.

Neighbourhood characteristics and their relationship to sense of community in poor residential neighbourhoods in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria

This paper focuses on the contribution of neighbourhood socio-physical characteristics on sense of community, and the relationship between sense of community and neighbourhood characteristics in poor residential neighbourhoods in Akure, Nigeria. Previous research has suggested several interrelated components which were integrated into this study: the social and physical characteristics of the neighbourhood and the socio-economic characteristics of the residents. Four specific residential neighbourhoods in the core of Akure were selected for the study, 532 questionnaires were successfully administered and analysed with frequency distribution and categorical regression analysis. The regression analysis confirmed a significant relationship between neighbourhood physical characteristics and sense of community (sum of square = 63.444; df = 24; p 0.000). Sense of community was also found to have a significant relationship with neighbourhood physical characteristics (sum of square = 71.107; df = 25; p 0.000). Variables on trust and social cohesion were the strongest predictors of neighbourhood physical characteristics. Socio-economic variables such as sex, age, education and income were strong predictors of sense of community. The paper concludes that sense of community, if well utilised, can result in neighbourhood improvement while neighbourhood physical characteristics are an essential tool in building a strong sense of community, particularly in poor residential neighbourhoods.

Nexus between the participation of residents in house design and residential satisfaction in Akure, Nigeria

This study examined the relationship between residents’ level of participation in house design and level of residential satisfaction in Akure, Nigeria. The study was based on the idea that the goal of housing projects is to provide satisfactory environments for users. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 304 household heads in transitional and peripheral zones of the city. Data were obtained through a structured questionnaire and focus group discussions and observations. The obtained data were subsequently subjected to single-factor descriptive analysis, mean satisfaction scoring, and categorical regression analysis. Results showed a positive significant relationship between the level of resident participation in house design and the level of residential satisfaction. The significant participatory predictors of satisfaction were number of bedrooms, general house design, development of the brief for the design, arrangement of interior spaces, and selection of finishing materials. Space size and building materials were not significant predictors in this context. The obtained p-value of 0.000 indicated that the regression model was significant. This study recommends a high level of resident participation in house design to achieve a high level of residential housing satisfaction in Nigeria.

Assessing the relationship between house types and residential satisfaction in Tabriz, Iran

ABSTRACTThis research investigates the association between house type and residential satisfaction in terms of neighbourhood and dwelling acceptability to occupants. Using a questionnaire survey, 328 households were sampled to evaluate the perceived residential satisfaction among three major house types of single-unit houses, multi-unit apartment houses and housing complexes in Tabriz, Iran. One-way analysis of variance and categorical regression analysis were used to analyse the data. Data analysis indicated that a significant relationship exists between house type and residential satisfaction with respect to selected variables of building amenities, privacy of dwelling units, school accessibility, quality of access roads and satisfaction with neighbours. Results of regression analysis revealed that the main predictors of residential satisfaction are not the same for all house types. While neighbourhood characteristics are the main predictors of residential satisfaction for all house types in Tabriz, building characteristics impact only satisfaction of apartment residents. This study has implications for residential planning in Iran, and confirms the need for housing planners and development agencies to consider relevant aspects of users’ preferences, which include their quest for suitable house types, when conceptualizing housing designs and residential development.

The application of PBPK models in estimating human brain tissue manganese concentrations

Mn is an essential element that causes neurotoxicity in humans when inhaled at high concentrations. This metal has well-recognized route-dependent differences in absorption, with greater proportionate uptake for inhalation versus dietary exposure. Physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models for Mn have included these route specific differences in uptake and their effect on delivery of Mn to target tissues via systemic circulation. These PBPK models include components describing ingestion and inhalation, homeostatic control (concentration dependent biliary elimination and gastrointestinal absorption), and delivery to target sites within the brain. The objective of this study was to combine PBPK modeling of target tissue Mn concentration and categorical regression analysis to identify Mn intake levels (both by food and air) that are expected to cause minimal toxicity. We first used the human PBPK model to describe blood Mn data from three occupational exposure studies, demonstrating consistency between model predictions and measured data. The PBPK model was then used to predict concentrations of Mn in the globus pallidus (the presumed target tissue for motor function disruption in humans) for various epidemiological studies. With the predicted globus pallidus concentration of Mn, we conducted categorical regression modeling between globus pallidus Mn and severity-scored neurological outcome data from the human cohorts. This structured tissue dose – response analysis led to an estimated 10% extra risk concentration (ERC10) of 0.55μg/g Mn in the globus pallidus, which is comparable to similar values estimated by the Agency of Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and Health Canada (after translation from external exposure to tissue dose). The steep dose-response curve below this ERC10 value may be used to inform the choice of adjustment factor to translate the ERC10 as a point of departure to a reference concentration for occupational or environmental exposure to Mn. Because these results are based on human epidemiological data and a human PBPK model, adjustment or translation of results from animals to humans is not required.

