Another Pre-1592 Copy of the English Faust Book

Abstract A second copy of a pre-1592 edition of the English Faust Book, Marlowe’s source for Doctor Faustus, has been uncovered in a catalogue of books owned by a London apothecary. This catalogue, of which at least a quarter are books associated with an apothecary’s profession, was compiled by the owner himself, one Edward Barlow, and, most importantly, is firmly dated 17 November 1589/90. This discovery, made by Peter Murray Jones of King’s College, Cambridge, is the second appearance of that book prior to the publication of its only extant edition in 1592, providing confirmation that Marlowe could have written Faustus prior to 1592. But whenever Marlowe wrote his play, the medico-magical material he employed had its source in a work that a practising apothecary judged valuable enough to add to his other professional books. The development of education, which in the 18th century was available not only to boys, but also girls from wealthy bourgeois families, as well as the development of publishing houses and specialised bookstores with books for children (the first of them was founded by John Newbery) caused the phenomenon of children and teenagers’ ‘eager reading’. The introduction of free access for children to library collections at the American public library in Pawtucket, Rhode Island (1877), turned out to be the ‘Copernican revolution’. The idea was introduced to many American and European libraries. From that time on, children and teenage readers had a real influence not only on the selection of their own readings, but also on the profile, subjects and nature of newly-created books. At the same time, the opposite phenomenon intensified: adult writers and educators tried to control the readings of younger generation. The catalogues of books for children and adolescents created during nearly half a century (1884–1929), evaluated the didactic values of readings, but ignored their literary qualities.

Urbanization and its central object, the city, claim a priority in analyses of the modern condition, whether optimistic or pessimistic. The city also appears as a central protagonist in any number of works of architectural history, having captivated the attention of architects and architectural discourse for the past two centuries. In Designing the Modern City: Urbanism since 1850 , Eric Mumford aims to acknowledge both of these views—the city as the conceit of architects and the city as the embodiment of modernity—with a broad survey of the strategies conceived, proposed, and deployed to design the modern city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although compact, Mumford's book accomplishes ample coverage of salient examples distributed temporally and geographically, such that it functions as a survey textbook, one that may occupy the pedagogical positions formerly held by classic publications on city form. The influential morphological approach of publications by Leonardo Benevolo, Edmund Bacon, and Spiro Kostof has of course waned in recent decades with the ascendance of more emphatically sociocultural and technopolitical examinations of urbanization, leaving open the question of whether and how we should talk about the intentional design of cities. This is the challenge that Mumford takes up, proposing to offer “an account of how key figures in design responded to changing social, technical, and economic circumstances with design proposals and built projects” (2). The image catalogs of the libraries of RAS Pushchino Science Center and RAS Library for Natural Sciences: Generation and use

The experience of building and use of the image catalogs at the Library of Pushchino Science Center of theRussianAcademyof Sciences and RAS Library for Natural Sciences is examined. The differences between the catalogs are identified: the former comprises the scanned systematic catalog, and the latter – the alphabet catalog of foreign books. Two different approaches toward retroconversion are analyzed. In Pushchino, the Library preferred hand input into the ecatalog to retroconversion on the basis of the completed systematic image catalog. The systematic image catalog is heavily used in the library services and available via the Library’s www-site. Instead, the RAS Library for Natural Sciences after having scanned and edited the alphabet catalog of foreign books, implemented the function of book search and ordering from the image catalog. The prospects and tasks for acquiring retro-entries to the e-catalogs are discussed. The Library of RAS Pushchino Science Center is to complete the retroconvesion of the alphabet card catalog and editing of the systematic image catalog. The RAS Library for Natural Sciences is to generate the image catalog of national book publications.

