High Oxygen Reduction Efficiency and Durability of Nano-Honeycomb Pt3(NiFeCo) Replenished by High-Entropy Metallic Glass Support.

Developing low-Pt oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with high efficiency and robustness is critical for practical fuel cells. The most advanced ORR catalysts either feature high percentages of Pt (>70 at.%) or exhibit poor durability when reducing Pt loading. Herein, a multicomponent solid-solution Pt3(FeCoNi) honeycomb nano-framework supported by the specially designed high-entropy metallic glass (MG) is reported for efficient ORR. This hybrid catalyst with a low surface Pt loading of 5.79µgcm-2 displays exceptional mass and specific activities of 7.02Amgpt -1 and 8.15mAcmPt -2 at 0.9V, respectively, which are ≈15 and 22 times higher compared with commercial Pt/C. The analyses reveal the weakened chemisorption of oxygenated species, which is induced by the strong strain and ligand effects originating from the synergistic multicomponent alloying. This in turn enhances the intrinsic ORR activity. Moreover, benefiting from a unique replenishment behavior, the hybrid catalyst delivers ultra-high durability with negligible activity decay even after 50 000 potential cycles. This mechanism is achieved by sacrificing the interior MG supplementary support to dynamically compensate for the loss of catalytically active surface. The work provides an alternative way to design more efficient and durable low-Pt electrocatalysts for electrochemical devices.

Customized Heteronuclear Dual Single‐Atom and Cluster Assemblies via D‐Band Orchestration for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

AbstractAdvanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, integrating with well‐dispersed single atom (SA) and atomic cluster (AC) sites, showcase potential in bolstering catalytic activity. However, the precise structural modulation and in‐depth investigation of their catalytic mechanisms pose ongoing challenges. Herein, a proactive cluster lockdown strategy is introduced, relying on the confinement of trinuclear clusters with metal atom exchange in the covalent organic polymers, enabling the targeted synthesis of a series of multicomponent ensembles featuring FeCo (Fe or Co) dual‐single‐atom (DSA) and atomic cluster (AC) configurations (FeCo‐DSA/AC) via thermal pyrolysis. The designed FeCo‐DSA/AC surpasses Fe‐ and Co‐derived counterparts by 18 mV and 49 mV in ORR half‐wave potential, whilst exhibiting exemplary performance in Zn‐air batteries. Comprehensive analysis and theoretical simulation elucidate the enhanced activity stems from adeptly orchestrating dz2‐dxz and O 2p orbital hybridization proximate to the Fermi level, fine‐tuning the antibonding states to expedite OH* desorption and OOH* formation, thereby augmenting catalytic activity. This work elucidates the synergistic potentiation of active sites in hybrid electrocatalysts, pioneering innovative targeted design strategies for single‐atom‐cluster electrocatalysts.

Nickel-Nitrogen Doped MnO2 as Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalyst for Aluminum Air Batteries.

Aluminum-air battery has the advantages of high energy density, low cost and environmental protection, and is considered as an ideal next-generation energy storage conversion system. However, the slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in air cathode leads toitsunsatisfactory performance. Here, we report an electrode made of N and Ni co-doped MnO2nanotubes. In alkaline solution, Ni/N-MnO2has higher oxygen reduction activity than undoped MnO2, with an initial potential of 1.00 V and a half-wave potential of 0.75 V. This is because it has abundant defects, high specific surface area and sufficient Mn3+active sites, which promote the transfer of electrons and oxygen-containing intermediates.Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that MnO2doped with N and Ni atoms reduces the reaction overpotential and improves the ORR kinetics. The peak power density and energy density of the Ni/N-MnO2air electrodeincreased by 34.03 mW·cm-2and 316.41 mWh·g-1, respectively. The results show that N and Ni co-doped MnO2nanotubes are a promising air electrode, which can provide some ideas for the research of aluminum-air batteries.

Oxygen Vacancy-Mediated Synthesis of Inter-Atomically Ordered Ultrafine Pt-Alloy Nanoparticles for Enhanced Fuel Cell Performance.