Country-level variables and imagined national communities within EU-15 countries

This study analyses to what extent there are similarities and differences between EU-15 countries with regard to their citizens’ national identities; as well as the influence of country-level variables on identity patterns within clusters of countries. It uses different quantitative techniques and the European Values Study 2008 data release. First, clusters of countries are formed using identity variables. Next, country-level variables dealing with economic performance, politics, history and ethnic-cultural traits are operationalized and tested through categorical regression and discriminant analysis. Results confirm that there are clusters of countries with particular configurations of identity patterns and that country-level variables influence identity.

Relationship Between Household Livestock Keeping and Nutritional Status of Under-5 Children in Rural Parts of the Eastern Province of Zambia

A case-control study was conducted to determine the relationship between household livestock keeping and malnutrition levels of under-5 children. A questionnaire was used to capture data on the hypothesized risk factors. Fisher’s Exact test was used to determine associations between categorical variables and binary logistic regression analysis to determine predictors of malnutrition among under-5 children. A total of 145 households were sampled using a stratified random sampling method. About 72.4% (95% confidence interval [CI] = [63.9%, 81.0%]) of households in the study area kept livestock and the overall level of malnutrition was 34.5% (CI = [21.3%, 47.7%]). Livestock keeping among households that were cases was 31.4% (95% CI = [22.5%, 40.3%]) and slightly lower than those from households that were controls at 68.6% (95% CI = [57.9%, 59.3%]) although this was not statistically significant ( p = .243). Crop farming alone was also found not to be significantly associated with malnutrition of under-5 children at household level ( p = .447). However, mixed farming (growing crops and keeping livestock) at household level was found to be significantly associated with malnutrition levels of the under-5 children ( p = .008). The level of mixed farming among the cases, 31.6% (95% CI = [17.7%, 45.5%]), was lower than those among the controls, which was 68.3% (95% CI = [59.1%, 77.5%]). There was no association between livestock keeping and malnutrition in both the cases and control groups. However, mixed farming (crop farming and keeping livestock) was associated with a significant reduction in malnutrition among under-5 children.

SFRP1 is a possible candidate for epigenetic therapy in non-small cell lung cancer.

BackgroundNon-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains a lethal disease despite many proposed treatments. Recent studies have indicated that epigenetic therapy, which targets epigenetic effects, might be a new therapeutic methodology for NSCLC. However, it is not clear which objects (e.g., genes) this treatment specifically targets. Secreted frizzled-related proteins (SFRPs) are promising candidates for epigenetic therapy in many cancers, but there have been no reports of SFRPs targeted by epigenetic therapy for NSCLC.MethodsThis study performed a meta-analysis of reprogrammed NSCLC cell lines instead of the direct examination of epigenetic therapy treatment to identify epigenetic therapy targets. In addition, mRNA expression/promoter methylation profiles were processed by recently proposed principal component analysis based unsupervised feature extraction and categorical regression analysis based feature extraction.ResultsThe Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway was extensively enriched among 32 genes identified by feature extraction. Among the genes identified, SFRP1 was specifically indicated to target β-catenin, and thus might be targeted by epigenetic therapy in NSCLC cell lines. A histone deacetylase inhibitor might reactivate SFRP1 based upon the re-analysis of a public domain data set. Numerical computation validated the binding of SFRP1 to WNT1 to suppress Wnt signalling pathway activation in NSCLC.ConclusionsThe meta-analysis of reprogrammed NSCLC cell lines identified SFRP1 as a promising target of epigenetic therapy for NSCLC.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12920-016-0196-3) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

The size and fairness of gaps in employee remuneration are difficult to prove because of the uniqueness of the determinants of employee remuneration in different organisations. The purpose of the research on which this article is based was to review the distribution of employee remuneration across categories of job function and gender in South African small to medium-sized organisations. A purposive sampling method was used and categorical multiple regression analysis was performed. The overall findings of the research suggest that significant distribution of employee remuneration across categories of job function and gender exist in large organisations compared to smaller organisations.

Are religiosity and prayer use related with multiple behavioural risk factors for chronic diseases in European adults aged 50+ years?

ObjectivesBehavioural risk factors for chronic diseases involve factors relating to lifestyle habits. This study examined the relationship of religious and spiritual beliefs with the adoption and presence of multiple behavioural risk factors (MBRFs) in European adults. Study designCross-sectional study. MethodsData were used from 16,557 individuals, aged 50+ years, participating in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (2004/05). MBRFs clustering was defined by high body weight, smoking, physical inactivity and risky alcohol consumption, and regression estimations with religiosity and prayer use were assessed based on sampling weights. ResultsIn total, 79.4% of participants had received religious education, 33.4% had used prayer ‘≥1 time/day’ and 53.3% had clustering of 2+ MBRFs. Lower prevalence of smoking was found in males (20.6% vs. 29.4%, P < 0.05), as well as in females (13.1% vs. 22.6%, P < 0.05), who prayed ‘≥1 time/day’, compared to those who never prayed. Categorical regression analysis revealed that the presence of MBRFs was associated negatively with religious education (standardized beta = −0.048, P < 0.001) and positively with low frequency of prayer use (standardized beta = 0.056, P < 0.001). ConclusionsHaving received religious education and prayer use were related to the presence of fewer MBRFs in European adults aged 50+ years. These lifestyle factors should be assessed as potential determinants of MBRFs adoption when examining chronic disease development in multicultural populations.