Survey about the Catalog of Books from the Northern Cathedral (Beitang) Library Stored in the Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia

The article is devoted to one of the most difficult and still completely unsolved problems, connected with the reconstruction of the historical circumstances, followed to the Peking Jesuits library transition to the place of Russian Ecclesiastical Mission (in the first half of the 19th century), as well as its return by Russian missionaries and diplomat N. P. Ignatiev to the former owners (in 1860). Based on Russian archival data, on materials from Russian, Chinese and Western experts available on this subject, the author tries to establish the circumstances surrounding the events and to determine the time when they could occur. All known from the scientific literature versions of dating for the books transition to the Orthodox missionaries are brought together and critically evaluated. It is suggested what are the most possible time for these events to be happen. Participants of the events are also identified. Special attention is paid to the studying of the catalog of Jesuit books found by the author in the Foreign Policy Archive of the Russian Empire. For the first time in the Russian-language literature, the contents of this catalog are presented and substantively analyzed. By the way the author traces the fate of some books which were mentioned in the catalog but were not returned to the Jesuits as they were transferred to other Russian institutions. This article may be of some interest to those who study the history of the Catholic and Russian Orthodox missions in Beijing, as well as the problems of the relationship between them. The paper denotes issues that are still to be solved.

“Russian author” in 1739: Gottlieb Bayer, Ivan Taubert and the First Steps of Russian School Literary Canon

In the 1730s, the administration of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences redesigned the program of study at the Academy’s gymnasium. Their goal was to create an institution capable of preparing specialists not only for the Academy itself, but also for the civil service, which required people educated in both Russian and German. The regulation ( reglament ) developed by Georg Krafft in 1739, besides preserving the previous division of the gymnasium into Latin and German departments, redesigned the instruction offered by the German department to form a full curriculum, in which Russian-style instruction was as important as mastering the German language. This visionary project put together classes in which pupils whose native language was Russian would study in the same classroom as students whose native language was German, which led the Academy to develop a corpus of bilingual (German/Russian) textbooks. A key element of the syllabus was the study of “a Russian author” (analogous to the well-developed system of “reading authors” in European Latin schools), the first time this method had been introduced in a Russian school. Gottlieb Siegfried Bayer’s “Azov History” ( Begebenheiten von Azow , 1736–37), translated into Russian by Ivan Taubert (1737), was chosen as the set text. The whole syllabus provided by Krafft’s 1739 gymnasium regulation, as well as the book-selling practice of the Academy in the early 1740s, makes it clear that the selection of Bayer's book was not coincidental — it corresponded well to the Russian reading public's ideas about proper verbal composition. The marginal status of verse (poetry) in this structure, combined with the actors’ attention to questions of style, provide the basis for a new narrative for Russian literary history of the 1730s, centered around the collective work of the translators of the under-studied Russian Society ( Rossijskoe sobranie ), established in 1735. In the 1930s, the scientific and bibliographical activity was localized in the western Ukrainian lands and in the emigration centers. As far as a thorough and comprehensive study of the bibliographic product, as a separate segment of the Ukrainian book publishing process during this period, has not been carried out, the disclosure of the methodological approaches and methods for making bibliographic indexes, in view of their thematic and genre characteristics, is relevant and important. The research being done, has shown that the bibliographic segment of the repertoire of the western Ukrainian and the whole Ukrainian emigration books of the 1930s was formed by the auxiliary advisory, book publishing guides of different genres. The most significant were the auxiliary indexes, which were divided into universal, sectoral, thematic, and personal ones. The members of the Bibliographic (since 1934 – the Bibliologic) Comission of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (NTSh) in Lviv Volodymyr Doroshenko, Yevhen Yulij Penenskyj, Petro Zlenko, Ivan Shendryk played a decisive role in their preparation. These editions are perfect in their level of the methodology, as far as their compilers were real experts. The reference bibliographic indexes and lists, represented primarily by the editions of «Prosvita», corresponded the cultural and educational objectives of this Institution. The book catalogs advertised the production of numerous publishers and bookstores, among which the bookstore of NTSh was the most active. The content indexes of periodicals, especially «Novi Shlachy» by Ivan Krushelnytskyj and «Nova Zoria» by Olexandr Moch, should be mentioned. The results of the research can be used for studies in the history of the bibliography of the interwar period, the study of the scientific inheritance of bibliographers and scientific societies, publishers and bookstores.