Pt-based intermetallics are expected to be the highly active catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells but still face great challenges in controllable synthesis of interatomically ordered and ultrafine intermetallic nanoparticles. Here, we propose an oxygen vacancy-mediated atomic diffusion strategy by mechanical alloying to reduce the energy barrier of the transition from interatomic disordering to ordering, and to resist interparticulate sintering via strong M-O-C bonding. This synthesis results in a nanosized core/shell structure featuring an interatomically ordered PtM core and a Pt shell of two to three atomic layers in thickness and can be extended to the multicomponent PtM (M = Co, FeCo, FeCoNi, FeCoNiGa) systems. The electron enrichment in the Pt outer shell induced by the compressive strain leads to the enhanced antibonding orbital occupation below the Fermi level and accelerated OH* desorption kinetics. The optimized PtCo-O/C-6 catalyst presents excellent ORR activity (mass activity = 1.28 A mgPt-1 at 0.9 ViR-free, peak power densities = 2.38/1.25 W cm-2 in H2-O2/-air) and durability (∼1% activity loss in over 50 h in air condition) in fuel cells at a total Pt loading of 0.1 mgPt cm-2. Furthermore, we establish a systematic correlation to elucidate the formation mechanisms of highly ordered intermetallic catalysts underlying oxygen vacancies. This study provides a general approach for the large-scale production of highly ordered and nanosized Pt-dispersed intermetallic catalysts.

Boosting the Performance and Durability of Fe-N-C Fuel Cell Catalysts via Integrating Mo2C Clusters.

Carbon-supported nitrogen-coordinated iron single-atom (Fe-N-C) catalysts have been regarded among the most promising platinum-group-metal-free catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Nevertheless, their limited intrinsic activity and unsatisfactory stability have hindered their practical applications. Here, it is reported that the integration of Mo2C clusters effectively enhances the ORR activity and stability of Fe-N-C catalysts. The composite catalyst of Fe single atoms and Mo2C clusters co-embedded on nitrogen-doped carbon (FeSA/Mo2C-NC) exhibits an excellent ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.82V in acidic media and a high peak power density of 0.5W cm-2 in an H2-air PEMFC. Moreover, improved stability is achieved with nearly no decay under H2-air conditions for 80h at 0.4V. Experiments with theoretical calculations elucidate that the etching effect of the phosphomolybdic acid precursor optimizes the pore size distribution of the composite catalyst, thereby exposing more active sites. The Mo2C clusters modulate the electronic configuration of the Fe-N4 sites, optimizing adsorption energy for ORR intermediates and strengthening the Fe-N bond to mitigate demetalation. This work provides valuable insights into the construction of single-atom/nanoaggregate hybrid catalysts for efficient energy-related applications.

A review of ordered PtCo3 catalyst with higher oxygen reduction reaction activity in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

This review is devoted to the potential advantages of ordered alloy catalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), specifically focusing on the development of the low Pt content, high activity, and durability ordered PtCo3 catalyst. Due to the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and poor durability, the overall performance of the fuel cell is affected, and its application and promotion are limited. To address this issue, researchers have explored various synthetic strategies, such as element doping, morphology adjusting, structure controlling, ordering and support/metal interaction enhancement. This article extensively discussed the Pt related ORR catalysts and follows an in-depth analysis of ordered PtCo3. The introduction briefly discusses the direction of development of fuel cell catalysts and frontier progress, including theoretical mechanism, practical preparation, and Pt-containing electrode structures, etc. The subsequent chapter focuses on the Pt-Co catalyst, the evolution process of Pt alloy to Pt-Co alloy and the improvement scheme are introduced. The next chapter describes the properties of PtCo3. Although the ordered PtCo3 catalyst has a wide range of applicability due to low cost and high activity catalyst. However, besides the common agglomeration and sintering problems of Pt-Co alloy, its commercial application still faces unique problems of oversized crystal size, phase segregation, ordering transformation and transition metal dissolution. Therefore, in Chapter 4, this overview provides some possible improvement methods for three specific functions: crystal refinement, enhancing the effect of support and active substances, and anti-dissolution.

Electrodeposited Manganese Dioxides and Their Composites as Electrocatalysts for Energy Conversion Reactions.

Enhancing the efficiencies of electrochemical reactions for converting renewable energy into clean chemical fuels as well as generating clean energy is critical to achieving carbon neutrality. However, this enhancement can be achieved using materials that are not constrained by resource limitations and those that can be converted into devices in a scalable manner, preferably for industrial applications. This review explores the applications of electrochemically deposited manganese dioxides (MnO2) and their composites as electrochemical catalysts for oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution reactions for converting renewable energy into chemical fuels. It also explores their applications as electrochemical catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and bifunctional OER/ORR for the efficient operation of fuel cells and metal-air batteries, respectively. Manganese is the second most abundant transition metal in the Earth's crust, and electrodeposition represents a binder-free and scalable technique for fabricating devices (electrodes). To propose an improved catalyst design, the studies on the electrodeposition mechanism of MnO2as well as the fabrication techniques for MnO2-based nanocomposites accumulated in the development of electrodes for supercapacitors are also included in this review.

