Delivering sustainable development via social innovation: Cases of social entrepreneurship in South Korea and Singapore

AbstractSocial innovation is a useful mechanism to address unmet needs in local societies and tackle wicked problems through innovative products and services. Policymakers and practitioners have increasingly become interested in effective policies and strategies for facilitating social innovation to deliver sustainable development; however, a lack of coherent analytical framework persists. To address this gap, we propose the Social Innovation System framework, by adapting the Technological Innovation Systems approach widely used in innovation management and policy. Providing a holistic and comprehensive perspective to explore complex interactions among different actors and institutions involved in social innovation, our framework allows more systematic understanding of the development of social entrepreneurship and relevant ecosystems. We employ this framework to analyze social innovation ecosystems in South Korea and Singapore. The results indicate systemic challenges to overcome owing to the collective and interactive nature of social innovation.

Go Green Textiles: A Case of Social Entrepreneurship in India

This case outlines the journey of this new-age young social entrepreneur, Akhilesh Taparia, whose mantra has been social welfare coupled with organisational success. The case traces how he fought against all odds to take his enterprise to greater heights and deliberates around these questions: What did he do to achieve success in such a short period of time? What was his thought process? How did he grow? What were the main elements of his strategy to have a sustainable enterprise? What were his main hurdles? The case attempts to identify the challenges of social entrepreneurs in emerging economies like India, especially when the required resources are not easily available. Being an entrepreneur and resolving problems can be tough but being in the social space can be even more hard. Nonetheless at a time when the textile industry was caught amongst stiff competition, Go Green created a niche for itself as a textile supplier of organic fabrics. A personal interview of Akhilesh Taparia and a personal visit to his factory gave the authors a complete understanding of the manufacturing and packing process. The primary objective of this case is to understand concepts related to social entrepreneurship and deliberate upon Taparia’s entrepreneurial characteristics, motivations, expertise and effectiveness, and how these supported his company’s growth.

Toward a Collective Approach to Social Innovation: The Case of Social Entrepreneurship in Tunisia

This article aims to understand the extent to which social entrepreneurship contributes to the construction of a collective dimension linked to social innovation. Since 2013, this work has been based on a participant observation of eight major events dedicated to social entrepreneurship or the Shared Economy. In-depth interviews with Tunisian social entrepreneurs were also conducted in order to enrich our corpus. The results show the necessary cooperation of social entrepreneurs for a sustainable and responsible social innovation. Indeed, the analysis emphasizes that the viability and sustainability of a social innovation is based essentially on a collective construction, beyond common social values.JEL CODES: O30, O35

South Africa’s Community Work Programme as Social Entrepreneurship: A Sociological Perspective

ABSTRACTThe study of social entrepreneurship is gaining momentum in academia, in research institutions as well as in practice; however, there is a lack of sociological analysis of social entrepreneurship. This article argues that social entrepreneurship needs to be understood from a social sciences perspective. As the research has pointed out, sociological literature does not have much to say about social entrepreneurship even though social entrepreneurship is an important process through which significant social change occurs in contemporary societies. Using a South African case study, the article analyses social entrepreneurship from a sociological perspective, citing the process of establishing the community work programme (CWP) in South Africa as an illustrative case of social entrepreneurship. Such an analysis departs from a business school-type of perspective which focuses on business models, earned income and financial sustainability.

Reframing Social Entrepreneurship Impact: Productive, Unproductive and Destructive Outputs and Outcomes of the Milwaukee School Voucher Programme

This paper initially seeks to problematize the common assumption that all social entrepreneurship impact is positive. No matter what social entrepreneurs and other powerful intermediaries subjectively believe or hope, assuming that social entrepreneurship is always productive a priori imposes significant limits on this budding field. In order to overcome this bias it is necessary to reframe how we approach and assess social entrepreneurship impact. Drawing from the economic entrepreneurship literature, this paper outlines a multi-dimensional framework to serve as a useful and preferable starting point for assessing social entrepreneurship. We then make use of this multi-dimensional lens to look closer at the impact of one case of social entrepreneurship, the school voucher programme in Milwaukee.

Creating successful business model: lessons for social entrepreneurship

This paper draws on a particular case of social entrepreneurship, by which we have made an effort to outline context, dimensions and challenges for social entrepreneurship. While social entrepreneurship is not a new phenomenon, in the last 15 years, it is growing extensively with a new breed of entrepreneur developing solutions to social problems. This paper brings insight of creating a successful business model in social entrepreneurship with the help of the case. The case is about a European international company, Vestergaard Frandsen, which specialises in disease control along with complex emergency response products. This company is directed by a unique humanitarian entrepreneurship business model in which humanitarian responsibility is in its core business and their business model is based on ‘profit for purpose’. This organisation is involved in innovating products and concepts which are more useful for the developing world. This separates them from other companies who innovate for developed countries which are wealthier regions of the world and then adapt it for other developing countries. This paper focuses on how social entrepreneurship can extend boundaries and function in different countries. This paper concludes by identifying the needs for generating financially sustainable innovation and a continuously evolving business model for social entrepreneurship.