Digital Services of the National Library of Korea: Current State and Tasks

The National Library (NL) of Korea holds about 16.3 million digital information materials. Since 2016, the NL has been receiving legal deposit copies of e-books, digital copies of publications, magazines and newspapers. The article analyses digital services of the NL of Korea and identifies the main problems in this area.The NL of Korea is the main library of the country, actively developing the inter-library relations, cooperating with libraries of the Republic of Korea and around the world. It developed the Reference service “Ask a Librarian”, created the Catalogue of digital books, the System “Free Access to Korea” and offers the services on providing information in alternative forms for people with disabilities. The NL designed the automated library system and implemented it in 1094 library. The NL of Korea started the work on creation of the China-Japan-Korea Digital Library Portal. There is a number of problems: acquisition of electronic legal deposit copies, lack of the content for some projects, lack of information services, optimized for the users requirements. The purpose of this study: professional dialogue in the world library community for the exchange of experience, knowledge information resources and for sharing of library content. The article presents the Three-year digital service plan. The author describes the goals and objectives of the NL of Korea: the expansion of the library holdings in the digital environment, the improvement of operation of digital resources, the activation of mobile services and popularization of humanities knowledge through digitization.The principle of operation of all Korean libraries is changing from data collecting and information storage to implementation of information. The author concludes that libraries should quickly respond to the information technology changes. Nowadays, there increases the importance of collecting and storing of all information resources of the national value.

Activities on Information Support of Siberian Science of the Department of Scientific Bibliography of SPSTL SB RAS

The article presents the activity of the Department of Scientific Bibliography (DSB) of the State Public Scientific-Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPSTL SB RAS) for 60 years in information support of scientific research in Siberia and the Far East and creation of the system of regional bibliographic informing of the research institutions of SB RAS in relevant scientific areas. The authors describe the activity of the Department for study of bibliographic provision of science in the region and preparation of analytical reviews of natural science and Humanities. In the time perspective, the paper presents the activities of DSB on automation of bibliographic processes, the formation of databases (bibliographic, full-text), current and retrospective indices, creation of the scientific base of Siberian bibliography and informing of subscribers in the mode of selective dissemination of information (SDI) and differentiated services for executives (DSE).The authors highlight the Department activity for the preparation of Union catalogues of books and periodicals of Siberia and the Far East, in particular, the Union catalogue of Siberian and Far Eastern books, which is included in the list of core projects of the “Program of National Bibliography Development in the Russian Federation for the period up to 2020”. The article presents the main indicators of the research activities of the Department (publications in journals and collections of studies, presentations at international, national and regional conferences), successful cooperation with science supporting foundations, participation in integration projects; methodical assistance in holding seminars and consultations on bibliographic description, methods of bibliometry, altmetry. The authors outline the prospects of further activities of DSB within the library and information activities of SPSTL SB RAS: development of new electronic tools to solve the problems of scientometrics, the study and application of the developments and achievements in the field of information and communication technologies, etc.

In situ Manuscript Fragments in the Incunables of the Bodleian Library, Oxford: A Fragmentarium Case Study

This paper discusses the objectives, methodology, and outcomes of the Fragmentarium case study to catalogue in situ manuscript fragments in the incunables of the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Drawing on summary information provided within the 2005 incunable catalogue, A Catalogue of Books Printed in the Fifteenth Century now in the Bodleian Library, the descriptions produced consider these fragments within their functional contexts. Here, the author argues that considering in situ fragments as constituent parts of their host volumes offers meaningful contribution to the material study of the book.

RDA and Rare Books Cataloging, Part 1

Catalogers using Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials: Books (DCRM(B)) were challenged when the Library of Congress (LC) adopted Resource Description and Access (RDA). DCRM(B) is based on AACR2, which is organized according to International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) areas. RDA is based on FRBR. As of this writing, the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee intends to finish an initial version of RBMS Policy Statements for the RDA Toolkit. During the interim, the Bibliographic Standards Committee website states: “The Bibliographic Standards Committee is neutral regarding RDA, neither encouraging nor discouraging agencies regarding implementation of RDA-acceptable DCRM records.” The Committee provides rare book catalogers with two options. The first instructs catalogers to form descriptive portions of records according to DCRM(B) and AACR2, using RDA for access points. The second option directs catalogers to create RDA records using the PCC-RDA BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) that includes rare materials provisions. This paper discusses the creation process of three catalog records for the same rare book developed according to DCRM(B), the PCC-RDA-BSR with rare materials provisions and RDA with exceptions for early printed resources.