Polymerizable Ionic Liquid-Derived N, S co-Doped sp3/sp2 Carbon as Electrocatalyst for H2O2 Generation.

The H2O2 generation via the green electrochemical process is of high interest. For the H2O2 electrochemical generation, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is important. Unfortunately, the ORR is kinetically sluggish and catalysts are needed. However, noble metal ORR catalysts are pricy and scarcely applicable in applications. Therefore, non-precious metal catalysts are desired. Heteroatom-doped carbons show promise as metal-free ORR catalysts. The ORR catalytic activity will be enhanced by the carbon's sp2 and/or sp3 engineering. For N, S co-Cdoped and sp2/sp3 modulated carbon, a polymerizable ionic liquid of hydrolyzed vinyl imidazolium was studied. The carbon is studied as a metal-free catalyst for the ORR via the 2e- process. It is possible to get an onset potential of 0.88 V vs. RHE with approximately 50 % selectivity for the H2O2. The current study offers a simple technique for synthesizing heteroatom-doped sp2/sp3 designed carbon as catalysts for the electroreduction of O2 to produce H2O2, and a new way of tunning the sp3/sp2 carbon catalytic activity by modulating the ionic liquid.

Fluorine‐Lodged High‐Valent High‐Entropy Layered Double Hydroxide for Efficient, Long‐Lasting Zinc‐Air Batteries

AbstractEfficient and stable bifunctional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts are urgently needed to unlock the full potential of zinc‐air batteries (ZABs). High‐valence oxides (HVOs) and high entropy oxides (HEOs) are suitable candidates for their optimal electronic structures and stability but suffer from demanding synthesis. Here, a low‐cost fluorine‐lodged high‐valent high‐entropy layered double hydroxide (HV‐HE‐LDH) (FeCoNi2F4(OH)4) is conveniently prepared through multi‐ions co‐precipitation, where F− are firmly embedded into the individual hydroxide layers. Spectroscopic detections and theoretical simulations reveal high valent metal cations are obtained in FeCoNi2F4(OH)4, which enlarge the energy band overlap between metal 3d and O 2p, enhancing the electronic conductivity and charge transfer, thus affording high intrinsic OER catalytic activity. More importantly, the strengthened metal‐oxygen (M−O) bonds and stable octahedral geometry (M−O(F)6) in FeCoNi2F4(OH)4 prevent structural reorganization, rendering long‐term catalytic stability. Furthermore, an efficient three‐phase reaction interface with fast oxygen transportation was constructed, significantly improving the ORR activity. ZABs assembled with FeCoNi2F4(OH)4@HCC (hydrophobic carbon cloth) cathodes deliver a top performance with high round‐trip energy efficiency (61.3 % at 10 mA cm−2) and long‐term stability (efficiency remains at 58.8 % after 1050 charge–discharge cycles).

Boosted electron accumulation around Fe atom by asymmetry coordinated FeN3S1 for efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Catalysts with atomically dispersed Fe–N4 active sites have emerged as promising alternatives for noble-metal catalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the sluggish reaction kinetics limit their further utilization. Herein, asymmetry active sites FeN3S1 located on mesoporous carbon matrix (Fe–N3S1/Cmeso) are constructed and verified as efficient ORR catalysts with fast reaction kinetics. The synthesized Fe–N3S1/Cmeso catalysts exhibit a half-wave potential of 0.92 V in alkaline electrolyte, a higher power density (178 mW cm−2) and a long-term durability (350 h) in Zn-Air battery. Mechanism study demonstrates that the specific structure induces accumulated electronic density and decreased d band center of Fe atoms which optimize the adsorption energy with OH∗ intermediates thus boosting the intrinsic activity. Moreover, the uniform mesoporous structure significantly increases the accessibility of active sites. This work offers a new perspective to optimize the adsorption strength of reaction intermediates for enhanced ORR.

Single-Atom Doped Fullerene (MN4-C54) as Bifunctional Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction and Oxygen Evolution Reactions.