"“Everyone a Changemaker”: Social Entrepreneurship, Hegemony and the Fantasy of Social Change"

In the wake of the economic crisis a space has opened up for imagining alternatives to capitalism ‘as we know it’, or so it seems. In this article we use the case of social entrepreneurship as the par excellance utopia in the “post-ideological” era to chart how seemingly radical articulations of the social might eventually solidify rather than transgress the status quo. Drawing on a mixed methods analysis of Austrian social entrepreneurship support institutions based on an affect-oriented approach to hegemony, we illuminate the articulatory mechanisms which align social entrepreneurship with an ethos of enjoyment that entertains the (illusionary) view that progress and wealth are possible if (and only if) social issues are subjected to pragmatic business solutions. Particularly, we emphasize that semantic vagueness and the fantasmatic effacing of the social’s inherent contingency form essential preconditions for the establishment of hegemonic meaning. The article concludes that rather than appealing to more ‘realistic’, i.e., post-fantasmatic accounts of social entrepreneurship, the task consists in revealing the political and fantasy narratives which engender the illusion of fullness.

Strategic niche management of social innovations: the case of social entrepreneurship

Strategic niche management (SNM), a tool to understand and manage radical socio-technical innovations and facilitate their diffusion, has always departed from a technical artefact. Many radical innovations, however, do not revolve around such an artefact. Social entrepreneurship is a new business model that combines a social goal with a business mentality and is heralded as an important new way to create social value such as sustainability. This study examines if and how SNM can be applied to such a social innovation. It identifies theoretical and practical limitations and proposes solutions. The main conclusion is that SNM can be used to analyse radical social innovation, although it requires rethinking the initial entry point for research and management. Exemplifying quotes are proposed as an alternative. Second, this paper suggests using values to describe niche–regime interaction as a better way to anticipate future niche–regime interactions.

A Case Of Social Entrepreneurship: Tackling Homelessness

Social entrepreneurship integrates the resourcefulness of traditional entrepreneurship with the compelling drive to mitigate social ills. The focus of this study is on one social entrepreneurial organization that has changed the lives of the poor and homeless in a large urban area. The case study describes the dilemma the organization faces in deciding whether to enter into a joint venture with another non-profit social service entity. The joint venture would increase the number of at-risk people it could serve but threatens to change the unique nature of its operation and could compromise the organization’s brand.

Factors that inhibit partnering for social start‐up enterprises

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the inhibiting factors of partnership creation between social entrepreneurs in the business, government, public and non‐profit sector.Design/methodology/approachThis paper examines four cases of social entrepreneurship in the start‐up phase. Each case is studied in real time, for a period of two years.FindingsThe empirical research reveals that partnership creation for social enterprises between a social enterprise and organizations in various sectors is inhibited by conflicting interests and diverging speed of on one hand and by the conflicts that originate from the opportunity‐seeking behavior of the social entrepreneur and the risk avoiding behavior of the organizations. While the social start‐ups that managed to neutralize such inhibitors succeeded, the start‐up enterprises that did not manage to do so failed.Originality/valueWhile, there is a sound body of knowledge of the factors that inhibit the more traditional single and cross‐sector partnerships, relatively little is known about the factors that inhibit the partnerships between social enterprises and organizations in the business, public, government, and non‐profit sectors in society.

Scoping Social Entrepreneurship in India: Organisation, Technology, and Collaboration

We explore emerging contexts of social entrepreneurship in India. Social entrepreneurship is emerging as an important option in poverty reduction and social change wherein organizing societal responses to scenarios like entrenched deprivation, cumulative disadvantages, long extant institutional lock-in, and vulnerabilities enmeshed in social stratification, hiatus emanating from segmentation of labour market and inadequate coverage of social protection form the core of strategies/collectives/organisation. In this paper, first, drawing cues from the literature, we outline basic typology of social entrepreneurship while delineating pivotal role technology and collaboration play in social entrepreneurship. Second, we provide a glimpse of not profit organisations in India, based on the secondary data. We juxtapose select patterns from the data on non profit organisations with human development. Third, we discuss select cases of social entrepreneurship that diverge in characteristics and contexts, in particular how these initiatives work towards poverty reduction and social development.