Serial Publications in the Library Holdings: the “Eternal” Question of Identification

The article examines the issues related to such an intricate element of the document flow as serial publications, in particular, the continuing ones. This problem is worth considering because the flow of serial publications, being an important source of scientific information, has a permanent tendency to a progressive growth in numbers. Moreover, due to the development of new technologies, serials are actively turning from traditional printed form to the new ones, for example, CD-ROM or on-line access. All this brings some challenges for librarians. The correctness of identification of publications in the process of stocks generation affects the important technological activities, relating to their selection, description, organization, tracking completeness of their receipt and refection in catalogues, as well as their further use. To maintain the proper quality of serials stock generation, the State Public Scientific-Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of theRussianAcademyof Sciences works out and regularly renovates technological documentation regulating the processes of work with these publications. The ideological and technological solutions include the elaboration of a standpoint that allows determining the type of publications, the permanent adjustment of the criteria for serials evaluation and selection, the ability to change on the stage of current acquisitions the area of publications entering the total library stock. This made it possible to regulate significantly the stock structure. The task of optimizing the reader’s search is solved by means of transferring (since 1991) of serial publications’ bibliographic records, according to the formal identifier (pressmark), from the Electronic Catalogue of Books to the Electronic Catalogue of Journals, now titled “The Electronic Catalogue of Periodical and Continuing Publications”. The electronic reference and search system of the State Public Scientific-Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of theRussianAcademyof Sciences can be further improved for serials by filling with data on the retro-part of the collection of continuing publications. The nearest circle of tasks for the library specialists is supposed to include the working out of a strategy on unifying the accounting of serials.

Project Digitization, Bibliographic Description and Research of Texts Written in Glagolitic, Croatian Cyrillic and Latin Scripts Until the End of the 19th Century in the Zadar and Šibenik Area (Written Heritage)

Croatian written heritage has a rich corpus of manuscripts written on three scripts – Glagolitic, Latin and Croatian Cyrillic, and in three languages – Church Slavonic, Croatian redaction of the Church Slavonic and Latin. Those manuscripts are often hard to access, or even completely hidden. The aim of the project Written Heritage is to provide digital surrogates of Glagolitic manuscripts, online Glagolitic manuscript catalog, bibliography, and a watermark database. Within the project, the main focus is on providing solutions regarding the machine-readable cataloging of Glagolitc manuscripts, including research and normative work in the field of cataloging of old and rare books.

When in the mid-1960s the movement of the New Left emerged in Continental- Europe, a group of antiquarians, booksellers and -distributers as well as archivists, established an informal transnational network. This network turned out to be crucial in providing the material groundworks for the production of a certain type of knowledge – a formation of knowledge of the political left that would enable scientists or political activists to compare the current present with the interwar-past of the 1920s and 1930s. This paper follows one of these agents of knowledge: Theo Pinkus (1909–1991), a socialist Swiss antiquarian, literary agent, publisher and founder of a public library of the working-class movement in Zürich. His company’s „Büchersuchdienst“ vast catalogues of antiquarian books quickly established themselves as vital tools in restocking war-damaged libraries all over Europe in the 1950s and 1960s and building a potent network of specialized antifascist and working-class archives.

Die Bücher des Humanisten Christophe de Longueil. Das Römische Inventar von 1519

This paper offers an edition, with introduction and analysis, of the hitherto unknown catalogue of books belonging to the Flemish humanist Christophe de Longueil (1485‑1522), which was drafted in 1519 in Rome. Though de Longueil’s biography is well known, a closer study of his library sheds new light on his intellectual background and humanist interests, not least because the inventory also lists some of de Longueil’s own works that were previously unknown. Furthermore, the paper places the catalogue within its historical context, discussing de Longueil’s ties with the notary Jacobus Apocellus and the banker Lorenzo di Bartolomeo Bartolini, and tracing the further history of the notarial act and the library. The analysis contributes to a better understanding of de Longueil’s journey to and his departure from Rome in the wake of the famous trial against him for having allegedly commited a crimen laesae maiestatis against the Eternal City.