Development of high-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial to realizing the electrolytic water cycle. C60 is an ideal substrate material for single atom catalysts (SACs) due to its unique electron-withdrawing properties and spherical structure. In this work, we screened for a novel single-atom catalyst based on C60, which anchored transition metal atoms in the C60 molecule by coordination with N atoms. Through first-principles calculations, we evaluated the stability and activity of MN4-C54 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rh, Ru, Pd, Ag, Pt, Ir, Au). The results indicate that CuN4-C54, which is based only on earth-abundant elements, exhibited low overpotentials of 0.46 and 0.47 V for the OER and ORR, respectively, and was considered a promising bifunctional catalyst, showing better performance than the noble-metal ones. In addition, according to the linear relationship of intermediates, we established volcano plots to describe the activity trends of the OER and ORR on MN4-C54. Finally, d-band center and crystal orbital Hamiltonian populations methods were used to explain the catalytic origin. Suitable d-band centers lead to moderate adsorption strength, further leading to good catalytic performances.

Toward more practical site density determination in Fe-N-C catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction: NO-stripping at gas diffusion electrode setup

Evaluation of the site density of single-site iron catalysts has always been a challenge due to the complexity of those materials, and the difficulty of finding selective and simple probing methodologies. Since iron coordinating nitrogen (FeN4) is recognized as the main active site for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), it is fundamental to develop a method to assess the content in catalysts. Several bulk-probing and surface-probing methods have been developed in the last decade each one with its pros and cons. Among others, with certain limitations, NO stripping performed at a rotating disc electrode (RDE) has become a common characterization to evaluate site density and turnover frequency of Fe-N-C due to the relatively simple procedure. At the same time, gaining information on the activity on more practical devices has brought to the spreading of gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) in half-cell configuration to mimic the cathodic compartment of a fuel cell, a leading device for those materials applications. Here we proposed a transposition of NO-stripping from RDE to GDE to evaluate the site density under more practical devices. Several parameters have been considered (i.e., pH, loading, FeN4 selectiveness) and comparisons with RDE have been done to validate the methods. A homemade Fe-N-C catalyst has been used as a benchmark and compared to Pajarito Powder catalyst and others (including metal-free) showing the validity and selectivity of the method.

Silicon-air batteries enabled by in-situ FeMn alloy-catalyzed nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube arrays as efficient air electrodes catalysts

Silicon-air batteries (SABs) have become promising candidates for energy conversion and storage devices due to their high theoretical energy density, cost-effectiveness, and inherent safety. However, the slow kinetics of the 4e− transfer in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode during discharge, coupled with severe polarization, reduces the battery’s capacity and hinders the development of silicon-air batteries. The cathodes of currently developed SABs primarily rely on commercial Pt/C and MnO2, with limited research on low-cost, efficient, and stable air cathodes for SABs. To address this issue, we synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes containing FeMn alloy particles (FeMn@NCNTs) as cathode ORR catalysts using a simple high-temperature pyrolysis method combined with chemical vapor deposition. In an alkaline medium, the catalyst’s half-wave potential (E1/2) reached 0.83 V. Moreover, the FeMn@NCNTs air cathode exhibited excellent compatibility with the silicon anode, and the constructed aqueous silicon-air battery demonstrated a high specific capacity (165 Ah kg−1) and power density (3.69 mW cm−2). Additionally, the quasi-solid-state SABs constructed with FeMn@NCNTs showed stable operation over a wide temperature range, providing a new solution for the development of low-cost, efficient silicon-air batteries suitable for a wide range of applications.

Molten Salt-Assisted Synthesis of Ferric Oxide/M-N-C Nanosheet Electrocatalysts for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Efficient, stable, and low-cost oxygen reduction catalysts are the key to the large-scale application of metal-air batteries. Herein, high-dispersive Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) with abundant oxygen vacancies uniformly are anchored on lignin-derived metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) hierarchical porous nanosheets as efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts (Fe2O3/M-N-C, M═Cu, Mn, W, Mo) based on a general and economical KCl molten salt-assisted method. The combination of Fe with the highly electronegative O induces charge redistribution through the Fe-O-M structure, thereby reducing the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing substances. The coupling effect of Fe2O3 NPs with M-N-C expedites the catalytic activity toward ORR by promoting proton generation on Fe2O3 and transfer to M-N-C. Experimental and theoretical calculation further revealed the remarkable electronic structure evolution of the metal site during the ORR process, where the emission density and local magnetic moment of the metal atoms change continuously throughout their reaction. The unique layered porous structure and highly active M-N4 sites resulted in the excellent ORR activity of Fe2O3/Cu-N-C with the onset potential of 0.977V, which is superior to Pt/C. This study offers a feasible strategy for the preparation of non-noble metal catalysts and provides a new comprehension of the catalytic mechanism of M-N-C catalysts.

