Superficial Dermatomycosis in Primary Care in the Ecuadorian Andean Region: Clinical Presentation and Therapeutic Approaches

Dermatomycosis encompasses a spectrum of fungal infections caused by filamentous fungi, predominantly dermatophytes, affecting humans and animals. This article presents various cases of dermatomycosis along with their respective treatments.

Deep fungal dermatitis caused by the Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii in captive coastal bearded dragons (Pogona barbata)

Deep fungal dermatitis caused by the Chrysosporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii (CANV) was diagnosed in a group of coastal bearded dragons (Pogona barbata). The outbreak extended over a 6-month period, with four of six lizards from the same zoological outdoor enclosure succumbing to infection. A fifth case of dermatomycosis was identified in a pet lizard originally sourced from the wild. Diagnosis of infection with the CANV was based on similar clinical signs and histopathology in all animals and confirmed by culture and sequencing of the fungus from one animal. This is the first report of the CANV causing disease in a terrestrial reptile species in Australia and the first in the coastal bearded dragon.

Cutaneous Paecilomycosis Caused by Paecilomyces variotii in an African Pygmy Hedgehog ( Atelerix albiventris)

This article describes the first case of dermatomycosis caused by Paecilomyces variotii in an African pygmy hedgehog ( Atelerix albiventris). The internal transcribed spacer region along with the β-tubulin and calmodulin genes were partially sequenced and compared with sequences in the GenBank database to confirm the identification of the pathogen. Treatment with oral itraconazole was effective.

Chrysosporium guarroisp. nov. a new emerging pathogen of pet green iguanas (Iguana iguana)

Chrysosporium guarroi sp. nov. represented by five strains isolated from cases of dermatomycosis in pet green iguanas (Iguana iguana) in Spain, is described and illustrated. This taxon is characterized by its ability to grow at temperatures from 15 to 37 degrees C and by the presence of arthroconidia and aleurioconidia. The latter are unicellular, smooth, pyriform or clavate, sessile or borne at the ends of narrow stalks. The analysis of the sequences of the D1/D2 and ITS regions confirm the separation of this new species from others of the genus Chrysosporium.

Zur Frage der Bildung von Immunglobulinen A, G, M und E bei Dermatomykosen

According to current concepts in the first place T-lymphocytes have an important part in the defense mechanism against dermatomycosis. This theory is strengthened by investigations in which we were not able to demonstrate an increase of the immunoglobulins A, G and M in 36 patients suffering from this disease. To gather further information we determined the values of the immunoglobulin E in 16 cases of dermatomycosis. Taking into account a larger variation of the normal value in healthy persons, we found in at least 3 cases an increased amount of IgE. As we observe now and then an immediate reaction of Type I (according to COOMBS and GELL) after intracutaneous injection of trichophytin, it appears that IgE plays a role in certain fungal infections of the skin.

Epidemiology of Tinea Pedis and Toenail Tinea Unguium in Worshippers in the Mosques in Adana, Turkey

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dermatomycosis and the risk factors in those who perform their prayers in the mosques in the city center of Adana Province. The diagnosis of dermatomycosis was made on the basis of direct microscopy and/or culture in addition to clinical findings. Among 461 subjects, 136 (29.5%) had tinea pedis, 23 (5.0%) had tinea unguium, and 21 (4.5%) had both infections simultaneously, with a resulting total of 180 (39.0%) cases of dermatomycosis. The causative agents by frequency were: Trichophyton rubrum (67.0%), T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (31.1%), and Candida albicans (1.9%). The prevalence of the foot dermatomycosis was found to be high among those who practiced ablution 3-5 times a day and did not dry their feet immediately, who used rubber shoes, and/or who shared their shoes. Pedal dermatophyte infection seems to be a major problem among the adult Muslim male population regularly attending mosques especially in 5th and 6th decades of life.

Review of the literature and investigations on the prevalence and consequences of yeasts in reptiles.

Ninety-one reptiles were examined for the presence of yeasts by standard protocols and pathohistological methods. Yeasts were isolated from 42 of the animals. Representatives of herbivorous families (Testudinidae and Iguanidae) carried yeasts more often than animals belonging to carnivorous taxa (Boidae and Emydidae). Yeasts were most often isolated from the gastrointestinal tract, and in 24-6 per cent of cases they could be cultured from the oral cavity and/or cloaca of living animals. Postmortem examination revealed that the intestines of 80-6 per cent of the animals carried yeasts. In all, 56 isolates, belonging to the genera Candida (32), Trichosporon (11), Torulopsis (9) and Rhodotorula (3), and one perfect yeast were obtained. The species included taxa potentially pathogenic to man. However, no sufficiently reliable criteria could be established to prove that positive culture results were associated with disease. In the reptiles examined postmortem, three cases of dermatomycosis were detected histologically. No case of organ mycosis was identified.

Isolation ofEpidermophyton floccosumfrom a dog in Norway

This report presents a case of dermatomycosis caused by Epidermophyton floccosum in a dog--the first recorded isolation of this fungus from animals in Norway.

Infections due to Trichophyton tonsurans and Trichophyton sulfureum in rural eastern Quebec.

Seventy cases of dermatomycosis due toTrichophyton tonsurans (21 cases) andT. sulfureum (49 cases) were found in rural Quebec east of Rimouski during field investigations from 1956–1961. There are no immigrants in this area and endothrix ringworm has been present for at least three consecutive generations.