Chitosan pyrolysis in the presence of a ZnCl2/NaCl salts for carbons with electrocatalytic activity in oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline solutions.

The one-step carbonization of low cost and abundant chitosan biopolymer in the presence of salt eutectics ZnCl2/NaCl results in nitrogen-doped carbon nanostructures(8.5 wt.% total nitrogen content). NaCl yields the spacious 3D structure, which allows external oxygen to easily reach the active sites for the oxygen reductionreaction (ORR) distinguished by their high onset potential and the maximum turnover frequency of 0.132 e site⁻1s⁻1. Data show that the presence of NaCl during the synthesis exhibits the formation of pores having large specific volumes and surface(specific surface area of 1217 m2g-1), and holds advantage by their pores characteristics such as their micro-size part, which provides a platform for mass transport distribution in three-dimensional N-doped catalysts for ORR. It holds benefit over sample pre-treated with LiCl in terms of the micropores specific volume and area, seen as their percentage rate, measured in the BET. Therefore, the average concentration of the active site on the surface is larger.

Reaction-driven restructuring of defective PtSe2 into ultrastable catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction.

PtM (M = S, Se, Te) dichalcogenides are promising two-dimensional materials for electronics, optoelectronics and gas sensors due to their high air stability, tunable bandgap and high carrier mobility. However, their potential as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is often underestimated due to their semiconducting properties and limited surface area from van der Waals stacking. Here we show an approach for synthesizing a highly efficient and stable ORR catalyst by restructuring defective platinum diselenide (DEF-PtSe2) through electrochemical cycling in an O2-saturated electrolyte. After 42,000 cycles, DEF-PtSe2 exhibited 1.3 times higher specific activity and 2.6 times higher mass activity compared with a commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst. Even after 126,000 cycles, it maintained superior ORR performance with minimal decay. Quantum mechanical calculations using hybrid density functional theory reveal that the improved performance is due to the synergistic contributions from Pt nanoparticles and the apical active sites on the DEF-PtSe2 surface. This work highlights the potential of DEF-PtSe2 as a durable electrocatalyst for ORR, offering insights into PtM dichalcogenide electrochemistry and the design of advanced catalysts.

High-Entropy Ag-Ru-based Electrocatalysts with Dual-Active-Center for Highly Stable Ultra-Low-Temperature Zinc-Air Batteries.

The development of advanced bifunctional catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is significant for rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, a unique dual active center alloying strategy is proposed to achieve the efficient bifunctional oxygen catalysis, and the high entropy effect is further exploited to modulate the structure and performance of the catalysts. The MOF-assisted pyrolysis-replacement-alloying method was employed to construct the CoCuFeAgRu high-entropy alloy (HEA), which are uniformly anchored in porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets. Notably, the obtained HEA catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance for both ORR and OER, and a peak power density of 136. 53 mW cm-2 and an energy density of 987.9 mAh gZn-1, surpassing the most of the previously reported bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. Moreover, the assembled flexible rechargeable ZAB enables excellent performance even at the ultralow temperature of -40°C, with an energy density of 601.6 mAh gZn-1 and remarkable cycling stability up to 1,650 hours. Combined experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that the excellent bifunctional catalytic activity of the HEA catalyst originated from the synergistic effect of the Ag and Ru dual active centers, and the optimization of the electronic structure by alloying effect.

The MOF‐assisted pyrolysis‐replacement‐alloying method was employed to construct the CoCuFeAgRu high‐entropy alloy (HEA), which are uniformly anchored in porous nitrogen‐doped carbon nanosheets. Notably, the obtained HEA catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance for both ORR and OER, and a peak power density of 136. 53 mW cm‐2 and an energy density of 987.9 mAh gZn‐1, surpassing the most of the previously reported bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. Moreover, the assembled flexible rechargeable ZAB enables excellent performance even at the ultralow temperature of ‐40°C, with an energy density of 601.6 mAh gZn‐1 and remarkable cycling stability up to 1,650 hours. Combined experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that the excellent bifunctional catalytic activity of the HEA catalyst originated from the synergistic effect of the Ag and Ru dual active centers, and the optimization of the electronic structure by alloying effect.
